One might ask how did curry end up in Vietnam. Isn't it a spice from India? Why yes, curry is a spice from India. As history is written, when the French settled in Vietnam, they also brought with them Asian Indians who saw an opportunity to trade and find employment. The French were introduced to curry spices through the British whom ask Asian Indian cooks to add more flavor to their bland proteins. That's how Asian Indian spices were introduced to French cuisine. This is just the short version!
Cà Ri Gà is a hearty but healthy dish to consume. Curry and turmeric powders have healing properties. It is said to boosts one's immune system, relieve arthritis pain, prevent Alzheimer, good for heart health, fight cancer and help with digestion.
This dish will take ten minutes to prepare fresh ingredients and a total time of 30-minutes to complete cooking. The process goes really fast and before you know it, it is ready to be served with some fresh hot baguettes! (Baguette recipe here: www.deanathai....)

I can sit down and just dip the french bread in this dish and be happy...so delicious. The vietnamese beef stew is awesome also.
Thanks! The beef stew is definitely delicious. However, this dish is a chicken curry. Equally delicious!
@@DeanaThai thanks and yes I know the difference...my favorite is the curry by far.
I'm torn! I could just make both and enjoy them all!
@@DeanaThai either dish will make for a great day.

Thank You!
I got to try this dish out tonight! The instructions on your video was awesome. Step by step and what to do vs. what not to do were extremely helpful. It was also helpful that you explain slowly so a slow person like me can grasp it easily. 😁. I like the fact that you have the recipe on your website so I was able to know what I need to get before I start.
The result was awesome! My family thought that it was EXCELLENT ...and they are very picky eaters if I have to add. Thank you, Chef Deanna! I may have to try some of your other recipes next time. Too bad I can’t post picture of the dish on UA-cam or I would do that so your followers can see...

@@DeanaThai Do you think its good to eat with noodles too or is it too thick?
@@jennifersherrick4247 It's still broth-y enough to eat with noodles! Tastes fantastic cause the noodles just soaks up all the flavor.
@@DeanaThai Yummy yummy ty. Love your channel!
why do i see other recipe using coconut water or juice along with coconut milk?
Do you ingredients to make bun bo hue?, I wanted to make this dish for my wife also because I wanted to learn how to cook vietnamese dish and get back to my into culture so someday I could pass down to my kids since both of my parents had pass way I have no one to teach me I'm wondering can you help me ?
Yup right here www.deanathai.com/post/instant-pot-bún-bò-huế
@@DeanaThai thank you
Deana
Can you make a video of how to do this on the instant pot ?
Will do! :-)
i did in the instant pot.. i just do everything she posted.. n i cook the chicken let it fried bout 2-3 min and flip to coat the chicken. then i put all the recipe n chicken to instant pot. i like my chicken fall off the bone.. like melt in my mouth. i just do it for 25 min.. you can adjust it cuz its already half cook.. if you dont want the chicken fall off the bone do it for 15 min..
Hi Deana! Can I sub coconut cream with milk? My bf dislike coconut cream.
You would need to use half and half or heavy cream. Milk will make it watery.
Also, note that the curry won't taste the same without the coconut cream.
@@DeanaThai made it tonight and used heavy cream...it was delicious 😋 👍 thanks for the recipe.
My pleasure! I'm glad the heavy cream worked out.
How many servings would this make?
Hello! It will make 8 servings. My family will eat it over two meals. But I have to make a new batch of bread for the second meal. 😊
anyone able to pull up the recipe on the website?
If you search "curry" it should pop up. Here's a direct link www.deanathai.com/post/cà-ri-gà-vietnamese-coconut-chicken-curry-southeast-asian-style
@@DeanaThai thank you soooo much!
My pleasure! Enjoy 😉
I tried making this tonight. I thought it was too sweet.
I'm sorry you thought so. Maybe reduce sugar to a quarter cup instead of the half. The fish sauce can be super salty so the sugar helps balance it out. But then the coconut milk/ cream can also add a natural sweetness to the overall flavor too.
be careful on every recipe you cook because all spices are dependent on your taste buds. she did a great job and I appreciate that she did it in english as well. I can't wait to cook it for my husband to taste but I will taste before I add to much sugar for my liking as well. I usually only add 1 or maybe 2 tablespoons of sugar if any because otherwise I could die.
How long to cook this curry?
Approximately 40-45-minutes total from start to finish if you follow my steps. That includes chopping and cooking time.
coconut cream ? not coconut “milk”. -because isn’t cream sweet
Either is fine. Coconut cream isn't sweet at all. I prefer cream but you you can use milk. Cream from can will thicken broth!
