Ben, as a M43 shooter I found this to be incredibly inspiring. Thank you so much for posting it.
Appreciate this Jay
It doesn't matter what camera you use, its the talent that matters
This
You are the best portrait photographer I have ever seen. I wish you could take a picture of my father and my wife, but we will probably never meet.
My mother was unalived last year and I also don't have any pictures of her. Once people are gone, you realize how important photos are because that's all you will have when they are gone.
Take photos of your loved ones!
I went from a Canon 6D and 3 L lenses to a Oly EM5mkii with an Oly 12-40 2.8 and Lumix 35-100 2.8. I took senior portraits on my son and his girlfriend with the 35-100 and was absolutely blown away by the results even after blowing it up to 24 X 16. The colors and details were amazing. All one has to do is know the tool and use it correctly. For me that means that if I want results like a 85mm on a full frame, I shoot 85mm on M43 and stand back twice the distance. You have shared wonderful photos from M43 which may surprise many--but they don't surprise me.
Awesome
The Nocticron is everything. The first time I used it on my GH4 I almost cried. I had rented it but I went and found one on Craigslist and my love for it is pretty extreme. With my GH5 there is no stopping us. Thanks for sharing these portraits - absolutely stunning.
It’s the best. Thanks for watching
Spectacular images. Ben, you should be proud. It isn’t just the lens that is important, but also the photographer and their ability to connect with the subject.
Thank you sir
I just love your videos. It is like hanging out with a friend. Even better that we share a love for Lumix and M43 and photography in general. Beautiful images!
Best compliment. Gracias.
My goodness Ben. Some fantastic portraits. Love the texture and tones in your work.
Many thanks!
My journey in photography started with 0M1 in the seventies so I naturally gravitated into the Olympus 4/3 with digital and used various iterations for years in Papua New Guinea, mostly with portraiture, weathered the derision for the medium from many quarters and time has prove it unfounded. Thanks for your presentation your work affirms everything I have always thought.
Awesome
love the informal style. You are a damn good portrait photographer. Sometimes I would wish for more body and environment.
Thank you very much 🙏🏼
Ah man, my first mirrorless camera was the Olympus EPL1. I learned everything on that camera. Depth of field, Sunny 16, zone focusing…. And much more. Brilliant little camera. Beautiful portraits presented here. Found this quite enjoyable. I’m fed up with my work and direction at the moment, and this has given me some ideas.
Thanks for sharing! Go get some
You are the best photographer on the planet.
Thank you so much, means a lot!
Thanks for the video and the great portraits.
I have eight micro 4/3 lenses that I love. The 45mm f/1.8 is a wonderful head & shoulder portrait lens.
Great to hear!
I agree Ben. My first mirrorless camera was the GF1, back in 2010. I got really into it, I bought some vintage Berthiot lenses in an old camera shop in Paris and adapted them Micro 4/3 - C-mount. Beautiful unique results, awesome monochrome and artistic feel for shooting. I still love shooting with that camera and the lenses, it's just pure joy. Those early Lumix cameras were a revolution.
Awesome, appreciate this.
Just shows it's still all about the photograph ,excellent images and enjoyable video, Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it
Love these Ben. Love seeing your older work. Inspiring as always. Thanks!
Thanks so much!
Loved this…from the ‘rambling’ to the photos!
Hey thanks
M/43 system is so underated but as you have shown, it really can produce beautiful photographs. I've always been a big advicate of the m43 system and always used it along side my 5D MK III. Great photos and great video.
Thank ya
YOU'RE A INCREDIBLE PHOTOGRAPHER! I JUST LOOVVVVEEEE THE CONSISTENT LOOK, MOOD AND FEELING FROM YOUR PHOTOS, THAT YOU CAPTURE!!!🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
THANK YOU SIR
Your portraits are very nice. I find it interesting that you can get such good looking photos when using cameras that are marketed as being video-centric.
Oh they are fully capable stills cameras too. Best hybrid cameras on the market I think..
Fun to see this. Great portraits. I used to shoot with the GH4 and GH5s... loved the Panasonic Leica 25mm F1.4 lens on that setup. Also even funnier was seeing a picture of John Rocha... I used to work with that dude, 10 years ago! Small world.
Awesome!
Inspiring.....
Makes me want to invest in a good lens for my lumix G3.😊
Yes. Lots of great lenses out there.
Nice work. The Sigma 56mm 1.4 is a less expensive but still very good portrait option for M43.
Ooo I’ll check it out. LOVE sigma.
True- I find the Sigma 56 1.4 a significant step above the Zuiko 45 1.8 (although that remains a very nice lens)
Thanks for a great video Ben. I shoot Micro 4/3 and Full Frame Lumix. Both are awesome!
🙏🏼🙏🏼 agreed!
You make amazing portraits! I LOVE LOVE the black and white as well!!
Thank you Travis
It is my first time watching your video on YT. It was an amazing time watching your arts and listening to your story and al your love to all those people. You are an amazing artist. Subscribed
Thank you very much
Started with 4/3 the day Olympus launched then m4/3. Just recently dipped my toes into the Nikon zf. But not leaving m4/3 when the Olympus 17mm 1.2 is still my favorite lens of all time.
I need to try that lens!! Thanks for watching!
Thanks, I love people photography and your work is exceptional! MFT rocks ❤
Many many thanks
Yep, the 42.5mm Noc Panasonic Leica is my favorite M4/3 lens. Thanks for the video.
So good. Thanks for watching.
Such incredibly made video to watch and relax. I am gonna watch it again, because of that mood you've made. I've become fan of MFT, since I bought tiny Lumix GM1 long time ago. Changed it to GF9 in pink color recently. I just found it incredible, that I can shoot Milky Way with 220g toy-like camera
Thank you. Go do it!
Wow. Really enjoyed the photos and the stories behind them. Wonderful. Thank you for sharing.
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Excellent work, I in love with my Oly gear but overall the photographer makes the difference. Bravo 👏 👏👏
Yes. Thank you.
Very inspiring ! Glad to see some love for m43 with really good portraits skills.
Thanks very much
Beautiful work!! And your enthusiasm and love for people made me happy 😃
Appreciate it
Just played with my new G9ii with the Panasonic 10-25. Insanely sharp with amazing colors. I really live m43
Awesome
Very nice inspiring portraits. I guess I'm gonna grab my PEN F tomorrow. Haven't used it for quite a while. Thanks
Thanks for watching
Exceptional content...Fantastic images sir..Thanks for sharing. M4/3 is such a great system..always in the bag, since 2012. Cheers.
Thank you sir
Merci beaucoup de mettre en avant le micro 4/3. Je possède le lumix G9markii et l'objectif 42,5 mm, j'en suis ravie ... J'attends toujours avec impatience vos post sur le micro4/3. Merci.Annie
Thank you very much Annie
I like the PanaLeica 25mm f/1.4 and the 12-32mm pancake zoom, which looks like junk but is a really great lens. With the 12-32, many M43 cameras are as pocketable as they are with the 20mm or 14mm prime. The cameras are great too, although I've never had a GH2. And I laugh when I try M43s after using my D2X and a zoom.
That 25 is soooo good! All those tiny lenses just rock. Thanks for watching!
Amazing portraits!
I've made some of my best shots on m43's as well, that includes portraits. The Lumix Leica 42,5 Noct is hands down the best lens I have ever owned and I had the best Olympus PRO lenses as well. The Noct is just on another level thanks to not only being super sharp but also having a lot of character and amazing bokeh. That lens is the biggest reason I miss m43.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing your photos it's great to see m43 portraits, I own one and enjoy the size. I subbed and came for building rapport when shooting subjects :)
Appreciate you
My lord... I've been shooting M4/3rds for years, but this was eye opening... inspiring!
🙏🏼🙏🏼
The lens speaks for itself, my perspective, but this bro have talent too, thanks for sharing
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Always love stopping by your channel! I love m43, but you bring great art to any camera you’ve got
Thank you sir
Really great work Ben, and as a 40yr+ pro' who is sometimes quite jaded/ burn out, I find these portraits & your presentation really quite inspiring 🙏 I also have Lumix kit, and yes that 20mm is great, also that tiny, cheap Zuiko 45mm. All the lenses you need really... I've got that cheap Fujinan lens too, it's good, unexpectedly.
Awesome to hear. Thank you.
I am not a professional photographer but a hobbyist who strives to practice photography daily.I know two professional photographers who have done great work with micro 4/3 Joe Edelman and Gavin Hooey both are on UA-cam and are not just UA-camrs but working pros. I have a had a Panasonic g1 an Olympus em10 and now an em5 mark 2. I also have other cameras but they all produce good results with good glass and focusing on composition and storytelling. Love your photos!
Thanks Jimmy, I’ll check them out. Are you in Alaska?
Ditched my D300 for my GF-1 with the 20mm when they came out and eventually Fujifilm. That was my moment of revelation that I didn't need big gear anymore to make amazing images.
Cool
How can i edit like that. Your pictures have so much freaking character and life. I can feel the emotions from the subjects, and the way you edit your black and white is so well balanced. I love your work and would love to see how you edit your pictures or do you have presets that you've made throughout the years.
I dont really know. The connection to the subject is the most important thing. Even if it’s a brief encounter. How you interact. I pay close attention to the contrast ratios when I edit. Don’t have any presets. Maybe I should finally make some…. But I probably won’t.
Thank you.
@@adventureStaley thank you for sharing your work with us. You are right. The connection with the subject is very important when taking these types of portraits.
I really loved the pani 42.5/1.2 with the G9. Problem was one day I realized the combo was physically bigger and heavier than my FF combo and that was the beginning of the end. Nice portraits! Still shoot M43 with a lovely compact travel/street body.
Yeah it’s not small. 🤘🏼 thank ya
Mind-blowing images, crazy to think that these were shot on a m43 camera
👁️👁️
Hanna, dont know how to spell it but she is fascinating, wondering about people that disappeared of my life.
Phenomenal shots. Just WOW!
🙏🏼
I am very happy to see your amazing portraits, taken with mft systems. I use it also and i love it! My compliments to you and all the beautiful girls you shot! WOLF
Gracias
Loved the video and the awesome portraits! A true testament to the versatility of M43 in the right hands and with the right lens.
Appreciate it
Awesome video!! Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Yes ... m43 is excellent for portraits. I used my OM5 + 17mm F1.8 and 45mm F1.8 during a photo workshop 3-4 months ago and you couldn't tell a difference between this setup and Sony A7IV + 35mm and 85mm I also used then.
🤘🏼
Thank you Ben for your marvelous portraits and shared knowledge.5
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Love the portraits regardless of the camera used.
Boom. Thanks.
Great photos, cool video. Never shot M43, but wow, amazing portraits.
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Stellar photographs. 4:3 is definitely my favorite aspect ratio. I still use my hacked gh2.
Amazing!
5:00. I don’t know, and I definitely wouldn’t be the one to ask him.
. . .I shoot mostly landscapes and some wildlife, but man, you are really tempting me to expand my horizons. Just really exceptional work. Can you go into your lighting setup?
These are almost all natural light. Window light. Whatever is available. I really pay close attention to where the subject is facing and what is behind them.
Really looking forward to this one.
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Amazing work friend i love my 45mm f1.8
It’s a good one
These pictures are just plain awesome. Yes, mFT is awesome, but come on… these pictures are stellar because of you and the models.
Thank you sir
MFT brought me back to photography!
Hey cool!
Thanks for sharing. Two lenses I'll never part with are the 25mm & 45mm 1.8's. I would love to do more portraits. I'm introverted and just don't know how to ask.
So much joy and fulfillment is on the other side of that fear. Trust me, I'm shy too.
Hi! This is the kind of video that before I end watching it, I decide to subscribe to the channel. Cheers
Thank you very much
You gotta find Hannah. She looks so good.
I know. Eh. I’ve tried!
wow! amazing photos.
🙏🏼🙏🏼
These portraits are spectacular. I may get my GH2 out of mothballs-and my really tiny GM-1.
Do it!
I was like that dude looks like John Rocha! lol It was! I've been following him for years on UA-cam...I'm a TV and movie nerd as well.
Awesome. I’ve known John for over 2 decades. Met him on this big Nick Cage film.
I think the more obvious question should really be, do we as photographers really need large high density sensors for portraiture, street photgraphy, editorial or even landscape photography? If we could put a lid on our desire to succumb to G.A.S and the new is always better and more mega pixel makes a better photographer, then the answer is a resounding NO, we don't need them. The proof is this video. Thank you. PS: Your C-Mount lens reminded me of when I put my 75mm F2 Apo-Summicron M on my Olympus EM1 MKII ( think of it as an Apo lens of 150mm F2 ). I only took a few stills photos of some dried flowers which were backlit, but man wide open @ F2 I could cut a piece of paper with that rendition. It was that sharp. MFT cameras are hugely versatile.
This is the way. Thank you.
Hi Ben, G9ii do you have anything special on settings? Maybe you could share your settings in a download?
Thanks for watching Andy. Nothing special about my settings. Shoot raw. Keep it simple.
Why the heck do people say M43 is not suitable for portraits because of focal length and lack of shallow DOF? These pics are awesome en I like the story behind them. Great job making this video ! I recognise a lot of the cast of Dangerous Catch, a show I watched several seasons.
Thanks btw for making the video longer than anticipated
Thanks for watching
@@adventureStaley Welcome, is there a trick to get the shallow DOF form m43 or is it just use max aperture ?
That’s it. Use a wide iris.
I just purchased an Olympus OM-D E-M1 and 12-40 2.8 lens. I did a test run, and the pictures I pulled up on the computer didn't look any different than my full frame cameras.
Awesome. They made a lot of hype to promote FF cameras. But a little skill crushes the difference.
@@adventureStaley Actually, I just remembered that my first "pro" digital camera was an Olympus E-20N with a 5 megapixel 1 2/3" sensor. Back then, I didn't know the difference between sensors, and the dude at the camera store said people compare that camera with the quality of a Leica, and people print 16x20" prints with ease. I printed some that size and they looked amazing!!
I love your portraits. I noticed you like to sometimes come in tight on the persons face, even cropping out the top of their heads. I can't get enough of that!
Thanks for posting these videos!!
You really are going to make me end up going back to MFT, aren't you. Sometimes I wish I hadn't jumped ship, the images from MFT are just.. beautiful. It's crazy how comfortable one gets with the system, so quickly. On that note, do you think it makes sense to go for the G9 II? Or just stick with the original G9?
Haha. I never had a G9 but the II is pretty great. The autofocus and IS are amazing.
Awesome stuff!
Amazing images 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Thank you 🙌
Great images!
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Great video! Thank you!
🙏🏼🙏🏼
This video makes me want to switch to 4/3 from full frame. 😆
Haha. Go.
How come you got rid of the Pana 20mm? That lens is awesome!!
I got rid of all my m43 gear for about 6 years. Was only shooting full frame.
@@adventureStaley I see. Gald to have you back. 🙂
Wonderful work, subbed.
Much appreciated!
10:28 which lens you have used here? On your daughter's photo? It looks soo majestic and 3 dimensional
Thank you. That was the awesome Olympus 45mm 1.8. Made so many great portraits with it but this is a fave. Obviously. It’s on my wall at home. The key here is light and controlling the contrast in the edit.
@@adventureStaley thanks for the quick reply. Its been a while since u have posted this and still u communicate with the viewers. And i came back to this video after a while when i remembered how amazing this was. The portion where u talk about the background of these people, even after so much years, it amazes me how much u r remembering about these people, their names and all. (Considering how bad am on recalling names if people 😂). How passionately u are talking about these people along with showing these amazing portraits where it seems they are looking right at as was making me feel a connection with these strangers. Like i could touch their soul or their memory or something. Am an artist and i have seldon felt this in photographs but more on paintings. And the music accompanying was spot on as well. I think that also had a part in making me feel all this. I would like to see more from you. The stories of your favorite portraits and more. Looking forward to these. Am also a very young amateur photographer also and this video has inspired me soo much i must say. I was not that much into portraits, but now am feeling like i should try to take more pictures of people.
@@reeshmalms6686I appreciate the kind words man. Really connecting with people and capturing a great portrait is the best thing to me. You will like what is coming soon on the channel. Thank you very much.
Very nice video... although I have to admit that the music in the background is a wee bit creepy
Noted
It is my choice when it comes to portraits... the Old 45
Goof choice!
Sensor size is a personal preference, technical arguments are pointless. I shoot FF because I come from 35mm, I just like all my cameras to act & feel the same. I but just bought my son a Fuji xt-30 II to learn manual photography. Not sure why we are so judgmental about the tools artists use. I’ve never heard anyone get church lady about the brushes Monet used.
YES
m43 rocks, awesome portraits.
Thank ya
I think it’s all about access not cameras or lenses
Access is definitely key. Thank you.
Dude. Wow.
Dude. Thanks.
An affordable, fast MFT lens will produce great portraits.
Agree
Forgot: subbed.
Appreciate it
Do you use flash? How do you always get the twinkle in their eyes? The reflection in the eyes
These are almost all available light. I pay close attention to where the light is coming from when I frame a shot.
@@adventureStaley hah! Clearly I was overthinking the obvious 😂
Thank you kindly for replying 🙏 and absolutely breathtaking images. I hope to one day gain the confidence to take portraits, regardless of if the results end up half as good as yours. Beautiful 👌
@@dedclownsRfunny Dive in. SO much fulfilment waits on the other side of that fear...
@@adventureStaley thanks for the encouragement 😊 I reckon I’ll get there 😎
I like your shirt…
Thank ya
Did you ever use Sigma 56mm 1.4?
Nope. Love sigma though
Do you do Hand held high res when you do portraits?
Nope.
Noooooo, don't tell M43 is awesome, if this video goes viral, the second hand lenses will cost a lot more. Just say like every YT that m43 is dead!😂 I have an EM 5, Pen F and some EPL. I ve got the lumix 20mm, the panaleica 15mm and the sigma 56mm 1.4, I've got also the 75mm 1.8 (amazing). I find the DoF an advantage: a portrait at 1.4 has a lot more DoF then FF, so both eyes are in focus.
I’m not cool enough to effect any change. Haha.
thank you for not showing cats
Haha
Please rethink placement of the mic, the rubbing kills my ears.
Find Hannah!
Yeah. I’ve tried….
