What I’ve learned: this dude does whatever the f*** he wants. Dude is an artist.
Give this man a writer and an indiegogo campaign right now.
I'm a late-comer to Tim's legacy and also this interview. I feel badly that he's apparently living hand to mouth despite having such a storied career. I also feel like a crowd-funded Faust collected edition would be gangbusters. I can only imagine that the reason no publisher has as of yet collaborated with him on making it happen is that there's something about Tim that's anathema to the standard processes of publishing. Too much violence? Too much sex? Seems absurd to think that these would be prohibitive concerns in this day and age, but what do I know? If anything is true, it's that Tim is a real outlaw artist, through and through.
He can totally do self publising and run Indigogo campaign, tons of comic artists are doing it and got great results. He can do additional Faust merch, statues, figures, you name it. Can totally run it on Indigogo. There are people all over the globe that knows his work. I've known Faust since the 90s and have barely seen any awesome merch for it. Or even just make new volumes and people will back it.
Wow, that was a hell of an interview. I met Tim and David at a con in the 90s when Faust was about the most infamous book being published at the team. David was more cheerful but Tim was kind of intense. He did a sketch of Faust for me and I bought the first issue of Love of the Damned (as a college student that was as far as my budget went). It was wild for it's time and still has an impact today. I'd love to get the rest of them and read the full story. Someone needs to get Tim on kickstarter or something so he can get those collections together.
I remember Jim Lee was at the con too and he spent a while chatting to Tim and David. I didn't see it but a friend of mine said he bought a load of stuff there. Maybe Tim is the artist's artist!
Outlaw comic's King!!!
A real artist, living with the struggle but unwavering in his pursuit.
What a great interview. Seems like a no bullshit kind of guy, I like him. Great works guys. Thanks for this.
Hell yeah, boys! Tim has been helping my mind rot since I was 11.
This guy is an incredible interview! He’s a punk rock artist…though he doesn’t seem to know it…or want to connect to that idea.
This interview is gold.I been listening this interview several times. Please, bring Vigil back again.
I now understand why Jim and Ed's eyes were bugged out after doing this
Me and my bro met Tim at NYCC a couple years back. He's a cool dude. We picked up some prints of his, and checked out his x-rated Batman portfolio while he sat there drawing and grinning fiendishly at our nervous laughter
Sick with a cold and got the chance to listen to this, today. I met Tim in 95 at San Diego Comic Con. I bought a bunch of Faust comics. I was there with my portfolio. The owner of Island Fantasy on Vancouver Island said my work resembled Tim's work on Faust, so I was stoked to hear what he thought. He said to put a short story together and let him know when it was ready, but I couldnt come up with anything. I actually called him to see if he had anything I could use. He was really cool to me, and it is a great memory I have. I fucking hate that he isnt living well off his past work.
Damn, you guys are killing it! It’s great to listen to the creator’s perspectives presented in such a real way. Great shit as always! Faust omnibus when though? I would Indiegogo the shit out that.
Pretty good audio. Believe me this is priceless if English is not your mother language.
This interview broke my heart.
This is the rawest, most honest thing I've ever seen. Nearly crashed my car when he came out with "people don't like me. I don't know why" because I started bawling.
I'm:not a fan of Vigil's subject matter. Honestly, it disturbs me. But I cannot deny that he has tremendous talent, and has put in the work. They guy leaves it all on the page, and I can't think of higher praise. I don't like much what he draws, but I admire him.
That was incredible.
The wisdom dropped when he talks about artists needing self awareness is priceless. But it’s something you can never teach, I think it’s something that takes many many long hours at the board before you really hear that inner voice...
Most underrated artist, and one of the best. A real craftsman. Thanks for the interview.
Just caught this. Excellent in depth interview with a legend. It'd be awesome to see more of his comics available digitally. Nice call out to the obscure comic, Fat Ninja & Verotik Comics. 👍
Awesome!! I've always wondered about the inside story of Tim Vigil and Silverwolf. Never found much info on it until finally hearing it from this. Great interview Ed!! Cheers!!!
Been waiting all damn day for this!
You guys rock. I love listening to interviews like this. Tim is the man - but GOD DAMN, listening to him chew gum while talking is killing me.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Tim several times through the years. Really enjoyed this interview as it got more details on some questions I’ve asked him & some others I hadn’t thought of.
Tim Vigil is such a great and underrated artist. I have most but not all of his comics. Would love to see him put out a Faust: Love of the Damned collection. I think Kickstarter or Indiegogo would be a great way to go to get the funding to get that done and I'm sure you guys would probably help him promote that to get it funded. By the way, great interview and this channel is the best comics channel on UA-cam. I love that you guys aren't afraid to talk some trash but there's still a ton of positivity. Even when there's some trash talk about companies and artists it never seems to come from a negative place, but rather a fun one. I've been pushing this channel to all my comics reading friends. It was the Alan Moore videos that brought me here, but things like this interview and the Wizard coverage and the weekly wrap ups have made me appreciate and love the channel even more.
It's nice being on the west coast because everything is 3 hours early. Didn't see the Kaluta influence in his work until he mentioned The Studio. Nice!
I've met him quite often. Used to do a LOT of Heroes Con. Have two pieces of artwork from him... one of Claire and one of Kia. Will always respect someone who is brave enough to draw what THEY want.
What an incredible interview!
I was lucky enough to meet Tim and David several times over the years. In the late '90s in an Ohio (or Michigan?) comic convention Tim and David (and Darrell Donald!) took me and a friend along to a strip club (or we took them, it was my friend's car). At the time he was my idol and that moment meant the world to me. It was even better because I was underage (19 or 20?) but I had a fake ID I used to get into the club. Tim bought me a lap dance. I am now a professional graphic designer and illustrator and Tim was a big inspiration to me. Thank you for doing this incredible interview. And thank you to Tim and David (and Darrell!) for giving a then young fan the time of his life!
It gutted me when Tim says he lives in poverty. :(
I need to find a way to send him money. Not for a drawing or anything, just to say thanks for being an inspiration.
Enjoyed the interview, and would like to see more in the future. It was interesting to hear some of his background, art philosophy, and the such. I wish IDW, Image, or someone would collect his work.
I'm not surprised that he believes comic book can be art - it shows in his level of dedication. Fantastic video guys! Thanks for introducing me to his work!
the hollow feeling when no one tells me my marching orders at the end...
seriously though, great interview fellas!
I dig Tim. He's a real no bs type of guy.
I see a creepy reflection of my potential future. Great interview, my dudes!
I just wanted to comment here a big thank you to Tim Vigil for not only all his amazing artwork but his taking the time to share so deeply and honestly in this interview and on camera at that. Than you Cartoonist Kayfabe and thank you Tim - This is great and I, as an independent comic creator, putting my life into this, learned a lot and just love this interview. Take care.
Great interview. Faust was a great book and it had a big impact, at least among my friends, back in the 90’s.
Thanks for putting this up guys.
I've only recently gotten hip to Tim Vigil recently because of this channel. As such, I had no idea he's also a Sacramento guy :O I found some videos of him doing some drawing demos on Art Guides channel that are terrific. Great interview!
I thought the two issues of EO were more intense than the entire run of Faust. And it sounds like it would’ve far gotten worse going by a description of a scene he talks about in this interview.
Great interview and I enjoyed his candid responses.
Great interview with Tim Vigil. I have some signed Fausts back in the mid 90's when I was in Seattle. Thanks Ed and Jim.
You're doing the Lords work here chaps xxx
I think I've waited over two decades for this insight into Tim's work-just so raw with corkscrew to the heart revelations.
Poverty? No justice man.
Respect the uncomprimised.
All the love
A master of the craft and seemingly a cool dude great work
What a great guy. I have to read his comics at some point. I love his art and honesty
I like this guy. I keep coming back to this interview and find new stuff everytime.
I would love to see Tim return to Grips at some point.
For Grips to truly return, it would have to be Tim Vigil. The potential of the first Silverwolf Grips issue #1 has never been fully realized...... but its not too late!
Mr. Vigil? Please.....?
great interview.TV & Faust blew up back then.
Man, this is fantastic! Loved every minute of it. Great job, guys!
Congratulations on this one, guys. Truly extraordinary, inspiring interview.
Sick! Danzig!
We were discussing Tim's work the other night and we agreed that his work would look great in sculpture.
Can you imagine an XM studios Faust sculpture!
Thank you, this was awesome.
Thank you Ed and Jim and Tim
This interview is amazing but it’s super upsetting to hear that Tim Vigil is living in poverty with no one to help him put together his Faust collections.
Most artists live and die in poverty. While exploitive hustlers like Stan Lee or Bob Kane make millions off of their work.
Thanks for producing such a great interview, Ive been a fans of Tims since the Grips days, always a pleasure to see him at shows, such an incredible artist. I think he should definitely kickstarter a new project.
Love Tim Vigil's art since early 90's, I guess it was. The Danzig cat ear story had me laughing so much...the way Tim tells it is great.
So much amazing info on the independent comic industry from a true legend. Thanks guys!
Man still reeling by how great this is.
Tim looking good my friend, thanks for the cool stories
Great interview, always loved Faust and followed Tim though his career! Great shit!
Awesome!
Joe Vigil! We looked at a couple of your original art pages from Dog in this video: ua-cam.com/video/5PpajkqcbWg/v-deo.html
Wrote this in another reply comment, but gonna throw it here as well.
Big fan of Tim’s work and am lucky enough to have published pin-ups from both he and Tim Tyler. Great interview! Always loved Tim’s candor from talking to him at cons over the years. Pretty thorough history though I believe work for Blue Comet may predate the Silverwolf material. Subscribed!
Great interview!!
Thank you as always this is priceless.
Yes!
I love his honesty candor and art! Dude is so underrated! I pray that he prospers. 👍👍Thanks for this helluva interview. 💪💪💪🦾🦾🦾💪💪💪💪👍
Subscribed. This is awesome content. Thanks for making it happen.
Thank you Tim!
This was so fuckin great!! Thanks for this!
Would love to hang out at that Starbucks and just marvel at his drawing! Met him once and interesting guy, little intense and intimidating.
Keep working on Kevin Nowlan! He's such a fantastic under-known artist.
Yes! Thanks!
The man is a fuckin legend. Total commitment to The Muse. Cartoonist Kayfabe costs me money! Gone on an Outlaw Comics buying spree, have got a few Vigil bits. I picked up Grips # 3 and there's an editor's note on the letters page I'm curious about: "Tim has been away doing a stint in the Navy reserves. Thanks for protectin' Mom, apple pie and the flag Tim." . I'm English so don't know much about this - was Tim doing admin/backroom work or did he see active service? (Or is it a gag?). Tom Savini said he learned about gore by being a photographer in the Vietnam war - is this the same sort of deal or am I just letting my imagination run away with me? Interesting, anway...
Gold!
big Vigil fan awesome interview guys
i wish we could get full size posters of those faust covers.
They made some posters back when the first Rebel edition reprints started, so they are out there...just gotta hunt them down.
Incredible interview. Tim is a huge influence on me. It's funny, because 'EO' seems to, universally, have a negative reaction with some women. The book cause a huge fight in my own household. My girlfriend at the time, declared that I wasn't to bring any other "filth" like that into our home. I explained that there IS no other filth like 'EO,' and then I told her she can f*** off (it was a different time).
Loved the batman book. DC black label shoot!
Lisa said she could hear me laugh during the claws joke that Ed made!
I need to listen to this again, shirtless.
This is gold🤘🏼
His work really is masterful... I don't think he gets the respect he deserves because of the subject matter. Makes you wonder tho. How did guys like Clive Barker rise to fame during the same time period... What did the celebrated horror guys do that he didn't...?
@@xombiekat13 True I think he would have been been better off selling his books to other distributeurs than comicbook stores, like headshops and rock/metalstores. Metalheads love his work. You put a stack of Faust comics on a table and they'll sell.
Jerame Farnum I think the biggest problem is that he doesn't publish enough. Most people aren't familar with his work and a lot of stuff that does get published isn't what he does best, it's a tamer watered down version. Also a lot of his beautiful pencils get butchered by not so talented inkers.
@@peterhopkins4602 Somehow, I'm not surprised.
i read in an interview Brian Yuzna(director of faust, and some cool stuff like Society and Guyver) wanted the rights to make a DEVILMAN movie, but couldnt for whatever reason. I think the transformation in the movie Faust was made like devilman (not a costume)
i think it would've been better with a higher budget, but Yuzna already had a really goofy sensibility in his movies. Screaming Mad George did some sfx and his work is usually top tier and gross, and wet. but he was working with not too much budget. It IS weird there was a lack of violence
Can I say that I really like the framing of this shot?
big ups to joe vigil ...respect
a damn hero.
Too bad EO issues 3 and 4 will never be made. I really loved nrs 1 & 2. Some of his best work!
Can't he find a different writer to finish the story?
I love TIm.
Tim's talking about the incestuous relationship in Millar/Hitch's The Ultimates. Tim has a point.
The hypocrisy of the mainstream.
When the creator of Faust goes 'what the fuck man?', you crossed a line somewhere
Someone get this man an indiegogo
Rhythm nation shit.
I only go to cons here in FL when I see Tim on the list. I just want a sketch, pick up a few things he's selling etc. I actually hate cons lol.
One hour, twenty-nine minutes and forty two seconds, that's when he gets deep.
Is there a trade paperback of Faust or one in the works?
i used to shoulder tap bums to buy faust comics when i was 10.
someone help him kickstart or indiegogo his Faust stuff or other things I'd 100% back
Fuck yeah! I love that he listens to Janet Jackson lol!
54:05 - I think cvr 8 is awesome!
At 1 hour and 17 minutes, SHIT HITS REAL CLOSE TO HOME... until he talks about people calling him a master... nobody ever says that shit about me.
HELL YEAH!!!!........... HEAVY FUCKIN DUTY!!
Love this 👍🏼👍🏼
1:13:37 I think like this all the time also.
1:17:00 FUCKING REALLLLLLLL
