    i was a young trainspotter at chesterfield in the 1970s. lots of loco variations to see back then, great fun. locos are what brings character to any railway, alas not so many types nowadays (only class 66s and a few others) big shame really.

    I'm not sure whether to feel nostalgic or sad. Great video of things long gone. Platform approach speeds are now a crawl.

      At Reading the HST's stormed into the platform a high rate of knots. Now with TPWS, and drivers not allowed to 'drive properly' (it's like painting by numbers now, "this far from the signal you do this ect") trains creep about taking up track capacity-crazy world!

    Nice video, reminds me of my visit there in August 1990 when I saw much the same stuff. There was a good view from the footbridge to the north of the station, which I used for many photos that day

      Yes I agree, it was the end of the era when any loco could turn up on anything, and the start of dull predictability (and constant decline in everything (such as two car 156s all the way from Norwich to Liverpool.)

      IC Mk1 stock was used on service trains back then, not that common but there was a few rakes kicking about, some right interesting mixtures every now and then. I was out all the time in 1990, cracking year.

    • @paulwinterbourne1865

      @@westerleighwerek1493 It could well be an Inter-City cross country service then. I filmed this mid week so it was unlikely to be a charter although not impossible.

    • @taffboyslim
      @taffboyslim 4 роки тому

      The first coach had one of those paper 'Destination & stations' info sheets stuck to the door, so it probably isn't a charter (I used to 'collect' them off trains in Cardiff). Plus there's a guy waiting to get on with 4 bags of shopping :-). My guess is a Newcastle-South West England/South Wales service. I moved to Dronfield (the station between Chezzy and Sheffield) in 1989 but still travelled back to Wales by train quite a bit. In those days it was usually a 47 with all sorts of stock, but they were inevitably replaced by HSTs. I used to play golf at Tapton Park municipal golf course in Chesterfield (George Stephenson lived at Tapton House). There were some cracking views looking west over the railway with the town and twisted spire beyond, I used to love playing golf on a summer evening and seeing/hearing the mail train go through behind a 47, along with 58s and 56s on MGRs and 37s barking their way through the station on steel trains. Good times.

      Unusual engines, you'd open the power handle and not much would happen....'and then a bit of a rumble and then movement. If light engine they would shoot off like a rocket!.....Nice little engines to work on i thought......
