The Greatest Kentucky Derby races I've watched were.....the Greatest Horse ever Secretariat, and a close second the 11th Triple Crown winner Affirmed, I was at that 1978 race in Louisville. Both were fabulous races. As far as the odds I guess it made the Greatest win, with the Rich Strike win at 80 - 1 payout a Cha Ching Bata Bing race! Saturday May 6th 2023, 149th running of the Kentucky Derby, I loved watching Mage# 8 as he made that from behind the track move. Secretariat's weakness was that he couldn't run on grass. It's like calling the Major League Champions the World Champions. In England Secretariat would have been little more than a Selling Player.

When his head goes straight , it’s awesome!!! The horses name, personality/character, couldn't be any more fitting than those 2 final furlongs where he saw daylight, and decided to 'flip the switch'. A perfect blend of blue collar personnel, including the owner, leaves an indelible mark on the sport of horse racing.

Secretariat hands-down, the greatest Kentucky Derby winner ever, and possibly in the most spectacular style. But when you consider the background of Rich Strike, picked up for $30,000 at a claiming race as a two-year-old when the average price of a Derby contender is almost 15x that, only ran in the Derby because of a scratch the day before, the trainer had never had a horse in the Kentucky Derby before, the jockey had never ridden in the Kentucky Derby before had never won a graded stakes race before, a totally unremarkable race record that made him such a long shot, who still didn’t seem to be anywhere in the race coming out of the last corner and still had to weave his way through horses to be fully unleashed, whose appearance at the front was so unexpected while everybody was focused on the “two best” horses in the field battling it out that the announcer didn’t even come up with his name until he took the lead at the end… definitely one of the greatest wins at least
Ferdinand's win was WAY better. The elderly Bill Shoemaker guided that horse up there so smoothly the announcer was stunned to see him suddenly there and winning the race. And he did it long before this race was run.
He was added after the horse Ethereal Road was out of the Kentucky derby. I remember the announcement of the horses when the announcer said,when it came to rich strike, the last-minute replacement, he said oh this horse doesn't matter he was just added. Amazing race for this average athlete horse. 👍
Won $400 bucks on that horse putting a $5 bet on him for shits and giggles. When I placed the bet he literally had 99-1 odds and it made me giggle. No idea what the odds were at gates but he’s still my favorite derby winner for it

How tremendously thrilling this was!! I’ve been following Rich Strike’s career since. This win was one of his very few ever. Which is so puzzling, since he obviously had the ability for great running. As of Late Autumn 2023, he was going to be Retired, but OWNER changed his mind. What’s happened since then is a mystery to me, since there’s basically no updates on the web. FRUSTRATING! I so hope that Richie is healthy, very well-cared for & enjoying his life ❤

We did a bet at work, putting $5 in the pot each. Drew the horses number on a paper. I was off when they drew, with me ending up with the long shot. I didn't know it was my horse till a co-worker texted, "you lucky witch!" Of course I got the meanest horse on the track. Too bad he didn't win the triple crown.

I wouldn’t call this the greatest Kentucky derby ever. That would be the 1973 Kentucky Derby when Sham on course to set a Kentucky Derby track record that would have still stood today was passed late in the race by Secretariat to beat Sham by 2 lengths. This was the greatest KD ever not only was Sham an incredible horse but because Secrtariat broke late at the start, was dead last at the first turn, turned on his jets and blew all the other horses off the track except for Sham.
The biggest mistake I made was I didn't even realize he was running,mis was six of us an we all pick a horse we wanted in the derby one older lady was first she said I want number 21 an other lady that was betting with us said 21 not in the race so she chose number 20 an that cost us the trifecta
