Jason Halbert (on the piano) has been with Kelly since her start and it's also worth mentioning that this particular song is very emotional for her every time she sings it. Jason is so good at keeping up with every emotion she seems to go through, even when she has to stop tears. It's amazing to see the two of them perform together.
I think it’s fascinating looking at how Kelly’s voice has changed over the years! I personally love the raspiness she had around 2012-2014. She still had a great technique otherwise and was throwing out supported G5s like crazy. And now presently, she’s a lot better at using her stellar technique to choose when she wants some vocal distortion and when to make it crystal clear. She’s in another prime right now, supporting super high belts like G5 again 10 years later. Kelly singing her song “Cry” on her show recently was just outstanding. Speaking of crying lol, I think, potentially, Kelly’s voice breaking and struggling a bit near the end of this performance is just bc she almost always gets super emotional singing this song. It tends to happen with Because of You, specifically, and a number of others. She really doesn’t struggle much otherwise, usually
Keep in mind this is a VERY personal song to her mother. It’s like how “Piece by Piece” is for her father. It’s her song it’s hard to say how it’s not on pitch.
Funny enough whilst those parts pointed out were obviously noticeably pitchy it did not bother me as much mainly because the lines and parts of the song were kind enough to allow that pitch imperfections not to diminish the song. It was a low part of the emotional state of the lyrics and arrangment resulting in an emotional shakiness to maybe even if it can be said "enhance" the emotional content of the song artistically. In the hands of a master pitch imperfections can be artistically enhancing as opposed to an amateur or mediocre performer.
While the pitch imperfections were noticeable, they didn't detract from the song for me either. The emotional depth and arrangement allowed those imperfections to add an element of rawness and vulnerability. In the hands of a skilled performer, these imperfections can indeed enhance the emotional content, adding a unique artistic touch that wouldn't be possible with a perfectly polished performance.
What a great teacher you are. Your open honesty with a kind heart is so refreshing.❤🎶👂🏼 If you don’t tell us and teach us, how will we ever learn so thank you so much for these videos. 🏔️⛷️
Are you serious???!!! You are doing an analysis of a 12year old live performance???Her voice has evolved and matured and is now out of the stratosphear!!! One of the greatest if not THE greatest out there right now! And I am not referring to range only, whistle notes and all that. Many have range so does Kelly. I am talking about range and emotion and texture and just suberb quality! You say in a comment that you did this because you prefer live performances. My God man...she does a cover of a song every day on her show. She has covered close to 1000 songs live. And I am not talking any little song. She has covered Whitney and Aritha and the Righteous brothers and Aerosmith to name just a few! Kellyokee on the Kelly Clarkson show...
Thank you for your passionate comment! I appreciate your dedication to Kelly Clarkson and her incredible vocal journey. Regardless of the age of the recording, I approach each analysis as an opportunity to learn and gain insights. Live performances, new or old, offer valuable lessons about an artist's technique, emotional delivery, and stylistic evolution. Kelly's vast repertoire, including her stunning covers on the Kelly Clarkson Show, is a testament to her versatility and talent, and analysing different stages of her career only enhances my admiration for her artistry.
The way she sings here is pretty consistent with other 2012 performances besides breath management because thats only true for because of you performances and other songs like that. Despite how it may sound 2012 proved to be a more sustainable year as she was able to last tours without getting tired unlike a year like 2015 where she had to cancel shows for vocal rest. She does change her technique pretty often but may still have some of these habbits. 2024 seems to be going well for her 🤷♂️
What a great in-depth video! It was very interesting to hear your honest analysis of the performance. It would be very interesting if you could compare this to a more recent (at Radio 2 House Music in 2020) or an earlier (Grammys 2006) performance of the song. Kelly's recent performance of her song "Cry" on her show is a fan favourite which is also worth checking out. Also, some of the fans on here really need to calm down. It's not that deep, guys.
Just letting you know, I'm subscribed to your channel but this DID NOT come up in the subscriptions listing of recent videos (Contrary to all your other ones)
Take a look at a more recent vid - her voice has grown leaps and bounds since then as you have said. I’d love to hear your analysis of a recent vid. I appreciate your vids !
So many to choose from she covers a song everyday in her talk show live. Literally 500+ kellyoke to choose from. I know you won’t is old but amazing. More recent Christmas album or Chemistry album. I that album lighthouse and magic are good choices. So much to choose from that is recent and live performances
She’s so much better today. She is in her prime right now- try another video with a current performance, please

Interesting. Not sure why that is.
It happened to me too. I am subscribed and only found this one 3 weeks later whilst browsing UA-cam. I call this one "the one that got away".
Why did you pick such an old sample
I look for 'live' recordings that offer the opportunity for education and learning.
Take a look at a more recent vid - her voice has grown leaps and bounds since then as you have said. I’d love to hear your analysis of a recent vid. I appreciate your vids !
Would love to analyse a more recent live performance. Can you recommend any?

Kelly was NOT pitchy. This is why I hate vocal coaches. They don't know anything. Kelly is always great.
