I just discovered your channel. Unlike most van/boat life enthusiasts, I don't seem to find you annoying, on the contrary, quite calming and enjoyable. You might add the eco-fan to the stove, to distribute the heat, yes. But also you could get a thermal-electric converter. They cost, yes, but for the dead heat that goes up the flue you can get electricity you can use for heating again. Also, for the sacrifice of the stove, you could get a rocket stove. Its benefits are virtually no smoke, and no need to cut the bloody wood to size, if you make a gravity fed version. Pellets, briquettes, branches logs, paper, hell, even trash- it can burn it all. I just stumbled upon your videos. Keep them coming! They're great!Watching them keeps us poor sailors from Ontario going while we're on the hard 😢 We also have a woodstove on our G31. In the spring and fall we like to use the woodstove to dry things out when the humidity gets to high. Our woodstove also burns anthracite which lasts for hours at a very even heat. We have friends that winter in Ontario aboard an Alberg 30. They created a rope suspended mattress that allows for a small air gap below it, which has entirely eliminated the condensation below the mattress. Cheers! Bryan

I strongly recommend the diesel parking heaters. They dry the air and the 5kw version heats our 36 foot boat easily. Throw a blanket something over the companionway or at least cover the slots with some plastic sheeting. Or sail south!

Are the slots in the washboard horizontal, I mean fore and aft? You might get a blastic cover with slanted slots which should help a lot. There seems to be some room in the cockpit locker. Have you wondered about a Webasto or Ebersbaecher heater?
You should check out the thermal fans that run off the heat from you're would stove to give you circulation....check out Living off Grid.....on u Tube.
Such a fun video guys! You both totally have your own unique vibe making the videos fun and super informative. Love the music choice at the beginning of this one as well! Nice that you have the option of space heaters and the woodstove. On our first boat which was a 28 we had a little portable alcohol heater which worked great but we were always worried about fumes. We decided the next boat would have a diesel heater and that’s exactly what we have now. It’s gravity fed so doesn’t require any power and it’s a super nice dry heat, much like a woodstove but no worries on fumes. Anyways - loved the video guys well done!! ⛵️
I have the same fireplace as you do. I like my wood burner better than the diesel or propane heaters I've had in the past. I buy 'Presto logs' and chop them into 4" pucks. I add a firestarter square and a wood puck into a paper bag, then wrap them into a cannonball. I keep a dozen or so onboard in a bin. You just add one and light the bag on fire. The paper and firestarter burn so quickly they get the draft going with almost zero smoke. They produce a nice fire for a little over an hour per puck. The Eco-fan will move heat around the cabin, without the fan most heat goes up the chimney. The smallest size does the trick and just fits on top.
Yes...although after a few months the pleasantness of the sound begins to wear off... :D

im moving in to sailboat.. winters here can get really cold, down to minus 30. and im not warm untill my space is at least 25c.. think i have to insulate the boat : D

I happened upon your channel the other day and it caught my eye since I have the little sister to your boat - a Catalina 25. I always enjoy channels who are sailing smaller boats... and winter sucks. Looking forward to spring and back to sailing!
I would like to recommend an 8th way while underway. Look up "PTC 12v 100W Heater" on ebay or somewhere. This the same heater element that is in a car. It is a ceramic element heater element with a computer fan to blow hot air. Only use it while the engine is on and the alternator is performing or it will drain down your battery. This heater will draw around 8 amps. Just hook it up to a DC source. I also recommend getting a DC circuit breaker switch that doubles as an ON/OFF switch as well as circuit protection. One 20 amp switch could run 2 heaters. They cost around $14-15 dollars. A couple heaters while motoring can extend your sailing season.

Great video guys. We are just entering winter here in NZ, and just got our heater sorted. Albeit, our winter is a bit less harsh here (you can see in our videos that we swim year round!)
As a former winter liveaboard in a cold climate (Toronto), Insulation is number 1 on the importance list! insulate everywhere you can. That reflectix is great. The more you can insulate, the less heat you loose! Keep an eye on your shorepower cable. If you overload it with multiple heaters ( and the other loads onboard) the connection at the boat can melt and start fires. I used to check my connections every morning and keep an eye on the AC Ammeter on my panel.
Great videos. How warm does your wood stove make your table? The only place I have to put a wood stove is at the end of the settee and I don't want to melt the cushion. My electric mattress toper is awesome in the cold.

Ok so most of those little cube heaters put out 5120 btus per unit on high...around 3400 btus on medium. Given those numbers you two are staying moderately warm on 8500 btus to 10200 btus depending on the 1.5 heaters number up to two you mentioned. It might really help to close up those vents on the companionway slats during the winter. Just use some non marring blue tape. You two might be able to get down to one heater. Since the electric heaters don't burn oxygen like the wood or a diesel heater, you don't need a venting system so badly. It is likely the boat isn't that tight you'd both not get enough oxygen to make it. Like I said I have the Sig-100 on my Cat 30. You probably already have the setup to switch the one you are using as a wood fired unit to a diesel unit. Trust me even the summers in Canada can really get cold at times...the Sig-100 can do the smallest amount of heat (5500btus)for that type heater up to 12000 btus. Getting the burn right on a wood unit is next to impossible and takes up all of your time to regulate typically.(Not to mention finding the space for wood, feeding it, getting more little tiny chunks from somewhere??) Diesel would get you through the non-shorepower times and not require electricity if it is the gravity tank fuel feed. Stay warm there...we still have February to endure...and for you guys March and April.

Great tips! We live aboard as well- currently in Sidney. Another tip is down throws. They really heat up and don’t need electricity! We are thinking of wintering there at the causeway next Winter. How are the facilities there?

Yes we moved aboard in 2014 but only lived onboard in Sidney/Victoria for about 18 mos before sailing to Mexico for the warmth! We just got back to BC in May last year. We’d be particularly interested in learning about the laundry and showers there... we heard they were a FAR walk? How much and how many showers, etc? Hope to meet you guys sometime 🙂

One more way...Place a kerosene oil lamp in your solid fuel stove. Preheat the flue to get the air flowing in the right direction. Cheers.

I’ve spent three winters insulating.With closed cell foam.On a cold night,I can be in a t-shirt and Baer feet. You can make it toasty

There are oil filled radiator heaters that work very well on a boat. Much better and more efficient than the style your using.
