I went to Abraham Lincoln High School from 1968 to 1974. Then, it was Junior 7.8,9th grade, and High School 10'11 and 12th grade combined. There was no Middle School like now. Either 1968 or 1969 , El Chicano played in the school's Auditorium. It was a treat ,and a lifetime awsome experience. Rudy regalado a timbalero and percusionist from Venezuela ,joined the group a little later, whom had his own group of salsa at a later time. He played in different places around L.A. I saw him at a little club called Mardi Gras on Wishire Boulevard in the mid and late 1980's, as well as at an Exclusive Latin Club called "El Cache by Silverlake area". He had added and contributed his great touch and tropical beat, to "El Chicano group". (We sadly lost him) I went to the same highschool with Steve Salas ,the founder and singer of Tierra, during the early 70's. I remember about his Brother Rudy Salas who also played with Steve in group "Tierra". Vaguely I remember Jerry Salas the other Brother who played with El Chicano, but I saw him playing with them. Steve Salas from Tierra had asked me to join and form a group with him when he was just beginning to form the group.(because:I had told him I had taken two piano courses (worth one year of lessons with Mrs. Metz _piano teacher)he had even asked me if I knew of someone who would be interested in joining, and to let him know. I was working far away after school, had no car, rode buses. Regrettably I declined to join. There was a guitar player by name of Abel Zarate who went to same Abraham Lincoln High School ,who had mentioned arround 1969 or 1970 that he was joining either group Malo , El Chicano or Santana, I've searched several times at all these three groups (members) But I had never seen his name. I don't know if he actually never joined, or never was in photos nor given credit and aknowleged as a member of a group. Robert Castillo (babo) Bob Castillo, the former Dodger's Pitcher went to Lincoln with me till 1974 as well . (He past away) Moctezuma Esparza a very famous(Mexican American movie producer) , who produced movies like El Norte , Biography of Singer Selena, (with Jennifer Lopez) and many other movies. He now owns a chain of movie theaters, Also went to Lincoln High School With my cousins in early 1960's I worked for him just for a few months, in early 1980's when he owned a Cable television service("Buenavision") brought to homes, obviously via cable, in E.L.A. Abraham Lincoln High School in Lincoln heights of Los Angeles, has had several very well known students who followed either Music ,Art, Film Industry , or as in Castillos case, Sports.
I am so lucky to have enjoyed EL CHICANO, when they played at my High School and last weekend at the Gibson, Universal Studios! Also love the VIOLINIST addition to the band! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!

You are correct in that the word chicano does not mean all "Mexican/Americans." It is a word reserved for those who have chosen to be self actuated. It is for those that are aware of the role they have in our culture and society and are dedicated to continuing a positive and conscious mind state. Actions that reflect our intellectual growth and awareness.
Well put now, now you just have to change the perception of all the non born American Latino radio station who call us Mexico and Central American haters. That was a way to form a line between our real roots from Mexico. And our Natural born fathers who served American in the Miltary and other Goverment .I am a third Gerneration Chicano.
Nah I dont agree with that word "chicano". I grew up in south L.A right around the corner from all the blacks, and my block was all Mexicans, central Americans, some Cubans too. My parents came here thanx to the coyote's in the border towns. But all my life I grew up here in California (born at U.S.C medical behind EASTLAKE JUVENILE HALL). all that area I know as well as Compton,Watts, Long Beach, etc. but never have I considered myself a chicano.. JUST A SOLID MEXICAN/AMERICAN!!!
@TheSilverDubberII My local library has still got the El Chicano LP from 1970 in their archives, but absolutely nix on CD. Do you reckon I should lend it. It might be a quite nice experience : )
