Very happy to see that your recent hospital adventure hasn’t knocked you off your schedule. That is a great collection of Tokusatsu classics. Seems like Sonny Chiba was to Toei what Akira Takarada was to Toho, a talented young actor and handsome leading man who got a lot of work and never disappointed.
You may have the only copy in Australia. Growing up with kid anime like Kimba The White Lion, Speed Racer, Battle Of The Planets, and any live action like Ultraman. It's always a joy to see.
Love the New York accent on the kids in Prince of Space. Golden. This channel is like a relaxing safe zone. This is a fantastic collection of my favorites.
Glad you were able to get ahold of this set Terry! 🥳 Was really excited for this release, since it’s the first time most of these films have been officially released with subtitles 😳 On that note, I was disappointed Terror Beneath the Sea wasn’t subtitled, the only reason I could think of was that since it was a Japan/US co-production, maybe there was some licensing issue? Seems like a stretch, i know, but the US connection is the only thing that differentiates that film from the others that i’m aware of 🤔 Also, TBTS did have one previous physical release (though a rather limited one) by Dark Sky Films on DVD in 2005 🙂
@@terrytalksmovies That is true, and it’s just a minor quibble in an otherwise excellent set 😁 Whatever the case, i hope this is well-received enough for Shout to consider future similar releases, there’s still a bunch of vintage toku out there to explore! 🚀
Many years ago I bought a budget two movie DVD that featured the original Gamera movie and included The Magic Serpent. I love the movie. It’s well done and great fun. The battle between the giant toad and the dragon is as good as any giant monster brawl of that era and still looks great.
Of all of these movies, it was "The Magic Serpent" that was shown here in Southern California (KTLA Channel 5), with great regularity back in the 1970s. In the AIP dubbed version, the dragon had the roar of Godzilla, while the giant toad had the roar of Rodan! With this set, it will be interesting to finally watch the Japanese language version.
Prince of Space was at the centre of my favourite MST3K episode. However, I've watched it neat a couple of times, and it's a weirdly atmospheric and fun little movie.
@@terrytalksmoviesHe sure was. Have you ever heard of Planet Film Distributors? I feel like you may have mentioned them in a video before because the name sounded familiar when my best friend posted about this movie called Devils of Darkness. Does any of that ring a bell? Or am I up a creek? 🤷
Oh, my God...Invasion of the Neptune Men. I saw it on MST3K about 30 years ago...I remember them joking during the opening credits and we see a matte painting of the earth with continents and one looked like a liver...one of the characters said, "Hey, look! It's Oliver Reed's liver encased in lucite!" I found it on UA-cam last year and watched it. What rubbish but fun!
Just saw The Magic Serpent and really enjoyed it. I saw Watari, Ninja Boy recently and it's also a lot of fun. I'll take models, forced perspective, obviously staged sets and practical explosions over CGI especially for these films. It enhances the storybook quality of the movie IMHO 😊
Fun fact about Golden Bat; there's an Italian dub of the anime called Fantaman which kinda makes the character sound like the creepy mascot for a fruit flavored soft drink.
Thank you, Terry. All of those sound like a lot of fun. Pity that set is so hard to acquire. The fact that Sonny Chiba is in three of the movies, does make the set very desirable indeed. It really needs someone like Umbrella to step up and licence it.
@@terrytalksmovies Yes, I see your point. It really bugs me, though, when companies do this - "We've made that thing that everyone has been clamouring for - here it is, all bright and shiny - but here's the thing; we've only made 250 of them, so good luck finding one, ha ha ha!"
The Magic Serpent has an interesting history. It began as an illustrated novel published serially in the early 19th century. It was then adapted as a kabuki play showing off all the mature kabuki stagecraft. The movie is a very loose adaptation of the play. I enjoy it a lot.
I might convince myself to cough up the bucks for this set simply on the strength of getting a decent copy of The Magic Serpent. Ninjas and kaiju and samurai, oh my! Actually, Terror Beneath the Sea was available (although it was quite a few years ago) on a good quality DVD, from an outfit called Dark Sky Films. I'd already planned to give my copy another watch sometime soon. Thanks for the nudge!
I guess you're a bit down on MST3K. I love that show but I do enjoy the films on their own too. Seen both prince of Space and Invasion of the Neptune Men there. I saw Terror Beneath the Sea on video. Wacky 60s film. I think I've seen The Magic Serpent, dubbed on US TV. Doesn't the hero get his head cut off but he can reattach it? Got ninja stuff and kaiju stuff. Cool. I have a set of the Daimajin films, those are a lot of fun and spooky.
Really those crazy movies all look like fun. We have Golden Bat but haven't watched it yet. I gotta see that last one with the flame toad and the water dragon. All the best Terry and Geek Girl @@terrytalksmovies

I'm implacable. 😉 Sonny Chiba was such fun as an actor. I love the Streetfighter movies, too.

Yep. Pissed off my grandfather that I was watching Japanese media, but too bad.

Sometimes the companies just go with the available master copies. TBTS is an ancillary movie, a bonus rather than part of the main features.

The Magic Serpent really worked for me. Total entertainment.

The original voices always lift any of these movies. Dubbing diminishes the acting.

Taken at their own level, they're all incredibly entertaining.
I've never seen Sonny Chiba so young. That's amazing in and of itself!
He was a good looking rooster alright.

Any movie with Sonny Chiba in it is automatically 300% cooler.

I don't mind how the SFX are done as long as they serve the story. That's always crucial.

It was very creepy when I was a kid, but we loved it.

It would be great if they did, but I'd also be pissed off because I paid a premium for it. 😀

It's the best of the collection. Full tilt fantasy adventure.
Those Japanese movies are fun. Your video brought back some memories.
I'm happy you enjoyed the video. 😀

A steel boomerang decapitates the hero but he doesn't die. He laughs.
Feel free to cover more of this kind of content... I love it 🙂
Thanks! These movies are such fun to cover and to watch.
Fantastic movies, thanks a lot Terry!
My pleasure. They're all worth the effort to seek out and watch.
