When the dude went down at the end of round 1 Xiao could have really damaged him. The fact that he hesitated and didn't follow through increased my respect for him tenfold. @@acts9835 Most pro fights are 2 guys trying not to lose instead of aggressively trying to win. Modern pro MMA and boxing unfortunately has devolved a lot to where it is more about fame than having a passion of fighting. We see this with how fighters and their management meticulously try to get only matchups with favorable opponents, and if faced with a big fight with a tough opponent then they try to promote as much as possible for a big paycheck in case they lose they will still come away with big cash. From a business perspective this is all good, but from a fan's perspective all this media promo shit is tiresome. I just prefer fighters who fight because it is what they love.

Very rare that you see someone retain classical form in a traditional art, when put under real pressure from a fully resisting opponent. This guy's technique is so beautiful. It almost looks like I'm watching a tekken character. there was 4 times i saw that he could have ended, but it seems like he just chose not to or didnt know how. His offense and defense blended together really smoothly tho and it was honestly awesome to watch.
Some boxing training would really help with his defense, striking angles, spacing, and footwork. He rarely utilizes head movement, making him a sitting duck for a devastating counter punch after leaving his chin high, stationary, and exposed while striking. The exchange @ 2:17 is a perfect example of those bad striking habits boxing would help remedy.
he was great to watch, if I was in the ring I'd be rushing him hard every time he spent too much time on one leg. He frequently didn't have both feet planted and I would've tried to exploit that. That being said, I don't think I'd win lol

Thats usually the biggest problem. People can know and be great at everything in a martial art. But if you don't have that dawg in you you'll never last. If someone's a fighter someone's a fighter, put the 'worst fighting style' with someone that's just got that killer instinct against someone with the 'best fighting style' that doesn't know how to take one on the chin or what to do when their technique doesn't land. Best thing about Xiao is that he can take a real hit. Loved how he integrated his Wing Chun with modern MMA moves. He made it work. As a former Wing Chun practioner, I can safely say that traditional Wing Chun on its own is not enough against a well trained MMA fighter. You have to be willing to adapt and incorporate other more modern styles of fighting.
Absolutely right ive integrated more boxing techniques with wing Chun as I've gotten more muscular from when I started out as a teen. So now I am able to use power as well.
Yes, to all of that. It was great to see him use Wing Chun so richly. The footwork, and using blocks/strikes at the same time are key moves from the art. And he used em. Great stuff.

@@efafe4972 That's helpful insight. Yeah, it's the defense which I recognize as wing chun. It's a simultaneous block-attack motion. Also, his stance is focused on the opponent's center, which is wing-chun in my eyes.

I like how the Wing Chun guy integrated spinning kicks and chokes into his style, very balanced. Very impressive. The opponents coach told him to go in close to try and trap him. That was a mistake to tell his fighter that. As Wing Chun is specialized in very close quarter combat, which I think cost him the fight.
I thought wing chun was based around using your opponents energy against him. Also I noticed that Everytime the brawler would close the gap and swing up too long would have a problem and soon retreat to maintain distance. I think the problem wasn’t because he zoned in on him but he wasn’t aware of where he was placing his punches and even his timing
I was expecting the Brawler to get the win, but I was shocked how good the Wing Chun Fighter was. I have never seen someone like him be able to connect the moves and not lose focus. I like this fight, it's fresh and entertaining.
Fun fight! This is what I hoped we'd see in the early UFCs. Wing Chun vs. brawler, boxing vs. Kenpo, Tae Kwon Do vs. San Shou, etc. Instead, most of those early strikers ended up on the ground early and had ugly grappling matches, since they hadn't trained for the ground. Also liked how Xiao immediately went to sit with his opponent. Very respectful as martial artists should be.
Why I generally preferred K1 to UFC. I wouldn't have gone so far as to call the latter, "Two guys rolling around on the mat," but it was close. Much prefer a stand-up fight.
@@Peatingtune Yeah, but most K-1 fights I've seen were between guys who both had Dutch kickboxing styles. UFC became boring ground & pound and all the fanboys that used to deepthroat MMA like it was the "streets" swore a MF spider laying on the ground can beat a MF standing up with a weapon 💀
The grappling matches were only ugly on the receiving end- I was studying BJJ at the time and we cheered our asses off every time one of our heroes humbled some huge beast in the octagon.
TO THE FIGHTERS: Now that was a fight! What superb technique from Xiao Long. When you took your stance I could tell you used an unconventional technique. And then I noticed your shirt. Wing Chun is a scarcely used method in MMA, mostly due to its focus on technique as opposed to destructive force or combat sport practicality. But you upheld the fundamentals while adapting them to stand up striking, case in point, that beautiful static back fist. You mostly see a spinning backlist borrowed from kickboxing in MMA. And right when you think that this fighter must be a staunch traditionalist, you finish with a standing rear naked choke! CRAZY!!! Stellar work friend. I'd love to see you fight again. To Peanut, massive props for gloving up and stepping into the yard. You have an incredibly strong chin and fighting spirit. I'd love to see you return as well. UPDATE: 2.8k likes?!?! That's the thing. Mma is very heavily weighted towards grappling, ground-fighting and submissions. Any system that doesn't emphasise those is marked as "inferior" by people that forget what the first M in "mixed martial arts" stands for. The reality is that any system works well within the constraints of its style.
It’s wing chun… I wouldn’t go far to say superb just swing at his face wing chun has basically no guard and that’s why it always gets destroyed in real mma. If other bro didn’t drink as many beers he woulda probably won just swing wildly

Not much Wing Chun on display here bro 95% of what they teach us is in close fighting and how to plant our feet...I didnt see the winner take up a single Wing Chun fighting stance worth a damn.
Technique is one thing... But to have the conditioning and confidence to wade through an opponent's offense and attack an opening is everything. Good job!
Lol, is this what people call mad skills? Fuck maybe i am a much better fighter than i thought, i look at this and see something sloppier than an after grog bog.. Neither 1 can fight even remotely.
These guys aren't conditioned like pro MMA fighters, that's probably why it looks slow to you. I'm not saying they are out of shape by regular standards, but it helps you appreciate just how fit those pro fighters are. Most normal people are utterly exhausted after 2-3 minutes of fighting.
There's also a method to the wing-chun fighter's lack of speed. Slowing down your movements and then suddenly increasing them when you have an opening can really throw people off guard. I do it with sparring also.
It's because their cardio isn't the level you're used to seeing. Honestly, this is still faster (for longer) than real life, and 1000x more technical. Both of these dudes clearly train a lot
Awesome, have followed SB for years, this stands out as one of the better ones. Just from the unique combination of different styles and a refreshing viewing experience seeing how Wing Chung is used against a regular fighter. Highly entertaining and educational. Respect to both.
Love the Streetbeefs community. Everyone from the fans to the fighters have such passion for the sport. As well as the philosophy behind martial arts. I enjoy reading the play by plays and breakdowns of the fights by fans in the comments. More often than not, incredibly insightful and helps view a more technical understanding of the fight. This is just something you rarely ever get from UFC. Integrity and heart.
There's something about the UFC that kinda turns me off. I feel like there's more class and respect in some of these street leagues than in professional organized ones. At least on the surface.
As others have said, this is one of the best applications I’ve seen for wing chun. What I find interesting is the effectiveness of the chain punching. By nature, they’re un-telegraphed which makes them harder to defend. It reminds me of that video with Michael Jai White where he’s teaching Kimbo Slice and some other dudes the huge difference between telegraphed and un-telegraphed punching. The chain punching paired with the defensive/offensive front kick seem to be pretty effective. Wing Chun gets a bad wrap, but there’s definitely some stuff in the system that can be utilized in mixed martial arts. I mean, Bruce Lee was no joke, no matter what the naysayers say.
@@fastestmanon3legs454 doesn’t matter. It’s clear that the techniques were working. No one is saying wing chun alone would win. All I’m saying is that it’s clear that the techniques are effective. What I like about Xiao is that he's not just using Wing Chun techniques. He's also applying TKD kick boxing techniques and grappling with that rear neck choke. It's a very good blend which goes to show you that you need more than one tactic/technique depending on range.

Xiao long is one of my new favorite fighters. As a practitioner for almost 10 years it's real nice to see another Wing Chun fighter in the ring. Like any other combat skill it can be messy. He took hits, but he maintained structure, forward energy, and controlled his space allowing him to get the win. Keep up the great work.
Your a wing chump that's the difference. You would get your backside handed back to you with your patty cakes style. Xiao you can tell has sparred in the ring. Your normal wing chun practitioner lives in a bubble and will go into shock after being hit for real.

The Brawler did great for his skill level. He had some good shots and follow ups that at first XL did not anticipate (perhaps treating this as a warm up spar). Once the Brawler pushed the form harder, XL amplified himself as well and it was obvious that his conditioning is much more extensive and he is far more adapted to fighting/sparring especially in cardio and being use to taking body hardening shots.

@@DennisBLee Interesting; we have a different view on this, though. My years in (southern) China have shown otherwise. Especially within religious circles (where humility is expected). A Chinese friend of mine had also put it in her email address to refer to herself in a humble manner.
It means "young dragon" in this context, it doesn't imply humbleness. If the word 'xiao" (little or small) is combined with "de" (younger brother) and used by someone calling himself as one when he is speaking to another person who is not his blood brother then it implied humbleness.

@@CleverTatic yeah I am. Wing chun utilises incredibly bad body mechanics. That's why Bruce Lee didn't use or recommend punching in a wing chun style. Parry's and limb trapping from wing chun may be useful in some circumstances. But more risky than other approaches like head movement and general blocking.
@@dmythica i actually disagree partially. I agree the dudes technique is very bad. its pretty much looks like hes never even sparred. However, i do think this technique of kicking could be very effective and lethal if there was more sparring. it would be a wonderboy type style which everyone knows is incredibly effective in terms of striking. So yeah you're correct this guy is pretty bad but its not necessarily the style that isnt suited for mma.
Xiao Long I wasn't on the receiving end but it looked like you were pulling your kicks and punches somewhat. I see that with fighters that train with bags and dummies and don't punch/kick through the target, which would get you more power. I think with more power that fight would have lasted one round less, with you the winner. Good fight.
Yeah that's what I noticed also, that he wasn't punching or kicking with full power, except in the second round, he finally started getting a little pissed off and started hitting harder which is what won him the fight. With a good MMA coach, he could definitely become much better as he has otherwise good fundamentals. The only other thing he needs is better head movement and he needs to use his elbows as he missed a lot of great opportunities for elbow hits as well as swinging back-fists. But he's got a good chin on him and stayed very calm until he let loose hard in the second round. The other fighter wasn't bad, but he dumped a lot of energy in that first round and should have tried to pace himself. He also needs to work on how to get out of a rear naked choke. If he had dropped down, he would have removed some of the pressure. He also possibly could have flipped Xiao Long over his shoulder landing hard on him. That might have been enough to get him to loosen his grip. Aside from that he just needs to work more on his cardio and grappling in general. But overall, not a bad fight by some amateur strikers. It surprised me that it ended in a rear naked choke.
a good thing to point out is that putting more power into your shots also gasses you out quicker and can leave you in a worse position if you lose control/balance. And these guys also don't want to risk damaging either their opponent or themselves too much for such a low stakes fight. Less people will want to fight you as well if you absolutely brutalize your opponent with zero regard and you may attract more of the types that would do the same to you. If someone can win a fight with continuous good controlled technique over brute force, that's a real sign of skill, though then again that may mean it is a poor matchup to some degree.
Covington. Agreed. I saw that he was pulling, and not trying to put his bones through his opponent. It made me think that he is a nicer human inside, and fights to validate the technique instead of destroy the opponent. ... Xiao Long, respect to you, Sir. Thank you.

Xiao Long has really got something special going on with his Wing Tsun/Teakwondo hybrid style. @@homelessman3483 He actually does a great job with his Wing Tsun in that fight, he was just really inexperienced with taking hits (he seems to be a rapidly improving newbie). While it IS true that Wing Tsun can barely hold a candle to modern American boxing in the striking department, there has been an increasing amount of fighters online who have demonstrated that it, as whole, it is a lot more effective as a martial art then we all thought. Really, Wing Tsun is a really old, niche self-defense style that has gotten "Mcdojo'd" over the years both in China and America. Now that people are making it a point to actualyl spar and do resistance training again and combine it with other styles (much like Boxing has to be combined with Jujitsu and Taekwondo in order to survive MMA bouts). People are showing that Wing Tsun has some real application here
The ability to recover after a hit was impressive by Xiao, because how open he was sometimes i was thinking sheesh one good hit an he might go night night 😴 but he remained calm everytime an got back to his position 🫡

Some might say it takes away from his ability as a fighter, but I say it adds to his character. You don't fight every day, but you're a human being 24/7.
They could go have a few beers after and trade notes about how each can become a better fighter for their next opponent instead of one going to the hospital, so that's a win-win in my books.

its fun to watch, pro fights require too much thinking
@@acts9835 Most pro fights are 2 guys trying not to lose instead of aggressively trying to win. Modern pro MMA and boxing unfortunately has devolved a lot to where it is more about fame than having a passion of fighting. We see this with how fighters and their management meticulously try to get only matchups with favorable opponents, and if faced with a big fight with a tough opponent then they try to promote as much as possible for a big paycheck in case they lose they will still come away with big cash. From a business perspective this is all good, but from a fan's perspective all this media promo shit is tiresome. I just prefer fighters who fight because it is what they love.

there was 4 times i saw that he could have ended, but it seems like he just chose not to or didnt know how.

Very respectful as martial artists should be.
most of those early UFC fighters were obese and gassed out after 30 seconds lol
Why I generally preferred K1 to UFC. I wouldn't have gone so far as to call the latter, "Two guys rolling around on the mat," but it was close. Much prefer a stand-up fight.
@@Peatingtune Yeah, but most K-1 fights I've seen were between guys who both had Dutch kickboxing styles. This fight was interesting due to the style contrast, which I was hoping we'd see more of in early UFCs. There were some potentially interesting fights, but most ended up on the ground and neither fighter had grappling experience.
TO THE FIGHTERS:
Now that was a fight!

The Brawler did great for his skill level. He had some good shots and follow ups that at first XL did not anticipate (perhaps treating this as a warm up spar). Once the Brawler pushed the form harder, XL amplified himself as well and it was obvious that his conditioning is much more extensive and he is far more adapted to fighting/sparring especially in cardio and being use to taking body hardening shots.

idk where peanut lives or is from but i forgot i shouldve told you i literally grew up in Hburg where street beefs started, i was born and raised in that town, i lived in a few different houses but one was probably 5 min drive to the backyard whre the OG cage used to be, i had no idea it was even a thing happening there until i moved to New Jersy at like 25 lol and i saw this streetbeefs mma backyard fighting shit, i watched maybe 20 fights over course of few months until one day they mention Harrisonburg VA and i was like that is too odd of coincidence WTF and thats when i found out they all from my hometown lmao... but yeah im white and peanut white so just from being in that drug culture for large period of my life that area and white people are really only known for two drugs Heron and..... lets see if all the hints ive thrown out you can fill in blank 🤣
@@HIGH_noon you're a fucking champion. I can't speak to his personal consumption of things but I can say he really only microdoses shrooms and partakes in a bit too much Kratom lol. We bunk together so that's all I can say from personal experience
Xiao Long; if I understand correctly, his name can be translated as "humble dragon". "Xiao" means "small/little" which is a way Chinese people refer to themselves to display humility; "Long" means dragon. I'm grateful this noble dragon shows us that the traditional arts can work in the right hands, as I am personally most comfortable with these arts. Much respect to both fighters for their courage and skill that inspire us all.
Nope. Small literally means small. The only other way I've heard it used is as a term of endearment, like 'little timmy'.
@@DennisBLee Interesting; we have a different view on this, though. My years in (southern) China have shown otherwise. Especially within religious circles (where humility is expected). A Chinese friend of mine had also put it in her email address to refer to herself in a humble manner.
Likely a direct reference to Bruce Lee aka Lee Xiao Long
Or Li Xiao Long
It means "young dragon" in this context, it doesn't imply humbleness.
If the word 'xiao" (little or small) is combined with "de" (younger brother) and used by someone calling himself as one when he is speaking to another person who is not his blood brother then it implied humbleness.
One thing I noticed right away about Long, besides being extremely technical and precise is that most other Wing Chung Master lacks is that he actually has that natural raw talent of fighting period ....Long could of used Shotokan , ground and pound, or Muay Tai and would of been dominant

I like when he grabbed the brawlers leg, shoved his weight and shoulder and made him fall😂😂😂 i liked that
I have to say beyond a shadow of a doubt,by far the greatest representation of wing chun in combat I’ve ever witnessed .The discipline showed in the technique under the real test awesome.
Lol what? That was absolute garbage...
I know 10 year olds with better form and probably more power 2 haha

Im guessing no because noone who has actual experience thinks this is even remotely good.
Loved the respectful acknowledgment of his teacher at the end. Solid dude.
Nice! Bruce Leroy looks more and more relaxed each fight 👏
Both guys really put up a good fight with a lot of good sportsmanship. This is by far more interesting to watch than professional fights.
I love the respect these two had for each other ... that was a good fight I just saw 👍
one of the best kung fu guy that I ever seen. Respect
He had 0 power in any punches or kicks. If you're used to striking you can put your guard up and literally walk through those like nothing.
@@CleverTatic there is not power because the technique is shit.
I don't mean he should be focusing on power. I mean he should be using better techniques.
@@dmythica wing Chun is not shit it's moves are used in boxing by some of the greatest boxers, I think you're just speaking off of someone who had a shitty sifu.
@@wigon they didn't go over the rules in the vid but the way Peanut reacted makes me think elbows were not allowed in this match
@@varencilator Very good points you make.
Covington. Agreed. I saw that he was pulling, and not trying to put his bones through his opponent. It made me think that he is a nicer human inside, and fights to validate the technique instead of destroy the opponent. ... Xiao Long, respect to you, Sir. Thank you.
2:57 thought my boy was gonna go full Ip Man on him for a sec 🤣
Peanut was getting in there against a really crafty and unique opponent. Big respect to both. Xiao long is gna be the real deal if he keeps getting in real fight experience
Xiao Long has really got something special going on with his Wing Tsun/Teakwondo hybrid style. If he can get his Wing Tsun striking ability anywhere near his Teakwondo/Wing Tsun grappling abilities (Yup, all those clinches and takedowns were Wing Tsun, just much rarer techniques) he could be unstoppable in the yard
It’s such a nice change of pace to see wing chun being pressure tested and actually working
Respect to both guys for bringing it. People can talk tough behind their keyboards but these guys are doing it. I think the Wing Chun guy had lots of opportunities to do damage but he used humility instead, fair play. When he took the other guy down with a sweep he could have caved in his face but he held back. Nice.
The only part that I didn't get was why the brawler reached for the cage while he was being rear choked. But it's easy to be critical when I'm not the one in there.
It's nice to see someone with Wing Chun skills! Wing Chun Rocks! I'm a practitioner myself.
My condolences. 😂
Damn bro 😂
