Done with a pixel art example but the tips in this animation tutorial will apply to all mediums.
You'll learn how to animate using the 12 principles of animation: staging, arcs, straight ahead/pose to pose, slow in and slow out, squash and stretch, anticipation, overlap/ follow through, exaggeration, timing, appeal, solid drawing, and secondary action.
You'll learn these principles by watching a simple bouncing ball example.
By the end of this animation tutorial, you'll be able to apply the 12 principles of animation to any type of animation you choose, from 2D animation, to pixel art / pixel animation, 3D animation, traditional animation, and clay animation / claymation.
These easy tips allow you to use these animation principles in game animation, art, cartoons, or anything you like!
The example shown was made in aseprite, but you can use any animation program, software, or method you want.
You can join the community on discord to get feedback on any animation you create whether you're a beginner or an expert, there are people who would love to help.
You can also share any animation tips you have in the comments, I'd love to read them!

Love ur videos !!!
Keep up the good work!! ♥️♥️
Your editing is so fun. Making silly visual is so helpful for us with ADHD, helps me get back on track if my attention is drifting from the lesson lol
I’m glad it can help :D I like having little things moving around too I think it helps me focus
THIS IS SO UNDERATED! as s person with ADHD that helps sooo much
@@saultoons Awww I feel very comfortable here, thanks Saul ❤️ I love your channel, the topics? Idknw how i traslate" temas" XD then, are too difficult for me😞, but it is easy to repeat your videos, they are also very well understand and they are so complete that it is not difficult to watch them over and over again, and if I also have ADHD too and I realized that paying attention to these issues with you is easy because of how you dedicate to that part, you can see the effort and love for your work ☺️ and also that I'm Mexican and I don't speak English that well XD You pronounce very well to understand you, no se traducir esto pero " apesar de " my level in the language 😂 other channels are like what he said?? because they speak very fast XD, really thank you very much
I've studied and taught animation for years and this is one of the best examples of the 12 principles I have seen. Great work and the very cute rabbit helps.
Thanks a lot!
I don't even do art, I'm just here cos I love the way you make videos lol
Haha glad you like em Donald! 😄
I'm a Korean!
Thanks to your video, I got to know animation better. Thank you!
Let's gooooo! Glad I could help, thanks for watching!
Just have a job in a pixel art studio, after years of practicing drawing alone and a few months digging into pixel art with your videos. Thank you and love you man.
Excellent work Giang, nice! :D Thanks for sharing
This man just explained, clearly and engagingly, in 8 minutes (probably 10-15 minutes of dialogue irl, and an hour or two of editing), what took approximately ~24 1-hour classes in college... That I failed. Twice. Life is frustrating in special ways...
And, also, the bunny excelled at its goal and distracted me from the fact that this is just the 'bouncing ball' and the 'flour sack' all over again. Gonna tack that under 'thanks'... **eye twitch**
Glad you found it useful! :) yeah there’s a lot of fluff in class I found, I always thought “just get to the point” when I was in them. So try to live by that when I teach something
Aah the classic bouncing ball n flour sack
Merged into ONE!!
Ur video editing skills are great 🤣🤣🤣
The kitty boss speaking Japanese killed me 🤣🤣🤣
hahah glad you enjoyed it! It takes so long :|
0:52 that man have super powers😂
You saw nothing 👀
Theses fundamentals are gold. thank you for this, +1 sub
No problemo, definitely check out the books mentioned that they're based off :)
I can't say this as much but your videos are super informative and extremely fun to watch! Keep up the good work!
Glad you like them Aliff thanks for watching 😄
Richard Williams 12 principles of animation and Frank and Ollies Illusion of life. Great books, no secrets involved:) Fun Fact: All three hated working for Disney.
Oh really? That’s interesting I wonder why? Though from my experience industry work is not all sunshine and rainbows 🤣
@@saultoons My animation professor told us that. He worked at Disney during the Tarzan/Mulan era as a clean up artist. I guess it was known within the studio that a lot of top Animation talent/ leads/ directors didn't care for the sweatshop atmosphere once you peek behind the curtain. Disney has always been a bit nefarious so it doesn't surprise me. Anyways, thanks for tutorials, learning more with every watch. Translating traditional animation to pixel animation isn't the easiest but the fundamentals are good to see translated to pixels.
@@hasan7786 Very interesting Hasan I bet that was a great experience! I'm glad my videos could help a little, the pixel part can be quite difficult but it's quite similar to 2D with a few tweaks so I'm sure you'll be fine. Thanks for leaving this bit of knowledge :D
@@saultoons No problem. Keep up the good work.
I know this video is a year old but I just started trying to make games and this has been unbelievably helpful. Thank you so much
You're very welcome! Good luck with your game making progress :D
Seriously…..you are just amazing. Your explanations are fun, precise and concise at the same time. I am really happy to found you. Thank you for adding so much value.
What a complement, thanks so much for the kind words
Dude, you nailed it, the animation looks so smooth
Thanks Yassin! :D
Excellent video. You made it really understandable to see how the different principles work. I was incredibly surprised at the examples of stretch in Overwatch. I never would have noticed (which is a compliment to the artists)
Thanks a lot!
You are the pixel wizard man!
loved the overwatch references :D
Overwatch is awesome!
Everything in this video is so well explained and the animation is great!!
Thanks a lot I’m glad you find it useful :)
Nice advices! I need to practice them! Thanks Saul!
No problem Reddmar! Hope it goes well :)
This channel was recommended to me. Now I love it❤️

Really, your videos are a joy to watch and are very helpful, thank you

Glad you like them! Thanks for subbing for 2 years! :o
A very well done video!
I've watched a couple of these tutorials (subbed by the way), and they're really good.
Thanks for watching the tutorials glad you enjoy them
Amazing and useful video, as always, thank you
Thanks Stefano, I'm glad it could help :D
Awesome video as always!! 👌
Thanks bro!!!!!!!!!!!
Great video to quickly do my animation home work of learning the principles right before class✨️✨️✨️
You got this haha
This channel is amazing!! You deserve more subs!
Thanks CrimsonCake we’re growing nicely! Soon we will be at the top 🤣
I'll have to make sure to do my characters' movement more fluidly. Great job on the video! I love the way you did the humor without taking away from the main purpose of the video!
Thanks Andrew, yeah I think it better complements the video without taking away from the purpose. Tried to learn from the feedback on past videos :o)
@@saultoons Yeah. You are getting and therefore deserve more subscribers... 😁
Eventually, I'd like to make a few minor games, before I really finish my main game... Any tips to improve overall quality?
Come and share your game on Discord, we'd love to give some feedback :D
I adore your rabbit animation, it's so cuuute! I've been watching your vids to learn better techniques to create a bouncy Kawaii s'more animation. It's been a lot of work, but a lot of fun 😊
Thank you!!! I hope your bouncy s’more animation has gone well 😁
Great content Saul!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for these videos! People making one's dreams come true!
No problemo, hope your work is going well!
@@saultoons Sorry for my gramathic xD
Ahhhhhh! I wondered how that don-blurry style animation was done. I’ve seen several UA-camrs who make animations that are just a treat to look at! I’m getting there, I think. I’m planning on an animated short (minimum viable project) and I need to make simple walk cycles and stuff for my main characters since their designs are super simplistic. Thanks so much! Subbing now so i can keep learning!
Yeah animation is difficult and time consuming but so worth the extra love and care, because good animation really is a treat to look at like you say :D That sounds awesome, I hope it goes well, I have a video on walk cycles if you want to check that out, and definitely pick up that Animators Survival Kit if you're interested in animation, it's so good :)
@@saultoons yeah, I actually came to this video from your walk cycles one!
These videos are gold
Thanks so much
Great video, thanks
No problem! Thanks for watching
Love your videos
Thanks CyberBullet 😁
Better than any animation I’ve ever made
You got this ilyCatty, believe in yourself!!!!
Pretty cool video man, im sure this will help me in the future
Thanks!
Oh… here’s that 12 principles of animation video I wanted. Niiiiice.
Oh yeh!!! :)
Quick and really clear Thanks :)
Thanks for watching Maxime! Glad you enjoyed it :D Any other videos you'd like to see?
@@saultoons You're welcome ! Yes maybe a vidéo about timing ! I experienced some issue with this in my last music clip
For sure, the in-between timing I mentioned in this video can help a lot with that. Think about the poses you want to emphasise and use in-betweens that help that :D Remember to join the discord and share your work for feedback in the future, we can help :D
Im currently working on pixel art right now. My animations are not coming out smooth. Hoping this helps. Also, how many frames was the rabbit? It looked like the peeking animation had a surprising amount of frames.
Your editing is so fun
Thanks! I try to make fun AND informative :D
super crack ´parce saludos desde Colombia
Hola a Columbia, gracias por vernos :D
Damn, lota of good points, woulda made my Snorlax cheeseburger animation a lot better.

Nice laser from your eyes man ! Love the comedy and the content ! Cheers !
Thanks Skull!!!!! Yes I have looked at computer screens so long I have developed laser eyes :D
@@saultoons hahaha, it means that I'm about to develop that skill soon also, hahaha ! Take care ! :)
Yes I’m sure you already have it too 😂 Thanks skull you too!

@@saultoons It will, but I'm having trouble with drawing pixel art plz do a beginner pixel art tutorial!

Your videoes are reallyyyyyyy cool and funny😃😄😁
Glad you like them!
Firstly I actually learned something
Secondly how does this guy get such good jokes
Firstly, I'm glad I could help you learn, and secondly, embrace your inner cringe
Hi, i really like your video, can you explain to me why when i export a gif it defaults to 1.0 speed and the image is messed up.Thank you
Answered in donut video :D
I missed the kitty 😢
Where did you animate this? I love the tiny bunny tho
Thank you :) it was animated in Aseprite!
yay. At last!
Tell me about it :|
Nice! my animation has improved much!
Sir, can you please create a tutorial of sprites animation on godot?
If it's possible I will be very thankful.🧡
Thanks for the idea! Maybe someday, I'm really focused on finishing my game project atm :D
How do you accurately stretch the ball along the arc?
To stretch something you have to understand how the weight is being affected by forces, in this case, gravity is the force pulling it down. So I stretch the ball when it's falling.
@@saultoons Sorry, I should've been more specific. I'm having a problem with stretching my ball a bit diagonally as it falls down, like at 2:58. I've been trying to do it manually and with Aseprite's selection tools, but it always looks too distorted in some way, I just can't keep the volume consistent (and it just starts looking a lot less like a ball).
What I'm asking is, how do you correctly manipulate the ball in accordance to the forces moving it to the right and downward? Is there some sort of pixel art technique I should use?
How did you make your profile picture
?
Please take a video of how it's done.
Check out my cartoon tutorial, it’s the same process! :) but I may make a video in future of how to do this profile picture style, thanks for the suggestion
I think one thing all tutorials so far are missing are Aseprite examples. So that if someone is not happy with result, one would have some source to check how Master has done it, so that young grasshopper could get a little closer to achieving the dream 🙃 All in all, tutorials are great. Fun and educative.
Yeah that's not a bad idea!
Out of curiosity how many frames does the final result have?
Checking the file, it's 91 frames total, but that includes frame holds, too!
Amazing video, but where are the devlogs?
Made some progress on the game dev stuff, not to fear more devlogs are coming :)
what software
Aseprite
Wonderful video as always! But I have a very important question..... What's the bunny's name?
Thanks Aleiocus... OMG I hadn't even thought of that. Suggestions?!
@@saultoons Sir Fluffumstuff
Hahaha that could work!
Yes , but of course! I will be the uberman once I harvest the power of animation!
TOO STRONG!!!!!
Loving your videos… but have to look them at half speed because you are rappin‘
Gotta go fast
I like this better than alan beckers because its more fun and that helps me learn :D
I’m glad I could help you learn! Alan Becker is a legend though :#
Also regarding the guy who thinks you're underrated, i dont think you are, i haven't seen a bad comment on this channel i just think no one knows about you :P (and not in a bad way)
Haha yeah I get what you’re saying! Most people have been really nice and supportive and I appreciate that :D
My favorite baldie!
My favourite Paskudlo :D
can i use your tutorial to make NFT art?
I don’t allow the usage of my work for any commercial purposes such as NFTs, though the tutorials should equip you to create your own intellectual property
3 dislikes are from those who can't even draw a bunny
Sometimes it do be like that
:)
:D
Cat nooo
hahaha RIP
Noooooooo
Did it run away?
Oh good, bald jokes are on the table. All that talk of bounce and all I could see was your green screen
Haha bald is beautiful!!!
hair
Beautiful
Be careful the guy is dropping knowledge bombs 🤌
hahah take cover!
This is very useful! Thanks for making this! :D
Thanks Raindeir, I appreciate you watching :D
