      Ebay sells a 40mm disk 20 mm thick for $11 each, two for $18.

    pulling on the magnet does not help, any distance added between the magnet and ball will lessen the force.

      While the second part is correct, pulling on the magnet a little doesn't increase the distance between the ball and the magnet. It just pulls the ball towards the magnet, because the brass is soft and will give.

    Maybe on sheet metal you can attach the magnet with some heat gun glue to increase the amount of force you can use to pull?

      That would not be beneficial. They actually make dent pulling tools that are designed to be used with hot glue, so don't think that would help to glue a magnet. (I am trai ed in paintless dent repair)
