I think you have demonstrated that the subject, light, and your interaction with the subject are probably the most important things about "portrait" lenses, because any lens can be a portrait lens. I can never land on one favorite lens. With the type of work I do, a zoom lens is really a necessity, so I make my 24-105 f4 and 70-200 f4 work, and even though they are f4 lenses, I can still blur the background when needed.
My favorite is the 135mm f2, even though I don't get to use it often. It just has magical qualities that I can't explain. When I attach the 1.4x converter, I have a 189mm f2.8!
    Great video! Thanks for posting!

I've tried many but I always come back to Fujifilm XF35mm1.4 no matter what scenario or portrait shoot

Beautiful work, as always. The portrait of Jenna West was the most complex as the family name, "West" resonates with metaphorical meaning of that perfectly documented moment which catches the illumination, light and hubris in her eyes, as she inhales and kills and destroys herself; when she exhales she kills and destroys society.

First comment on this video yey :) Just wanted to say, I am using the Sigma 40mm 1.4 art on my R5. I love that lens, for any kind of photography almost. Including for portraits. And as an added bonus, is one of the sharpest lenses EVER produced. It is on par with the Zeiss Otus 55 1.4. And it has a lot of character. A superb lens.

These are some insprirational work. I only have one small comment ot make about the portrait with the Leica Q and its fixed 28mm Lens @ 8:11. The hand appears to be a little out of scale and prominent compared to the face. It is not distracting, but the effect of the 28mm is evident. Brilliant volume of work nonetheless, and a double like if it were possible.

Terrific portraits ! Loved it ! Each focal length can have its charm and usefulness if used well. You do ! Personally, I really like working with 35 and 50 mm to leave context in the images. Thanks for sharing Ben and, as always, warm greetings from Switzerland !!! Jean-Luc

On my FF, Sigma 105mm 1.4 and for my Fuji Viltrox 75mm. I have the Sigma 40mm as well. I am not a wide angle portrait person overall but when I have used it, killer lens.

I would like to see a video on how you choose your aperture. Do you have a ‘favorite’ aperture? At what point do you you fear losing sharpness in some areas by going for too fast an aperture? Thanks.

the portraits are OK and some v.good. Write a few notes before U start! "I 'think or...." kinda sucks. I don't keep buying more gear! My from new in box,Leica M3 is 56 years old! Lens mostly 50mm Collapsible Summicron. Older than M3.Nikon-F with 105mm, Sonnar type. 135mm Tele-Elmarit f4, super sharp! Seldom. Mamiya C seies 180mm Pro work only, studio. Lenses, bodies, formats! Not impressed.
