Born in Fulton Country (College Park), GA.... raised in Inglewood, CA.... I gotta tell y'all something about this moment. 1995, I was 18 getting ready to be 19, kicking it with the homies and fam watching the Source Awards. When this part came on, I turned my TV's volume up as loud as I can... because I knew this would be, one of the GREATEST moments to ever happen in Hip Hop history. Me and the fam were proud of the South taking a stand... I was probably the only nigga bumping SPCM in Inglewood back in 94... LOL... CLASSIC Southern album. But, I also have to say this... even though this was a legendary moment in Hip Hop history, this moment spawned the line of spoiled trash Southern "MCs"..... Outkast, Goodie Mob, Ghetto Mafia, & Arrested Development are what made ATLANTA special... niggaz like Lil Jon, Soulja Boy, Young Jeezy, Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka, and these other new Atlanta rappers ruined that moment... not to come off angry, because I am and will always be an Outkast fan... but The South ain't been the same since... that's all I gotta say. Peace.
Neeno Brown exactly, and sadly, it's the corporations who sell this trap music bs... but sadly (once again) that's what a large percentage of the rap music audience love.
+Jacklyn Everage you're right. I can't trip and act like Puffy wasn't the most annoying "rapper" in the late 90s/early 00s. but yeah, Hip Hop lost its soul. Nobody has authenticity anymore. It's all about the dollar bills now... and that's why everybody sounds the same. I couldn't believe cats like Bobby Shmurda and YG were from Brooklyn (until I watched his interviews) and Compton. They sound exactly like close friends of mine down in Mississippi... I gave up on Hip Hop once Hot Nigga was *constantly* played on the radio. I know it's your typical club record, but yo, what the fuck?... You know what I miss though (AND WHAT HIP HOP *NEEEEEDS* RIGHT NOW)? the Afrocentric/Jazz movement. Man, High School was the best when everyone actually read books and learned about black culture. Now, most teens and young adults think Jazz Rap is boring... you'd get slapped for thinking that back in the early 90s. Lol
A defining moment for southern rap.. It opened doors for many southern rappers in the Southern hip hop scenes not only across Atlanta, but also New Orleans, Houston and elsewhere in the South.. That's when the South took over the era of hip hop
Outkast they are not or that bruh mobb deep ,wu tang clan, the lox and i can name u a few more who's way better the outkast lol they may be the greatest southern rap group of all times but they don't have nothing on the artists i just.mentioned lol
Dude, Outkast first 3 albums are all classics. In fact, the only 'Kast album I do not really like that much is the Love Below. Outkast always integrated their influences from other genres into their music, whether it'd be rock, gospel, or blues, but still stayed true. You can't say that about any of those groups.
@@antanderson3258No disrespect to him but maybe he wasn't around But the best music was being made then from all three coats.. They won but I would not say they destroyed anything.. the award was for Best new artists..
And now years later, look at today. The South is running the rap game. And now all these NY niggas try to sound like both Chicago & The South. Outkast definitely changed the Rap Game
I loved being in the Midwest during this period (Chicago) we listened to everyone. Had love for all. Wu, Death Row, E-40, UGK, Three Six... and then them Boi’s from the A showed up and showed OUT!!! My crew went CRAZY when we went into my basement to spin Southernplayalistic!!! It was the freshest dopest recording we’d heard. It broke the mold. Changed the game. And elevated Hip Hop as we know it. I’ll never forget that Source Awards; we were very upset at all the cliqs and labels for all that animosity messing up the greatest night for hip hop. When OutKast took the stage I was ashamed and embarrassed but Andre relived my anxiety when he took the mic and spoke those defining words, “the south has something to say, that’s all I got to say.” Don’t pull the thang unless you ready to bang...
im from Orlando FL..and when Dre 3000 said that..I WAS LIKE FINALLY..FINALLY!!! RESPECT THE SOUTH! it was like hip hop looked over the south as being irrelevant! our radio staion didn't do anything but bump northcoast and west coast music all day! but mostly northcoast! but my peers, fam, and I natural gravitated towards west coast..MAINLY SNOOP AND 2PAC!! OF COURSE 8BALL MJG.SCARFACE,UGK,TWISTA!!! BUT WHEN KAST WON..AND DRE SAID THAT S#1+,MAN IT FELT LIKE THA SOUTH WAS ON TOP OF THE WORLD!! LIKE MY TEAM WON THE SUPER BOWL,AND IT WAS A RAP AFTER THAT..ENTER GOODIE MOB-PASTOR TROY-DAVID BANNER-BIG K.R.I.T-ETC.ETC. BUT THIS NEW SOUTH IS SORT OF GOING IN A NEW DIRECTION.
I remember seeing the clip of Outkast winning that award once.....a long time ago. But it always stuck out to me for some reason. And re watching it now made it all come back. Look at the scowl on Salt's face when they had to say the name, OUTKAST. (around the 3:15 or 3:16 mark) The fucking hate from New York was thick as hell, man.
Keep in mind this was also the start of The East Coast /West Coast Beef between Bad Boy & Death Row Records unfortunately Outlast was standing in the middle.
+IMxYOURxDADDY Nope. It was strictly a Bad Boy/Death Row thing. Outside of those 2 labels, the beef was really non-existent. Nas and Tribe didn't have beef with the west coast.
Outkast, Goodie M.O.B. & the rest of the D.F. are LEGENDS PERIOD They're albums are still too deep for most people to understand(especially Soul Food). Their concepts, music & lyrics...ya'll have no idea how much they mean to hip hop, the South, the World! For them to give us such thought provoking, intelligent, soulful music & then to have some people from the South come out after them & put out dumbed down club bullshit (no limit was the main 1, you can guess the others that made a mockery of Southern Hip Hop) Shit is Garbage! All hip hop fans know what the fuck I'm talkin about. Right on to the Real & Death to the Fakers! Peace out
I love hearing the history of hip hop i was always into the music at time instead of the awards and behind the sence drama but now that i hearing more of wat some artists had to overcome makes me have more respect for wat they brought to the culture
I watched these awards when they came out. I remember them all. Remember the bad boy death row tension. Remember Suge . Remember Snoop. And I also remember Salt of Salt n Pepa with the stank face when she announced OutKast winning their award.

Bill Blass Wrong. Death Row got cheered in that tense as crowd, it was Suge dissing Puff who set it off. Snoop the tried to bang knowing damn well he did well in NY.
That one speech by 3000 at the 95 Source Awards started a revolution. The South was slowly but surely beginning to take over hip-hop "The South got somethin' to say!" Consider this Southern Hip-Hop's Declaration Of Independence.
+nahur you wish atl dont get no play outside the south(im from the south too) but you atl niggas ruined hip hop with that trap gold teeth shit what get me pissed that the whole south gets blamed for stagnating hip hop when it's only atl's fault
I'm saying this from Canada and I can tell you ATL getting play up here. I'm not gonna act like trap was a healthy movement for hip hop, it's lyrically devoid and bare of a message, but the work of producers like zaytoven, lex luger, esco, metro can't be ignored. 90's NYC for it's boom bap will always be my favourite scene but don't ever pretend the south and ATL didn't put in work to get on par with east and west coast.
outkast, my local homeboys. still have a lot of love for them. they were probably the last hip-hop act that really mattered and cared about the music rather than go on and on and on and on about how great they are and how much money they have or what bitch they're with. today's hip-hop just plainly fucking sucks.
Geto boys, ugk, outakst amd eightball mjg !!!!!! The pillars of southern rap and of you from the south and really from the south then you know the story goes a little like this!!!!!!!HIT IT!!!!!!

They left out Geto Boyz & UGK as the Southern pioneers tho. Who on the East coast didn't like Mind Playin Tricks??? But Andre did put the wheels in motion with that statement. The South blew the fuck up after that year...Master P, Cash Money, Luda, Nelly, DJ Screw...the list is looong.
+Six-Ten Visuals If you listen they did say before then they wasn't showing alot of love for southern musik like that. Even Outkast was in that mix until Andre said South got something to say. Even Pimp C said it in his song. "Quit Hating the South". "Yall shouldve listen to Andre, we got something to say"
Them East Coast cats can front if they want, but deep down they know they loved "Mind Playin Tricks"....@Justin Johnson...Nelly was later '90's along with Cash Money, Luda, Mystikal, etc.
Nani Wattz How is that song East Coast influenced?? That original song was made in the south in the 70's...their lyrical flow is nothing like anybody from the east.

@@eastwood1026Well fk y’all too then lmaoo. Y’all Cali cats was dissing on a low too. I heard people from there talk about Southern people calling them “country bumpkins” and all this other bullsh*t. Don’t get mad
@@eastwood1026It was never a bicoastal war. It was Death Row vs. Bad Boy.
Mann this is awesome. Outkast is the greatest hip hop group of all time. Period
Wu tang clan the greatest hip hop group of all times! Lol

+40 cal bruh, who cares about who is better or not, every group had their own sound and styles and people shouldnt even compare each group together. what matters is that they all put out classic material, fuck comparison
Respect to the South from the West! Love y’all!!!! This gives me goosebumps every time I watch it. And I deliberately search it up at times!
Respect to the West from the South we love yall too.The whole West

Love the West too mayne from a Texas Boy
"Y'all shoulda listened to Andre, bitch we got somethin to say" - Pimp C
Back then the South was everything to me. Scarface No Limit Outkast Ludacris TI. But now the south is messing up Hip Hop too me...
Naw. The SOUTH ain't messed up shit homie. It's the ones that try to sound like us.
+Adam Samaniego Young Thug is from Atlanta. Rich Homie Quan is for Atlanta. Future is from Atlanta. Those are the guys that ruin the sound of the South too me...
+Martinez Williams Just because they from the south doesn't mean they make "southern music".
+Adam Samaniego. that doesn't matter. he still represents the South.
Mainstream south music is trash Underground is where it's at
I Felt like if the source awards was in LA that year outkast would have got more respect
That’s cus L.A always respected everyone. But got no respect from any other coast.
Keondre Traylor New York was and to an extent still is closed minded. Even before Death Row existed, New York was hating on anything and anybody not from the East.
3 greatest speeches of all time
MLK “I have a dream”
Stone Cold “King of the Ring”
Andre 3000 “95 source awards”
all Southern folk too
Damn right. THE SOUTH ALWAYS HAS SOMETHING TO SAY!!
new york was hating hard
+Jus Me NY just got hated on by people they were cheering for. People ignore that though.
Bobby Bitch You notice that as well? NY was cheering Death Row.
Yup they was but the west an the south was like fuck this shit we know where we at lol
Fuck New York
I love being from the SOUTH!
there are so many moments in hip hop history that will forever be remembered. this one, in my opinion, belongs at the top of the greatest hits list.
This ironic, cause the new york music now (ASAP ROCKY) the music he makes sound something similar to chopped n' screwed which originated in Texas, its crazy how they slander down south music and now they desire to hear more from us.
+KyeThatGuy is that a bad thing? Also why no blame for the west coast?
Bobby Bitch because the west coast wasn’t hating on the south. That’s the difference.
The 90’s were the best times ever, I don’t care what NO ONE says
Andre was about to cry as he looked into the crowd
+Clique Zion na adrenaline and nerves were pumping. he was tired of the disrespect.
so pussy?
it did sound like it
Clique Zion big boi said Andre was on the verge of tears he was so passionate. They worked so hard to get to this point and had a moment in front of all of hip hop and y'all boo? OUTKAST is better than everyone in that room in music straight up
I can only imagine what he was thinking. Here is your big moment...all your hard has finally paid off. You're finally on the map...your family all tuned in to see you on the stage getting your award. You've put out one of the best, most influential hip-hop albums of all time and you get on stage for a very well deserved "best new group" award and your people... the folks in your industry...most likely some of your idols...all turn and FUCKING BOO YOU?!!??! I'm surprised he didn't just say "fuck all y'all" because he would be right for saying it. I mean it was a charged house because of all the shit between East & West, but you can't even get applause? I tell you what, Andres words rang true as ATL and the South sure had something to say and when folks finally got their heads out their asses they recognized.
killer mike is the man
Go back to that time y'all. It took balls of steel to let em know especially in nyc. Mad respect for andre 3000
Peace.
100% correct. Not only has southern hip hop declined but all hip hop in general. Its just a mess right now....sad.
Lol
*****
+Jacklyn Everage. i totally agree
A defining moment for southern rap.. It opened doors for many southern rappers in the Southern hip hop scenes not only across Atlanta, but also New Orleans, Houston and elsewhere in the South.. That's when the South took over the era of hip hop
Kid & the other ladies' voices when they read Outkast is hilarious. It's like a kid reading his bad grade aloud.
+Donald Chavis They didn't know Outkast.
Donald Chavis
The same can be said about A Tribe called Quest.
Oh I agree, but I would never compare 'Kast to Mobb Deep or the Lox. Those guys are not as good as Outkast.
Not only did they win, they absolutely destroyed the competition. everyone was too busy being gangster and not making art
Who u referring to?? Not the West right??
@@antanderson3258No disrespect to him but maybe he wasn't around But the best music was being made then from all three coats.. They won but I would not say they destroyed anything.. the award was for Best new artists..
@@luggerphilippe8409 I agree all 3 coast had hot music 💯 Outkast deserved that award fasho, NY didn't feel the same tho
@@antanderson3258 ima keep it real Bone thugs was in that category I think they should have won .
When OutKast took the stage I was ashamed and embarrassed but Andre relived my anxiety when he took the mic and spoke those defining words, “the south has something to say, that’s all I got to say.”
Don’t pull the thang unless you ready to bang...
And like the saying goes.... The rest was history
Outkast stood up for the South and we stood our claim in rap.
"You think that I could win king of hiphop when they wouldn't give it to Andre 3000?"

im from Orlando FL..and when Dre 3000 said that..I WAS LIKE FINALLY..FINALLY!!! BUT THIS NEW SOUTH IS SORT OF GOING IN A NEW DIRECTION.
in a bad direction... sadly. smh
Yeah, you're right.done good some bad. Idt it'll ever be golden like it was though, too many perpetrators in the game now
I’m from South Florida, Palm Beach county. And when 3K said that back then, my chest poked out in pride. That statement changed everything.
@Richard Travick 2Pac was from New York
Outkast came so hard and changed the rap game!
"Y'all shoulda listened to Andre, bitch we got somethin to say

If OutKast came out today, they would still be ahead of its time.
I remember seeing the clip of Outkast winning that award once.....a long time ago. But it always stuck out to me for some reason. And re watching it now made it all come back.
Look at the scowl on Salt's face when they had to say the name, OUTKAST. (around the 3:15 or 3:16 mark)
The fucking hate from New York was thick as hell, man.
+Hakkem Johnson Thank you. Ourkast got the award so of course the east didn't hate them, Suge just made the venue hostile.
Jay Johnson Not only Salt but look how Kid said their name.
The mentality of claiming east coast and west coast and none of the artist even own there publishing! God damn shame!
Well said.
I'm proud of Outkast for this. Andre Benjamin shut it down and Outkast justified it thoroughly.
Outkast, Goodie M.O.B. & the rest of the D.F. are LEGENDS PERIOD
They're albums are still too deep for most people to understand(especially Soul Food). Peace out
and i peep the Big Rube quote at the end! lol salute!
+Marcus Drew Now he really fucked the game up
Mr. Christopher pac fucked with them as well
My GOD!! Send me chills!! Legendary!! We are OUKAST!!
Outkast,Geto Boys,GoodieMob,TI,Killer Mike,Luda, Da Brat,UGK etc. they real Atlanta legends. The rest destroying everything now to being wack.
Thank God somebody with some since that can point the real niggas out!!!
And I also remember Salt of Salt n Pepa with the stank face when she announced OutKast winning their award.
..yeah n they way they said "Out-kast?" as if their name wasn't supposed to b on the paper.
One of the top 5 greatest moments in hip hop history. So proud to be a southerner and ATL transplant.
25 years since their debut
This is why I love Andre3000! Outkast my favorite group
everybody who wasn't from new york got booed, da brat, 95 south started twerking on the tootsie roll song they got booed, they booed snoop and dre but snoop fired back at the crowd
Bill Blass cause they were G's and deep af lol
Bill Blass Wrong. Death Row got cheered in that tense as crowd, it was Suge dissing Puff who set it off. Snoop the tried to bang knowing damn well he did well in NY.
And now East/West want to sound like the south. Thanks to UGK, Outkast, Geto boys
That one line changed hip hop forever. The south still rules to this day. 3 stacks and fat sacks over everybody.
I was always so excited to hear about ATL back in the day.It reminds me of when I moved to ATL from PA.
We need another OutKast album.
Notorious the nicest emcee of all time.
Flow is still unmatched to this day.
King of Kings.
Facts
Absolutely and just seeing a lot of the other legends under that same roof. What can I say it was the golden age.
The Rap Game was not ready for that Southern hip-hop but outcast got they mind Rightttttttttttt!
Those first three Outkast records can't be fucked with. They're so good.
That one speech by 3000 at the 95 Source Awards started a revolution. The South was slowly but surely beginning to take over hip-hop "The South got somethin' to say!" Consider this Southern Hip-Hop's Declaration Of Independence.
People Definitely learned what the South had to say from that point on.
Even Pac was ready to rock with them before. . . you know :/.

The great 3 stacks
This is the first time I've seen a clip of Dre's famous acceptance speech. Thank you for posting!
I fucks with OutKast.
Even Pepa was in the back like "damn, okay."
Andre 3000 and big boi South Hip-Hop icons. Started the south hip-hop trend #ATL
Look at Big Gipp backing Outkast.....
& then Gucci Mane came into the game, trap blew up and now Atlanta is bigger than both sides. This is some prophetical shit right here.
90's NYC for it's boom bap will always be my favourite scene but don't ever pretend the south and ATL didn't put in work to get on par with east and west coast.
nahur trap really blew into orbit when Young Jeezy dropped Thug Motivation 101. TI and Toomp started it tho.
Tha Block Thinka So you saying Atl ruining music lol....
outkast, my local homeboys. still have a lot of love for them. they were probably the last hip-hop act that really mattered and cared about the music rather than go on and on and on and on about how great they are and how much money they have or what bitch they're with. today's hip-hop just plainly fucking sucks.
You really know em like dat??
@@bloodclawvega6243 if you're from the ATL. would you be saying that?
Geto boys, ugk, outakst amd eightball mjg !!!!!! The pillars of southern rap and of you from the south and really from the south then you know the story goes a little like this!!!!!!!HIT IT!!!!!!
And Eastcoast ppl wonder why the South don't fuck with they music!!
It's funny the east coast ppl would hate on the south but the east coast artist is sounding like southern rappers.
+derek nesbeth Only Bobby Schmurda sounds Southern.
+dccmaj man asap using the screwed up sound from Houston in some of his music and drake does too.
K. dot Drake is Canadian. Canada doesn't have any specific sounds. and ASAP Rocky uses Houston sounds but when he opens his mouth, you can tell he isn't from the South.
+dccmaj man schmurda use to spend alot of time down south(miami) visiting his family
And just like that legends where born
They left out Geto Boyz & UGK as the Southern pioneers tho. Who on the East coast didn't like Mind Playin Tricks???
But Andre did put the wheels in motion with that statement. The South blew the fuck up after that year...Master P, Cash Money, Luda, Nelly, DJ Screw...the list is looong.
Six-Ten Visuals even Jay Z admitted he used to bump UGK riding Dirty
+Six-Ten Visuals If you listen they did say before then they wasn't showing alot of love for southern musik like that. Even Outkast was in that mix until Andre said South got something to say. Even Pimp C said it in his song. "Quit Hating the South". "Yall shouldve listen to Andre, we got something to say"
Nelly from St.Louis
Them East Coast cats can front if they want, but deep down they know they loved "Mind Playin Tricks"....@Justin Johnson...Nelly was later '90's along with Cash Money, Luda, Mystikal, etc.
Nani Wattz How is that song East Coast influenced?? That original song was made in the south in the 70's...their lyrical flow is nothing like anybody from the east.
THE SOUTH HAD SOMETHING TO SAY!!! 💙💙💙 love my city ATL💜
Its so funny now that NY is literally copying and imitating every aesthetic from the south. Hilarious! This was a moment from A3K I'll never forget.
