I started to play around two months ago and get a fantastic feeling when do some improvisation, just simple, but anyway, so much pleasure and creativity
This lesson is a great example of why we should learn scales; not for their own sake but so if/when we want to “break” or arpeggiate a chord or inversion and want to wrap it in some other notes for flavor, we know what works and what doesn’t. Strike a note NOT in the key of D here and it’s readily apparent.
I'm 12 and in 7'th grade. (Second year of middle school) Piano is an emotional outlet for me. I got cyberbullied a year ago and I sometimes still feel like I'm in that place. Your accent sounds like a regular UK accent to me. You are aware of cyberbulling right? I was typeing very fast so there's probably gonna be some typos in there.
You had me at the title CREATIVE. Love this instruction and encouragement to be creative by teaching a simple improvisation technique. I will adapt and use this with my 5 yr old grandson on piano and with my high school flute sectional rehearsals. Thank you so much! I am loving the free and creative Spirit you exemplify. Your goodies are worth the time and money invested. Do you have ideas or suggestions for games or competitions or apps that you use to motivate the young and old?
This is one of your best videos. This is also my first comment but i have been following your channel for a while. I have learned so much by watching your videos. Great work man!
Awesome. A lot of my videos follow this improvisation theme even if they don't specifically state it. Check out my playlists. theres one in there on improv.
Sir it takes a lot of hard work to create these types of stuff... thank you so much for the beautiful lessons... love form india😘😘🏯❤️hope someday u wll come up with an Indian Bollywood song on piano❤️
Very nice video ! Just one chord and it sounds so good ! WOW ! I tried alittle just now and this is very good fingering training too ! I will practice in differnt chords, perhaps minors too ! Thank you !
Thank you very much for this video Extremely useful in my learning stage, like all your videos Specifically what this triggered: I had been memorizing scales with Thumb on the key (or index finger or middle finger on the key when it is a black key), so it involved a stretch to the right, and this involved the key patterns With index finger on the key as in this video, I now follow the much easier system: Circle of Fourths becomes the base Thumb on 5th , index on key, and pinky on 4th I can thus navigate through all 12 major keys, moving forward on the Circle Instead of memorized key patterns, now, it is simply a move of WWH - from the index finger (index, middle, ring, pinky), and then the same pattern WWH from the thumb (thumb, index, middle, ring) - that completes the entire scale It has immediately made it lot more fun - very creative Thank you very much
Yes, that's another reason I like this kind of thing. You can use the left hand with it 'relatively' easily by keeping is really simple yet its still effective.
thank you so much for this great video. You are an amazing teacher, you have taught such a simple technique to create beautiful music. I was sitting on piano for hours. One can just add V and vi chords also in addition to I and IV chord you have shown and create even more variations.
Great video! Question: when applying this same principle to other keys, is it important to always use the same inversion ( 2nd one) or does it depend on the key? Or if it more important to just stay within the notes of the key? Thanks so much!
Your welcome. I have a paid course on piano practice out now (members.creativepianoacademy.com/cpr) and more on the way. But yes, I enjoy putting certain inspirational lessons on youtube. Inspiration is key.
I realize you're in the key of D but is there a reason behind you picking the 5 specific noted to find a melody? I know you can use all the notes in the key to create a melody but I just want to make sure is there any reason you picked those 5 specific noted to narrow movement down for beginners.
Nice! Should I press the sustain pedal once for each chord? Cause sometimes u play notes un the melody that are chromaticly together (g and f#). That is my doubt. Thanks!
As a general rule, once per chord. After that its subjective. Because 2 notes are played next to each other doesn't mean its bad or wrong. It might be the desired sound. I do it all the time. If the notes pile up and it gets too muddy and crosses the barrier into bad, then lift the susttain pedal in the middle of the bar.
I don't know if you still struggle, but try narrowing it down to even fewer notes. Start with only 3 notes for example, then build your way up. Its helping me get there
I'm a singer songwriter and I'm.mpst comfortable in the key of C so I will not hold you up for that Joseph :) love your lessons by the way ! A great help :)
Thank you so much Sir.... Your tutorials have been very very, (one more) very helpful😁... Thanks a lot... However, I can't figure out how to use these melodies or patterns (including past lessons) in playing a real song (probably as interludes) or combining them together to form something new... Any tips on how to do that.... Thanks With love from Nigeria, Africa...
Well, in the first instance, the patterns and tuorials should allow you to get some feel for melody and how patterns work. Then its about playing and experimenting. To be honest, there's a lot more to crafting a piece than I could fit into one youtube comment but hopefully these vids will be a stepping stone to reach it. I am tackling this is a much bigger way in a premium course.
👍🏿I have been watching your video now for 5 days and just love it! I’m a total beginner and having so much fun, it’s great to hear a fellow Englishman!
Hi there, amazing lesson thank you so much. Can you please tell us what software you are using that shows the keyboard and what chords you are using. That would help my practising a lot. Cheers
Love your videos, and I am getting back into my piano practice. My question is... I understand that you are starting on the D Major chord. When you add in the E and the G, what chord would this be then? Or does it matter?
Well, the main chord is a D major but you are playing around with lots of little variations like D Sus4 / sus2 / add6 etc etc. But essentially, at its core its the D major chord + variations on that.
Ow do Josef. A fellow Yorkshire man (and piano teacher) here... in fact, I think I'm just down the road from you... ish :) Good to see videos from someone who's quite local! Daz

I'm subscribing!!! Anyway Sir, may I ask you, like those chords, D and G for your left hand, how do we determine which melody we should use?? I learnt keyboard long time ago but I don't think I learnt the basic, I only memorize the chords for playing a song. Thanks and looking forward for your another lesson..
I usually use a sustain pedal for most of my creative stuff. One of my BIG issues with the way trad. piano is taught is that students won't get to use the sutain pedal until grade 4 something like that. That could be 3 years in or longer. The pedal adds so much magic to your playing \(depending on style of course) and is very inspirational. I teach pedal use from day 1.

Hi Jozef. It seems expensive when base on which tier you will subscribed to, over let say a year.I am not sure what you will be offering during that year let say. Your second question, I am assuming that you don't have to pay fees on top of the cost, is this correct?Andre
I hope people don't have to pay fees, but I think it depends where they are based. VAT and all that. As far as patreon goes, I see it primarily as a way for people who like and use my videos on patreon to give a bit back if they wish rather than specifically paying for something extra / a service. The extras are like bonuses. Like I said before, i'ts an experiment.
Hi Josef (sorry for misspelling your name on previous replies), as for Patreon I will keep an open mind, and will be watching (free) your videos and practice.Thank you

Yes, great for fingering also and finger strength. You can switch style as well to make it a little faster and harder.
Thank you very much for this video
Extremely useful in my learning stage, like all your videos
Specifically what this triggered:
I had been memorizing scales with Thumb on the key (or index finger or middle finger on the key when it is a black key), so it involved a stretch to the right, and this involved the key patterns
With index finger on the key as in this video, I now follow the much easier system:
Circle of Fourths becomes the base
Thumb on 5th , index on key, and pinky on 4th
I can thus navigate through all 12 major keys, moving forward on the Circle
Instead of memorized key patterns, now, it is simply a move of WWH - from the index finger (index, middle, ring, pinky), and then the same pattern WWH from the thumb (thumb, index, middle, ring) - that completes the entire scale
It has immediately made it lot more fun - very creative
Thank you very much
You are great! I do not know if I will compose but I know that on this way I`v got both hands playing at once! Thank you!
Yes, that's another reason I like this kind of thing. You can use the left hand with it 'relatively' easily by keeping is really simple yet its still effective.

how'd you come up with the D scale? your first finger isn't on a D.. Is this an inversion?
Its all the notes from the D major scale, but I might be using different hand positions to facilitate nice patterns. Notes are all D major tho.
Ok. Thank you.
Another well-done, helpful video👍. Excellent! Thank you.
Hello there! Is this the same as *Improv* ? This is really a plus in the solo piano journey.

Nice ! NAMING EACH keynote or chords by LETTERS 🔤🔠 is very helpful always with counting!

If the notes pile up and it gets too muddy and crosses the barrier into bad, then lift the susttain pedal in the middle of the bar.
