I'm 67...I guess my enjoyment and love of listening to these percussive driven bands started with Santana's 1st Album...My other favorite bands from this era were Osibisa, and War. War's LP's with Eric Burdon were Great, but after he left the music they came up with was extraordinary...The fact that this style of music led me to listen to Bossa Nova, Latin, Soca, etc, etc, music has been one helluva of a wonderful ride!.
@@thomasprete-w5i I'm 67, Mandrill, Santana, War along with Chicago and the early, totally different Kool & the Gang were the groups we listened to. They'd played George Clinton shows, with Chuck Brown, etc. I've been lucky to have known them all; the Clones of Funk's drummer Mark Brown was in my band as well :) Be well, friend. You were young and inspired by the best.

Yes I agree. They're an underrated band that didn't get much recognition back in the day of performing... Although some of their music got played on the radio but not that often........
I first started listening to Mandrill back in the early 70's while I was in the military serving overseas. I still have my collection of Mandrill record albums that I bought back them. One of my top 3 favorite bands of all time !!!

PURE......RAW.......UNADULTERATED FUNK! Neftali, YOU GUYS were WAY ahead of your time. I'm in my mid 50's Brother, and I grew up listening to Mandrill. Your "Theme" describes the energy, the force in which you guys played. The tight., expert musicianship; you guys paved the way for groups like Cameo, SOS Band, Mass Production, Brick, Dazz Band, etc, 10 years later. As good as those bands were, they didn't come close to the power with which MANDRILL performed!
Mandrill is one of the coolest and most underrated bands ever!! These guys throw down the real funk!! This video is priceless and will live forever! Thanks for posting this soulful piece of music history!!!!
This is my first time hearing this multi-talented band. I'm a very big Mint Condition fan, so you already know that I'm a big supporter of LIVE INSTRUMENTATION! This truly inspires me to learn at least 5 instruments. To bad my Generation will never see this because they so stuck on today's Mainstream music, which sucks.
Hey Man, I remember you from jr high band!! I was in 8th grade and you rolled a bass drm down the steps of the band room. I played trb professionally in Philly and AC for many years. played for lots of groups and acts from the Temps to Natalie Cole to Johnny Mathis..( and lots of shit in between) nothing like the funk with horns from the 70s!!! Thanks
@cengeb: The MUSIC BUYING PUBLIC made millions for many. Blame them, not Bon Jovi or others. And, CLOWN, Bon Jovi made good but different music. Your text is swill.
Evidently, bein' able to play three or more instruments was a pre-requisite for bein' a member of this group!! These brothers still perform, and they still sound great!!!!
I still get chills hearing this amazing orchestration. They do NOT do music like this today. Mandrill is and has been one of, if not my absolute favourite artists since the 70s. They have no song I dislike.
Wow these cats can blow!!! There is no comparing musicians from this era with today. The freedom to experiment with music is long gone from the commercial music industry.
Wow, I remember this show back in the day called "Soul to Soul"...It came on channel 13 here in New York City...... This is definitely a classic.......
Actually, the show was called "Soul!" on the pre-PBS Channel 13, produced and often hosted by Ellis Haizlip, a prerequisite to "Soul Train", in which a number of now famous talent, like Earth, Wind & Fire, Ashford & Simpson, Labelle, New Birth, Jimmy Castor and Black Ivory as well as several poets and Black leaders, got their first television exposure. "Soul to Soul" was the name of the movie released around this same time which featured Roberta Flack, Les McCann, The Staple Singers, Ike & Tina Turner, Wilson Pickett and the Voices of East Harlem doing a live concert in Ghana. It has since be released on CD and DVD with Santana instead of Roberta Flack.
Wow, My Dad used to talk about this band and I had no idea who they were. He was from NY. This is a bad ass find. I had never seen them until now. I only knew of the name my dad mentioned 25 years ago. He had them on an old 8 track tape that got destroyed but he could never find a replacement. I tried to find a copy one year, i think in 1995 , of their work for a birthday gift, but to no avail. He was in the Viet Nam war and he said he played their stuff a lot and wanted to recapture a segment of his youth and his brothers in arms, by listening to them again to bring back fond memories. He was just 20 years old in 1971. R.I.P pops, UA-cam is great. Wow thanks for the upload

We could most likely find cats in their late 50's playing somwhere in central park n.y. or somewhere in oakland cali. jammin like this. My uncle & his boys would jam like this in his basement & i was @ the tender age of 4 & i'm still hooked. I love my uncle for schooling me as a youth. Peace too my old school head jazz/funk uncle!!!!!
So I'm just waking up. I turn on the tele and theres an episode of Jack Hanna's into the wild, the episode is "Mandrills of Gabon", I immediately recall as a child seeing an album [remember those?] In my uncle's collection with a Mandrill on it. I thought, wow, that would be unacceptable today, and African Americans would not be associating themselves with monkeys, but that was the 70's when everything on TV had racist undertones etc ... Then I realized that I have never listened or heard of anything by this musical group, that I was aware of. I googled and read about them on Wiki and discovered they were a funk band. OH NOW, HOOOOOLD ON!!! WHAAAT??? Me being a funkster, I had to go on UA-cam and check them out. DAMN!!! Long story short, I'm hooked! 🖤🤎Thanks Jack Hanna!😊
DAMN RIGHT! Quiet as kept, as big a Fishbone fan as I am I just couldn't help but notice how much of you guys I hear in their overall sound. It's positively mindblowing! Yeah, Mandrill seriously needs R&R Hall of Fame recognition strictly from an influential standpoint. Would be a major crime if they don't... >;-(
I remeber being in the audience at one of the B-A-D-D-E-S-T- MANDRILL concerts of all time @ Lincoln Center's Philharmonic Hall with the New York Symphony Orchestra. Mandrill entered from the back of the auditorium on this piece. WOW! One of the top 5 concerts of my LIFE!!! Love Mandrill to this day and forever!
i was in high school when i first heard mandrill now im 54 yrs old and have 9 grandchildren and i still feel the love and passion that emanates from this brothers soul still after all this years !! tnx neftali for keping the fire alive after all this years thru this great videos...
I remember this oh oh so well. High school years caught them in concert down at the Philadelphia Spectrum rotating stage up close never forget...real music them and WAR
Mandrill, I am a fan forever, I only caught one show in my lifetime, but I play at least one Mandrill recording a day. I can't say that for any other group, even my own band ! Though the music of Mandrill I have learn to LOVE ONE ANOTHER
The soundtrack of my teen years, while learning to play guitar, involved listening to my Brooklyn homies. Omar Mesa was on point. Neftali was a funky ass drummer, Coffee Cave was brilliant on keys, and the Wilson bros....what can i say?!! R.I.P. Dr. Lou Wilson and much thanks & love for the treasure trove of outstanding music you've left for us to explore.
Wow! Thanks for posting this video. I remember buying the LP when it came out and have been wanting to hear this again. Mandrill, I believe, did a few LPs; all with great music.
Charles Padro holds it down on that drum solo like a BOSS. And I love the way his drums each have their own musical “note,” even though they weren’t tuned to a specific pitch. Those old shells just sound different!
Neftali I remember paying my ^ bucks to see Mandrill at CCNY in Brooklyn and they released Fencewalk and the crowd went bonkers...I too remember those concerts in Central Park with my Yago Sangria and herbs(lol). The last time I saw anyone was about 1977 when i met Omar Ben Hassan in the World Trade Center wearing his all white Muslim garb. He was suprised anyone recognized him I'D LOVE TO SEE ALL YOU AGAIN
maybe seeing things like this will bring the feel back to playing. maybe when muzicians see this they will strive to reach a higher standard. thanx for the posting.
I remember seeing them in Providence, RI @ the Arena. They had a different bass player and they opened up for Ike and Tina Turner Revue. All of this talent for $4.50 at the door. Been a fan ever since. Mandrill-land LP was their best. Peace.
I love Mandrill!! It doesn't get any better than this. Wow. Thank you Neftali for posting this. Wow. Unbelievable. You guys are the best. My favorite band. I finally have found, after all these years, the music that I truly love. Thank you Mandrill.
I remember them from when I was a kid, even though they didn't have any hits. Happened to pick up a "best of" CD of theirs back about 10 years ago and really liked what I heard. I have an oldies show that plays a lot of not-big-hits along with hits, and have played "Fencewalk" before, as well as "Hang Loose." Love seeing and hearing this video!
These bad boys some of the baddest muthafkas on the Planet and yet very few have heard of them. Yet myself as a young Puerto Rican Hippie in NYC had my LSD mind blown away by their magnificence
One of the first concerts I got to go to as a teenager with my homies at the SPECTRUM in Philly. Got right up front of the stage. I was mesmerized by the music then and I still am today. That's true African music. Young brother's today ain't stepping up to the plate like that no more. The drums beats are still calling out to us.
I just came across this video while looking at a performance by EARTH WIND AND FIRE. I was only 3 years old in 1971, so I don't remember this tv show. Mandrill was great. My father had one of their albums. Do you still live in Philly? I was born here and still live here. Thanks Ken
Yes they are still calling. We need to [re]learn the message of the drums. Ah, them horns! Oh that rhythm! I love Mandrill, loved them THEN, love them now. Thank you for sharing!!!
Mr. Santiago......my very good friend....Brad.....turn me onto the tune Fence Walk........a very long time ago........the last 2 years another good friend of mine has been playing Mandrill albums straight through while we jam on some percussion instruments........man I got to say it’s so damn freaking good to have been so lucky.........I was playing Brads Drums an he said try this tune out.........I just sat there.........listening.........he said....you know who this is.......no I said.................then he said..........I know the drummer...........well sir........he told me you have a new album out.....and I need to check it out........that was just last week.......it’s been one great ride...all the music an band over the past 20 years has been really good for me......personally..........just want to say Thanks.......and hopefully I can get to see you jam in person......... Buenos dias señor

i was in high school when i first heard mandrill now im 54 yrs old and have 9 grandchildren and i still feel the love and passion that emanates from this brothers soul still after all this years !! tnx neftali for keping the fire alive after all this years thru this great videos...
Real Instruments!!!🎺🎹🎻🎼🔊
Real Vocals!!!!🎤🎵🎤🎼🎤🎶
Real Music!!!!!!!
And it gets better; REAL TALENT.
I was tempted to get the album.
I remember this oh oh so well. High school years caught them in concert down at the Philadelphia Spectrum rotating stage up close never forget...real music them and WAR
You can not help but feel the Afro Caribbean vibe to this performance . They were truly master musicians who played off the charts!
Yes, Central America representing! Oh, and of course the journey to Brooklyn NY.
Ginger Baker🏆
Charles Padro🏆
Thanks so much Neftali Santiago, can't be topped. PERIOD
Uniquely talented and versatile.
FANTASTIC!!! WONDERFUL!!! EXCELLENT!!!
SPECTACULAR!!!

Great an fantastic group. Brilliant music. I know them when I was 10 years old. A big influence in my life.
My dad had the album to this when it first came out. We really got into it when it was playing! I was 11 at the time.
A gem. Thanks for sharing this video.
I love this music. This group was so underrated. Thank God they're still out there working doing their thing.
Saw these guys at Kingsborough College back in the early seventies with The Happenings, what a great show!
Just love these guys. I have all thier albums. South American jazz fusion at its best.
Man , I really miss those days of great creative music.....
this is the jam! thanks for posting this--i still rock it regular. so happy when i can see anything about mandrill.
Super talented musicians, damn good music, glad I have all their albums
Wow these dudes could play, bravo!💯👏
I saw them in DC in the 70's at the Duff Show at DC stadium and they were SENSATIONAL!
He was suprised anyone recognized him
I'D LOVE TO SEE ALL YOU AGAIN
OLD SCHOOL!!!
The "Noise" of today will never become Classics!!!❤
What's up, Neftali? Whether it was back in the day, or tomorrow, you and the fellas STILL bring it!!!!!!
I was a kid when my brother brought there "Mandrill" album home. What a blast from the past! Thanks for posting it!
maybe seeing things like this will bring the feel back to playing. maybe when muzicians see this they will strive to reach a higher standard. thanx for the posting.
I remember seeing them in Providence, RI @ the Arena. They had a different bass player and they opened up for Ike and Tina Turner Revue. All of this talent for $4.50 at the door. Been a fan ever since. Mandrill-land LP was their best. Peace.
One of the most breath-taking performances i've ever seen! Thanx for post!!
I love Mandrill!! It doesn't get any better than this. Wow. Thank you Neftali for posting this. Wow. Unbelievable. You guys are the best. My favorite band. I finally have found, after all these years, the music that I truly love. Thank you Mandrill.
THANK OUR CREATOR for The REAL, UNDISPUTED 💥 M A N D R I L L 💥
i love this band
Yes
I just came across this video while looking at a performance by EARTH WIND AND FIRE. I was only 3 years old in 1971, so I don't remember this tv show. Mandrill was great. My father had one of their albums. Do you still live in Philly? I was born here and still live here. Thanks Ken
I was at all their shows at the Spectrum
I was there too!!! These youngsters don’t know what REAL music is with REAL instruments.
Yes they are still calling. We need to [re]learn the message of the drums. Ah, them horns! Oh that rhythm! I love Mandrill, loved them THEN, love them now. Thank you for sharing!!!
Great Band! I missed them.
THIS IS AMAZING
Never thought there was a video of this!!!!
Thank you Neftali!!
