You hit the nail on the head when you said that the Goldwing uses an older version of Bluetooth. That right there is the crux of the problem, no matter what kind of headset you have, and no matter what kind of wireless car play adapter you have. It will force you to have to go through this crazy trial and error to find a sequence that will work at least a majority of the time, but eventually, somewhere down the road, it will give you fits. The best solution I have found is to forget about connecting wirelessly. I connect via USB (phone on handlebar mount and have the connection wired out of the cubby and up the handlebars). Works 99.9% of the time and charges my phone all day long as well. Doesn't matter whether I plug in the phone then turn on the bike then turn on the bluetooth helmet system, or in whatever order.... still works 99.9% of the time, so for me..... wireless is not even a consideration.

Got a Bluetooth adapter plugged into the usb port in my pannier to fool the bike into thinking I’ve a headset connected so if I don’t want to use a helmet with Sena I can still use CarPlay. I got the carlinkit v5.0 wireless adapter with a delay set of 20 seconds so the ‘headset’ pairs first before the CarPlay setup. Worked for 2 weeks solid every time. No disconnects either. 2023 gold wing. I’ve the Bluetooth adapter in my pannier taped to the top of the inside of the pannier with good 3m tape so it doesn’t interfere with the gold wing pannier bag.

Exactly what I did. Put a usb outlet in my trunk. I plugged a wireless headset into the charger on charge. Extended the USB outlet from the glovebox with cable to my bars. When I start the bike it recognizes the headset then I plug in my iPhone. If I don't get in a big hurry carplay opens up.

Thanks for the video Chris. But the real problem is Honda. Why they haven't improved the technology to at least match what they put in their least expensive cars (like reliable Blue Tooth and HomeLink (as a std)) is beyond understanding. I am reading all of the different "hoops" people have to go through on a motorcycle that costs more than some of their cars, yet works seamlessly in an auto. I hope Honda is watching and listening (though it never seems they do). Maybe at some point you can get a Honda Rep (yeah right) to address these points and some of the improvements we would all like to see. I have written to them a few times and just get the stock answers that never really address the real question as to whether they will fix things. All that said, the advice is still good. I will probably stick with the direct connection in the Cubby, though like you, I always forget to take the phone out before I walk away (ugh). Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

On the Carlinkit, you can configure a startup delay, I set it to 30 seconds, which gives much more time to connect the headset to the GW, even if you need to manually connect using the Bluetooth GW menu.

I brought the black case Carlinkit on your recommendation, I have the Cardo Bold, I could not get it to connect reliably. The key to success was to log into the device (Carlinkit) while it is connected to your Bluetooth. To do this you scan the QR code in the manual, a IP address pops up and you tap on it. Now your in the settings, adjust the “start up delay” to 10 seconds. Now it will allow time for the bike to start up and headset to connect before the Carlinkit tries to connect.

I have the Cardo headset with Apple Carplay. I had intermittent connection issues. Yesterday I tried turning on the headset first then immediately turning on the bike. So far, this seemed to work every time. Only time will tell if this continues to work. Thanks for testing out this wireless adapter. When it works it's a real time saver.

I read good reviews of the Ottocast version, found one on Amazon at a reduced price, so I bought one and tried it out. Nifty little unit.
The initial setup was a piece of cake. Startup and connection to my 18 DCT Tour, iPhone 13 Pro Max and Sena 20S headset was also effortless, all very encouraging and I can finally ride with my phone in my jacket pocket where it belongs. But when trying it out on a 20 mile ride, I hit a fatal flaw: after 5 min, the adapter would drop its connection, reconnect and pick up where it left off, then rinse and repeat like clockwork. I tried all sorts of troubleshooting, tried hints the forums of similar experiences, but no dice.
I sent it back and I will have a Carlinkit here tomorrow so I can follow your advice. I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks for pioneering this!

I have a 2021 Gold Wing Tour and use Sena SRL headset in a Shoei Neotech II helmet. This sequence works every time, without fail. I turn on my head set, plug in my iPhone, then start the bike. If I do it that way, it works every time. I've tried other sequences but never found any that is reliable until I started doing it the way I explained above. Try it. You will see. I prefer to plug my phone in as it keeps it charged and I don't have to buy another piece of gear. I seldom forget that it is in the bike.

Since iOS17 headaches have left my GL Tour with Apple Car Play. As long as I disconnect the phone cable everytime I turn the bike off and only reconnect one I've started the bike and wait for my Cardo to connect, it all works fine. Amazing. Before I had to disconnect everything and even sometimes, disconnect the phone from my headset for it to work.

I have the same wireless gadget but a cardio headset. I find it connects every time no matter what sequence I use. The only problem is sometimes it works immediately and other times it can take up to 5 minutes but it always eventually connects. If I need it right away I can unplug it and plug it back in. I also always turn on my helmet first but I’ll try it your way and se what happens. Thanks for the update.

Good info. I use the sena 50s, and occasionally will use a Bluetooth adapter to connect the bike to the iPhone. The main issue is that connecting wirelessly does draw down the phone battery a lot faster. I also have a Garmin GPS. I need to see if it will connect to the sena as a secondary connection. It's a backup to the internal GPS and Carplay, so I have not messed with it.

I purchased the Carlink "5.0". Works well with BOTH the Apple AND Android. I've used it in the car also. Since the car connection is simpler, it never fails. The 21 DCT is the same hit and miss as yours, using a Sena 50S. Will try your suggestion and evaluate. Thanks for the update.

So I replied to this issue previously, but will add what I've found since. Just to recap, I have the same 2018 Goldwing and the Sena Impulse helmet. This is what works for me. 1) I start the motorcycle and it does default to FM, but I get no audio to the helmet. If I don't get FM audio to the helmet then I know Carplay will also not work. 2) I turn on the Sena Impulse helmet (it never connects, no FM, nothing). 3) I turn off the helmet. 4) I turn the helmet back on and it connects every time and I can then hear FM through the helmet. 5) I then plug in my iPhone and Carplay works as designed. So to recap, I turn the helmet on/off twice. This is a little different than what you've described where you turn off the bike and then restart. I never have to turn off the bike once it's on. I would agree with the issue of having to use the iPhone with a USB connection and then leaving it... I've done that. I may give your device a try. Another great video. Thanks for staying on top of this.

I have the same issue with my Cardo Edge and my 2023 Goldwing Tour. Many times, I'll start the bike then turn on my headset. It tells me "Bike Connected" but no sound. I turn the Cardo off, wait for the indicator on the display to go out, turn the Cardo back on, "Bike Connected", and I can hear on the FM (mine defaults there as well). After tuning my XM, then I can plug in my phone, and Car Play will work. I have my phone mounted on the handlebar currently, but living in Florida the heat is playing havoc with my phone. Putting the phone in the cubby is not an option because it is way TOO HOT with the door closed...plus I forget it almost every time. Thanks for the video...gonna try the wireless route to see how it works.

Not sure why the need for wireless. If you use CarPlay for navigation (best use), then it eats battery life and needs a connection. My sequence has worked reliably for the last 2 years on a 21 GW with a few different Cardo headsets. Turn on the bike and let it fully boot up while putting gear on. Put helmet on and turn on Cardo headset (I use an Edge, Bold, and Freecom4+ on various helmets). Wait to hear a radio station or static (usually 2-5 sec), then plug in the iPhone. This works every time. A couple of notes, on my Edge the GW is paired as a Bike and I turn off bluetooth on the iPhone so that the phone does not pair to the headset. Headset are paired to the iPhone for rinding my other bike. If the GW is your only bike, do not pair the headset to the phone. Also, my phone is mounted to the handlebar via a Quadlock and a lightening cable connects in the cubby, through a hole, then up under the handlebars. If making a quick gas stop, shut off the bike to the aux side and everything stays connected.

    Hi
Interesting that you have your Impulse paired to your phone? Typically your Impulse is paired to your GW and your phone is paired to your GW. I thought I heard your Impulse say “phone connected “.
I don’t have my phone paired up to my Impulse- only GW. And Impulse paired to GW. With this setup I turn on Impulse and within 30 seconds or so start GW. CarPlay connects flawlessly. I do not turn of Impulse for the rest of my riding day. No matter how many times I turn off GW, CarPlay always reconnects.
    Hope this helps
    Jon

Hello Cruiseman, I just purchased the Loboair P38 Car Play adapter. I installed this earlier this evening and it hooked to my iPhone 14 and the bike with no issues. I will see how it performs in the next few rides, then provide some feedback. My wife and I use the Sena 50S Bluetooth system and have also been very happy with their performance. The only issue is they will generally not hook to the bike the first time you turn them on. However, we cycle them off and back on and all ops normal. I’ll try your suggestion about turning the Sena unit on right after the Goldwing logo and again let you know. Thanks for the video.

I'm in the market for a new bike. Honestly this nonsense with CarPlay connections is one of the main reasons I may not buy a GoldWing. The 2024 is the same non-touch display under plastic as the 2018; that's six years.
What's even more annoying is Honda has the electronics/avionics resources to fix this. Bluetooth 5.3 was spec'd in 2001 so should have been on the 2022 Goldwing.
I know some would say this is a minor issue upon which to make a decision about buying a bike. But, it's something that will annoy me each and every time I get on it.
I applaud Honda for being early to the market with CarPlay but they should have fixed this a long time ago.

Well, I went out and tried exactly what you suggested on my '23 Gold Wing Tourer and Cardo PackTalk Bold. No luck. However, I am now able to consistently connect my old iPhone 7 to the wired connection. Works every time and I love CarPlay. I simply do not know what is up with the combination of Bike, Helmet (cardo) phone, and Goldwing. When it works, it works perfectly (when it works) More often than not, it just does not. Am I missing something? The phone's bluetooth connects to the Car Link (ver5) fine, but the the Cardo just keeps flashing Blue.
Slight Update: I went out and tried it again. Worked fine (could not believe it) Turned off the bike and tried again. Perfect. Okay, for the 3 / 3 try. FAIL!!!! Could not get it to connect again.
So the direct connect with my old iphone 7 (That sat strapped to the handlebars of my VTX 1800 for many 1,000's of miles,) still lives to entertain me for many 1,000's of miles again.
Wishing you and your loved ones a very Happy and Joyful Thanksgiving.

You mentioned that you have the Sena Impulse Connected to the Goldwing on "Channel A" and the GPS connected on "Channel B". The configuration options for syncing devices on the Sena Impulse are: 1) Phone pairing, 2) Second mobile phone pairing, 3) Phone selected pairing, 4) Media selected pairing, 5) GPS pairing, 6) Delete all pairings, 7) Remote control pairing, 8) Universal intercom pairing, 9) Factory reset. There is no option for putting something on Channel A, or Channel B? I can get my Sena synced with no problem, but when I connect the Garmin Zumo XT2, I lose the Sena connection. I'm assuming their both trying to use the same option. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks

i have a 2022 dct. just my 2 cents, i've run a data cable from the glove box to the handlebar perch and mount my phone there. it's an android phone. since i don't use a headset, i had to "fool" the wing into thinking i am using one. i found a doggle from a GL forum thread that i keep plugged into the left saddle bag that "looks" like a headset. i never disconnect it or power it up since it derives power from that usb port and comes on when the bike is on. connecting my phone to that extended data cable can be done in any sequence. before the bike is started, any time during the start up sequence or after the bike is started. it doesn't seem to matter and it works every time. i can find the name of that doggle device if any one wants it.

I have a 2019 DCT, Sena 50S, Carlinkit 5.0. That process works about 50% of the time. But once it connects, the rest of the day, just turn off the bike and restart works perfectly. Stopping for gas, turn off the bike, leave everything else alone, finish filling up turn on and start the bike. It connects perfectly. Stop for lunch, same thing. It’s the first time of the day that I have problems. My biggest problem now is when talking on the phone or text or Siri, I can hear them, they can’t hear me. I’ve changed headsets, software, settings, nothing matters. My phone is not paired to the bike. One guy I talked to said his did the same. It turned out to be one of the radio components that was fixed under warranty. I still have 6 months left. I better get it checked out.

I have a 2022 Honda NT1100 and have the very same experience. Frustrating. The experience is more aggravated at a gas stop. I agree with your sequence but at a gas stop it means turning the headset off and then back on again and I don't always get that done. 🙄Further complicating the procedure is that I rotate between 4 helmets. (2 open face 2 flip type) 3 helmets being Schuberth the other a Caberg with a Cardo Freecom 4+. The connections can vary from reliable to spotty to unusable. While your sequence also proves reasonably good for me too it none the less also is not 100% predictable and while better is not what it should be. In 3 of the headsets I tried pairing as "phone 1, or phone 2, or GPS," and that got some improvement but still not what I consider a solution. Oh, I connect by USB cable and keep my phone in the tank bag. Sometimes the phone drops off and needs to be replugged-in. I'm using a proper data cable and found improvements when I switched to a high speed cable but,,, I think the issue is more Bluetooth connectivity related. Once the system is working it functions nicely. Sorry I don't have any substantive solutions to offer but just sharing my frustrations as well. 😊

I can get my wireless to connect every time, but then it disconnects and reconnects over and over. I have no idea why. I use the same wireless adapter in the car and it works flawlessly every time. It makes me crazy! I want to get the phone out of the cubby and in back. It nearly burns it up in that dumb cubby thing in the hot summer. Black bike too. Even worse. WTH didn’t they allow CarPlay to work from the trunk.

cardo(BT) to bike channel 1, cardo(BT) to phone channel 2. turn on bike, music starts, turn on headset, headset icon appears on bike, plug in phone to bike with "appropriate" cable. works every time. even when i stop for gas or food. just plug in phone and its ready. by using a wireless connection device you take away the capabilities of the phone. the phone can be another navigation app(without having to purchase a zumo), the phone can display real time weather to help you dodge storms, etc... yes there's a sequence but, you need to start the bike and turn on the headset anyways. all youre doing is plugging in your phone with the right cable.
