After the first winter they stopped using the electric heating of the road surface due to cost and operational difficulties and reverted to using road salt, from that day this structure was doomed as the years of salting have destroyed not only the concrete but the reinforcing, expansion joints, shockers, drainage and the now replaced aluminium safety fencing, Gateshead Council have known for at least 45 years this day was coming but stuck their heads in the sand.It was only ever the rump of a grander scheme that was abandoned when the full cost implication and impending structural difficulties with old mine workings became apparent. Plan B is the existing Central Motorway through Newcastle. McGuiness our erstwhile First Lady has proclaimed she will find the funding for the present works, what she really means is the community charge payer of Gateshead will foot the bill.I spent 20 years maintaining this structure in the 70s /80s and as the works were carried out overnight or week- ends we called it our Golden Mile.

@@williamrichardson9475 interesting read thank you for sharing.
If this flyover was anywhere within the m25, it’d have been totally replaced in the blink of an eye

It's a good video and I am surprised at the damage to it what you have shown. Never seen that amount of damage on the news

All down to bad maintenance and regular inspections. Replace the dodger pillar. Job done.
