Wedge honestly has one of my favorite character arcs in the Original Trilogy.
- A New Hope: Starts off the Battle of Yavin intimidated by the Death Star and ultimately has to abandon the attack because his ship was damaged.
- The Empire Strikes Back: One of Luke's best pilots on Rogue Squadron, comes off sounding a lot more confident and is the only pilot in the squadron to successfully pull off the harpoon and tow cable trick to trip up the AT-ATs.
- Return of the Jedi: Now leads Red Squadron and sounds calm and focused throughout the battle, delivering orders quickly and clearly. Keeps his cool flying through Death Star II and fires one of the two shots that destroys the station.
I grew up reading the “x-wing” book series. In it Wedge really demonstrates his administrative, and strong leadership skills leading various squads of different types of pilots. He proves to be a good judge of talent as well
@@aaronwilliams431Not to mention in the Expanded Universe he still has a level of modesty. He always reminded new pilots who joined Rogue Squadron about Biggs Darklighter and his sacrifice for Luke at Yavin (they always considered him a founding member). And if anyone thought they were gonna try and top it then they can forget it because in his book no one could match it, not even himself with all of his accomplishments.
In Legends he gets married and has kids who are amazing pilots as well.
Useless trivia, the original actor for Wedge was fired after the briefing scene.
Beautiful. Almost 38 years old and the FX still looks and feels more powerful than many contemporary sci-fi movies.
Mostly because theres minimal CGI in these films. Why a lot of film with 90% CGI get outdated.
the only big cgi I can spot is green/blue screen, everything else looks practical
Exactly
@@nicolasmun13 Theres no CGI, not little; no cgi existed in the 80s bub
@@timewarpdrive77 they used computers to edit and make this film. Were the lightsabers real light? and even remastered it with minimal cgi in the 90s VHS. But thanks for letting me know lol
Btw this came out in the 80s lol smh
i love the little detail of wedge closing the s-foils right before the falcon loses the dish
OMG! All these years, and I've never even noticed that until I saw your comment. That's a nice little detail for sure.
Neither did I. 🤯 1:15
You must have good eyes!
@@michaelm9810 If you think thats cool, you should try watching Star Wars battle sequences at like .5 speed. There are a TON of little details. At least in the originals and the prequels. The sequels not so much, but George Lucas was really big on trying to make battles feel somewhat realistic. So there is always something going on in the background usually or little things like what Wedge did. Revenge of the Sith opening Battle of Coruscant is chock full of little details like droids actually being present on the bridge of cruisers when Anakin and Obi-Wan are flying around.
The first trilogy is a masterpiece in every way, flawless effects, incredible performances, great script and lack of unnecessary jokes.
Blah blah. They all had their moments. I loved them all.
First was clearly the best. The super nerds never gave the rest a chance. Read the books and talk about that?
Absolutely agree
Man is still throwing digs at the prequels in 2024
until you get to ewoks
@@ElStink4K Yo just because the prequels aren't as good doesn't mean they're not enjoyable
The space battle in this movie is one of the major reasons it's my favorite out of the OT. That shot of the Falcon flying back into the tunnel as the reactor collapses behind it, combined with the sound effects and music, not to mention the shockwave from the Death Star's explosion....chef's kiss.
As much as I love the destruction of the first Death Star, there’s something about this one’s destruction that feels so much more satisfying. At least in my opinion.
Maybe because the destruction of this Death Star was also the death knell of the galactic empire.
Plus there were more than just X-wings and Y-wings involved.
@@bman3794until JJ Abrams and Disney decided it would destroy the franchise legacy with the horrendous sequels. Oh hey, sorry Rebels, the Empire is somehow back again, with a new name!
@@VideoAmericanStyle too true 😞😔
For me it it was the YEEHAW that was special
Love it when the reactor explodes and the Falcon flies towards the camera. I still wish they had released this in 3D, that scene would be even more epic.
Emperor: "So, they got rid of the trench that led to the exhaust port that was essentially a self destruct button on this 2nd Death Star?"
Storm Trooper: "Yes sir. Now it's a tunnel that leads to the energy source that is essentially a self destruct button."
Emperor: "Sounds good."
The only reason they got through was because the Death Star wasn’t fully built. I imagine if they could have finished adding the rest of the plating around the Death Star, it would have been impenetrable.
Palpatine: "Okay so we finally addressed the issue of things that lead straight to the reactor right?"
"Yes my lord, although we're afraid a direct hit on the superlaser may blow up these new Star Destroyers."
Palpatine: "You mean the thing that runs half the length of the ship and is hanging out exposed for everyone to hit will blow it up?! Bane damn it, shove those things back under the ice and have the designers executed."
That model/camera work of the tunnels and flying over the surface still blows my mind!
I cannot imagine how many times I have watched this scene or this movie and not until today did I notice that at 1:15 the X-Wing closes its foils to slip through a smaller gap.
Same. Just noticed now that now after so many times I watched this movie.
Luke took a serious risk flying that shuttle out of the disintegrating Death Star. I wouldn’t be surprised if the rebels blasted him out of the sky, thinking he was the Emperor or Vader making a break for it.
Fun Fact: Poe Dameron's mother, Shara Bey actually did try and blast Luke out of the shuttle right afterwards.
@@Ace.net32Shitty mom tbh
@@Ace.net32 sorry but you fun fact is false. Because if she blast the shuttle, how luke can be alive and bring his father bodies on endor
@@Ace.net32 Fun fact; theres no such thing as a poe dameron.

The fire emerging from the sides of the tunnel in FRONT of the Millenium Falcon at 3:10 is such a great, thrilling little touch.
wedge is goated. “i’m going in”, yea you are king
Tie interceptor pilots too. May not have won, but you gotta respect their effort in this
Wedge Antilles is the Star Wars ultimate badass. Name one other pilot who survived *both* Deathstar attacks? I'll wait.
Luke Skywalker
@@theunknowncommenter725 I'll grant it to you on a technicality. Although he wasn't piloting anything during the attack on DS2. He just snatched up a shuttle and "noped out."
Wedge was Luke’s wingman for the first Deathstar assault, so they were the Maverick & Iceman of that battle.😎
Luke Didnt attackt he second death star@@theunknowncommenter725
Chewbacca
It was much easier for Lando than Luke destroying the first Deathstar, having to evade Vader’s TIE squadron through a narrow path heavily defended by cannons, and hitting a much smaller target at more precise timing.😎
You mean the target that rather could have had been hit from above on a straight angle by any novice pilot? 🤷
@@johnhyout you’re welcome to try if you wanna be a kamikaze
Who are you even arguing with?
@@danielfolkard-fm2ss who’s arguing? Do you even know what an argument is?
Sry I took the comment as aggressive towards people who thought landing was a better pilot than Luke, and my point was that no one thinks that, guess I mistook your comment. Sorry.
Iconic Scene 3:08-3:19. Lando and The Crew was almost finished when the explosion nearly finished them and they got out just in time
That fire that destroyed the pursuing TIE Interceptor should have destroyed the Falcon and killed Lando & Nien Nunb (the Sullustan co-pilot). It got ahead of the Falcon and surrounded it by the time it reached the opening.
@@nopcshere6097 The Falcon is a lot tougher and shielded better than a TIE fighter so that's why it survived. Most TIEs can be taken out by a single shot from an X Wing while the Falcon was able to face down numerous TIEs and escape with little damage.
@@nopcshere6097do you realized how absurb the amount of shield Falcon has? In Battlefront I it was nerfed because player just use that amount of shield to ram other ships without catch a scratch
1:16
That was more than a scratch, Lando.
All these years of watching this, and I've only just noticed - at 3:33, just after 3PO says 'They did it', he get s a gentle pat on the back from a member of the squad.
3:07 ?????: You've become so strong, Fox.
trust your instincts
I feel a bit sad for that last TIE-Pilot.
he was so close dang it
dude the FXs from ILM in the original SW are the best EVER in all cinema HANDS DOWN.
I have watched this for 40 years now but earlier have I not noticed the effect at 2:38. Right before the explosion, the upper part of the center is seen imploding downwards. Cool!
Glad I’m not the only one who noticed it too!
The chronological final Star Wars movie.
Last of the great star wars movies
This movie is actually totally underrated. I think a good case can be made for it being the best Star Wars movie of all.
Not sure why the Emperor was so cocky, even with successfully pulling off his trap. From the battle that I saw, the imperial fleet was getting their asses kicked.
Man I still find it funny that with seeing The Return of the Jedi and then seeing The Rise of Skywalker that in both films Lando was piloting the Millennium Falcon during the final battles.
1:16 Poor Satellite 📡
Crazy to think how much construction actually went into building the death stars.
Still a better scene than anything from the sequels!
That hee haw gets me everytime
I would pay to time travel and be with the audience in the 1983 premiere
Lucas put the hammer down with this scene. Its so damn kinetic.
The shot of the Falcon reentering the duct, the explosion behind it, and the change to the musical score is one of the best cinematic shots in history. The fact the shot is now 41 years old is unbelievable. I was 7 years old watching this in the State Theater in Eureka, CA and I still get goosebumps today. One of the best scenes of all time.
best battle before dark time before Disney times 🙂
Second favorite Star wars movie of all time behind the original.
So, do Wedge and Lando just share that Death Star kill? Or did they have an epic sabacc game to decide? Or rock paper scissors?
emperor: build me a fancy throne room
crew: shouldn't we install first the gate that prevents ships from penetr...
emperor: THRONE ROOM!
That little moment of relief from Akbar at 2:04 is more poignant and realistic acting than you get in a lot of the prequels.
So Palpatine would survive falling thousands of feet, two massive explosions and being in the vacuum of space...?
He didn’t survive, his body was destroyed but his soul went to a decayed clone body
@@redshot5403 😂 oh, JJ Abrams.
@@VideoAmericanStyle Yeah, but he was also having to fix a lot from Star Wars 8
@@zero-z4551 His work on Ep 7 was nothing to write home about, either. It seemed to me to be a rehashed copy of A New Hope’s plot, with some head-scratching character development (or lack thereof).
I don't think so
I wonder if Han actually ripped into Lando about losing the dish while flying through the super structure of the Death Star?
He did in the comic Shattered Empire
😂
@@theunknowncommenter725Han's reaction gets obliquely mentioned in a few Legends post-Endor novels as well, although as Lando was a bit distraught at the state of his former ship in Shadows of the Empire, it kind of evens out?
I've heard from the comics, he definitely wasn't thrilled about it
4 minutes of Lando and wedge better than Disney's entire movies with star wars
This trilogy is really the telling of one story. Lucas had planned the Death Star destruction to be here, when he thought he’d have to cram everything into one movie then he needed to destroy the first Death Star at the end of that movie, thinking he wouldn’t get to make any sequels.
Lando orders all fighters to follow him.... who's left to protect the rebel frigates outside then?
“Red group, Gold group, all fighters follow me” only red and gold group fighters followed him and all other groups would keep attacking the fleet
3:18 RIP.
The Music, Dialogue, The FX Shots when the tide has finally turned 0:05 is

This is playing in my head every time i watch the enterprise destroy the cube in the picard finale
I wonder if Data saying 'Here goes nothing' before the Enterprise Centers the Borg cube was a homage to this?
When the reactor falls and explodes. Pretty epic scene. I guess the rebels know it would blow instantly. Just enough time to get ahead of the explosion. Destroyed the power regulator, and destroyed some type of energy field generator holding up the reactor. Clever.
(100th comment)
In terms of pilot:
Wedge > Luke
“I’m already on my way out”
By definition; this was the conclusion to the Star Wars saga. Screw you disney!
Imagine trying to do repairs to the death star. Looks like a nightmare
Special FX more powerful than you can possibly imagine.
Palpatine response to that tie first tie that didn’t turn hard enough and crashed “ who hired that guy”
The super star destroyer not only had its bridge offline, but also one of its engines was on fire. Plus the admiral made a mistake being so close to the death star 2. Piett, you fool.
-Captain Pellaeon, probably
Wasn’t that Palpatine’s order?
Its worse than that the novelisation makes it clear that the Executor was in serious trouble even before the bridge was destroyed. Her aft shields were down, aft decks were on fire and the attitude control systems were heavily damaged. She also collided with several vessels before she collided with the Death Star.
@@AndrewJamesWilliams Is that the original novelization or the disney one?
@@timewarpdrive77 the original
I wished there was a brief shot of the fighters actually getting back to the surface before going back in.
Goosebumps
How the fuck did Palpatine survive this?
He didn’t he was brought back by cloning and dark science

There goes the Emperor’s credit for sure this time
I think I commented on this in another comment but after the Battle of Endor I'll bet Han wasn't too happy learning his ship lost it's rectenna dish when it was flying through the guts of the Death Star.

This is when Y wings need their gunner.
This is my favorite space battle cause I remember when I was a kid I pretended my dads car as the Falcon
