    My grandmother came to England from Iasi in Rumania around 1900 with her husband who came from Besarabia and my mother (born 1910) used to say how as a child she would eat "mamalige mit kaise mit pitte (phonetic spelling of course) that's yiddish for Polenta with cheese and butter, Gone but not forgotten. @@mariarusu2382, in comentariul la care faceam eu referire se , spunea (citez): "Mămăligă is mămăligă invented from antiqiti produced from Mălai". Deci, accentuez: INVENTED from ANTIQITI, PRODUCED from MALAI". ASTA mi se pare aiurea, sa spui ca mamaliga a fost INVENTATA in ANTICHITATE si PRODUSA din MALAI, odata ce MALAIUL (porumbul) a fost descoperit abia la 1492, odata cu descoperirea Americii. Desigur ca in Europa se manca INAINTE de aia terci ("mamaliga" daca vreti) din ALTE cereale, inclusiv mei, cum spuneti dvs, dar eu contestam partea aia cu mamaliga "inventata din antichitate si produsa din MALAI"...

    The singer in the version uploaded here is Moishe Oysher,
    born in Lipcani, Bessarabia (now Moldova) and was well known among Jewish communities in The U.S. and South America as Cantor, Singer and Star of Yddish movies.

    • @lsmart
      @lsmart 7 років тому +11

      Sir, even if you did not notice the title of the upload, it should have been rather easy to identify from the singer's voice that it is the great Aaron Lebedoff, and NOT the likewise unforgettable Moishe Oysher. Indeed, this was literally Lebedoff's theme song, like Nessun Dorma to Luciano Pavarotti. While Oysher was very flexible and also great in Yiddish theatrical songs, his voice was about three times as hefty as Lebedoff's. The only phrase on which one might reasonably confuse the two singers is in the high note at 5:20, when he artificially bulks up his voice.

    Dressed in rags and tatters;
    She makes a pudding for the Sabbath.
    Zets! Tay ti didl di tam …
    Moyshe Khayim comes along
    And takes away the best part;

    And the girl pouts, alas,
    Seems unwilling, but allows it.

    Oy poyim vestri trey mashlini,
    Ashum bidar lekhmutchini,
    Ekhley gutsi, ekhley gutsi
    Tey yu beste makh-ma-chev -
    are actually some Romanian verses:
    Ai, foaie verde, trei măsline,
    (M-)Aș iubi, dar n-am cu cine,
    E drăguță, e frăguță,
    Te iubesc de mă sfârșesc.
    Oh, green leaf,(and) three olives,
    I would love (make love), but I don't have who(m to),
    She is pretty, she is (like a) mulberry,
    I love you until I am finished.

    first half:
    Translation:
    Rumania, Rumania
    Oh! Rumania, Rumania, Rumania …
    Once there was a land, sweet and lovely.
    Oh! Rumania, Rumania, Rumania …
    Once there was a land, sweet and fine.
    To live there is a pleasure;
    What your heart desires you can get;
    A mamalige, a pastrami, a karnatzl,
    And a glass of wine, aha … !
    Ay, in Rumania life is so good;
    No one knows of care;
    Everywhere they’re drinking wine -
    And having a bite of kashtaval.
    Hay, digadi dam …
    Ay, in Rumania life is so good;
    No one knows of worry.
    They drink wine, though it’s late;
    And have a bite of kastrovet.
    Hay, digadi dam …
    Oh, my, help, I’m going crazy!
    I care only for brinze and mamalige
    I dance and jump up to the ceiling
    When I eat a patlazhele.
    Dzing ma, tay yidldi tam …
    What a pleasure, what could be better!
    Oh, the only delight is Rumanian wine.
    Rumanians drink wine
    And eat mamalige;
    And he who kisses his own wife,
    Is the one who’s crazy.
    Zets, dzing ma, tay yidl di tam …
    “May salvation come from heaven … “
    Stop and kiss the cook, Khaye,
    Dressed in rags and tatters;
    She makes a pudding for the Sabbath.
    Zets! Tay ti didl di tam …
    Moyshe Khayim comes along
    And takes away the best part;
    Moyshe Khayim, Borukh Shmil -
    Tickle her on the sly.
    Zets! Tay tidl di tam …
    And the girl pouts, alas,
    Seems unwilling, but allows it.
    Tshu!
    It’s good to kiss a lass
    When she’s sweet sixteen;
    When one kisses an old main,
    She begins to grumble.
    Zets! Tay yidl di dam …
    What a pleasure, what could be better!
    Oh, the only delight is Rumanian wine …

    This is the version I was looking for. When I was a child, I had a 78 rpm recording of Roumania, Roumania. I was very close to my father's father (a Litvak) who lived in the same town. We would sometimes visit my mother's mother (a Galitzianer) in another city. It was very rare that these two grandparents would be in the same room. Once they were both visiting us. First I played the record for my grandfather who was not super religious. He warned me not to play it for my grandmother because she was very religious and this record would be too risque for her. But I was naughty and played it anyway. Most of the Yiddish was too hard for me to understand but I remembered "Galitzianers makhen gelt, Litvaks kinder" which got a humorous response. Today I was looking for the words of the entire song. Many sites claimed they had the complete words but seemed incomplete to me. I did not know there was more than one version. Is there a transcription of the words of this version anywhere? The Yiddish lyrics with English translation would be even better.

    at 4:52 Aaron Lebedeff sings two phrases in Russian.
    They are very colloquial:
    "Ay, shtot, shtot, shtot, shtot - [ya i sam devyatyj rot],
    Khotchet lyubit, khotchet dyevka, ni kopeki, dyengi nyet!"
    The general sense is:" Why! My family is big and I am in a poor condition!
    Make your choice! I have no money a cent!"
    Anyway, the singer pronounces these Russian words with proper intonation as if he drives his hard bargain in a trade.
    The performance of this song is really an artistic masterpiece!

    Jews had 2 speak Russian Romanian and Ukrainian if they lived near Romanian border + wanted 2 do well in any kind of business and often married Jews from Romania (my grandmother was from \Bessarabia which was in Romania at the time)as my grandfather who was from Podolia in Ukraine did. Therefore songs included words from more than 1 language
    as Jews adopted names of foods in different languages into Yiddish depending where they lived. e.g. Perogi, Varanaka: Perogi is Polish + Varanaka Ukrainian.

    This is a much more complicated rendition that the other version he recorded. Moreover, the song was considered quite racy and almost dirty for it's time. I know the song well but never have I heard so many unfamiliar verses added to it. It's a difficult song to bring off, but Lebedeff nails it.

      +galolito - I am able to understand SOME of it, but not enough of it. I truly don't understand how he managed to pull this off. The earlier 1941 version is downright "tame" next to this one. I heard an interview with him a few years ago and was shocked to hear that he spoke English with a British accent. He had quite a career in Europe, China, and in the Yiddish Theater. He was also an accomplished classical concert pianist who specialized in Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. He lived a good and long life, and was appreciated by many in his time. But THIS version of Rumania is positively definitive.

      +gabriel ion - Thanks for adding the final piece of the puzzle! I understand Yiddish fairly well, and I've known this song since I was a kid, but this additional verses stymied me to the point of distraction, though I like the "sound" of the words. I'm amazed that Lebedeff could bring this off. He DOES allude to the city of Bucharest, which, of course, is the Romanian capital. But then he reverts back to Jewish. Whatever, it's an amazing rendition.

      Larry Mitchell With pleasure.
      In ,,Mémoires des Juifs de Roumanie" (Chebana/Mercier Mure-Ravaud, p.22) this song is described as a very popular folk-song sung by the Jews of Romania emigrated to Israel, heavy with great nostalgia for ,,the good life" they had once known during the ,,better" interbellum period and which omits any hint of the oppression forced upon them by the Romanian state prior to what was seen by many as this ,,Golden Era". Those who remembered this ,,good life" (somewhat idealized), passed their memories through stories and songs such as this on to their children and grandchildren who, sooner or later, would forget the Romanian language and the ,,beautiful Carpathian country".

    It’s actually “Româneshte Buchareshti…” meaning the language “Romanian” and then Bucharest

    Is there a Romanian version of this song? I remember hearing it at parties when I was growing up. And there weren't many Jewish people where I grew up.
    I understand some words to be honest and I could find the translation but I'd like to know if there's this song in Romanian.
    Thank you!

    I first heard this song when I saw Mr. Saturday Night. The music filled my ears with this wonderful music and I've been trying to discover what the name of the song was. Now I've found it here and I want to thank you for posting it! I'm even going to play this for my students so they can experience a tiny taste of Jewish culture.

      Hi Cool...many years ago, I had a music shop specializing in Jewish Music. I got a call from a film company looking for a recording of this song...I got them to use This version in "Mr. Saturday Night".... This song has been recorded by numerous artists. I also produced a Jewish Music compilation, "Jewish Soul; The Heart & Soul of Jewish Music", and included this song, sung by EARTHA KITT. You can view it on Amazon... www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004CP7T8A?ref%5F=sr%5F1%5F1&qid=1473360738&sr=8-1&keywords=jewish%20soul%20%20the%20heart%20and%20soul&pldnSite=1

    This song reminds me somehow of "Ciocarlia" by George Enescu...

    • @FreedomAlternative
      @FreedomAlternative 7 років тому +2

      Might as well be related.
      George Enescu was still alive at the time when this song was written. It could even be the case that ”Ciocârlia” was inspired by this song.

    Romania, Romania (English)
    Oh! Romania, Romania, Romania …
    Once there was a land, sweet and lovely.
    Oh! Romania, Romania, Romania …
    Once there was a land, sweet and fine.
    To live there is a pleasure;
    Whate'er your heart desires is yours;
    Mamaliga, pastrami, sausages,
    And a glass of wine, aha … !
    Ay, in Romania life's so good;
    No one has a care in the world;
    Everywhere they’re drinking wine -
    And having a bite of cascaval.
    Hay, digadi dam …
    Ay, in Romania life is so good;
    No one has a care in the world.
    They drink wine, though it’s late;
    And enjoy a plate of pickles.
    Hay, digadi dam …
    Oh, my, help, I’m going crazy!
    I care only for cheese and mamaliga
    I dance and leap to the stars
    When I eat a patlazhele.
    Dzing ma, tay yidldi tam …
    What a pleasure, what could be better!
    Oh, the only delight is Romanian wine.
    Romanians drink wine
    And eat mamaliga;
    And he who kisses his own wife,
    Is completely nuts.
    Zets, dzing ma, tay yidl di tam …
    “May salvation come from heaven … “
    Stop and kiss the cook, Khaye,
    Dressed in rags and tatters;
    She makes a pudding for the Sabbath.
    Zets! Tay ti didl di tam …
    Moyshe Khayim comes along
    And takes away the best part;
    Moyshe Khayim, Borukh Shmil -
    Tickle her on the sly.
    Zets! Tay tidl di tam …
    And the girl pouts, alas,
    Seems unwilling, but allows it.
    Tshu!
    It’s good to kiss a lass
    When she’s sweet sixteen;
    If she kisses an old man,
    She'll only grumble.
    Zets! Tay yidl di dam …
    What a pleasure, what could be better!
    Oh, the only delight is Romanian wine …
