- As an Autistic person, I find no greater fear than going to the hospital or dentist.
Hospitals have incredibly bright fluorescent lights, lots of contrast, lots of people, talking, shouting, noises, lots of smells from food/drink areas or smoking areas.
Plus you can’t have breaks, because you will not exit the room for fear of losing your place.
I’ve contributed towards some sensory improvement work at a hospital with a great team.
If you want to contribute to change
Email a hospital and offer your advice, they may be looking to do some improvement or may be open to being convinced they should.
Dentist office...and grocery stores. The lighting....and stuff. I really seriously wonder about myself.i was diagnosed with ADHD...I just really really relate to everything you share ...like I thought it was panic attack but it is actually when I get super overwhelmed emotionally, any very strong emotions ,even happy ones...I hate going to dentist...I think too much and get nauses
I had an experience at the dentist recently, because I am traumatized from a previous medical experience. I only trust younger staff, so when the hygienist came to get me and she was a bit older, I freaked out.
Can you give examples of some organizations that are helping make medical centres mote sensory inclusive?
Can you do a video on light sensitivity. Or what smells can be bothersome.
