- A drone operator encounters a UFO.
THE OCCUPANT is used with permission from Hugo Keijzer. Learn more at hugokeijzer.com.
Galkina is a drone operator sergeant on duty when she gets an alarm. As part of a secret military program hidden from the public, her work uses nuclear-powered drones to lure alien objects into orbit, and then immobilizes and captures them.
But when one such object is lured to earth and takes the bait -- and Galkina loses her connection to her commanding officer -- she is forced to make decisions quickly, and questions just what is real and what is not.
Director Hugo Keijzer, along with writer Phil M. Howe and producer Maurice Schutte, have created a superbly crafted, dynamic and suspenseful sci-fi thriller whose storytelling grabs viewers from the first moment and holds their attention with expertly calibrated suspense and drama.
Though there are references to "alien objects," the short doesn't lean on any VFX work or explore deep philosophical territory, like many sci-fi films. It's really a propulsive piece of cinema, combining muscular camerawork, an effective score and precise performances to put us in the moment of Galkina's crisis, navigating her dilemma right alongside her.
Essentially the story is one suspenseful sequence, but it centers around one split-second decision that must be made in the most perilous of circumstances. The writing gives us just enough information to understand what Galkina is facing, but like her, we're only privy to what we've been told. When she loses her connection to her commanding officer -- and another voice enters the fray, one that contradicts her understanding and training -- she must decide quickly what to do, and essentially whether or not she can trust what she is seeing. Her decision treads the line between safety and possible catastrosphe, but it's not an easy one to make.
The ending moments of THE OCCUPANT give rise to a mystery and concern that clearly is designed to intrigue viewers and pique their ongoing interest. The title, of course, gives away that this is the opening salvo of a much larger story, and the ambition and scale of the production clearly are feature-level, beginning with the opening wide-view shots of a foggy, mysterious landscape. But as a self-contained piece, it also does its job well: it portrays one narrative dilemma with panache. But solving one problem opens up a whole other realm -- and draws viewers expertly into a whole world of danger and intrigue that they will likely want more of.

As a military officer in Canada, who has some dealings with drone operations. I found this video very true to form, additionally I love how this kept me on the edge of my seat. When can you say that, I look forward to the next instalment.
Please explain story to me. Im not sure I got it. Who was giving the order to attack base and what was the helicópter dong in that area? Thx
@@ufosrus not sure about the helicopter but it was the alien who gave the order. It imitates what appears to be everything within the memory of drone operator. Hence all the details and insistence. Doesn't feel professional, instead, personal.
@@ufosrus a random helicopter was just passing from there and aliens somehow crashed it, then at the end they contacted the pilot of the helicopter as they are rescue team but it's probably gonna end bad. And the drone pilot, she was also getting instructions from aliens which we all thought is his commander, as u have seen his commander was also confused that who was giving the orders and she did the right thing by not crashing the drone.
Canada’s military is weak asf😂 don’t even talk about my nation japan we would have a military if we where allowed to
No.1 U.S.A. No.2 Russia No.3 China No.4 India No.5 France No.6 Britain ( list of most powerful military’s on earth in order )
I need an explanation! Ok, so she tries to lure a UFO (probably aliens) with a nuclear drone into the radius of an EMP blast in order to knock it down. However, the UFO takes control over the comms, acts as her commanding officer and tells her to fly to the military base and to not turn on the EMP. She follows her orders not knowing she is talking to an immitation of her CO. She is then told to "crash?" into the base (so everything there goes nuclear), but at the last second she decides to not follow the order, tries to fly away but loses control (she also spots another flying object on her radar). Everything goes black, the drone crashed into the woods (but did not explode), suddenly the real CO breakes into the bunker and tells her everything is ok but that the voice she was talking to was not him.... Ok so until that point I kinda understand but what happens after just confuses me. What was the last thing the saw on the radar? Was it the civilian helicopter? If it was then why did it speak english and who's voice was it at the end? Why did everthing go black when she lost control of the drone? Did the EMP go off? Did the UFO crash? Was that it's plan? why? Could it be that the REAL CO told her to crash in order to stop the alien from taking over the world?
This comment needs to be on top
Not too sure about why everything went black (very curious) but I don't think the EMP ever went off b/c we never heard the order nor see her press the button she was ready to press earlier. Then the officer tells his superior (not sure ranks/rank names) there was a civilian helicopter that took off + crashed and later confirmed that there were no survivors. The voice we hear is meant to be one of the occupants of the helicopter broadcasting on (I assume) all channels, saying that she survived that crash and needed help. (Ofcourse we know by that point that it's the alians luring people in) and the last thing we hear is that someone answered her /it's call. Please make a movie
Ok so I think I figured it out. The original UFO crashed and the commander at the end says "it was always one step ahead" and implies the aliens were up to something.
I interpret this to mean this UFO was meant to counter lour the humans for nefarious reasons. At the end, that is the intentionally crashed UFO speaking to the helicopter pilot that wandered into the area, and the UFO or aliens are up to no good.
@@Super_Jayhawk but didn't the girl say she crashed? If so, then doesn't that imply that she was the pilot (alien) sendjng out the signal pretending to be the woman that died?
@@SamOverMars yeah that part is confusing but I think the alien crashed the unauthorized helicopter. Not sure. For being so well made it really isn't clear.

I did some digging, and found several Variety articles discussing the awards this short or longer version is up for. I think that the helicopter portion of this short got added is a preview for something else. The articles say that "The Occupant" is a story of a female geologist who's helicopter crashes in the wild and discovers she is not alone. No mention of this short. Google the writers name and you can read the articles for yourself. This was a fantastic little gem and would like to see more of it without meddling by any big studios. The will only screw up this wonderful piece .
How do I find the full version???
Ohhhh wow it makes so much more sense now. This short was written backwards. They started with the ending already set in stone - a helicopter crash in proximity of aliens (the setup for the longer feature you mentioned) - then tried to explain how that could have happened. But they wrote themselves into a corner, because presumably the military doesn't show up immediately at the start of the longer feature. So the characters in this short CAN'T actually make the final plot connection. Hence their inexplicable confusion about the helicopter and vague mention of the aliens being "two steps ahead".
please post a link
They have a kickstarter page for their movie, and they explained that they made the short movie as a way to introduce and pitch the full movie concept (as described on IMDb) to investors. It does look really good

@@yokehuatgoh Subtitles are not so complex as the speech. You're seeing "EMP started" when she says "i am starting to execute the EMP protocol" or "Sir" when she says "comrade Major". She approves whom she is talking to every time, instead of just saying "sir", as it's always done in russian army. Maybe the style of subtitles is closer to european minds, but surely is not so atmospheric as the speech
@@MrLobsterity This is so strange for any russian military equipment to see strings like "check on" there should be "проверка" and so on.
Maybe the voice telling her to crash was the real Major. The aliens came into the base and took the form of her officer. The alien is now in the base. The real Major, tried to get her to bomb the base with the drone to kill the aliens who had landed there. Why would the alien craft crash if she didn't activate the EMP? Her Major saw what was happening. It was too late to do the EMP. He decided to crash the drone into the base to kill the aliens. The helicopter crash was a coincidence and in the end when you hear the base reply to Danny in the helicopter, it is the aliens who have now taken over the base. Their reply to the helicopter sets the scene for a follow-up movie. - Just a thought.
I think that might be the point you can see even after the blackout she seems somewhat skeptical I always love films that make you question reality
Nope, because then he would've told her that they're inside the base if his intention was to kill the ayylmaos and not that they've 'evacuated' it.
this is the most likely explanation but there is 0 evidence to support it. Feels like there was a lot cut out of this short, it just seems really incomplete and trying to be too mysterious.
The voice telling her to crash was undoubtedly the alien. Russian speakers elsewhere in these comments have noted that the choice of words the alien uses in particular, beyond breaking from professional vocabulary, is particularly personal and emotional, in a way that her superior would not speak even in such an emergency. Plus, the voice brings up her family right after she glances at the photo of them (which was, before this point, not important and not shown), heavily hinting at some supernatural element to the voice.
In any case we can probably take the conclusion of this film at face value because the feature film focuses on Danny and not the Russians
Nonetheless the fact that we can speculate such just goes to show how great this short is
@@LouSaydus the short is meant to introduce a larger feature film they are trying to get funding for, so that's why the short feels incomplete and ambiguous
So is everyone just ignoring the fact that the ending was incomprehensible?
@Vilius Grigolius Right, I get that. But what was all that nonsense about the civilian aircraft?
I think the aliens were talking to each other, and trying to lure the drone to their crash.
I think the first person was the human that actually was looking for help. The second voice was the "helpful" alien, that then killed the human, hence the explosion. But it could be the other way around.
I, too, think it was quite hard to understand, but am wondering if they didn't really crash the UFO, but rather crashed that helicopter by mistake. Then, the alien UFO was approaching the survivor of the helicopter and talking to her in the same way it had talked to the first woman. I wonder if this story is really just a scene from a much larger story or potential movie.
@Vilius Grigolius The beginning said it was secret military coalition so maybe that meant a coalition of many countries. So, maybe British were stationed there as well. She sounded British to me. I don't know though.

The whole of the forest with the snowstorm is so beautiful, wish I had as a screensaver. Beautiful.
This was so gripping, I didn't even notice the score until I replayed the film to listen for it. I'm looking forward very much to the continuation.
A fantastic piece of work.
Score? Is there some kind of scoring in short films that I am not aware of?? Just started watching these few days ago.... Thanks
This is what it looks like when someone encounters a demonic force
so that seargent that walked in & told her thank god youre alright then he said that wasnt me you were talking to ..... Perfect alibi for him if it Had been him she was talking to.
May be they had multiple receivers so that others including that officer might have heard this conversation
Russian sounds great in any form of media.
This was a very well made short movie.
Hi! I’m in the USA and I love your language and your actors/actresses and your tv series!!! This has got to be one of the best ever sci-fi’s ever! Please, please, please make a tv series from this shorty film. I’m on this edge fo my seat waiting!? 😉👍🥰. Another story we are all fascinated with here is your Bigfoot/Yeti stories! Especially the young group ( 9?) who all were killed by something in the frigid wilderness years ago?! That would make a terrific sci-fi series! Of course, showing honor and respect for those who died and their families you would change the events to fit, buy keep the same story base. Thank you soooo much for this great, talented, wonderfully written, directed, produced and acted film. Much praise to you..... and well deserved!, 😉👍🥰
Such a brilliant short film, great!..
what if we're meant to think the person who returns the distress call is the alien, but 'Danny' is actually the alien
Possible. We might find out when the movie comes out.
Terrifying. But terrifyingly good. 😂😂😂
Yeah babe I'll get you new blades
No idea what was going on here, especially at the end.
😱👽 the aliens😹
The good old switcheroo.
Short films are such a tease
Well done! I love the twists in the Plot . . . it keeps everyone guessing, all the way up to the end; and beyond! This would be one that merits a "Part 2".
Hey Roger
How are you keeping,
Where are you from??
That was extremely well done... I'm not inclined to like anything casting a Russian soldier in a positive or even neutral light this year. Just not that time, right now. The quality of this short overcame my inclination...
i really appreciate your comment. i feel the same, but if it helps…the film was made in 2019
The major has Ukrainian flag on his arm. 6:23
@@GR_Guitar Oh yeah? Interesting detail, that... Hadn't noticed. Thank you.
That was great enough for a part 2.
Well I couldn't make any sense of that.
They thought they were luring aliens, but in fact aliens who could even read their thoughts and mimic human language were luring their drone and established contact with sergeant Galkina under the guise of her commander and tried to direct the drone to human base, but at the last moment "real" humans "helped" Galkina to understand that she was being fooled. Still humans downed a civil aircraft in an attempt to destroy a UFO. The last two voices are: English-speaking woman - survivor of a helicopter crash, English-speaking man - an alien, mimicing now English language, "happy" to locate the survivor by her SOS-message and destroying the rest of the helicopter debris where she is in a final scene, probably to kill the unnecessary witness. A lit bit oversophisticated and obviously unrealistic plot, but that's it.
@@s-dyorindyorin-s149 Ummm... okay, if you say so.
wish this was feature length. had me on the edge of my seat.
Ok. Best short film I’ve seen on Omeleto. Def. love it
This realy make me the chills
good pilot, hope it goes movie
I swear this girl did such a good job acting. Everything made me feel like It was real. The flash backs of her family gave me goos bumps. This was very suspenseful
this was really good........ worthy of a screen play for a full blown movie project..... WELL DONE.... VERY WELL DONE!!!!!!!
