12:35 the building is not the parliament ; it's the Presidential Secretarial Office. The parliament is in an island which is more beautiful and prestigious. To talk about the Presidential Secretarial Office you can see a video in UA-cam showing thousands and thousands of people storming into the building in the Aragalaya Movement which then president was chased away by the ordinary people of the country. It was a great example for an up-rising of the people in modern history of the world. Thanks for the informative video. Hope you'd enjoy the stay in the beautiful greenish country Sri Lanka.
Actually no. You were, arguably never a single country until a colonial power unified you under the British Crown. Until then, in what is now Sri Lanka, there were several independent kingdoms and foreign powers weilding their authority at any one time, until the British unified the island under one government. At the time European powers, begining with the Portuguese, gained colonies in Ceylon, there were the native kingdoms of Jaffna which was Hindu and Tamil-speaking, in the north, and the Sinhala-speaking, Buddhist kingdoms of Sitavaka and Kotte in the south. There were also several independent native kingdoms on different parts of the island at various times. Kandy was, originally, a dependency of the Kingdom of Kotte in the south. Kandy later became and remained independent with the help of the Portuguese and the Dutch. The Dutch eventually gained control of the entire island, except the Kingdom of Kandy. When the Kingdom of the Netherlands was conquered by France in the Napoleanic wars, the British siezed Dutch Ceylon and enterered into a treaty with the Kingdom of Kandy. By then the Kandyans had long run out of heirs to the throne and had been importing members of a southern Indian, Hindu royal family who had to learn Sinhala, act as Buddhists in public, and rule as kings of Kandy. These foreign kings were not popular with the Kandyans, for obvious reasons. The British exploited this weakness and deposed and banished the last King of Kandy back to India and entered into a treaty with the Kandyan Sinhala chiefs, reducing Kandy to a self-governing, British protectorate. When the Kandyan nobles rebelled against this arrangement, the British abolished the Kingdom of Kandy and annexed the territory as part of the Crown Colony of Ceylon. Thankfully for the Sri Lankans, the British never annexed Ceylon into their Empire of India. If that had happened, Sri Lanka would today, be a "union territory", or a state of India. For the first time in many centuries, if ever, that brought the entire island of Ceylon under one government, that being the British Crown. Thankfully for the Sri Lankans, the British never regard Ceylon as part of the Empire of India. That meant that while in India, the British monarch was known as Emperor (or Empress) of India, in Ceylon, the British monarch was known as King (or Queen).
@@Christian_Paul_nzyou've confused SL with India. Our country from north to south, first united in the 2nd century bc. Of course we were invade around 35 times. But everytime we held back and managed to regain our land. Even British could not get control of whole SL militarily. They tried twice and failed. Kandyan politicians launched a coup against the king and handed over the power to british, thus giving up the whole country
@@dilipaweeratunga the Kandyan chiefs rebelled against the king because he and the other three Nayak dynasty kings of Kandy were Indians. The Kandyans could not agree on a Sinhala successor to the throne, and so they kept importing Indians to rule over them. These were shameless people who were devoid of any patriotic pride. Why would the British want to conquer Ceylon by military means when it was, for them, like eating a piece of cake, taking over the island by other means? The British were way too smart, compared to your ancestors. Actually the British took over Ceylon because in the Napoleanic Wars, the Kingdom of the Netherlands had surrendered to France. In international law, that transferred sovereignty over Dutch Ceylon to France. The British knew that it would be a matter of time before France physically took over Ceylon. To prevent that happening, the British took the preemptive step of invading and occupying what was Dutch Ceylon. This was formalised by the Treaty of Amiens of 1802 by which Dutch Ceylon (namely Ceylon, except Kandy) passed from French sovereignty to British sovereignty. As soon as the British arrived, the Kandyan chiefs rebelled against their Indian king hoping to get British help to oust the king. The British gladly did so but did not allow the Kandyan chiefs to rule Kandy. The Indian king of Kandy was deported back to India and was granted a pension and a gun salute for him and his descendants. The Kandyan king's gun salute was abolised and his pension discontinued by Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the 1970s. Dilipa Weeratunga, please go back and learn a thing or two more of your own history. It is shameful to leave it to me to teach you, your own history.
@@Christian_Paul_nz I know my country's history and certainly don't want a random youtube typist to teach me. But you can always try and gain a little self value. I am not here to show off. I pointed out your false statement about our unification. similar to chinese history , even when SL under rule of many small kingdoms, our nation remained united. Again I am pointing out your mistake. We did not want british to unify our country. When it was first united, romans hadn't even been to britain yet. British tried twice under governor F North to invade Kandy but were annihilated. They could capture in the 3rd time but with the help of Court officials not by themselves. Same happened during the 1818 and 1848 rebellion. Only with help from traitors. I don't know what books you are referring if anything at all. But when someone corrects your mistake, be humble enough not to go clowning around it.
@@dilipaweeratunga the court officials you refer to were Kandyans who were disloyal to their own people. If the British were able to use non-military means to take over, why would they go to the trouble of fighting. They used traitors to defeat and conquer. The fact remains that Ceylon, in its entirety, became a British Crown colony. For the first time, your island was united, thanks to the Great British. There was no Kandy, no Sitavaka, no Kotte, no Anuradapura, no Dambadeniya and no Jaffna. These places became municipalities under a British Governor who lived in Queen's House. The highest peak on the island became "Pedro" instead of "Pidurutalagala". The old Parliament Building in Colombo was opened on 29 January 1930 by His Excellency Sir Herbert Stanley, GCMG, KStJ, the Governor of the Crown Colony of Ceylon. The Ceylon legislature prior to indepencence on 4 February, 1948 was known as the State Council. Upon independence, the Crown Colony of Ceylon became the Dominion of Ceylon, of which the head of state was His Majesty King George VI, King of Ceylon, who was succeeded, on his death in 1952, by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Ceylon. The Dominion of Ceylon became the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in 1972, when Queen Elizabeth was replaced as head of state, by President William Gopallawa, who was until then, Her Majesty's Governor-General in and over Ceylon. From 1948, executive power in Ceylon was vested, on a day-to-day basis on a prime minister, the first of whom was Don Stephen Senanayake.
