Love mine, got two a few weeks ago Once you get some vocal talent in there belting it out The diode bridge shines, compression in general is something I seldom use much of if any going in But this comp is a thing of beauty when used sparingly with powerful vocalists, very impressive I guess I’m a Neve guy these days growing up I tried “something different” since everyone was Using Neve, talking early 70s for my age a lot of 80 series-1086, 8086 then class A 1073 ect. so I used whatever wasn’t popular looking that something, it worked out great using api, ssl, UA I know alot of the same go to Pieces but I liked using them in situations that had other engineers going “huh!” But they couldn’t argue with the results But there is no denying the Shelford especially as a pair for 2buss tasks and stereo tracking The smooth, clear, silky, pro vibe is different in the 21rst century and I’m loving what I’m getting out of these Neves! Since most modern radio play is trash, imho it’s a breath of old fresh air that might lite some fires
Im not even halfway thru this video & it’s amazing! So professional. Great voice over. Now i want 2 shelfords in my studio. So i can have a stereo pair 🙏. Im going to get my ams neve 88m interface. I can’t wait for that to come in.
Yeah - there is a lot of gear I'd love to review. I am pretty backed up with 10 more videos on gear I still need to get out before I even count the new stuff coming in.
Appreciate the brief history lesson you gave on the front of this video. It would also be nice to hear the compression with a male and female vocalist, as well as on kick, snare, and bass. Curious to know how transparent it is.
Thank you for the review! Loved the intro by the way. I mean, whoever watches the intro is already 70% close to buying it by the end, and 95% close to buying it by the end of the video. lol Which leads me to this comment; are you still enjoying it as much? do you still find it versatile? Any regrets of letting go of the Manley Core? Have you tried any BAE? Again, thanks for the video. It's helping me narrow down my decision.
Its magic...its tube its vinyl sounding ...punchy...its everything...dont think anyone needs anything else other than two shelfords...well described great video...thanks rupert...
Nice video - well produced and executed. It is interesting that SSL has been dramatically advancing and introducing an array of great products while Neve has relatively been left in the dust.
Thanks for watching Thomas. That's an interesting point. I think Neve has a different customer than SSL. I owned an SSL channel strip at the same time as the Neve and sold it and kept the Neve. It's personal preference, but for me it was all about the Neve sound.
How. Thanks for the great review. I also have the RME and have been feeling like it's a bit lack lustre. Funnily enough i was looking at potentially adding this Neve to hopefully give it some balls, character and life. Obviously the tone shaping makes a huge difference but if you're only using it as a preamp, will it make much difference to the RME alone? Obviously, that has some great preamps, so i wonder how much the Neve will add to that. Thanks
@@GreekAudioGeek yes i believe it does. So it will make a noticeable difference even before eq and compressor are engaged? I just had a heart breaking recording today where i just couldn't get a good sound into the RME. Maybe my taste has refined or something but i spent ages trying to get something that was not wanting to be got...
Thank you for the short cut details Fantastic explanation I love your specifics method , it’s very clear to the brain ❤️ so I would like to hear more deep details around the Shelford Channel Microphone Preamp from you if you don’t mind 🙏
Excellent video , very important information. Is there any setting for normal/extreme saturation on vocals on this unit and if yes, how would that could be done? Thank you for the video!

Try out the Pluso mics. Specifically their C12 version. Also-AKG C12 VR is an absolute unsung hero of a mic. Blind tested in our studio it gets chosen for vocals each and every time.
Try a Telefunken Mic. But like 4 and do a Shootout ( all capsules together Flat & no Comp nor Processing) you’ll find it. I didn’t care for the U87AI for $4K ... was looking just for my Vocals. So that’s why I went with “Shelford “. 👍
When I used to have a Neumann mic - I had one guy post on one of my videos "how did you get that Neumann to sound so good?" The secret was I used the EL9. :)
Yeah, its a tough call. The BAE sounds great as well and obviously, the 1176 is a classic. I was leaning towards the same combo as you but the Shelford truly looks like a beautiful piece. I would love to hear more of the compressor of the RN... run some vocals, and kick, snare, and bass through it and do a side to side comparison with the 1176.
Mike, I would love to own this for my home studio however price is out of budget. Is there a channel strip you’d recommend for home studio that would provide a closer clone sound?
Hello! I have an Empirical Labs Mike-E channel strip which is really, really good. How good? So good I'm going to be selling my Neve and replacing with the this!
Hey dude, thanks so much for your time an efforts. I see that you also have the SSL unit that has that distortion setting where you can choose which harmonics you want and how much,. I was looking at that very unit for vocals ...GREAT sounding vocals. What do you think abou tit compared to your Shelford? I need the best. By the way...I dig the red setting. That's that vintage mojo I guess huh?
Who else is not a big fan of the Neumann 102? I fell like it's a bit lifeless and lacking in body compared to the mic I have one order that will replace it.
Agreed - the SC adds some serious mojo. I purposely spoke much closer to the 102 in the intro to get a more dramatic sound, but it took numerous takes to get it just right. With the main video I try and have the flow of a normal conversation and keep re-takes to a minimum - unless I get tongue tied or have a complete blank moment. LOL. Thanks for the feedback!
The Background Music Is More Present That Your Voice. How Someone That Speak About Something Great And Supposed To Be a Musician Can Make That Ugly Error?
Yup - I agree. I'm not perfect. LOL. However please note I am not a musician and never claimed to be. I'm just an imperfect person who didn't apply enough compression in a couple of parts of the video. I will hang my head in shame for the rest of the day to atone for my mistake. LOL. Seriously - thanks for watching and commenting. I do appreciate it!
The Shelford Channel Strips are the ONLY channel strips I will keep until the day I die.

I need to find a way to link to the Logic Pro recording. The sound differences are much greater when listening to that than via UA-cam.
