It's so funny hearing Gibbons apologize for going on too long about things when, as an audience, this it the type of shit (actual content) we live for & couldn't have even dreamed of years ago. Great work, guys.

Exactly, this is the kind of thing that nourishes our geeky, obsessive little souls. Any anecdote, any insight, any thought about such a genius on what is a masterpiece is wonderful and important. I almost cried a couple of times, I had goosebumps throughout the interview. I mean, fucking Watchmen, man! It's the seminal work of western comics. It definitely is my own favorite comic. This was beautiful. I'll watch this video over a couple of times.

This is such an amazing document for comic book fans, Watchmen fanatics, Ed & Jim, Dave Gibbons, everyone else involved with the production of the 12 issue run, and yes, even Alan Moore. What an absolute treat...You guys should consider a DVD or Blu-Ray set that collects all 12 episodes, and You couldn't have ended any better. It amazes me how down to earth and unassuming Dave Gibbons is despite his legendary output. I can’t wait to get a look at his autobiography. In your SRB interview, he mentioned going to England to meet Alan Moore and being surprised to see that Alan was also doing thumbnails for his Swamp Thing stories. I wonder if he had done the same for Watchmen (this may be covered in WTW) and if Dave ever saw them. The Kayfabe team delivering the coup de grace for the end of the year. Looking forward to see what 2022 has in store.

    • @gabrieljimenez9762
      @gabrieljimenez9762 2 роки тому

I think I've heard interviews where it's mentioned that Moore does do thumbnails (or at least did in the earlier days) for him to get a better idea for the script and how to write it. I guess that's how he gets to give such a vivid and detailed description when he's already sort of seen it.

Fucking hell, I think I have a new favorite CK video (sorry Sergio). This was majestic, it deserves to be submitted to the Library of Congress for preservation, or at least into that University in Michigan State (?). Not only have your reviews of Watchmen been superb, but you guys giving us this prize is marvelous.
Your prior interview with Dave was very interesting and he is very generous with his time, comments and anecdotes. To have him going over this book with both of you... no words. You can tell he was very happy and comfortable with you both. I'm very glad that you both were able to convey the awe that he deserves. His reading of Moore's script was great, because we get to hear how detailed and evocative he writes to his artist, but also because we see how Dave interpreted it and made it his own. I get the feeling that Moore knows very well that he asks for impossibilities and he almost wants to know what the artist comes up with; I get the feeling that he gives the artist room for interpretation. Fantastic stuff.
Mentally, I was begging Jim or Ed to ask Dave to read Moore's script for the last panel... god, that was glorious.

Love, Love, Love the channel. I have been following along with your commentary since you started. I've always been an avid reader and cinephile so I love how this channel provides a space for an academic conversations that you would find in any college course that analyzes fiction. That being said, I hope I can put in my two cents and have hopefully have one of my "Peers" help me understand the work better.
    1) Gibbons' reveal that that Adrian's victory pose on pg. 19 actually symbolizes the hands of a clock is mind blowing. Using this I want to point out something that this channel might have accidentally omitted. His arms are at 5 minutes to midnight. At the beginning of the Issue the clock is exactly at midnight. So after his unspeakable act and the panicked world peace that ensues, Adrian has succeeded in bringing back the clock five minutes. That is still dangerously close to destruction, however, and as Dr. Manhattan says, nothing ever ends.
    2) Right before Rorshach is disintegrated and he says Do it one final time, his word bubble is no longer wavy but uniform. Is this to suggest that this was a final sane thought from Rorschach? His lucid realization that he needed to be put down like a rabid dog? I just noticed it was not addressed.
    3) One last remark. I remember as a kid I never understood the whole alien thing. I always felt it came out of nowhere. I did not remember the whole psychic clone thing actually until a recent re-reading of the final issue I picked up at a swap meet. But this psychic guy they used to create the alien, Robert Deschaines, was he mentioned in a previous issue or in the back matter?
I lost my original TPB and have not gotten around to re-buying it. I know they mention the Institute of Inter-spatial Studies and the an artist collective working on something big but other than that it all seems to come out of left field. I know many have criticized the ending. I even recall an interview with another comic book creator who read an early draft of the script and advised him to change it. Don't remember who it was. It might have been during the Gibbons interview or someone else, Valentino comes to mind though that might be unlikely. The interview was either here or on Comic Tropes since those are the only comic channels I follow.
Moore, of course, refused and we ended up getting that pretty cool squid alien. But I still thought it was weird. Rugg has even said that it was strange people would not have figured it out as soon as they analyzed it. I guess Veidt employees might help cover it up, but wouldn't Adrian just have to keep killing people? Now I guess I might get lose some credibility here, but I actually prefer the ending in the Watchmen movie. Hear me out.
I read the book well before the movie came out in theaters, even before I had any idea it was in production, so this isn’t a case where my original perception has been tainted by the movie. I even tried to trick my friends into thinking I saw it by just going off what I read in the book. My mom wouldn’t take me to watch it because it was rated R, go figure. Of course when I mentioned the alien my whole story fell apart. When I did see it, there where parts where I definitely thought they dropped the ball but the ending always made more narrative sense to me. With Dr. Manhattan being the reason for the attacks, Humanity has a more tangible threat than some vague inter-dimensional creature. Everyone on earth knows what Osterman is like. He could be viewed as angry about the media barrage he received after he did so much for the world. Simply an angry God enacting his wrath. And the attack taking place in several cities only serves to bolster every countries allegiance. It also gives a good reason for Manhattan to never return to Earth since doing so would only trigger world wide panic.
I might be mistaken though and this ending might have been foreshadowed issues in advanced. Has anyone found any Easter eggs or hints?
P.S. Could Adrian himself be a low-grade psychic? He does seem to have some sort of connection with the boy reading the Black Freighter at the newsstand or at least someone familiar with the comic. On pg. 27 he does recount some jumbled imagery from the finale of the fictional comic when he meets with Jon one final time. Maybe he wasn't lying about feeling the deaths of all those people.
Some input from some would be appreciated. Once again, awesome content. Thank you.

1:35:50 - Oh, Naoki Urasawa, the creator of Manben that you're referring to here, he has a UA-cam channel! Manben is a great series, by the way. Love it.
Oh my GOD, the Alan Moore script needs to be published! Hopefully along the pages Gibbons drew and Higgins colored! Somebody needs to do it! I mean, we need to see it!

The story, the ingenuity of the characters and how real they feel, the colour pallete, the naturalistic styling... a grand slam out of the park.

I like that the illustrators' perspective on this channel is foremost in y'all's content (something other comic book channels don't thoroughly address). I could tell Master Gibbons was stoked to look back on his old work and you conducted the interview/read-thru masterfully!!

I don't know if he'll mention it but the handles of the two hoverpads look like birds of prey which is cited in the All Along the Watchtower quote I think

This video is amazing. Having read Watchmen perennially for the last 20 years, Dave added new things I've never caught on my 20+ reads of the book.
Also, the notes on colors to me demand a side-by-side reading of an original issue and a recolored issue to discuss the changes. Even better if John could join that one!

Hearing Gibbons read (what i assume are) Moore's original script notes was awesome. Even more awesome hearing him work out how the hell he's gonna translate a paragraph of flowery Moore prose into a single panel. What a commentary.
