"In its 1970 review of Workingman's Dead, Rolling Stone famously said of Uncle John's Band, 'Near the end of the song there is an a cappella section done by everyone, sounds like about 62 tracks, maybe 63. Just listen to it, and try not to smile..' In its live renderings, in a stadium like the Oakland Coliseum, the Dead were able to get 40,000 people to sing along with that section, and it was always a glorious release when they end with 'he's come to take his children home...' Indeed, try not to smile... This is from the penultimate show on the Dylan & The Dead tour." - David Lemieux
For many of us who were regularly attending shows in the Eighties, 1987 was an important time. Throughout 84-86, Garcia's drug use left him looking almost lifeless on the stage (even though he still unleashed some really great playing from time to time) and most everyone was very concerned about his well-being. After healing from the coma in 86, he often sprang to life on the stage (take a look at a video from 85 and compare it to this video from 87). He smiled, rocked, and swayed and occasionally even sort of danced. It was such a pleasure to see him return to being animated. It was, in my humble opinion, the beginning of the road that led to some very fine performances in 89 and 90 (and 91). I attended this show and have very fond memories of it (and I bought the DVD release many years ago). The "Jack Straw" opener that day was especially stellar. The Dylan set was sometimes great, other times a little confusing (mostly because Dylan often chose to holler-mumble his amazing lyrics; that said, the band backed him up quite well-- and it was a pleasure to see Jerry play pedal steel on "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight."). I will admit that I think the band was strongest and most inventive from 69-77 (my fave year being 72), but seeing them in concert in the 80's (and 90-91) was often a great pleasure-- and they still often played some great, great music. RIP Mr. Hunter ... thanks for SO many great songs ...
87-91 had some GREAT shows where Jerry seemed fully engaged and sparked - Id say for me those last 3-4 years had glimpses and glory but post Brent it was starting to wither somehow
@@Steve-uv9kb I really love your heartfelt writing. I caught the end, then got on Phish tour. I watched a lot of really brutal endings to a lot of Lovely lives. I hope we can all have a chance to do it again in another time and place. The next time, Hopefully much longer.
72 was a great year. Workingmans Dead, American Beauty and Jerry's solo album Garcia all came out that year. All my favorites. Absolutely stellar! I just wish I was alive to experience it but my mom was only 12 in 1972.
All us Deadheads owe a huge THANK YOU to Mr. Robert Hunter. Your words are still shaping people’s lives, and I believe they always will. Truly timeless works of art.
RIP to one of rock music's most prolific and profound lyricists. Many lessons learned from your humble, honest, and reflective words. Here's hoping Mr. Hunter is able to connect with Capt Trips once more.....again RIP
Today Is my Golden Birthday, I turned 26 today !!!!! Just got my Giants Stadium Boxset Yesterday, Absolutely Beautiful Design and Quality, Thanx Dead.net and RIP Robert Hunter !!!!! 💀⚡✌🏼🌷❤🎶☀🌈🕊🙏
This is first song I remember of the Dead bc of the Cannon ball reference. It reminded me of a building in Yorktown that had a cannonball stuck in the side of it. I live there when I was in Second grade 1986!!! Moved to Mississippi a year later. Tabb Tigers😎
While writing a book about a bunch of psychedelic synchronistic events that occurred during the mid to late 80s, I wrote a passage that I felt was very Uncle John's Band-esque, I thought about how it reminded me of a verse in Uncle John's Band, I mused over it to myself.... & that moment my phone chimed a UA-cam recommended videos from my GratefulDead channel subscription... Uncle John's Band. "Well, God Damn, I declare...have U seen the light?!... He's come to take his children home! Inspiration! Move me brightly, like a song of scents and colors...... More than this I will not ask, faced with mystery dark & vast, statements just seemed vain at last... (~);}
What I wanna know is how does the song go? Robert Hunter knows R.I.P. hes writing with Jerry again now for ever changed so many lives with his words anyone else read his epic ? Available as a free pdf online
543deadhead I’ll take anything I can get, released or not. It’s such a refreshing way to start winding down my week. I hope the Thursday vids never stop.
jennoelle29 same but for me I already have this whole show on dvd. I would like to see stuff that's not release yet rather than stuff I've seen already a thousand times
One move of my thumb and there is sunshine in between all this death, dirt and destruction on UA-cam. Nice people making nice coments. A little sunshine daydream
I remember in 1987 I was 17 and despised the Dead. They were old, slow, and that "hit" Touch of Grey was awful (still is). I was angry, occasionally violent, and gravitated toward punk and grunge. Now I finally see the light -- in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
R.I.P MR. HUNTER..yes the concrete venue, where sound was on the treble index of 10, no, 11, so Bob Dylan was there, oh, can not recall that, wonder why, NOT.

Celebrating the life of Robert Hunter!
That laugh/smile on Brent's face was priceless. Thanks Again Boy's.
Brent was the best
Some of the best lyrics ever written. Rest in Peace Robert.
R.I.P. Robert Hunter ... You and Jerry were such an inpiration for our band members.

Happy Birthday Jerry, wish you were here!
First Dead song I ever heard back in 1971.
The very best. Now I want to sing along and dance. We miss you Jerry. 😢
I was at this show, I love this song.
That improptu repetition there..."how does the song go?" jerry, sit down and relax...have a glass or two of beer...." Love this song...
Thank you Hunter
those glances between Brent and Bobby and Jerry were all so much part of joy back when
Glorious, Love is so Mighty, Thanks to all of You:)
Dylan and the Dead show, I was there; one of the Best Shows Ever!
I can hear your voice Brent
I know you are playing to angels in heaven with Jerry and Robert.
Have been listening to a lot of '87 these past few years. It is standing the test of time. Great period. The spring tour in paticular.

My favorite Dead song. I’ve been a fan since 1969!
I wait all week for these
my brother John liked this song!
“Wo, oh, what I want to know, is are you kind?”
Yep
indeed
Godspeed Hunter, thank you !
I was here up front. Funny how they mixed up the lyrics.
Oo oo what I want to know. How does the song go?😋🎸
This made my day the sequence starting at around 3:30 with a big Brent smile at 3:40.
Boiler Room Drums lol I think that’s because one of them messed up the lyrics
Ain't no time to hate... are you kind?? I wish these were the stones upon which we measured ourselves.
HOW DOES THIS SONG GO?!?!
Thanks so much! Your downloads make me a better person! I love ya!!!!
Thank you
Fare thee well Robert Hunter ❤️
Fluffhead was a man....🐠
I really miss my East Coast Spring Tours. Time moves on - "Where does the time go?"
God bless
Jump on the Goose flock. They're playing some amazing music and awoke a part of me that died in 1995
Phantastic
Nice shirt Jerry!
This show was on anyone week Anniversary at Boot Camp, Great Lakes IL. I arrived there 7/17/87. Would have rather been at this show
I waited months for this version. Amazing!
Me too! I feel ya!
In memory of Robert Hunter and John Cohen of the New Lost City Ramblers (Uncle John) who passed on a week apart

"..have you seen the LIKE" , is the proper lyric.
Don't you just love synchronicity?!
God, I love Jerry and Brent's bromance on full display here.
Thought I'd send a few mates over!
LOL, everyone laughing at Brent because he can’t ever remember if it’s “playing to the tide” or “by the riverside!”
This song got more melodic over the years.
❤️
Beautiful tones. Is it too late to add to the Dead Covers Project? R.I.P RH

Brent is like if Tom Waits sang in Michael McDonald's range.
Is that Bruce Hornsby on Keyboards?
Probably
Believe so
R.I.P MR. HUNTER..yes the concrete venue, where sound was on the treble index of 10, no, 11, so Bob Dylan was there, oh, can not recall that, wonder why, NOT.
Jerry
Do not try this at home...
Its called a xylophone...
iwt
ooops .. somebody got the lyrics confused .. must have been the persians
Jerry did heroin because his body was in so much pain, which is why he used not to get high.
