I have the i5-12400 and absolutely love it. I also have the n100 in a Trigkey NUC which I also strongly recommend. Given those two CPUs, I can’t see any reason to buy anything weaker such as the i3-12100 or 300

it's probably the chips that didn't make it to i3 in qc and intel cut the cores and rebranded them as 300. they are useless but hey, even if they sell a few for office machines, it's better than scraping them.

this cpu can be used in home/office because it has igpu and cheap, if you buy 12100f you also need to buy gpu too, which is not good for home/office users because of the price.

So basically what they mean is that they killed off Celeron and Pentium so that people who have no idea what a computer is can easily tell that this and that CPU is better or worse.
It does make sense because someone who knows what a Pentium is these days will also know enough to get a cheap i3 or Ryzen 3 instead.

To tell the truth, Pentium and Celeron got pretty bad reputation in last ... decade 😁 Also, these CPUs are not really intended for home users. More for cheap office machines sold in bulk.

I have a 4790 and get 10% to 15% better fps in games like red dead compared to the 300
I doubt it, and you can pick up the i7 for far less on eBay if you're really wanting bottom of the barrel gaming.
In Elden Ring you should go through that big gate, the Stormhill area right up there is one of the most CPU intensive parts of the game.
As far as I could tell Leyndell is the most intensive

It is DoA here in Poland. It literally costs 10$ more than i3 12100f and 10$ less than igpu variant. While it is impressive for what it is, it's way too expensive to make any sense. There's just no reason to buy it.

In Australia the i3 12100f is $139aud, the i3 13100f is $159aud, and the intel 300 is $175aud. The regular i3 12100 is $179aud
It is literal manufactured e-waste tbh. No one should buy it at any price point. Even for low power and HTPC solutions, you're better off buying an older AMD or Intel processor and limiting the TDP on those instead. Save the planet a bit of trash

Never ceases to amaze me that these companies know how to mass-produce incredibly powerful microscopic machines with billions of transistors but can't figure out a good naming scheme. AMD's Ryzen just ripped off Intel's Core i-series naming schemes, but now Intel has come up with... this...

AMD didn't rip intel off. They wanted to keep it simple because the majority of people in this community aren't as techie as you might think. They buy pre built machines instead of saving and doing it themselves and miss out on everything else that comes with building a PC. Sorry im falling asleep as i type too tired to give anymore examples lol.

@@awrightmate5818 I disagree. This industry doesn't need to be even more convoluted. AMD did the same thing with their GPU tier, and it works out really well.
And with that being said, Ryzen absolutely has a VERY strong identity. Them using a similar number scheme as the competition doesn't change that. The product itself should be solid enough (*which it is/especially was when they first came out and were the ONLY logical choice for someone building a computer without a lot of cash) to warrant it identity. Not the name of the product.

I actually think it's a really cool CPU, I find efficiency and temperature much more interesting over raw power these days, that's why I returned my 5700x and got a 5600.
But the 300 kinda sucks since it's the exact same price as the 13100, which has a much better $ per frame and watt. This thing should really be half the price, maybe ~$60 USD.
You couldve just limited the power of the 5700X to match the 5600 if it was that much of a concern.

@@t1e6x12 Not really much of a reason to, at the time it was like $40 more expensive and only got ~3fps more in benchmarks, that means I was paying $13 a frame more, idk why anyone would do that.
The better temps and lower wattage was just a benefit at that point.

Yeah that cpu is a special breed of horrible. And considering that at the same price point often old Ryzen 3/5 5xxxer CPUs are found in similar laptops. Just insane
So about half the performance at 8 times less TDP (6w vs 46w). This intel 300 just looks worse and worse every single time I look.
@@Igbf well Intel tdp number are not usefull for anything besides maybe compare to other intel CPUs. Intel N100 boost tdp (the one that is actually used under load) is 25W. The Intel 300 seems to actually have a 46W boost tdp tho i could find further data on that. Your point still stands tho. Btw the Ryzen 9 6900hs 8c/16t in my laptop does 7500 multi points on R23 with an actual power draw of 13W in comparison. 13000 points at 40W. Pretty bad intel.
@@ratlingzombie8705 It's terrible if you only look at performance. In terms of power usage, it's surprisingly good. For things like a home server or a NAS. Or, I guess, even as a basic computer to use the browser and the office suite, it should be acceptable there too.
@@ratlingzombie8705I don't think it's fair to compare a Ryzen 9 6900HS, a high performance laptop chip, against what's supposed to be a very cheap, basic desktop chip for just making a basic computer run. The cost between those are going to be pretty different.

I'm IT Tech in our workspace, and yes. This deployed to our workbench for POS Systems.
Well, I saw most users said this processor are too meaningless for giving that current name, and also said nobody would want to buy Intel anymore and switched to AMD instead.
But for our normal thoughts, it's still OK for using home and office uses, nobody would give them a damn. Intel Processor 300 wasn't bad at all and it's pretty tricky for playing games quite smoothly. I don't think those fanboys telling them to buy AMD are great idea, this is only let PC communities way more worse than before.

My first gaming pc was using a pentium back in 2012. As a 13yo, it was crazy fun for that amount of money. I've never had any console games since ps1 and it was a blast. Spent countless hours on all Ezio's Assassin's Creed, NFSU2 and MW, COD MW series, and some locally popular online games. Served me until 2017 when i bought a used i5 on the same platform for $60 and that was even more fun. Hundreds of hours of Borderlands 2 coop with my brother and his friend, skyrim, witcher 3, AC Black Flag, GTA4 and 5, and a lot other. Budget gaming is great, giving good times for people with tight pocket.

One core goes to Windows 11's background services, while the second one goes to the antivirus.
For many things even a single-core would be more than enough. People nowadays are just too stupid.
Seriously, the Pentium 4 was not all that fast and a single-core CPU at that. Guess what people did back then? Right. Run their favourite game, teamspeak, 1-2 chat-programs, the browser and music all at once.
For simple web-browsing and office work even those ancient machines are still fine - letalone new CPUs that not only clock higher but also are vastly more performant at the same clockrate.

Nice... I rarely build a low end PC nowadays but your review is great. Your review can be another input for my data against people who prefer older generation processors such as 1st, 2nd or 3rd gen Intel which unfortunately are often overpriced here.
Intel should've gone with a naming scheme everyone would recognize:
XX050 for Celeron
XX070 for Pentium
XX100-300 for Core i3
XX400-600 for Core i5
XX700-800 for Core i7
and XX9XX for Core i9

I have an Athlon 200GE as my every day PC, I do all my internetting like watching RGinHD, emails etc or playing background music while doing other stuff & even being able to play a lot of my Retro Games I get from GOG using the IGP.
I got a 2nd Athlon 200GE for $30AUD not long ago so I can have some fun benchmarking IGP vs GPUs & OCing it on my AM4 Testbench 🙃👎

I guess one upside of this would be it's a cheap upgrade path to LGA1700 getting people on the platform and then able to upgrade down the line is probably very appealing to Intel long term.
It's honestly a pretty impressive CPU for it being a dual core. I wouldn't mind seeing it compared to an older high end CPU. Like an AMD FX 8-core CPU.

Back in the day, everyone said 4c8t i7s were overkills for gaming, as the games only used the 4 cores and didn't benefit from hyperthreading. If I remember correctly, some folks said to turn off hyperthreading as they could OC the cores faster without it. I'm curious how an older 4c i7 fares today with hyperthreading on vs off (overclocked and not)
HT performs better because modern software can use 8 threads and even more.

I can only see maybe limited usage in specialist embedded systems for this thing, or perhaps as a headless workstation. It just seems to be a solution looking for a problem at this point.

Another great vid Steve! IMO if Intel insists on keeping on making low level stuff like this, I think they should make their weakest CPU's be 4c/4t at least even if there is no turbo on the chip. Specially these Pentiums or numerically named new chips they push out on us. For the price they sell it at it would only make sense to manufacture at least a 4c chip. They are at this stage just killing their own market value with low budget level products

On the Intel side more L1,L2, and L3 cache and memory bandwith can go up to 76.8GB/s on default (no OC).

YES!! I’ve been waiting for someone to see how well this sort of super low end hardware copes with gaming at 4K. I paired an i5 11400f with a 3080Ti and it’s a perfect match for 4K gaming at high fps.
Is it the best dual core though? I mean it could be, but how would the last dual core I3 stack up against it?
Based on the frametimes in some of those games, it occurred to me that this chip, paired with a 4080-4090, would play 4K pretty well so long as the game engine wasn't using more than 2 cores and the Windows install was barebones.
I guess it's mostly a CPU for prebuilds, especially business ones, where they want to limit their viability after they get replaced... so I'm not a huge fan of it.
Just looking at the CPU itself from a technical perspective, I'd see more sense in having the entry level made up of CPUs with low power consumption... but of course intel is gonna charge extra for those.
As far as branding goes, I can sort-of understand it. While us viewing this channel know more or less what a Pentium G4560 or G6700 is, many people associate them with the old Pentium 4s, making it fairly hard to sell used PCs with Pentium CPUs.

@@AntiGrieferGames Thing is... even the N305 already boosts to 3.8GHz. I also didn't specifically mention gaming, even though it will be better than a 2C/4T chip. For a lot of stuff it would be better.

I still have an Pentuim G5600 at 3.92 ghz paired with 24 gb 2400 and a 1660Ti and it runs most games perfectly fine :D

the last time I used a dual core for my main rig was an i3 7100 with a RX 460 4gb back in 2019 now Ive got a Ryzen 5 5600 and a 4070.

The naming of this cpu line up, doesn't really make sense. They would be better of to continue using the Pentium name or the Core 2 300 or the Core 2 Pentium, even bringing back the doomed Itanium name would have a better marketing name comnpared to this...
Nah, intel won't go back to the Core 2 name. Remember (or not, depending on how old you are) there was a Pentium 3, then came the Pentium 4 and used way more power but was slower at the same clock speed than a Pentium 3 (the Netburst architecture sucked ba**s in hell). For the mobile Pentiums, intel further developed the Pentium 3 into the Pentium M and this architecture later was further developed into the Core and Core 2 architecture, before this then evolved into the Core i series.
Interestingly enough, it's an X337R batch, notoriously known for being the top of the top silicon of the 14900K/KF. Makes you wonder what could have happened during manufacturing to end up as this e-waste with 2c4t.. I wish it could be overclocked in a board with external clockgen like the 12th could, make it zoom to the best of its abilities. 😂

What would be really cool is if they released something like the Core i3 N300 series again, but without the same nonsense artificial limitations that locked the N300 to the NAS market.

For that price you can buy a 14 core Xeon E5-2680 v4, motherboard, and two sticks of 16GB RAM. That's an eight year old chip, sure, but it gets almost three times the performance in benchmarks and has way more cache, and you've got a new motherboard and RAM with it as well. The only thing the 300 has going for it is vaguely reasonable single thread performance. If you wanted something with a more comparable TDP then you could buy a 2620 and they are under five quid and still smack down on this pointless Intel Processor 300 SKU.

Thanks for a great review of a part others find not worthy of review. For average use, such as web browsing, youtube watching, e-mail, word processing this is a fantastic chip. If only there was a cheap 60 dollar motherboard to pair it with, it could make for an ultra cheap utility build. I am an avid gamer interested in this CPU. I mostly play chess 😆😆
All I want is a intel/Ryzen laptop based CPU ala Ryzen 5 5500u/intel i7 6600u 45w or less version in a desktop socket. Imagine an ultra low power consumption CPU with 12/16 threads and capable of driving 4060 to 4070 and below video cards. All I want this thing to do is max settings 1080 and 60fps vsync on or more(most tvs are 60hz), and do everything else decently.

@@spencerwaters5962 What I am proposing really is a minisforum in a normal ATX/MicroATX form factor, with the option to use full PCI Express x16 slot for full length video cards. With the option to overvolt the CPU to get more performance to run your video card. Essentially, you don't have to use a USBc external video card.

They absolutely do. Especially for a DIY NAS / Torrent / Plex box....
Might need more if you're transcoding to several TV's. But most have direct play these days...
But other than that, my 7th Gen i3 (most likely worse than this!!) is still running our home NAS nice and decent.

It would be good, if it sold for $35. But it's competing with older-generation chips that, for the same money, will run rings around it, such as an i7-7700. Fine video, by the way.
when you said that 2 core don't have any place in 2024 well back in 2013 i pick up a g645 along with a gtx650 1gb was good but at that time i wanted to play far cry 4 and after i have realized that it need a 4 core cpu was quite odd but mods come along and then thing was good but yes 2 core for 2024 even for light editting is quite a chalenge and a game of patience experience

As you said, it is the exact same £80 price as the i3-12100F (4C/8T 4.3 GHz), so the 300 (2C/4T 3.9 GHz) is redundant (at retail, at least).

My old laptop has a 6gb 1060 and an i5-6300hq and it games just fine even with some of today's games. I use it mainly for Xbox cloud gaming and a bit of light gaming whilst I use my 3070/i9 laptop for the AAA gaming 4k experience.
