I was lucky enough to read a diary of a woman who did get involved in the battles that happened around her home. She did write that she "strongly desired" to be with the young men.
People don’t change do they? They want to support their families. They have likes and wants and strong feelings of revenge for the death of their boy friends or husbands.

I think those families were held responsible for making those girls feel like they have no choice in their life except to be a slave to her husband
