This was an awesome surprise. I've been following this game for a while now without much deep dive content, and this has made me so excited once again for it
Thor, you interviewing other game devs is some of my favorite content that you make. You provide an educated persepctive and the devs seem to be more comfortable coversing with you beacuse of your background
Thanks for the great interview Thor. It's really nice to watch a talk with a dev that gets a bit in the nitty gritty of things. I'm not in the games industry, but I do work as a dev and it's really interesting to see this.
I love these talks with other game devs. Thor having a platform for these guys who provide so much fun for all of us is awesome. These guys should get more credit and praise for how hard they work and how much time they put in to give us something fun to play with.
I played test server over and over on Ultima Online, it wiped regularly. Not to test anything, but because the server was so much fun when it first came up. I really like the sound of weekly wipes, but partial, and the rush for discovery. That rush for discovery and rewarding efficiency is really appealing.
Worm riding would work great as a mass transport of resources out of the Deep Desert, assuming there isn't already an analog. Signal surrounding enemies, maybe a thumper alerts everyone you're trying to pull out with a cache, PVP ensues.
Wow, thank you so much for this video! My husband and I are big fans of Dune and have played and enjoyed most games by Funcom. I have been keeping up with Dune Awakening since it was revealed, I believe 2022. I have been really on the fence about this game, not sure I want to play it but at the same time it is very compelling. I just got an invite to play the closed beta and after watching this video I am much more hyped for this game and am going to give the beta a spin!
The process he describes in the beginning is basically SAFe. a lean business case, being refined by an Epic Owner with a System Architect with the Tech Leads of every team involved with a feedback loop from the Business Owner that created the case.
Commenting at 26:19 About the ornathopters. I think there should be sandstorms in the desert that roll through that make flying nearly impossible. There should be a "clearing" zone on either side of the sandstorm wall as it approaches. In that zone you can fly with extreme difficulty as the winds and debris threaten to make you crash by doing wild things to your controls. In the heart of the storm, if you are flying you get even worse control input malice, and your vehicle starts to rapidly take damage. That way fliers aren't the end-all-be-all of traversal, they should also have low storage capacity/ carry weight vs ground vehicles of the same size.
I am still shocked I haven't seen a survival game that does PvP enabled by action economy. I know blockgame has a timer, but it becomes negligible once you start earning, and the timer on that is more stress than fun for me, but like when PvP is opt-in I find everyone is having the most fun, so it's cool to see that PvE zones exist for the peeps who can't stomach harming other people's gameplay.
I won't lie, I wasn't really that hyped for this game after seeing one of the gameplay videos, but wow.. that is no longer the case. The thought they are putting into the gameplay loop and end game is reeaallly interesting. I'm dangerously hyped now.
49:40 - 500(ish?) hours to unlock all the skill trees, sounds reasonable. Sinking 500 hours into an MMO seems like a given, just to get started... if you're really invested into it.
There are parts of EVE I loved, but I would never recommend it to anyone without a big warning and usually after that none of my friends will play it. My nephew rage quit EVE and never spoke to me again.
Question for the creative director: Is there a cooldown on server rules? could people decide to make it full-loot pvp for all time, or is there a limit on how many times a server rule can be implemented before it goes on cooldown? Just an idea!
Great interview, l am wondering if funcom has any plans with Anarchy Online though, one of their oldest games , I love that game played it since 2006,wish they would make a modern version of it
The creative director needs to explain why Dune's developers are recycling content from conan exiles instead of delivering a new experience they claimed they were going to deliver.
I'm interested in becoming a penetration tester, focusing on web application penetration testing and bug bounty programs. Do you have any advice on the skills I should acquire to excel in this field?
Hi Thor. I like arcade racing games a lot and I would love to find out more about the reboot potential of racing games IP from SingleTrac (Twisted Metal, Jet Moto, Streak hoverboard). If you could someone track down an interview someone who worked at SingleTrac, GT Interactive, or Atari and talk about if there could be a spiritual successor to these racing games, I would gladly watch hours of interviews about this. (These IP s kept switching hands, it seems like every holder of these IP s sold their entire company)
it does, you've got: factions: Harkonen, Atreides (and iirc another one that hasn't been revealed for post-launch) Guilds: Player made Politics: power struggle between harkonen and atreides
Monetizzation? I like eve monetization. So there should be " real spice" that you can only get by harvesting it on the desert or buy ot from some other player. And the a "coam spice voucher" or sometin, this " spice" can only be used to pay tax and get influece but not for ability. These "spice coucher can only be created by buying them vith real money and can be sold or brought in the market player market for solari. The idea is like "real spice" is like owing an actual barrel of oil that you can smell touch or spill in the ground wile the choam voucher is like owning oil in the stock market. So the more of these vauchers get created the more ppl are willing to exchange "real spice" for vouchers to pay tax to upkeep theyr base as it vould be cheaper to do so. But the harvested spice will always keep it' s value as you can use to do more stuff If no body is buying vouchers with real money the ingame price of real spice vould go up thus creating an incentive to get vouchers to pay tax and get influence or just to sell it for a hig price but ofc a bit lower than real spice. They could also make it so that pay and influennce tax with real spice pose a logistical problem where you have to actually get the spice in an actual place and make sure it bot get lost or stolen wile with vouchers since they are bot physical obgect you can just use them like money in the banck and istantly pay for influence or tax with no neet of transporting anything
I will literally never buy another Funcom game. They leave their games buggy and incomplete on the regular. But they'll make plenty of paid DLC for those buggy and incomplete games.
I have mixed feelings about this. I'm a DUNE fan from the old days. Played Dune 2000 for countless hours, watched the movies, read the books. But... I'm a bit tired of all this survival games and the PvP extraction zone is a red flag for me, but I still love DUNE. I'm afraid this game won't be for me. 🥲 Edit: I do not like the fomo on the crafting.
While I was watching this, I'm right at the ad break, a thought crossed my mind that I don't have an answer to, and wondered if anyone here did. It doesn't really involve the game though. Like, how does ad revenue work on youtube. Let me be a bit more specific in my question though, so, I pay to bypass ads. I've heard that content creators get some portion of ad revenue, so by bypassing ads am I actually hurting the content creators, or do they get a portion of the income I provide to youtube to skip it?
But what with conan? I mean, i was playing conan since release, bouth a lot cosmetics. But as they remake systems over and over again, game become broken. Thrals broken, siptah not finished, pvp broken, npc broken. But they just remaking systems all over again breaking more. And now like 80% of their team jumped on dune. Nope, i am not going buy it. At least thnks for interview. But i do not buy it what this guy telling.
Its basically Conan Exiles, but its Dune.... not generally looking forward to it.... Tencent bought them, so of course their team grew. They got a huge influx of developers and money thanks to Tencent. But that also means Tencent completely owns them. Its not like Larian Studios where Sven and his wife still own 70% of the company and Tencent owns 30%.... so Tencent says "jump" to funcom and they jump.... Before I get to commenting on things said in the video. I just wanna say, Anarchy Online has so much potential. Unlike Conan or Dune universe, which were never designed for open world gaming/story telling, Anarchy Online was created from the ground up as a video game. Much like Warcraft was designed from the ground up as a video game. Adopting Warcraft the RTS into an MMO was relatively simple. Because they owned Warcraft, they could expand it infinitely. New items, weapons, armor, etc. They could easily make the world and lore work. When you have something like Conan or Dune, you can't just add content. You can't add new vehicles in Dune, you can't add new weapon types to Conan. Everything has to sort of sit with the lore of those preset universes. Anarchy Online has no preset universe OTHER THAN the things they already established with the first MMORPG. Which can be infinitely expanded upon. Since its a sci-fi game, they could develop a new planet, new zones, new monsters, etc. They could even have an expansion that allows players to return to the original planet in the first AO game! With new story elements as if the world actually progressed past the first game. There is literally unlimited potential in the AO universe. Back to complaining about the interview. LOL Around 6 minutes he mentions they wanted to make a new game but didn't want to hamstring Conan Exiles by making another Conan game because "conan is doing so well" so instead they decided to try and get dune.... WHAT?!?!?! YOU LITERALLY HAVE ANARCHY ONLINE IN YOUR REPERTOIRE!!!!! They could have literally made an Anarchy Online survival game or BETTER YET Anarchy Online 2.0 mmorpg, as I stated above my simple yet doable idea. 15 minutes. Talks about the PVP zone being wiped weekly. So that's their solution to Conan Exiles NEVER getting resets? LMAO. So they went from NEVER reset to WEEKLY resets. Facepalm. and yeah i heard him say the starter zone can be built in and wont reset. guess what people are gonna do? never build in pvp and only build in safe zone.... just lmao. the map system is a decent idea.... i had the same for my game idea's i share online. its a fun thing. being able to sell or trade maps with people. because the worst thing was exploring something and your friends have no way of seeing your map except screen sharing. but also this idea is part of Stars Reach. Where when you have a player map for an area that has things marked off, having the map will give you bonuses. so there is a reason to have a map. like you might get a % increase in ore mining because you have a map that marks off the resource. its a great idea. we'll see how dune makes the maps matter. because just marking things isn't enough. i can find them myself by scanning since everyone can scan. there needs to be a benefit to make it more worth while besides sharing data with friends. I know the only benefit i see right now is sharing maps with friends, so each friend can explore a region solo and then all come back and share to get the complete finished map. speeding up the map making process, especially since weekly resets. which means team play will have a huge advantage over solo players..... which could be a bad thing. monetization. conan exiles is literally pay to win. its not just cosmetics. items you get off the battelpass legit have more damage than the basic versions of the same item! i made a particular sword which had 50 some damage because the materials to make it was easier than making the normal version you unlock when you level up. there is absolutely pay to win in conan exiles. hes a liar. but that's to be seen since they are 100% owned by tencent. and tencent loves pay to win and since they 100% own them, will force them to have pay to win. journey system? so its literally conan exiles. lmao. guarantee after the usual/typical initial burst of players, it drops after. and some from conan will quite conan and only play dune. some will go back to conan. and many who played neither who try dune will end up thinking it sucks. guaranteed. they should have made anarchy online 2.0. no box cost. $15/month fee. huge open world mmorpg with survival open world building aspects. because lets be honest, anarchy online already had "plots" you could own as a guild and create your own city. technology limited back then, adopt that idea to a modern system? imagine conan exiles style building but in the open world. owning plots, paying "rent" to the faction that owns it. very easy to make it work. and it would be way more fun to have open world living in an mmorpg. guilds would be able to buy multiple plots of land from the NPC faction that owns the land. so their rent cost would be higher but they can get more plots at a time. sure a normal solo player could own the same amount of plots, but might not be able to afford the monthy tithe to the NPC faction that owns the land. IN AO you would fight nodes owned by the other faction and take them over for your own faction. not a bad idea but also a little toxic. instead those node points should be hard set locations outside of player run land/cities. so sieging them matters, but doesn't harm the player by doing so. if players build their cities/homesteads in pvp zones, then and only then could they be raided. again the fair aspect of it all. build in safe zones to ensure your place doesn't get raided/destroyed. which is better for solo, guilds can't build in safe zones for posterity reasons. so many ways to make it fun. around 1 hour 10 minutes he mentions controlling nodes. and gaining rewards for owning them. literally a point from AO as I already spoke on. lmao. they should have just made Anarchy Online 2.0.....
It's Funcom. They've been doing bad stuff for almost 20 years now (and I mean that as a gamer). Whomever let them use the Dune IP should get fired instantly.
Control the Spice, Control the Server! Control the Spice, Control the Server!! THE SPICE MUST FLOW!!!
I read this in Chuckles voice.

Ok, I wasn't expecting this interview.
Very interesting so far... you should do more bud!
Thanks for the great interview Thor. It's really nice to watch a talk with a dev that gets a bit in the nitty gritty of things. I'm not in the games industry, but I do work as a dev and it's really interesting to see this.
good stuff - was a pleasure to connect you two and make this nerd chat happen :)

Best Dev interview I have seen in a long long time! To refreshing! 🤘🤘🤘
11:52 "it kills 99 out of 100 people that die there"
I know what he means but that got me to chuckle
75% of the time it works every time 😂
He said “which really kills like…you know…99 out of 100 people will die there”
This dev interview was amazing. Maybe we can get more in the future??
Lowkey hyped for dis one
easiest wishlist of my life. Sounds really cool!
I am soooo super pumped for this game. . . LOVE Funcom, love their previous games, love Dune, LOVE LOVE LOVE.
The videos so far haven’t gotten me very hyped, but I’m def more excited for it after this interview
I was a big fan of conan exiles a few years ago and I am super excited about this!! The teasers/trailers look absolutely amazing
I think that the third faction is House Corinno, given it's a faction to give balance to the landsraad + we've already seen Sardaukar
As someone who loves Dune and is studying to get into the game developement business. This is gold.
I just realized I got invited to the closed beta last month and missed the email. I hope I can still sign up
Great video! Hope to welcome ya into the D:A community Sune™ Had any ideas for a Dune-y innuendo guild name aha
Great interview! Very excited to play the game!
I never clicked a video so fast! LETS GO!!

Welcome in the simulation...
This happened to me with Darthmicrostransactions new vid

I lived in Age of Conan Unchained for 7 years. Loved that game!! Hope Funcom does it again.

Seems to be a small mix-up with the timestamps around about the self-host subject: It starts at 54:41, not 52:37

When I first heard about this game about 2 years ago, I had a gut feeling it would exceed expectations. Excited to find out if that is the case.
Ngl I thought this was the Dune RTS they announced, not a survival game.
With that said, I am absolutely going to check Dune:Awakening out!

Bene gesserit are an option? That's all I need to know. I'm in 💯
Lasgun + Shield...somewhere Gurney is turning to Paul, "I know where your father hid the family atomics..."
Dune 2 was the game that got me into RTS, and Dune from the 1990s was an awesome game as well, i am sadly the same age as him

From what he has said this game could be incredible.
These thumbnails are fucking fire 🔥
Amazing interview... very interesting even for a pipefitter like me.
Thank you for the interview with the dev 😲
I just wonder, how grindy the game will be 🤔
Great interview. I'm guessing the 3rd faction will be the Fremen
So you can extract resources and such from the desert back to the pve areas? And you can build in the pve areas?
Yes, you pay tax on your buildings in PvE areas
Let's go dune
I cannot express how hilarious it is that you keep using the same face for every thumbnail

Is anyone else worried that dune awakening will just be conan exiles dissappintment again?
I'm interested in becoming a penetration tester, focusing on web application penetration testing and bug bounty programs. Do you have any advice on the skills I should acquire to excel in this field?
My server rule. No pants.
I worried this game isn't gonna be friendly for single or coop players. Like big parts of the game could be rough
We have sandworms on rubi-ka. And those drop sandy piece of goo.

My only issue with the game is that it seems to use guns way more than you'd see in the universe.
Oh, lol, it sounds like the 3rd faction is the Corrino
bro you gotta use the hair in the thumbnails otherwise you look like general sam
LET THE SPICE FLOW
I cant wait for DUNE. Looking good, hopefully it doesnt turn out like ARK...
I want this in ps5

When are you going to finish heartbound?
i hate having to repair armor :( :( :(
OMG YES
I'm early this is wild
yeah yeah, all cool and stuff, but what about managing ESP and aimbot users? What anticheat? And is the game authoritative server-side?
Damn
If this game doesn't have factions, politics and guilds I'm out.
it does, you've got:
factions: Harkonen, Atreides (and iirc another one that hasn't been revealed for post-launch)
Guilds: Player made
Politics: power struggle between harkonen and atreides
Monetizzation?
I like eve monetization.
