    6:00 What i think is, they want to avoid stress in the pins holding the liftingarms in place. But at one point, you have to aviod the gridfin of the booster, thats where the sideswing comes into play.

    • @tomv5782
      @tomv5782 8 місяців тому +3

      Concur. It's likely the more offset the ship is during a lift, the more stress it puts on the carriage system, so they only lift as far "off center" as absolutely necessary.

    I always thought the jog the chopsticks do during lift was to keep the arms as close to center as possible during the lift. When it gets close to the grid fins, the arms need to swing out a little bit to get good clearance and then swing back in once above the grid fins.

    • @adamcheney3421
      @adamcheney3421 8 місяців тому +1

      I think this is it, and I have a theory about why it is necessary...
      When the arms are lifting, there is a rotational moment between the top and bottom hinges of the chopsticks. If the chopsticks are right in the centre, the plane of this moment falls orthoganally through the cars on the main rail on the ship side of the tower - the force vector on the car behind the top hinge is directed orthogonally outward relative to the rail and on the bottom hinge the force vector is orthogonal towards the rail. As soon as the arms move away from the centre, the plane of rotational moment changes and the force vectors move more to the side - I assume the carriage mechanism is not as resistant to these force vectors, so they are minimising the time spent in these positions.
      Hopefully this is just an abundance of care until they understand how the forces are resisted by the carriage mechanism when the arms are off-centre...

    I was thinking about the WDR, and i realised it doesnt make much sense at all. The point of a WDR is to test everything as if it were a launch day, but stop at engine ignition. If the WDR goes well, why not just light it right then and there? Why not make every WDR a launch attempt, but if something goes wrong, transition to a WDR. After all, WDR's are expensive and require an evacuation. Why go to all the trouble of that if you dont even get to launch?

      Agreed. It’s a waste of time and creates more room for errors/damage to any part of the equipment when you have to destack and restack for arming the FTS. One of the emphasis points for SpaceX has been “minimize opportunities for problems” and the current system certainly doesn’t meet that criteria.

    @nasaspaceflight at what point in the 3 a week starship production do we see a new road or rail system installed next to the highway and SPMTs?

    • @briangodfrey7424
      @briangodfrey7424 8 місяців тому

      I'm curious how a 3/wk production schedule would fit with their permitting as an R&D site, only. I was under the impression that they would transfer the larger scale production and launch schedules to Florida once they've got a usable rocket.
      Regarding rail, the SPMTs have adequate capacity for Starship and much greater maneuverability. If they were going to build a special transportation system between the two sites, it seems like they would just build a dedicated roadway alongside the existing one. But given the wetlands on either side of the existing road, I wouldn't really expect to see either. What they have works adequately for an R&D facility.

      I guess it was quicker to get operational with the tents. Also, it may have allowed them to figure out exactly what they needed from a Star factory. Honestly, it does seem like they are very wasteful when it comes to ships/boosters, and structures. There will come a point when the design must be frozen. Mass production can not occur without a frozen design. Of course, they are a long way away from that.

    • @ericbainter826
      @ericbainter826 8 місяців тому +1

      Once the explosives are installed “things get real” and I suspect by their safety plan access to anywhere near the pad is strictly limited, which would inhibit other operations and maintenance. You wouldn’t want any more people than necessary To get the thing actually launched around the explosives. So installing explosives is the last thing before actual flight prep. By terms of their license “pre-flight ground operations” begin when the explosives are installed.
      But you’re right, they should have a more elegant way of installing the explosives and arming them.

    • @SpontaneousIntrospections
      @SpontaneousIntrospections 8 місяців тому +1

      @@ericbainter826 Except that every stack is MORE DATA and while SpaceX is in the prototyping stage, everything at Starbase is good practice for future operations, and the best part, is no part. Re-stacking makes every one after that, more efficient and NOT trying to re-invent new protocols and work methods for the handling of explosives, around fueled rockets, will probably save SpaceX huge amounts of time and headache if they just use the established protocols for FTS handling until it might be advantageous to look at alternatives.
