- *Correction at 08:57 the American Civil War was not the first war photographed. It was actually the Mexican/American War in 1846. Then the Crimean War in 1854-1856
The American Civil War Museum located in Richmond, Virginia is a state of the art and immersive experience. The museum chronicles this difficult time in our history starting at the beginning of the war. As you progress through the museum you see how the war evolved and the toll it took on our country. Coming from the UK I do find the American civil war quite fascinating. You're lucky to still have all those items for display. There's not many items left from the English civil war in the 1640s. There are a few items I'm aware of, but not that many. Good video well done.

I visited the national army museum in Chelsea years ago. From what I remember it had a few new model army artifacts like the cavalry Brest plate, helmet and swords and infantry pikes and the old musket that you had to fire with a fuse. Really interesting to see things from nearly 400 yrs ago
I find it fascinating to but what worries me is the fact that there is no mention of the British soldiers who fought for the Confederacy. In fact 50,OOO British men immigrated from the UK because they believed that that it was in their interest to do so

There is always something to learn with all of the rich and fascinating history America has to offer, the civil war being just one part of that history.
America was smart keeping so much of its history preserved: ie buildings, artefacts etc, for future generations to see and learn from.I like you, love to see the uniforms.

Im an aussie and have always been fascinated by the American civil war,especially on the confederate side,the rebs did very well to keep the war going as long as they did,were always up against a better trained, well equipped army of the Potomac.if they persevered with ambush tactics and defended on good ground,they may well have won or at least pushed the yankees to agree to terms. Brave men on both sides

Defense always had a significant advantage.
There is the Texas Civil War museum in Ft Worth. Looks similar to the one in this video but includes more artifacts and uniforms. It also includes a very large section of women's apparel during the Civil War. Most of the military uniforms include a large picture of the soldier who wore it. A few are missing sleeves (arms) where they were hit by cannon fire. The one thing that stood out was how small the clothes for the soldiers and the women were.
I’ve heard that’s a great place to visit. I’ll definitely try and make it there. Seeing the pictures of the soldiers add a new element no doubt. Thanks for sharing.
I stopped there myself a few years ago. I remember pulling up in the parking lot and thinking how good could this be? When I got inside we had to sit through a short film. And then let into the museum. Man was I wrong more stuff than you could ever take in for one trip. The one that I thought was memorable was the confederate sharpshooter rifle. For a mere $1,000 dollars in the 1860’s. I even had to go back and see it again a year or two later because I didn’t have a camera to get a picture. Where else are you going to see a used cigar from Grant.?
I visited there also three years ago. I heard they're closing it in December. Because they didn't celebrate Black History so I guess they're being punished. I also thought all the uniforms were very small
Our junior HS history class visited here, Jamestown and Washington DC in 1967. I would like to take that trip again. It was highlight of my experience.

I love the Tredegar museum. When I arrived in Richmond in 1989 the Tredegar Iron Works where they produced Confederate cannons, was just a gigantic pile of bricks, and they restored it to it's original splender, and built the museum into it.
Yes, it’s a fantastic place. They did a great job restoring the building. Really enjoyed my visit there.
The White House of the Confederacy (1201 East Clay Street) was built in 1818 for Dr. John Brockenbrough and was designed by Robert Mills, one of America' greatest architects. The City of Richmond leased the home to the Confederate government for use as the president's mansion. After the war, the house was turned into a public school and later was nearly demolished.
It was turned into a museum in 1896, with each Confederate state (plus Maryland and Kentucky) given its own room. Each room had a docent to oversee the state's Civil War relics that were displayed inside glass vitrines. Today the mansion has been restored to the way it looked when Davis lived there.
Richmond is a fascinating city!
That's only one of general Lee's hats I have one that he personally owned as well it's been grandfather down and it's not for sale

I am a huge Civil War fan. I visited the battle field at Petersburg a few weeks ago when I was there for a VA appointment. Never knew thus museum was in Richmond. I'll definitely have to stop by next time I'm in Richmond. Excellent video by the way.

A very informative book about women soldiers in the Civil War is, "They Fought Like Demons" by DeAnne Blanton and Lauren M. Cook. There were more than I ever thought there was.

General Pender died from a ruptured artery in his leg from a shell fragment during the battle of Gettysburg. He later bled out during surgery.

Another fun fact is that most of the senior leadership on both sides of the civil war, and even some other notable junior-senior officers on the army side were almost all fought between West Point graduates. R.E. Lee vs. Grant, president of the confederacy Davis, JEB Stuart, even general pender speaking of which. All west pointers

1965 I visited Richmond Va. w my mom. We visited the City Museum and as many Civil War Museums as possible. It was a major deal for me because I was fascinated by the history of the war. And my Aunt and Uncle took us to the Smithsonian Museums that weekend before we left to go back home . One of the best weeks of my life. My mom was so sweet and I’m sure she could have used a restful vacation to recover from the walking we did all week.

I'm from UK and don't know everything about our civil war ,but what I do know in comparison is the hatred between the north and south in your civil war far surpassed that of Britain's ,there will be many reasons I think but the main one being UK's civil war contained many different nationalities and wasn't as straightforward as USA ,the battle that always gets me is Gettysburg and all that wastfull loss of life ,but also the bravery and will of the southern soldiers second to none ,glory glory hallelujah brave souls your names go marching on forever 🇬🇧
Gettysburg is one example of the carnage of this horrible war. Read about Shiloh, Chickamauga, and Franklin also. The soldiers of both sides suffered beyond anything we can comprehend. And if bullets and artillery weren't enough, diseases like dysentery and typhoid could just as easily kill you. Remember, medical care was still primitive at this time. If a surgeon so much as sterilized his instruments before an amputation, it was very much the exception and not the rule.
It definitely was a brutal war and at times both sides committed terrible atrocities towards one another. Gettysburg is one of many bloody battles throughout this conflict. I don’t know much about the English Civil wars. Something I’d like to change.
@@ProjectPast1565 I'd advise you to go back in time to our civil war ,again id say so different to yours in many ways , obviously youv never had a king so no royalists and of course the other side parliamentarians fighting for a republic ,which obviously they won and Cromwell was lord protector but then ended up being hanged by the king's family and back to a monarchy ,there was certain parts of the country that supported both sides ,again not as clear cut as yours .

Close but no cigar. the first war to be captured on camera was the Crimean War of 1853. I agree with other comments, I lost count of the number of times i heard the word "cool", but hey, the guy was indicating his sincere enthusiasm and it was all very spontaneous.
Yeah I put that correction in the description awhile back. In fact, upon further investigation, the Mexican/American war was actually the first war photographed. Obviously not in the scale of the Crimean or civil wars.

Thank you for this effort in showing us the Civil War Museum. It obviously has some of the best existing relics from that war. Perhaps in the future, the narrator could give his commentary as an after production edit to the video, as several mistakes were noted in the monologue. Recurring: It's not Calvary, it's cavalry. Not Appomattox, but Appomattox Court House. The Constitution doesn't grant rights, it recognizes them, and prohibits the government from infringing on them.

According to the statistics shown at the end about one in five of those who served died in the Civil War. A far higher percentage than in any other American war. Credit new technology and old tactics as well as appalling sanitation and medical practices. These statistics are astounding!

I found the epitaph sad. It was more than a fight about slavery and white supremacy, it was also the economy. No matter how you slice it, supremacy is wrong.

I was there in 2012 and the museum was so much better then. A lot more artifacts then compared to this display.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions but I do believe they rotate exhibits and artifacts to show a different topics and battles throughout the war.

I’ve never seen those 2 types of carbines especially with a telescopic sight on them. It’s was pretty interesting to see all the different variations. Way different than the standard sharps and Spencer carbines.

The surrender was done by a general who was friends and college buddies with Sherman and Grant who both owned slave while Lee owned no slave. When Grant decided to run for the office of the president he had to basically force Sherman to free his slaves 2 years after the traitorous surrender by Lee. Lee never had his heart in the idea of the tenth amendment. Lee was a federal guy that obviously believed that a federal government should rule supreme. All southern born and raised should ask themselves if having a federal government ruling supreme to the states is a good thing every time April 15th rolls around. The American constitution is just a piece of paper that’s only observed when it benefits the elitist career Politican’s and every single democrat. It’s strange how the political party’s have changed since the civil war. Democrats are today a pro socialist big controlling government party while the republican party that was responsible for the invasion of the CSA are the small federal government that has limited powers giving supreme power to the states. The party of Lincoln switched and the party of Robert E. Lee the democrats switched. Strange, I’d bet if Lincoln could have seen the problems he would cause the union today he would have never invaded a sovereign nation. The only way for the American continent avoid another bloody civil war is to separate and divorce, let the blue liberal dominated socialist states have their own country that’s independent from the RED states and understand The new union of red states will never grant them any aid whatsoever. True Americans are so sick and tired of blue states establishing laws that affect them that they are millions hoping for a leader to rise up and lead a true and armed insurrection.

Please before you put something on the internet do your research. The cannon was a 6pd James Rifle, the Round you had shown was not canister it was called a shell two different rounds. If the museum has signs up stating what you said about those the museum is wrong. Direct your attention to feld artillery books of the civil war and others near that period

I used to be a member Museum Confederacy back in the 80s I guess they went politically correct I gave several donations to restore the White House and the Confederacy I was there for the grand opening in 1988 very disappointed all the carpetbaggers in Northern Virginia destroying our beautiful monuments and history

No they won't close it they'll just woke the hell out of it changing the theme to better underscore the black experience. I will never forgive what the darkies (WOKE INDIVIDUALS) demanded of Richmond........... to pull down all the Monuments on Monument Ave. They could have moved them or change the tabletted historical contextual content/information, or added to the historical context......but NOT pull the statues down. The darkies (WOKE PEOPLE) aren't going to be able to revise history no matter how hard they try.
