Work is Totally Different in Retirement

- Orchids are what she raised in her greenhouse and "Harry Lauder's Walking Stick" is the name of the tree. It has gnarly, contorted branches. Work isn't the chore it was when you had a job. It's at your pace and on your time. There is no rush to get to anything. It actually becomes a joy to do not the hassle it was before retiring. I haven't done an ounce of actual work sine I've retired. Just messing around really.

That was a beautiful slide show. Just because you don't work for money anymore doesn't mean you're not making a difference. You're doing the kind of work that makes the world a better place to live. A good example to your children and others. Nice "job." ;)
I'm just glad it turned out ok and watchable. The music was a little loud but I didn't know how to dial it back. True on the work thing. I guess if you enjoy what you are dong it doesn't feel like work. No matter what I'm doing in retirement it feels more like messing around instead of work. Thanks for watching. Steve
🤘
Thanks for watching. Steve
Pics of the garden are gorgeous. Thanks so much for sharing.
It was a great place to mess around at. Really can't get a good perspective from the pictures. Some of those Azaleas and Rhododendrons are HUGE. All the different colors and variety of plants was amazing. Peonies, Orchids, Hostas etc. Thanks for watching. Steve
Thanks Steve, another good video!
When you no longer have to work no matter what you do it just feels like I'm hanging out. Things definitely change once you retire. Take care. Steve
First of all, I enjoyed your retirement chuckle lol! That hit deep. Can’t wait til I have one. I can’t relate to the feeling of life in retirement but I sure am looking forward to it. March 2026 can’t come soon enough.
My hubby and I just returned home from a little trip in Utah’s Zion National Park. Now I have to prepare for work on Monday 😔 I long for the day when we can take these trips and when we head back home, we’re meandering through the day doing the little things we enjoy doing.
It happens all the time and I don't even realize it. The stress relief and the fact that I'm not always worn out from work just makes you feel good constantly. I remember those "Sunday Scaries". You loose them in retirement. The variety of things I get into during the week is what I enjoy most. Like you said "Meandering through your day" doing whatever it is that you want to do and having the time to do it. Just can't be beat. Thanks and take care. Steve
Helping a friend rarely feels like work.
Great slide show. Looks like the perfect place to mess around.
It was great. You're right anytime I lend a hand I never think of it as work. Doesn't matter what it is I'm doing. Funny how that is. Thanks for watching. Steve
I like to get enough of my "to do" list done to feel justified in all my "do nothing". Beautiful tomato plants at your place, and hostas at your friend's place. That magnolia sounds like it must have been awesome. I would have loved to see it.
The reason for my retirement routine. Stuff actually gets done and plenty of time for nothing. Otherwise I'd be doing to much of one and not enough of the other. That magnolia was awesome and I'd never seen one before. She had 2. We always referred to it as a Swamp magnolia but I believe it's actually called Big Leaf magnolia. Native in the south but uncommon. Grows 65 ft plus with the largest leaves of any deciduous tree at 30 inches. Thanks for watching. Steve
Gorgeous flower and plants I’m green with envy. Enjoyed the video very much,
It was a lovely place to spend some time messing around at. Always something to do and met a lot of their gardening friends. Thanks for watching. Steve
My Dad used to call it ‘piddling’ around. It’s crazy how our day fills up. Even though we do some work it’s enjoyable. Nice looking garden Steve.
Since I've retired everything feels like I'm just piddlin. I guess if you enjoy what you're doing it doesn't feel like work. Thanks for watching. Steve
Enjoyed the slide show, and as always hearing from you thanks Steve.
I could have shortened it 5-10 seconds for a short but didn't really want to. Glad it turned out ok and watchable. The music was a little loud but I didn't know how to dial it down. Thanks for watching. Steve
Always chores to get done, but now I can do them on my schedule. Good stuff, as always. Thanks.
Makes even the chores I didn't like doing a little less undesirable being retired. Retirement is one of the best drugs a person can have for making you feel good I believe. Thanks for watching. Steve
You reside in a beautiful area .
Thank you for sharing Steve. That was great. I love your UA-cam channel. Planning to retire next year at 62 if I can figure out what retirement will look like for me. I believe I’m ready financially and I’m looking forward to not having the stress, but I’m concerned that my high A personality will make me bored in retirement. I guess I have a year to figure it out. 😢
Thanks for the kind words. Congratulations on your decision to retire next year. Once our numbers work retirement turns out to be a big mental game. The stress relief and not having work always on the brain helps with that. That free mind space we get by retiring is a big help with the boredom. Instead of having work on the brain we're finding new opportunities and activities all the time. The key is to act on them. That's the hard part for a lot of us. It will take a little work on your part to figure things out but once you do Retirement is a great period of life. Thanks and take care. Steve
That's what I do. Meander about the yard and garden. It's definitely not work!
It felt like it to me when I had an actual job but now it's just what I do. Piddlin, tinkering and messing around pretty much all I do. No matter what it is, none of it feels like work in retirement. Thanks for watching. Steve
Good stuff Steve. Yeah, it doesn’t seem like work, it’s just passing the time. I call it “piddling”. Lol. Take care Robert
It really doesn't but that's what I called it when I had a job. Felt like I was working all the time. Now it's just Piddlin, tinkering and messing around. Thanks for watching. Steve
It’s important to keep moving. That’s what you do. Me too.
Every little bit helps. Trying to keep as much in working order for as long as I can. Thanks for watching. Steve
It’s a shame to destroy all that for some housing!😢 Beautiful!
Agree with that myself. She did take a few plants with her to the new place. It was a pretty place to spend a few hours a week messing around . Thanks for watching. Steve
I need a friend like you!
So do I.😁 I don't really do a lot just things they can't really do anymore. Climb a ladder, dig a hole for plants, move furniture, repair a deck etc. just stuff that gets harder as we age. I enjoy it and it helps them plus they save a few bucks. Win, win. Thanks and take care. Steve
@@retirementcorner I'm thankful I have sons and some money.
Thanks for the tunes,Steve.
It was a little loud but I didn't know how to dial it back. Thanks for watching. Steve
Beautiful
I thought so. It was an absolute joy to "Go Play in the Woods" over there. Rhododendrons, running cedar, peonies etc. just all kinds of stuff. Lots of upkeep though. Chainsaw, mulch, trimming etc. but a lovely place to do it in. Thanks for watching. Steve
Great video…..always learning from you doc!
Dennis
Always great to hear from you Dennis. I'm learning from you and all the other comments I get also. Hope all is going well. Thanks for watching. Steve
I call my retirment work, "tinkering". Usually outside in the yard or garage or in the basement.
I do a lot of tinkering and piddlin. Whether it's here or somewhere else. It just not as taxing as when I was working for a living and doing it. Thanks for watching. Steve
Stunning!
It was a really great place to spend a few hours a week messing around. Hard to really get a perspective from the pictures. Some of those Rhododendrons and Azaleas are huge. The multiple colors and plant types was amazing. Orchids, Peonies, Hostas etc. was just amazing to me. Thanks for watching. Steve
What beautiful flowers!
It was a beautiful place to spend a few hours a week just messing around. You can't get a real good perspective from the pictures. Some of those Rhododendrons and Azaleas where huge and the variety of plants was just amazing to me. Thanks for watching. Steve
Agree to all. Hard to explain how retirement changes ya lol. Great video
Hard to explain how you change in retirement to someone that's not retired. You really do in some small way and it really makes retirement enjoyable and laid back. Thanks. Steve
❤❤❤
Thanks for watching. Steve
Nice slideshow
I could have shortened it 5-10 seconds for a short but didn't really want to. Glad it turned out ok and watchable. The music was a little loud but I didn't know how to dial it down. Thanks for watching. Steve
Birds are singing today.
It was the morning shift. They're always fairly active and singing till about 10 then they calm down till the evening. Thanks for watching. Steve
Work is medicine to the soul, but too much medicine can be a poison. That's the difference in work after retirement and before retirement.
Exactly! A great way to put it. I'm going to write that down in my notebook. It's all about balance and not too much of one. By having a loose schedule to go by I get that balance. Thanks for watching. Steve
I do miss my hostas. One of the downsides of moving to portugal 🇵🇹
Really? Why is that? The weather, soil or what? I bet you can grow Orchids real well there. She had to have a greenhouse for those. Thanks for watching. Steve
I could use some scheduling ideas. I haven't done squat since I got layed off.
Same happened to me last year when I got away from my schedule/routine. Nothing got done, work or play. Just ended up kind of wasting time. Some can get away with free wheeling it but I couldn't. Made a big difference in my ability to adjust and get comfortable in retirement I believe. Thanks for watching. Steve
Deer are beautiful animals. Nothing cuter than a small spotted fawn. But, they sure do a lot of damage in a yard. They eat many of our plants and flowers. Our revenge is we like deer hunting, and really enjoy eating venison. We save money not buying much beef when we have venison in the freezer.
Exactly how it was handled at her other place. Even had a damage permit from the game department. Helped a little but just to many of them around. Try that in the neighborhood she's in now and the law will be there before he drops. The problem with civilization. Thanks for watching. Steve
Steve you got deer coming in your yard to eat your garden? I noticed the hog panels around the garden. when I looked at your place I did not think you would have deer coming into your yard.
The last year I had an inground garden they ate everything and still get the wife's hostas every year. Every night they cruise by and snack. They have built so many neighborhoods around here they've run the deer out of the woods and into the neighborhoods. We see them all hours of the day and knight and lots of them get hit by cars. A little bit farther out in the county we could control them ourselves. You try that here and the law will show up before he hits the ground. Turkeys, foxes, coons etc. a little bit of everything here. Haven't come by any hogs yet. Thanks for watching. Steve
Using snuff in retirement is bad for your health.
So is eating fried food, drinking sweet tea, squirrel hunting, fishing alone, sitting 23 out of 24hrs. a day etc. I don't plan to quit any of that either but I appreciate your concern. Thanks for watching. Steve
Your Hosta's are flowering already? Ours here in southern Ontario, Canada don't flower until August/September.
Man that's late. As long as she can keep the deer away they do pretty good. She has to plant things that deer don't particularly like and she tries to keep things sprayed. This fence has worked great and no trouble with the HOA. She's tickled to death over it. Thanks for watching. Steve
what is that white vent by the gutter is that a crawl space vent
Yep. Just for decoration though. The actual vent is regular size. Part of living in an HOA neighborhood. The appearance from the road has to be consistent and similar. That's why we had to put up the little deer fence. Can't see it from the road and doesn't affect the neighborhood appearance. Glad I don't live in one. Couldn't afford the fines. Thanks for watching. Steve
You ought to have that lower jaw looked at. You might have a serious infection.
🙄
Funny you mentioned that. Had an appointment the next day. Found out I had a dip in.😂 But honestly I did have a 6 month checkup the next day. All turned out fine. Thanks for watching. Steve
