How To Blur the Background in Lightroom 2024

Historically, blurring the background in a photo using Adobe Lightroom has been difficult. Fortunately, Adobe seems to have gotten the message and released the Lens Blur feature in Lightroom. In this video, I’ll explain how to use the Lens Blur panel to blur the background in a photo and how to use some of its features for even better results.

You can do something similar in Photoshop using the Neural Filters but I've not seen this in other package yet. It will be interesting to see if anyone else goes down this route.

@@RobinWhalley Using ON1 Phot RAW with the updated AI selection tool method and adding a blur filter and then inverted gives a sort of blurred background but not as good as the Lightroom method.

@@stevejacob4375 The problem is that it doesn't generate a depth map like Lightroom. This means everything receives the same level of blur which makes it look false.

I'm impressed how fast LR Lens Blur is on your system. On my 7 year old system it takes ages to render the blur. 😭

I'm using a Mac Studio M2. It must be all the Neural Cores on the M2 chip.

No. Affinity Photo doesn't have an equivallent depth map. You need to use a more manual solution. I'm not saying what as it may be in a future video.

True optical blur does look better but then you don't always have that option.
