The matches we lost out on because of the stabbing. Graf was regaining her better form in 1993 and Seles was continuing to improve and add things to her game. It should’ve been one of the greatest rivalries in sport.
Not true she was starting to become a bulimic her movement was crap and she still had a losing record against Graf and I don't think that would have changed. Monica was a one-dimensional player which is why she couldn't recover from the stabbing because she didn't have a plan b. She was crappy at the net, her movement was terrible and her athleticism and conditioning sometimes embarrassing. I think she would have won more Grand slams but not more than Steffi.
Monica was far more emotional and internalized everything and I think her father dying would have had a huge impact on her tennis career. Hence the reason she became bulimic in all of those things.
That is a myth, Seles was not improving. Here are the facts: 1) In the 12 months before the April 1993 stabbing Seles had a 92.06 winning percentage. But in the 12 months before than (May 1991 to April 1992) she had a 93.83 winning percentage. 2) In the first four months of 1993 until the stabbing (Hamburg tournament not included) Seles was 15-1 win/loss with 30-6 in sets. But in the first four months of 1992 she had been 27-1 win/loss with 54-4 in sets. It was a slight downwards trend and certainly in no way "improving so much". Improving massively was Steffi Graf from 1991 to 1993, not Seles. Steffi would have overtaken Seles in the rankings in 1993 anyway. Steffi went 80-2 win/loss from May 1993 to April 1994 - Seles never had such a streak in her whole career.
This match along with the 1992 french open finals and the 1995 us open finals are the best matches they played. Very high quality. We could have got more of these if not for April 30 1993
Been watching tennis since Wimbledon 1992 and this match is one of my top 20 best matches ive ever watched. Classic Graf vs Seles. I still think their rivalry stands way above Martina vs Chris Evert, Serena vs Henin or Venus.
Graf is better in every measurable statistic and by some margin. Even in head to head battles its 10-5 Graf. 6-4 for Graf pre-stabbing and 4-1 for Graf post-stabbing
Seles didn't have great technique. Her serve was weird, and her two-handed forehand was not ideal, but Seles proved that she could win with what she had. She was a great competitor.
This could have been an Evert/Navratilova type rivalry with Graf winning more on fast courts/grass and Seles more on slow courts/clay. At this stage of their rivalry the teenage Seles was 3-1 up on Graf in slam finals.
@Jardin-d8v I think the surface had a lot to do with this....Seles never beat Graf on a fast court....she simply wasn't fast enough and couldn't deal with Graf's slice or offensive game.
@@toms9864nope, AUS & US open was played on two different surface at that time. Us open surface was way faster than rebound ace surface of A.O which was slower than even clay of F.O for some. Even in 1999 A.O a past prime Seles beat a past prime Graf but Seles never able to beat her in US open.
... Like Martina who is the G.O.T. (God/ Goddess) of Tennis --- which is one-notch superior than G.O.A.T. --- with an unparalled career and unrivalled records, Monica is in a class of her own. ... Because many pundits speculated, rightfully, that Monica could have easily raked in more than twenty Grand Slams, and those are for singles, and more if she played doubles, or like Martina, mixed doubles. And Olympic Golds to boot. ... But sports history had a different mind. Too bad, only Gabriela and Martina supported Monica to hold to her Number One ranking when the she was sidelined from a delusional German man's horrific stabbing. And Germany as a country, including its judicial sysem, chose Not to Rise to the occasion, either. (c) 2024 lee_kpQ. All Rights Reserved. For sure!
Security was so bad at that time, and the guy who stabbed her had no punishment
Gunther was erase the moments. If not, it could be the best rivalry in women tennis history

Monica was improving so much between 91 and 92 ... and 92 and 93... the peak was yet to come

Graf playing much better here than in the three GS she won in 93, Monica at her very best here. We shouldn’t have been robbed of this show 😢
The AO's slow ReboundAce surface was Steffi's worst and Seles's best surface.
Monica was 3-1 against Graf in slam finals by age of 19. Was improving her serve and her all court game..Graf 22 will forever have *
The Fedal of the WTA. Seles would’ve been the Queen of Clay imo if it wasn’t for the incident. For now Evert is still at the top
steffi graf my all time favourite player. she is different and quality of play amazing.

I’m still missing Monica.

The record books would have been different if Seles hadn’t been stabbed; we were robbed of what could have been.
Yeah the record book would have been different if Henin didn't retired due to burnout & Venus wouldn't had sjorgen syndrome.
Yes you are so right, there are no differences whatsoever in someone trying to murder you and having burnout
I could watch this match forever. Monica really put it to those rude fans.
Seles not even at her peak here - unreal for a teenager!
Seles is better than Graf
Based on what ??

Aren't the Australian Open and US Open on fast courts? Seles won 7 out of 9 Grand Slams. She was winning everything but Wimbledon.

YES please, 1989 final against Sukova
