And then I realize everyone else appreciates them now, as well, and price is 10x. Never sell a good condition Leica lens. That’s my advice. lol This old Leica fan learned some things from your presentation-thank you! I have never owned this lens, typically jumping to the 90s as I often shot on the M3 (no frame lines). I really need to get one of these before they blow up.
Excellent discussion. I have a Summilux-R 80mm (1986), which was introduced by Mandler at the same time as the 75mm. It has similar qualities and is somewhat cheaper than the 75mm on the used market.
Still a great buy. Unfortunately the prices have been jacked up over the past few years. Generally you get closer focussing distances, heavier lenses & longer focus throws for the same engineering knowhow of how to curve glass to make beautiful things...

I owned it in the film days, loved its rendition (you express very clearly what makes it so lovely) but had a hard time focusing it wide open at portrait distance. It really challenges the limits of rangefinder focusing. It is also large and heavy for a M lens, and I traded it in for a 75mm summicron, which is much more practical but less magical. Anyway, that 75 'lux will be fantastic on any of the current generation of mirrorless bodies, and I deeply regret not owning it anymore. Unaffordable for me at current prices with my current revenues. I have been told that the latest Voigtlander 75mm f/1.5 behaves very similarly. Have not seen any serious comparisons though. Thanks for the video.
The reason I bought a v3 of the 75mm Summilux is that it came factory 6-bit coded and apparently was tuned for digital vs film. The focus of my copy has always been spot on for portraits closer to minimum focus distance. Like you, this is also my favorite lens.
Nice review. I had this lens some years ago, spent a huge amount of money for a complete revision (cemented lenses made it expensive), sold it later because I misfocussed it so often on my m9. If that’s the case… This is a lovely lens to shoot on your camera. 1. the colours but 2. also I believe it has a great evf. Do you have a good Lyca M mount to Sony E mount adapter already?
Great review Oli, and wondeful photos !! Thanks a lot, always super inspiring 🚀 This 75 Lux is a dream portrait lens for sure, even more on a SL body. For now, I am enjoying my (not so fancy, but still great) 50 Lux ASPH. Did you already try this one in the past ? 🙂
Great video! I love the photos you took with this. If you like R lenses, you should try the 100mm macro--it's one of the best lenses I've ever had on any system. The 75mm focal length is surprisingly awesome and unique. I love the micro contrast on Manler's design. Your videos are excellent. Looking forward to your next piece!
Thank you very much man. I'm glad that you liked it. I will definitely check out the 100mm when I get a chance… If I get a chance. In preparation for shooting this video I took a few shots and shot a few clips with the 85 mm I have and I was totally sincere about missing those extra 10 mm. 75 mm is a very cool focal length. What do you enjoy about the 100 so much?
It's the compression you can get since it can natively get down to a 1:2 macro ratio. You end up getting compression that makes it look like a noctilux, but it's still a 2.8 lens. It's also incredibly sharp in the center but the fall-off is similar to the noctilux. It pairs quite nicely on the SL system as well with the adapter and if you can find one of the el-pros for it, you can get true 1:1 for those rare moments you want true macro. I love it for portrait and landscape. It's even replaced my tried-and-true 135, which I thought would never happen.
@@oliscurra For full-frame cameras, I use the following lenses for half-length and head & shoulder portraits: 85mm f/1.4 Nikkor on Nikon F2, F4, and D200 SLRs 85mm f/1.8 Nikkor on Nikon F2, F4, and D200 SLRs 90mm f/2 Leitz on Leica M6 and M10 rangefinders 90mm f/2.8 Zeiss on Contax G1 rangefinder Of the four, the 85mm f/1.4 is my favorite because it is the only one that is auto focus and it is the only one with a 77mm filter thread. Like I said in the video, I'm always very hesitant about recommending anyone to spend such a large sum of money. Especially although all three are bokeh monsters... they all produce a slightly different image aesthetic. In a nutshell I would say the roll off from focus to out of focus in more differentiated with the Sony's than the 75mm. The 75mm is more gradual. Another option is the leica 80mm summilux-r f/1.4. It's a r lens... same aesthetic as it's 75mm m lens counterpart, same optical design... but of course you'd need the r to e mount. Love the 75 but never wanted one on my M. Going to have to go looking for one though now because I think the SL2S is in my future. Never needed a flippy and I would rather have the 2s over the SL3. I mean I agree that companies' lenses were designed with some level of consistency in mind. And those often differed between companies, especially before the current generation where makers are racing to make sensors and lenses that look same-y. I think some maker's lenses get too much benefit of the doubt though, Leica and Zeiss coming to mind where it's true they hit a lot of home runs but even Walter Mander struck out sometimes. This lens seems super cool, never seen one in person myself. Personally if I were buying a short M tele, I would save some money and get a 90AA, and take a step back (and turn the clarity slider down lol). But I totally get why someone would go for the 75 instead.
The thing about manufacturer's making lenses that look same-y (nice one 🙂) is that in most cases lenses are designed by people who are engineers first & possibly photographic artists second. (No facts are used here - so salt and a few grains to be taken). Still, I can imagine that the goal is to first make a realistic image & second make it interesting. With the way technology has evolved since over 40 - 80 years ago, this probably results in a lot of same-y looks. A designer would've to specifically adjust the balance of priorities between clinical perfection & artistic image today. Never shot the 90. I've heard a lot of good things, but especially since shooting 75 for that "near shot", 90 seems almost "macro-esque". Thanks for watching & leaving your thoughts by the way. 👍🏽 What's your cam setup?

I think it's important that the before's are there. Fully edited doesn't give a proper view of what the gear can or can't do. In terms of visual aesthetic minus composition & overall subject, I feel there's an aesthetic to a lens which some have and other's don't, which serve as the base for the photographer to use it in a particular way.
Thet "give" at the end of the apture ring seems to be consistent for all leica lenses. I buy all my lenses used and all my leica lenses are like that. Even the ones i test out at leica stores. @@oliscurra I’ve a video dropping tomorrow very short one shooting some fp4 film at a building that is now gone. Also two videos from Vienna in the works but there is plenty editing on those so maybe two weeks away. :) hope you check it out. Probably in the evening your time ;) cheers
I've "belled" your subscription so I will see it drop. 😉 Lately the algorithm has been feeding me a hodge podge of stuff, but not good clean wholesome photography.
@@oliscurra thanks mate. Yes a few videos back the algo just stopped showing mine to anybody new. Maybe it’s not gen z enough 🤣🫣 think mr beast bahahaha
Rarely i comment on a video but man i love your portraits and i will like to see more of them, do you post on instagram?
Me: "Oh that looks awesome!"
Checks prices: "Nevermind"
I hear ya brother. Apparently the Voigtländer 75mm 1.5 is similar... but I've never used it. Another option is the Leica 80mm R 1.4. This is the exact same design, but the lens is designed for the R mount. So if you're putting it on a mirrorless then you need a different adapter but it'll work.
@@oliscurrathnx a lot. I will check it out!
This video is giving me so much GAS it's unbelievable. I NEED the Mandler 75 'lux!!!
Oh no. Never make a GAS decision mate. Wait a week or two at least. 🙂 What do you shoot your portraits with at the mo in that focal range and on what camera?
I like using an old Soviet Jupiter-9 85mm f2 for portraits...
Have you got some photos online? That’s a lovely lens. Tons of bokeh character. I assume design is based in Leica or Zeiss design.
my fav is the canon 85 1.2
That’s a lovely lens there mate. I built my entire wedding career on the Sigma 35 1.4 and the canon 85 1.2. Although mine was the version 1.
Portrait King Is A Photographer:)
Right you are. 🤓 It seems a cliché choice, but Peter Lindberg is right up there for me. Helmut Newton, Sally Mann, Ruven Afanador too. Too many to count in fact. Who are your favourites?
Having had the 75mm/1.4 V2, I can tell you that the Nokton 1.5/75mm is just as good and much cheaper!
Cheers mate. I will certainly check it out if I get the chance. From what I saw on flickr it looks like an interesting lens.
What’s the other lens you wouldn’t sell?
Merci beaucoup mec. 🙏
I have one made in Canada 🇨🇦
Nice one. 👍🏽 I assume V2. What do you think about the lens?
@@oliscurra don’t use it much on my M6 or M10 very stiff to focus and of course difficult to focus. But yes it beautiful my 75mm 1.25 Noct I like better as it easier to focus
I'd love to give the 75mm noct a whirl once. Must be an interesting look. I assume you find it easier to focus because ring is not as stiff... 🤔
80-90% is editing skills IMO as we can see the befores and the afters
I think it's important that the before's are there. Fully edited doesn't give a proper view of what the gear can or can't do. In terms of visual aesthetic minus composition & overall subject, I feel there's an aesthetic to a lens which some have and other's don't, which serve as the base for the photographer to use it in a particular way.
Hi Oli, what you take on this vs Voigtlander Heliar Classic 75mm f/1.8 VM? thanks!
❓ What's your most important portrait tip or trick?
Use good Profo lights
Find a good-looking model willing to wear little cloths. Nobody then looks at the technical aspects of your portrait.
Lighting and a well balanced background in terms of colour
Thet "give" at the end of the apture ring seems to be consistent for all leica lenses. I buy all my lenses used and all my leica lenses are like that. Even the ones i test out at leica stores. Funny thing is i also buy used ziess and voigtlander lenses and they don't have that give. They feel more solidly built than Leica lenses. 😂😂😂😅😅
Can’t agree on the microcontrast. The lack of it is what makes this lens particularly ideal for portraits.
You’ve just made my day. I own the version 2 😊 excellent review. You’ve covered all the bases and some
That's awesome to hear Daniel. What do you shoot it on?
@@oliscurra I bought an M4P (I had no idea the 75lux was made for the M4P), M6 and an M11. Oh and you said how good it is on a mirrorless, a Nikon Z6. Love your photos. Best examples of portraits I’ve seen that show off this beautiful lens.
