OUR VAN BED IS FOR SALE! We recently had to sell the 2015 Grand Caravan but the platform and mattresses are available if you are near Ann Arbor Michigan contact us, no shipping or delivery sorry.
BTW, the Ikea legs did a great job supporting me (Bill) on the platform! We have 10 legs on each platform and it ended up being VERY sturdy in the end. We have learned that providing air flow on the platform is important to reduce the chance of mold in our foam, so we will be adding some drilled holes to provide for this.
We built this platform pretty low, our clearance is about 11 1/2 inches up front and 9 inches in the rear. You could certainly build higher for under bed storage. Ours is low mainly due to the 6" foam and me (Bill) being 6'6" tall, so I wanted as much headroom as possible.

@@karenclausen6724 Hi Karen ;) I had removed the 3rd row seating and had just cut a 2x4 i lay back there in the "trunk" area that when I want to prop up the seat to a recliner i just sort of position it centrally with a small block I had installed of scrap to the back base, so it sort of just rests and props the seat, holds my big butt so it's pretty solid but nothing fancy. I have seen others use like eye loops and paracord to the seatbelt mount areas but heck I had 2x4 layin there and said humm would this work... Always trial and error for me...

I like the Ikea legs, I used just wooden ones (they work OK but the top of yours looks sturdier I will keep this in mind if I need to replace the legs thanks) I covered my bed with a vinyl, and use it as a counter during the day. its built even with the fridge so its smaller and I use the fridge as part of the bed. My husband builds a similar platform. Similar in that it is in a minivan a Toyota Sienna. It is all wood with 2x4 legs but it is just a solid platform, but I slip flat totes underneath the bed with one for pots and pans, one for plates and flat wear and cooking utensils and another for food. We also fit a tent, chairs, and foldable tables underneath. We put a mattress on top of the platform along with the bedding and suitcases. Next time I will add another tote or two for clothes under the bed. We added a platform on the back using the tow hitch to carry our propane tanks and cooker in a tote outside so we didn't have to worry about leaking propane. There was room for the cooler too. All-in-all a good temporary conversion for a week of camping. We found sleeping in the van much more comfortable than in the tent. But we set up the tent for a place to change.

I am BEYOND thrilled that I happened upon your video this morning! I purchased a 2005 Chevy Astro passenger van that is currently having some repairs done to it, and I have watched hundreds of hours of videos on how best to do a “no-build build” in my van. I have been planning and acquiring to be ready to simply place things in the van once it is actually ready for me to use. I wanted versatile, like you mentioned. I purchased 2 folding bed platforms that, together, equal one double/full bed. This was after hundreds of videos. However, after watching your video this morning, I am DEFINITELY going to build folding platform like you did. The way they fold up to make more space when not in use is pure genius!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!🤗

I had the good fortune to finally stumble upon the bed solution for my no-build van build.
I gave up trying to figure out a platform or cot frame and just put the tri-fold mattress on top of a 2'x3' cement tub 8" high with 1/3 flipped up to make a comfy chair with my bedding stored under the tub. For sleep I just set the tub aside and fold out the bed. My set-up is based upon the space from the tailgate to just behind where the sliding doors open leaving all the space open between the doors. I can just take a vinyl tarp and throw it over my things and nobody knows what is there and I still have a lot of storage between the doors as well as room to set up a quad chair if I like. It's the back 2/3rds of the van rather than side to side with a little space down the middle to move.

Hi there, I saw your vid. I've been truck camping since the mid 80's. Back when rainbows were black & white. Here's what I've learned & I'll pass them on to you.
    1) Get stuff you need at a camping store for backpacking. It's small, compact, & light weight.
2)Get splash guards for your truck. It'll help keep you & your rig clean. They work. I know.
    3) When parking for the night, park headlong into the wind. That way if a storm comes you won't have to worry about a side wind ripping off your camper shell. Plus, if anything comes bouncing towards the truck, since you have a slimmer profile, it might miss you. If it does hit, the front of the truck is reinforced.
    4) Use bug spray on the interior doors & windows/ screens openings to help keep bugs out. Use wasp & hornet spray around & on your tires to help keep critters out. Basically, all points of contact on the ground.
    5) An inch is a lot of room. Learn how to stack & get used to sand & dirt. Use floor mats to put your shoes on too
6)Air out your sleeping area every morning or often. In an enclosed space the air gets stale & it will smell like feet & assholes. I know this from being in an 80 man berthing when I was in THE NAVY!
7)Use a small fan to circulate the air in your sleeping area. This will help prevent hot & cold spots from forming & help prevent condensation & mold & mildew from forming.
8)Use a solid hooded sweatshirt. Draw the hood tight when you sleep to help encapsulate body heat. It can double as a pillow/ dirty clothes holder/ gear carrier.
I hope this helps. Great vid, thanks for sharing. Drive safe. 🤠

Discarded the couches and chair and attached velcro where I needed it and when its bed time, the longer back couch cushions are on the floor with the 3 shorter seat cushions in top of them attached with the velcro with the chair cushion serving as a headboard. When I need a chair, I simply re-stack them into a chair and it feels like im in a lazyboy. I save a ton of space and put less weight in the van. Total cost including the velcro, $26

I love the bed design you came up with. For someone who can't afford to spend as much it still gives us an idea on how to set up a bed. I was thinking of black plastic shelves as the base and not using any under floor space. We have the black plastic shelves in the house. The only downfall I can see is that we would not be able to fold away the foot end like you did. And where would we put the fridge except under the bed. It would also affect the head room. We are both short so that may be fine. I love your idea tho, it seems really fancy to be able to fold down the foot end and lift the back to us it as a seat. You could even lift the back to cook in the back. You could also lift the middle section so you sit facing out the back of the vehicle. Your set up is so versatile! Love your video, makes me think about my set up! Thank you from Alberta, Canada.

    • @StaceyBillsAdventures
      @StaceyBillsAdventures  3 роки тому +3

First i made sure the van was on level ground in the driveway we have a slope after our parking pad. Then I put the platform in the van laying on the floor, then (don't laugh), but I used any box I could find (mostly amazon boxes).
At one part a small bucket I have for washing the car was a good height towards the back, so with a level and lots of moving boxes around shimming a few with just scrap cardboard to fill in under the platform till I had it level and a height I wanted, then I just measured floor to platform at the hinge areas.
I was afraid to cut the legs if I was wrong but the feet do adjust so I figured worst case I could adjust a bit with the feet, but it worked out really well. So far the beds been fantastic, the one thing we didn't go into here and didn't know when we built it was that it should have holes in it for airflow to reduce the chance of any mold between the platform and the foam mattress, for now i put some pipe insulator tubes between them to sort of lift the foam off the platform and allow some airflow but I will pull them and drill holes in the platform soon. - Bill :)

I have a simar set up.Since I often can't find a level parking spot while traveling, I have alternate, different sized, legs that can be switched around to raise or lower your feet or head end of the bed to counter the uneven parking angle for a level bed. Even a small array of different thickness blocks work and are relatively easy to store with limited space in ur tiny rv. Wishing you great times and safe travels!

I was going to do a wood frame but being that the floor is not level I was thinking that was going to be a challenge. Not anymore! I’m going to use those legs! Found some on Amazon of all different sizes so I may not even need to cut them but even so, they will be less weight, allow more room for storage and be a heck of a lot easier!
