100% of the blame on Gateshead Council for not maintaining their assets.

After the first winter they stopped using the electric heating of the road surface due to cost and operational difficulties and reverted to using road salt, from that day this structure was doomed as the years of salting have destroyed not only the concrete but the reinforcing, expansion joints, shockers, drainage and the now replaced aluminium safety fencing, Gateshead Council have known for at least 45 years this day was coming but stuck their heads in the sand.It was only ever the rump of a grander scheme that was abandoned when the full cost implication and impending structural difficulties with old mine workings became apparent. Plan B is the existing Central Motorway through Newcastle. McGuiness our erstwhile First Lady has proclaimed she will find the funding for the present works, what she really means is the community charge payer of Gateshead will foot the bill.I spent 20 years maintaining this structure in the 70s /80s and as the works were carried out overnight or week- ends we called it our Golden Mile.

If this flyover was anywhere within the m25, it’d have been totally replaced in the blink of an eye

They knew it had a life span of 60 years when they built it. All part of the greater plan for 2030, piss the average motorist off just enough to make him or her rethink their future transport options. With a little help from the government nudge units they will make you believe it will be better for your health and the environment if you just ditch your car and either cycle, walk or use public transport.

All down to bad maintenance and regular inspections. Replace the dodger pillar. Job done.

The design looks a bit odd, a lot of deck and very few cross beams with rather slim supporting colums that must be very heavily loaded. Annual inspections with regular joint replacement would have been vital. Design life for such structures would be 100 years, not enough maintenance would halve it.

The Liebour controlled Gateshead Council are 100% to blame for this
It's deliberately not maintained this vital A road for decades, ignoring the surveys it claims to have had done
Planned scheduled maintenance would have prolonged the life of this road for up to 100 years
This along with the wanton destruction of the town centre is nothing short of a criminal act against the people of Gateshead and the wider region
The pie in the sky plan for a tree lined boulevard for walkers and cyclists is a total waste of tax payers cash, bringing nothing to the local economy apart from more debt
Gateshead is falling apart under the control of Liebour, fly tipping and poor maintenance of its infrastructure and services are rampant
Time to vote these charlatans out permanently

Truth is way too much money is spent outside our country, this must stop and we need to invest here, our infrastructure, services and society is crumbling.

Danger of collapsing? but they still allow traffic underneath it at BOTH roundabouts? WHO'S FOOLING WHO?
Real reason it's been neglected over the last 15 years and have wanted it demolish in that 15 years is because they want to sell the land off to private house builders, but those builders would struggle to sell house that have a massive flyover at the bottom of the properties garden, Gateshead Council have been unable to sell the land for that reason, all other ex council estates that have been demolished in the last 30 years, and there's lots of them, have been sold and built on within a years of demolition.
