I was an intern for a radio show, then a scriptwriter for a kid's TV show, and worked on set for a comedy skit program. The way these people can just flip their switch on and off is just, wow. I swear, the second the recording light turns off, the smile disappears faster than you can blink. It's like their soul and energy drains out instantaneously.

I've worked in the radio industry for over 10 years and can confirm that this is 150% accurate😂 Sometimes the silence is due to some tension caused by an argument that may have happened off air during one of the ad breaks.

Back then, to be an onair presenter a tertiary education was a prerequisite (a teaching diploma/degree was good enough), you had to be well-read, smart, have a great voice; and campus or community radio experience was a huge bonus. Looking back, most of my onair colleagues were lawyers, law students, teachers, pharmacists, medical students, and they all had worked on campus radio while at University. Unfortunately these days radio stations hire social media influencers who know NOTHING about the art and science of radio presenting or the radio industry as a whole. The assumption is that having millions of Instagram followers translates to an increase in radio listenership. It couldn't be further from the truth. Social media influencers are really killing radio in my country (South Africa). Most are superficial and shallow airheads.

He had me get in a booth so he could hear how I'd do the show, or read their spots (commercials). I got hired on the spot. Get requested to do live remotes (broadcast live at events), 2. Get requested specifically to do commercials, 3. Get your show syndicated to different stations in different cities. And the corporations that own stations are notorious for staff cuts. Fantastic job, not really a full-time career.

What I love about them is the don’t over due their sketches. SNL think every sketch HAS to be 3-6 mins. It feels forced and many parts of the sketch are boring. Sometimes you just need 1:30 to laugh. Bravo!

I remember on the morning show I always listened to, they brought in a new host and they were chit chatting with her talking to her about her experience so far and one of the things she said, you guys are so quite when the mics are off!! At first, it did not make sense to me and couldn't imagine it, but one of the guys said to her something along the lines of, we're saving it all till when the mics are rolling. Makes sense. They earn their money to talk, so talking when the Mics are off is sort of wasted money. Like throwing dollar bills.
