- Getting the pictures you want in Bird and Wildlife Photography isn't easy. How do you find wildlife to photograph? How do you improve your photography? It's things like this that we, as photographers, are always dealing with. But honestly, it comes down to a few simple things: Repetition and constant, consistent effort. It's pretty much that simple.
In this week's video, I take you along with me as I get back out in my floating blind (hide) to get some very specific images of some Ducks that I have in mind. As I was photographing these beautiful birds, I had a surprise encounter with a Mink! But this wasn't just any Mink, there was something very different and special about it! You'll have to tag along this week to find out what :)
As a professional wildlife photographer, I'm always trying to improve my photography and create exciting images that tell a story, or help the viewer feel a sense of wonder and awe when they look at a picture. This is a constant goal of mine and one that will never be complete. I'm constantly trying to refine my photography, learn as much as I can and improve on a regular basis. Follow along this week as we discuss this process and have a ton of fun with the beautiful wildlife I was able to photograph from my blind!
As always, I strive to be as respectful to the animals I photograph and observe as I possibly can. As a professional wildlife photographer, it's my responsibility to respect the beautiful animals I photograph, I encourage you to do the same.
I still have some 2023 Wildlife Calendars available for order. Please help support me and my channel by picking one up today, thanks in advance! www.jimmybreit...

Glad you got the mink...that was special!
I'm glad too, he's been a load of fun since then too 😁 Thanks and have a great day!
What a great surprise for that unique mink to show up. It looked pretty healthy. Another fine video Jimmy.👍👍
Thanks a bunch, Terry! It was so nice to see it, I've spent quite a bit of time looking for him since then. He sure is sneaky though, but things are starting to look promising!
Super find - that mink really was something very special!! And yes the mallards are a lot nicer in sunshine - at one angle blue, at another green. Thanks for taking us along! (It really wasn't repetition - mink!!) My goal picture - kingfisher fishing-diving, but it probably won't happen soon...
Thank you, Ott, I always appreciate the support! It's so neat how the colors change depending on the light that hits them. Truly beautiful birds! The Mink was quite fun and has been since 😁 When you get your Kingfisher diving, I'd love to see it. I've dreamt about the same thing, but I'm not even close 🥴
EXTRAORDINAIRE 🎬🎥 merci mon Ami!!!
Thanks so much!
Another great and informative video Jimmy, the footage of the blond mink was extra special. Those kinds of finds can make the day in the cold very special and worthwhile. Good luck in your search to find him again, it won't be easy but I know you have the patience and will probably be successful. Also great Mallard action, a very common and beautiful bird in our area but also a lot of fun if you can find them being active. Have a great week and thanks again for sharing!!
Thanks so much, Keith! I was so thrilled when I saw the little fella 😁 I've been spending a ridiculous amount of time looking for him since, but he sure is a sneaky little guy. It's been a fun challenge so far! Thanks again, hope you're doing well!
Such a fantastic surprise for the mink to show up! You always capture beautiful footage of the animals, I loved how the pictures turned out!
Thanks so much! Yeah, that Mink was such a fun surprise! I've spent a lot of time looking for him since, but he sure is a sly one 🥴
Hey Jimmy. Another nice video. Super information mixed with wildlife. Well done. Greets Stefan
Thanks so much, Stefan, I always appreciate your kind words! Good luck out there in your own explorations!
Wow, the footage of the interaction of the mink and ducks! I am not sure I would have been able to maintain my composure. I've been trying to get out to Onondaga Lake to photograph Eagles but they are a bit far out on the lake as weather has been unusually mild here in NY. During the week I've been filming the birds on the trees around the feeder, as evidence in today's episode. Can't wait to see what else you have been up to! Each time you go out even if it is a same species everything will be slightly different so I don't mind
Thanks a bunch, Julie! Needless to say I was pretty excited! This winter has been so odd. It's so intense in some areas and incredibly mild in others. The important part is that you're out there looking and trying. Keep up the awesome work and best of luck to you!
I see you gave up on the Mallards when the mink showed up!! I have to confess I would have done the same thing. Superb footage.
Haha, I guess it was pretty obvious 😆 I love all wildlife, but some animals take priority I guess!
Great footage!!
Thanks!
The excitement of seeing an unusual animal when not expecting it really makes all the 'average' days pay off.
I couldn't agree more, especially when it's a mustelid 😁
Beautiful video, New to photography myself and hope to one day get some Really beautiful photos like this of some ducks. Great stuff man
Thanks so much for watching. Best of luck on your photography journey. Put the time in and you'll get the results!
Wow!!! What great moment!! I thought it took the duck!!
Thank you 😊 I was wondering if it'd go for the Duck, but they took off too quickly. Maybe next time!
@@JimmyBreitenstein oh yes, msybe next time!! Good luck!
You hit on some things I'm just learning. Right now my targets are eagles and owls. Eagles aren't to hard to find in my area, but an eagle with good light and interesting background?! The more I go out the more opportunities I find myself getting. Gotta be persistent.
You said it right! Persistence really is the key to getting the photos you want and it will lead to so many fun opportunities in between! Best of luck to you in getting your Eagles and Owls!
Really great images. It doesn’t really matter to me if you shoot the same species. Your content is wonderful and your production continues to improve. Thank you for getting out there and all of your hard work.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! I don't mind repetition either, but I know some people tend to be a little more picky 😆 Thanks again, always appreciate it!
Merci Jimmy pour la vidéo, le vison est magnifique, tu as beaucoup de chances d'en avoir dans ta région, au Luxembourg ils sont très rare, bonne continuation pour la suite de tes vidéos, bye et Merci.
Thanks so much, I always appreciate your comments! Yeah, I'm lucky to have a healthy population of Minks in my area, they're always so much fun to see and photograph. Have a wonderful week!
How close can you get to these birds? Some our more wary then others but a mallard is normally one of the more wary ducks. I’m sure most of it comes from a good camera but just how close do you get?
It really varies from area to area. Mallards tend to be the most flighty Ducks around the blind, but even so I can usually get within 30ft or so. Again, really depends on the bird and the area.
@@JimmyBreitenstein thanks just wondering
what do you do if you step off into deep water ?
Try not to take it all down with you... Honestly, there really is a big risk involved when using a blind like this, you have to be careful with each step.
Where did you get your floating blind?
I made it at home 😁
Your mink is leucistic. A condition of lacking pigment but not albino.
Thanks for the info. I've been researching his coloring myself and have a theory or two of my own. It's just so hard to tell when I don't get the best views of him. Thanks again, really appreciate it!
