I have now owned the shelford channel half a year now - and i gotta say, this thing is AMAZING! It got that open 1073 kind of sound but with a different kind of texture at the same time. I cant describe how much i love this thing!🥰
thanks for explaining everything - its not that i dont know my way around the components, its just great having a comprehensive explanation with no stone unturned and nothing left out
This video is right on time. I've had my Shelford Channel for almost one year and didn't know. 1. Using the -6 DB input with my Apollo Twin X for my condenser microphone. 2. Turn off your monitors before powering on your Studio Monitors. Definitely getting another power strip with a power switch for my monitors to keep by my foot. 3. The compression trick for low frequencies. My voice is deep with some low frequencies.
It’s a fabulously solid piece of gear. Keep in mind that you can use it as a POST processor and get fantastic results. If you are using an Antelope interface use the DB25 line inputs. Additionally make it a point to set your output and input trims with a tone generator from your DAW to get the ideal levels to take advantage of all the features of the Shelford Channels. I calibrated all of my outboard gear this way and it made all the difference in what I get out of that pricy gear. Had it not been for the man speaking on this video I never would have figured this out.
Hey man can you explain a bit more about how to calibrate those input and output trims with the generator ? I have a mono shelford and im distorting my pure 2 way before i get the wanted signal level sometimes!
@@dbzeroproduction1159 sure. I’ll make a fast and dirty video, and post it on my video channel and send you an alert when it’s up. It’ll be a day or two.
I have a shelford channel, and its an awesome piece of gear, and i had the doubts of using both outputs at the same time, i wasnt sure if that would be a safe thing to do recording wise thanks for this video
I understand , he mentioned to use the -6 for Apollo / most interfaces. Does this still apply even if you are fully bypassing the preamps in your Apollo ?
Yes, one of the biggest advantages of the shelford channel over the vintage designs is that with Silk out it is exceptionally low harmonic distortion, Better than 0.002% at 1Khz with no upper order distortion. But also, the silk is not fuzz distortion, it is subtle 2nd and 3rd order harmonic content which sounds warm and musical rather than "distorted", so much "clean" pop music would still likely benefit from Silk
@Rupert Neve Team, I was thinking to get a Portico 2 MBP for mix bus processor and at the same time for vocals while tracking. I have not found anyone talking about how is it for tracking vocals. What do you say ? Would love to see a video on that before purchase, if you can. Also without silk enabled, is the compression for mix bus is clean and transparent or also have the vibe and punch e.g SSL-G Bus/ API 2500 compressor ? Please make a new video for Portico MBP-2's compression quality on various sources. Official videos adds the confidence and inspiration. I am really interested to purchase this unit. Thanks!
The power button on the back has me worrying about being in my studio rack. Does it damage when I turn my furman on and off? Btw, I own 2 shelford channels
I’ve been using a Pyle power conditioner for my on off for 3 years now on two Shelfords, no problem. But...it has a soft ramp for power up so no spiking at power being turned on or off. The thing I like about the Pyle is each device can be powered up as needed, and you have Instant voltage reading with each device powering on or off. This can matter if you are using high draw devices like a VoxBox, MassivePassive, etc. I like to keep the voltage as strongly above 110 as I can.
Unless you're making serious rock and roll records a strip like this is way overkill. You should probably save your money and just get a decent interface and a few plugins.
@@Roman_andtheprey I’m going to use plugins, I won’t be using it for music so I got the focusrite claret and a cloud lifter with the Nob plus two microphones . Thanks for the tip.
@@robertmedina3982 I think you'll be totally happy with those! I've had focusrites and they're great for everything and not murderous expensive. They also last forever. I've got a first Gen 6i6 still going strong. Best of luck.
Hello thanks for your video !! i just buy the shelford channel and i need help pls :) I want to ask you with my interface Prism Sound Lyra i can choose between +4 and -10 on the line input can i choose the normal output of the shelford channel at +4 on my prism ? or i need to put it in the -6db ?
i just read my manual and it's not really clear for me. Analog Line Inputs : Input sensitivity: Switchable ‘+4dBu’ (0dBFS=+18dBu) or ‘-10dBV’ (0dBFS=+6dBu)
@@flozzy1988 send it +4! at that setting, the interface outputs +18dbu at 0dfs, which is about half of the +24.5dbu voltage that the shelford can tolerate at its line inputs.

Has to be one of the best classic looking pieces of gear out right now. Awesomeness!
more videos like this on your gear please

I second this?
Such a lovely layout.
According to Apollo hardware and software manuals (at least for x racks) headroom is +20 or default +24 for ins and outs

IS the blue and red silk the exact same as on the MBP?
