  • Master Thatcher David Wood makes the rolls for the ridge and fixes them in place. This will form support the ridge covering.

    What's the gauge on lathes,does it differ on a re-cover, not new roof

      We were re-instating a roof so we had new fireproofing and lathes as a matter of course. The lathes are 1.5 inches wide by 1inch depth. Thatching could be carried out on existing lathes as long as the roof construction meets modern building regulations.

    How long does a new roof last before redoing ?

      The ridge is redone every 10 years. The main part of the roof last about forty years before it needs attention.

    Reeds in Turkey are tougher! Does it make any difference in thatching?
