I purchased my polar Express set last month. This was my way to get back in the trains after a 25 year absence. Now it's running around the Christmas tree on an expansion pack that does a double loop around the tree. I just enjoy it so much.
You’ve expertly blended a tutorial kind of video with a LOT more great insight all bundled with fantastic low-light footage that really brings all the magic of these lighted features out. Front to back what a wonderful video!
Thank you my friend! Traditional sets are often misunderstood at the enthusiast level, and yet, Traditional Sized O-Gauge Trains continue to be the best sellers. Plus they often find their way into the hands of the next generation of model railroaders which is more important than most seem to understand. :)
My 3 year old son loves the Polar Express and model trains in general. We both enjoy watching your videos. Just found myself watching your videos by myself.... Guess I'm a train nerd now too! Thanks!
You can never have enough of Polar Express. We did a whistle battle between all 3 versions at our local train store and I thought of you when we were doing it. The winner was everyone at the store smiling and giggling like kids as we played with our trains :)
@@RBPTrains It is a fantastic place to play around - if you are ever near Mountain Lakes NJ, I suggest you check the store out; it's located appropriately behind a train station lol!
Can’t wait it’s wrapped and under the tree! Took my son to the Lionel store last weekend and he kept saying he wished we could get it to run on our layout. he didn’t know it was already on order and still hasn’t noticed the extra gift under the tree lol. Thanks for your videos!
When I was a kid, my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all went to see this movie in theater together. That same year, I opened this set on Christmas morning with the additional baggage car and hot chocolate cafe car. Where does the time go? Merry Christmas to you and your family, Chris!
Thanks, RBP, for sharing the 20th Anniversary version of the Polar Express. I'm normally an "HO"er, but back in 2014, I purchased the original (?) Express to run "around the 🎄tree." At the time I was music teacher at an elementary school, and I saw they were putting up giant mockups of the Polar Express coaches in the hallways between the classrooms of the K-3 (kindergarten to third grade) kids. In each "window" was a photo of each kid! I said to myself, "It's now or never!" I put the tracks around the 🎄tree at the end of the hallway and ran the Express! Everyone ❤Loved❤ it, especially the eyes of the little 5, 6, 7, and 8 year olds. The teachers were very good at keeping the kids away from the train, but if I was around, I'd invite them to "blow the whistle" on the transformer. This was (still is) an inter-city school where students don't see many model trains. When parents are purchasing 🎁 gifts for their children they are probably thinking more about tech toys than "old fashioned trains." I'd like to think I opened up the minds of some of these youngsters to the wonderful world of model trains! I ran this set (minus the obs) at the Great Midwest Train Show last Sunday (12-01-24) and have posted two videos of it here on UA-cam. Search "Great Passenger Trains of the 🎄Season". Thanks again RBP! Sincerely, Nathan in Chicago ❤️🚂🙂
@RBPTrains I certainly appreciate your comments RBP! Thank You very much! I am just very happy to expose others to our Great Hobby as you do! I ❤️ Love helping those who "still believe" and more importantly "those who don't!" Thanks again, Sincerely, Nathan
Thank you for the 20th anniversery polar express review. From the cataloge,I didn't know about the tender with the coal load. Now I think the coal looks good. Great review!!!
Very nice, Chris! The Polar Express is one of the few, seasonal trains, that I would consider purchasing. Unlike some of the other seasonal/holiday offerings, like the Halloween sets, it can be run at any time and will fit right in. It's cool that they come with the crew talk from the movie. It is so much nicer than the standard, generic Lionel crew talk. The whistle is a bit weak, but it doesn't take away from the visual presence of the whole train. The Lionchief Plus 2.0 Berk is gorgeous. The tender, which is an upgraded version of the post-war 2426W, is one of the best that Lionel ever produced. It was the tender that came with the original Berk and also with the 1950 773. Either way, you just can't beat big, lighted passenger trains, running around a layout in the dark. I like to feature my AMT passenger cars on my channel. My layout is a bit simpler than yours, but it allows for long trains, which can really showcase the bigger passenger trains. An excellent video, as always.
Nice video intro for the 20th Anniversary Lion Chief Polar Express set, Chris. It's really a great way to get into the hobby with an easy to run, accessory filled train set that's easy to set up and enjoy for the Holiday Season.
In your opinion, what's missing? I think that scale one is pretty perfect, aside from the front boiler plate. But even that is something I could overlook.
Sounds like you have a future in product development! There is much that can be done with this train to give it those extra details for the film and story for sure :).
This is another very well done video and an interesting unboxing. I am not a fan of that tender. I have three American Flyer Polar Express coaches but am not planning on taking them out of their boxes this year. I am tired of having to resoldier the wiring frequently. The Polar Express was the last movie I ever saw in a theatre with my parents. I was 54 then and they were both gone two years later. This video did give me an idea. In the last year I have been able to get a locomotive identical the the one in my first American Flyer set which I found under the Christmas tree in 1958. I already had the three car from that set. Now that I have my layout decorated for Christmas, I will run that train to commemorate receiving that first train 56 years ago.
Thank you for sharing @MarkWick. A special memory and I like that you were able to find the locomotive that reminds you of that special set from 1958. Vintage trains have the most magic of them all. Thanks for watching!
a special set like this I’d barely touch. I know it’s a starter set but an anniversary set I’d keep it in the box more often. Feels strange watching you setup a starter set Chris! Last year my dad and I put up a train display in our town local library. It was fun. Of course we locked it in the glass cabinet but still visible. I displayed my Legacy Lehigh Valley set, Acela Polar Express, traditional 2004 polar Express and and my dad’s trains from the 1950s. One of his is a rare set of the New York Central. On the side I left a small bio of me and my contact. A couple of the visitors contacted me and told me how much their kids love looking at them. Something about this felt magical. I emailed them back and sent them a couple links to starter sets that they might like. I would be happy to do it again
Well done Chris. I loved how you broke it all down clear and concise. Your execution and explanation of all of the differences was well thought out. Tom
Recently received my prairie freight set with the “new” tooled 675 prairie and love the postwar throwback look and feel that brings with modern electronics and control. Probably my favorite new release of the year across all the scales I model.
Hi Chris Another very interesting and informative video, your layout looks fantastic with the room lights dimmed . Thank you for also for making the information not too technical. All the best to you. Keith (Southampton UK)
Love watching any of your videos. I am really enjoying all the Christmas content so far and am looking forward to seeing what you have to offer for the rest of the year. My son already has 2 train sets, but I am thinking of getting the Thomas Christmas set for him.
I still have the original set from Lionel when the film was released 20 years ago. Received it Christmas Day 2004 when I was 10 years old. It has the locomotive with tender, 3 cars, the loop of FasTrack, wired transformer, mini-figures, and the only sound is just an air whistle. Model trains sure have came a long way since then with all the smartphone apps and Bluetooth wireless connections. I know I sound old, but I’m only 30! 😂 I still run the original set with my Lionel K4 freight set I received Christmas Day 2002 when I was 8 years old. My favorite set I have ever received for Christmas. Both are now the trains I run around my Christmas tree every Holiday season! However, I’m a BIG MTH DCS TIU guy. 😂
Hi Chris I love the polar express set it runs great. I do have a question for you about your crossing gates they look great are they mth or Lionel thanks bob.
Like watching your O-gauge campaign, amazing trains and your layout is awesome. I started with N-gauge at home and keep it that way, but watching O-gauge is nice as well!
Hey Chris of RBP Trains, 1st happy holidays to you and the family, 2nd love the 20th anniversary polar express totally sweet looking especially at night , 3rd You, Eric, and country bunker Trains are m6 favorite top 3 Lionel trains reviewers. Of course your # 1!!!
Been a G scale guy all my life, but I’m looking to get rid of all of my LGB locomotives and downsizing to O scale for the sake space this model caught my eye
Amazing review as always! IMO, the golden coal was a stupid idea. the best way to make this sit special would be to add more figurines, add more detail to the locomotive itself, or add a car with the hobo skiing on the train with hero boy. (Flippable like the previous hobocar) idk, I think lionel got lazy on this one.
That’s a cool set, I wasn’t aware of that one. I haven’t made up my mind on the look of the tender, it may be one of those things you need to see in person. Thanks for an informative look a a cool set.
I did not really notice this set in the catalog either. The tender is an odd one and it makes this set unique. I like the way the Polar Express lights up. Looking forward to your next video!
I've always been on the backfoot when it comes to these Lionel sets. the only one I picked up is the 2-8-2 Mikado for my Kit bash Polar Express using Bachmann's version and a bit of lionel's G scale Passenger coach (will modify it for Bachmann trucks).
I didn’t know that existed until after I bought a regular set. It’ll be circling around my living room of my apartment when it arrives. Hopefully the 20th anniversary will be in store in the future but I doubt it lol
As always, great job explaining the differences between the starter train set Locomotives and Lionchief + 2.0 and Legacy Locomotives for the newest train hobbyists and making it fun while doing it, again great job! 👍👍🫶🫶🚂🚂
One neat little easter egg of the LC+ Berk is the whistle sound on the Lionel Lines version is a recreation of an original postwar air whistle, right down to the motor/fan whine as it spools up and down. Recently acquired my first LC+ in the form of an NW-2 diesel switcher, and it's knocking my socks off with how good it is.
I have an earlier Lionchief Plus Pere Marquette 1223 from 2017 that uses the same casting as your Lionchief Plus 726. I like running it in front of the Polar Express cars.
Im a noobie to the train game but I love it. So much to learn. My wife bought me one because I told her my uncle had beautiful trains when I was younger and I loved them but his addiction got the best of him. She bought some little dignity train for me a few christmases ago and I have been doing research to upgrade and expand ever since. Kids getting older and now I will have a free room to play in lol. What christmas train is that with all the lights? That one looks amazing!
I feel like the small polar express and the scale one should do some fun things on the layout together :) maybe the small one could show the BIG one how to shunt :)
I LOVED the Polar Express as a kid. And still do to this day. I always wanted to do the "train around the tree" gimmick on Christmas, but my parents never got a train to do it with. So now that I have my own place, and make my own money, I would LOVE nothing less, than the best Polar Express model train, that I can get my hands on. That way I can finally start putting a train under MY tree, every year.
Love your videos, man. My kids and I will sit and just watch them on repeat sometimes just to enjoy your trains from afar. Please keep up the excellent work!! I’m getting back into model railroading after not doing it for 10 years. Sold off all my HO stock to help pay for our new house. Now we’re getting back into it since we have 5 kids who adore trains. We’re going O gauge this time around and are starting with the Lionel Winter Wonderland train. I’d like to make an 8x4 layout. Do you think that it’s possible to make a decent one on that little space with engines as big as O Gauge?
You'll be able to create a really fun layout with 8x4 as a starting point. Lionel makes track expansion packs for figure 8 and such. If you decide to get bigger engines, 8x4 will become a challenge as you will need the larger curved track sections. I would start with the 8x4 and see where it takes ya!
I was able to get the HO model of the Polar Express RBP! I’ve done it! Also will you be reviewing the 20th anniversary Polar Express updated Observation car? I believe in a previous video you said you had ordered one, but I wasn’t sure if you said you were planning on reviewing it or not.
Glad you got it! I will not be doing a dedicated review on the Observation car alone but we will see it running with the set after it shows up. Sounds like the new run of passenger cars won't arrive until January unfortunately. Thanks for watching!
I wanted to add a little info: The OG Polar Express Set, which I have, featured a regular O-Gauge Polar Express locomotive but with separately applied metal handrailing and a few other details. I believe Lionel made one similar for Lionchief about 10 years ago as a special edition loco with metal handrailing. And it does look like you can buy a separate LionChief 20th Anniversary Polar Express Loco with metal handrailing for $600.
Those details do make a big difference, especially on LC+ 2.0. I almost got the Polar Express 2.0 model but had to go for the Post War 726 throwback version
I purchased my polar Express set last month. This was my way to get back in the trains after a 25 year absence. Now it's running around the Christmas tree on an expansion pack that does a double loop around the tree. I just enjoy it so much.
Double loop sounds like a fun track plan!
@RBPTrains It really is. If I could upload a video to you with it running, would. I'm really not looking forward to taking it down after Christmas.
You’ve expertly blended a tutorial kind of video with a LOT more great insight all bundled with fantastic low-light footage that really brings all the magic of these lighted features out. Front to back what a wonderful video!

Sounds like you have a future in product development! There is much that can be done with this train to give it those extra details for the film and story for sure :).
@aj3751 the "scale" one is just pere Marquette 1225 with polar express on the tender, lionel never puts any effort into a good polar express.
@@doge_sevensWanna guess which engine they modeled the movie after?
@aj3751 yeah, but it's not a 1:1 replica? It uses the 1225 as a base but it's modified
That is so neat! I really like all the features they put into this and the phone app for controlling!
The voice recording feature was cracking me up. My favorite part of the app!

I agree, the whistle on the LC+ is a fun and clever detail. Was waiting to see how many folks noticed this. :)
Might have a small edge in having a lot of postwar in the fleet, including a 736 Berk, so I'd know that two-tone note and whine anywhere.
beautiful setup!

Love youre videos mate you never fale to impersive me
I appreciate that!
First there was yellow snow… now it’s yellow coal.. 😭
Yellow snow?
I would start with the 8x4 and see where it takes ya!
great train great rbp 😘
Will you ever do another episode of RBP and friends video submission video?
Nice Chris! I got it also!
Great video.
Love your vids
Just bought 3 starter sets 😂
Whats difference between the Santa fe starter set 157 and 159?
Love it! And I would have to research your question, lol
I used to watch the movie over and over again when I was younger. I am now 12.
I’m still pretty young
I don’t know how you recorded your voice from your LionChief app but it sure sounds great I will like to try it sometime in the future
I just used the voice recorder on the app. Made it really easy!
20 years ago, Warner Bros. changed Christmas forever. The Polar Express has come a LONG way in 2 decades.
Hey cool Video. I live in germany so i never have the experiens with lional i only have a ice 3 from piko in H0
