This content brings your original target subscribers back to your channel. Engine room tours of private yachts are very rare. Seeing the top side luxury part is common. Like a hotel tour. 5 star hotels dont have an engine room....
Awesome, this is one of the videos I've actually been hoping you would do as a smaller boat captain! Well done, and would love to see exactly each and every step to see how you transfer fuel, and change oil, etc, love this stuff!!! Thanks again!
It's crazy that Tristan can wear an expensive sweater and give a full tour of an engine room without worrying about ruining his clothes. It's not normal for an engine room to be so clean!
Hi Tristan and crew. Having recently serviced and repainted and installed a D6 engine for my brother. Installed all pipework, exhaust, heat exchanger, seacocks etc. I can say it's been a challenge from fitting engine beds to completion. Your knowledge of Awol is extensive, no question you are No1 Super Yacht Captain. Great video. Thanks.
I bet I’m not the only follower of this channel who would rather spend my time on board AWOL down here than in the beach club. Maybe a bit of time on the bridge. Occasionally. Just so Tristan can go to the loo and get a coffee.
So many thanks Tristan. I personally have been waiting so long for this and obviously the previous one on the control room. It all makes sense now to where all the machines are placed for the balance.
Tristan, Great video 👍. I have a small 50' Sea Ray and love taking friends and family out for day trips or weekend runs... everyone has a great time and so do I. But if they only knew what it takes to keep everything going in good condition. My most favorite time is when I'm down in my little engine room. Cleaning screens , changing oil ect.... Absolutely love it!! Your engineer is one lucky bastard 😂. I'm jealous.
Great video never get bored with the engine room. I hope as time goes on you will have videos on fiberglass repair( damage done last summer) painting , varnishing and polishing. Also a tour of the bridge ( radar , navigation systems etc...) and a brief demonstration on Bridge Resource Management.
Finally Friday and a new vlog from Tristan, is interested in a more detailed explanation of the water machine, how it is cleaned etc. Good sound with separate mick 👍.
I hate to say it Tristan but that engine room looks like a doll house compared to a mansion when I think about the engine room I worked in aboard the steam powered naval vessel I was on in the 60s.
Cool. Saw some equipment that I hadn't seen before. Thanks for the video and detailed explanation of what is and how the systems work. Hope you also get some time to enjoy the holidays. I know last winter you were busy with the refit. Am missing not seeing the other crew members around. Yes they deserve a break. Thanks to you and them, AWOL has won several awards. This only happens with a compet ant Captain and crew working as a team.
Sir, Great video The interesting part is that is still only about 20% of the system's on board. You still have billige pumps, and cooling water pumps for the engine's and generator's from the sea chest. As well as gray and black water tanks and discharge pumps. (Outside of ports of course) Then the steering 240v main pumps and i am assuming 24v DC bach up. Fire suppression systems which shuts down ventilation systems. Then 12 and 24 volt systems and 120/240volt systems.the alarm systems, .autmmation systems, entertainment systems, navigation systems. All the bridge controls. I know you were limiting the video to the engine room. Which was great. Even filling the hot tub. My point being is you you could do an entire series of videos 10 to 15 minutes each on all of the different systems on board. I know you have already done a few already. If you ever do come the the Caribbean or Florida area, I would like to meet you and buy a beer or two.
The "manual fuel shut-off" is ALSO used for "run-away"...If any of your viewers don't understand just look up "run away diesel" ( had it happen in my past AND manual fuel/air starvation is the only "fix") CHEERS on another awesome vid!!!!!!!
That was very interesting, thanks Tristan. Just a question, on a typical cruise (full complement) how much water is consumed per day, I'm curious about water capacities etc, thanks again.
Paul Scotchford, depends on consumption but on most vessels that size have water makers. Turns sea water to fresh potable water. I have two on my vessel that make 1500 gallons a day each.
My father was a Chief Engineer on cargo ships and spent more than 40 years on ships starting as an oiler and working his way up through the ranks. I have visited many engine rooms. The engine rooms on the super yachts are amazingly clean, compact and wonders of modern engineering. You may be surprised, however, I think that the super yacht engine rooms are the most fascinating parts of these beautiful ships 🛥
It's to have a source of fuel closer to the genset. There is a requirement that the fuel source has to be within a certain distance from the pump (lift). Fuel is pumped to it from the main tanks with the transfer pump.
Thanks for the tour. One question: while underway you are running the generator constantly? I thought these massive engines create enough power through alternators for all electrical needs...
Very impressive video ! You did a good job of highlighting the cramped quarters in the Engine room As a retired chief engineer, you gave me reason to look back in time & reminisce about a job I loved so much. Do you know if it's feasible to use a small Westphalia centrifuge instead of the Racor filters to remove the bad ju-ju from the lube oil ? The ngine room is beautiful with the shiny shrouds & exhaust covers... Control room too.
As I mentioned on other Vlog, there doesn't seem to be a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) to bridge gap between shore supply going off and gen set starting to run critical equipment, I have one on my 12m electric launch if you need more info!
Alfa Laval make separators, i used to work on them on the big merchant many ships. Talking generators: ideally how much landpower do you need to not have to run on the generators? Also if you have a disruption on the landpower supply will the generator(s) kick-in automatically i.e. are they on standby?
I just purchased a boat with C32acerts. They are now saying that cat recommends changing the aftercoolers after 6-7 years or 1000hrs. Have you guys done that
Hello Mister Captain of Super Yacht Mortlock, I like your Informative and very exciting Videos. When will your professional career with this relatively small yacht end? From when you will be the captain of a larger ship? Best from Lausitz/DE Leo
The video Capt. Mortlock referenced for the engine rebuilds has the details. IIRC, those are also mufflers... I assume 1600 HP put out lots of exhaust and noise. The chrome plating is for show.
Great video ~ you do know your stuff. Caterpillar does make great marine engines the C32 is legendary. I know the engines were rebuilt last winter ~ on average how many hours a year do you put on the engines ? Generators ? Most recreational yachts have pressure gauges on the racers to visually monitor their status and a clear bowl to visually check for water. Do you thing the sensors are better without the clear bowls ~ I think I would like to see both sensors and clear bowls.
Actually BETTER than most U.S. drinking water standards ( + NO chlorine nor fluoride) the "filters" bring the "potable water" down to +/- 50 parts per million contaminants ...(basically dipping your hand in a 100 liter bucket of PURE H2O is all the nasty your going to get)
Hi Tristan, I'm currently living in Malta and am interested in boating/yachts and was wondering what liscences you would need and such. I've seen your crew stories of how you started in port Banus and was wondering if a ICC is enough or what else I would need. As well as how to get started in the industry. Sorry if you've already got a video about it but I couldn't find anything. thanks
I'm curious, and maybe some of this was addressed in previous videos, about the main engine exhaust and if it provides a "bubble cushion" for increased fuel efficiency. Also, what are the large stainless boxes seeming to be part of the exhaust; this is where I'd expect to see air intake.
Great video! In march im going to Antibes to start my yachting career and work as a deckhand would you give me any tips i have STCW 95 , PSA , Dive Master and im 19 years old :) ?
We are Celebrating Thanksgiving! I give thanks for your very enjoyable channel! When do we get to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa? What automobile are you driving while your there? I’m Big Fan of the”Esysman Channel”! He has a couple of Porches! I believe he is a Chief Engineer on an even larger Super Yacht! Maybe you two could get together for a nice Collaboration! He has a lot of knowledge about all the Super Yachts of the World! Thnx! CJ
In the states, in biggest problem is finding a qualified marine mechanic. Outboards=fair, inboards, IO’s = moderate, yachts(gasoline)=difficult, yachts (diesels)=hard, mega yachts= almost impossible to find a knowledgeable/qualified mechanic. You may need to fly a repair crew in, so if you’re not made of money, you educate and fix things yourself. If you let things go, it will fail, most likely at the worst possible time and place. Most high end yachts in the states 10 years and older are in terrible mechanical condition and are not seaworthy.
If your ever in the southeastern US or need service anywhere around the world we are a zf dealer but work on all gears as well as work on Cat's. Feel free to message me or contact ADR Power Systems
If you want to see a REAL engine room find a Hines Farley and ask the Capt.if you can see it. They're as much a work of art as a functioning engine room puts this room to shame.
There's no such thing as "an Alfa LAval" Alfa LAval is the name of a company that makes Fuel purifiers, and there are several other companies that make them.
How can I like this multiple times guys? This channel is golden
We are all helping...
Tristan, you just made my day by giving us a tour of AWOL's engine room. Great job, as always.
This content brings your original target subscribers back to your channel. Engine room tours of private yachts are very rare. Seeing the top side luxury part is common. Like a hotel tour. 5 star hotels dont have an engine room....

Every video is interesting, I'm never bored.

No you're not!
This channel is great ,and the amount of thought you have to put into it ahead of time is much appreciated .
Once again an excellent video Captain.
That was fascinating to see the knowledge you have and to then! Understand why you have to take care of a Yacht such as this! Well done to you all!!
So many thanks Tristan. I personally have been waiting so long for this and obviously the previous one on the control room. It all makes sense now to where all the machines are placed for the balance.

Your a very clever captain ..... that was so in-depth vlog.. well done tris
thanks for all of the great content this year!!!!
Man, Slav does such a good job of looking after the boat
So beautifully sparkling. Well done.
Very educational! Thanks for sharing.
Great video never get bored with the engine room. I hope as time goes on you will have videos on fiberglass repair( damage done last summer) painting , varnishing and polishing. Also a tour of the bridge ( radar , navigation systems etc...) and a brief demonstration on Bridge Resource Management.
Great video, but what is the black box with red knob for on top of the generator? Thanks again, and keep up the great work!
Finally Friday and a new vlog from Tristan, is interested in a more detailed explanation of the water machine, how it is cleaned etc. Good sound with separate mick 👍.
happy holidays tristan
Most engineers call a Blow Out fan an exhaust fan... If you see the squirrel cage grille, you're looking at the air intake.
Very informative, and interesting video !
I hate to say it Tristan but that engine room looks like a doll house compared to a mansion when I think about the engine room I worked in aboard the steam powered naval vessel I was on in the 60s.
Definitely enjoyed this video on the engine room thank you
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great video. I'll watch it a few times. Thanks...

Very informative. Great content !!
How much fuel and oil do you typically use in a season?
My father was a Chief Engineer on cargo ships and spent more than 40 years on ships starting as an oiler and working his way up through the ranks. I have visited many engine rooms. The engine rooms on the super yachts are amazingly clean, compact and wonders of modern engineering. You may be surprised, however, I think that the super yacht engine rooms are the most fascinating parts of these beautiful ships 🛥
Tristan, how warm does it get inside the engine room while the engines are running? I imagine those engines and gens produce a lot of heat.
The water maker looks like a coffee machine, I’ll have a large cappuccino please 😀
Engine room envy! :)
Very interesting
We all need to pitch in and Get Tristan a Mic so he can attach it to his shirt. Cheers Tristan ;)
What's the reason for the Day tank ? Can't you draw fuel from the other tanks directly ?
Love your chanel .
It's to have a source of fuel closer to the genset. There is a requirement that the fuel source has to be within a certain distance from the pump (lift). Fuel is pumped to it from the main tanks with the transfer pump.
@@shanegoulden4298 Thanks
Also the fuel on the day tank is the one that has been filtered.
Thanks for the tour. One question: while underway you are running the generator constantly? I thought these massive engines create enough power through alternators for all electrical needs...

You should use clear bowls on your racors. Easier to keep and eye on fuel cleanliness and water contamination.
Sod been the captain get me in that engine room. #geek
As I mentioned on other Vlog, there doesn't seem to be a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) to bridge gap between shore supply going off and gen set starting to run critical equipment, I have one on my 12m electric launch if you need more info!
Have you seen Captain's Vlig 74?
Alfa Laval make separators, i used to work on them on the big merchant many ships.
Talking generators: ideally how much landpower do you need to not have to run on the generators? Also if you have a disruption on the landpower supply will the generator(s) kick-in automatically i.e. are they on standby?
Are you able to synchronize the two gensets or do you run them on separate buses?
question; where do you guys leave that black smurrie that comes out of the alfa laval?
I just purchased a boat with C32acerts. They are now saying that cat recommends changing the aftercoolers after 6-7 years or 1000hrs. Have you guys done that
Next big trend - RGB lighting in engine-room
Hello Mister Captain of Super Yacht Mortlock, I like your Informative and very exciting Videos. When will your professional career with this relatively small yacht end? From when you will be the captain of a larger ship? Best from Lausitz/DE Leo
What's the purpose of the large "boxes" above the main engines in the exhaust system? Is it just to cover the exhaust for looks?
The video Capt. Mortlock referenced for the engine rebuilds has the details. IIRC, those are also mufflers... I assume 1600 HP put out lots of exhaust and noise. The chrome plating is for show.
I think the emergency fuel shut offs would be much easier to get to !
Great video ~ you do know your stuff. Caterpillar does make great marine engines the C32 is legendary. What kind of range does the yacht have? And what is the top speed of the yacht?
Why would anyone give this the thumbs down
The interruption is one reason.
Wonderful explanations, thanks! But didn't you forgot to talk a little about the engines in the engine room?
Just wandering, is the freshwater produced clean enough to drink or is it just for showers etc.
It's fully potable and I imagine their filtration system takes out any off tastes.
Actually BETTER than most U.S. drinking water standards ( + NO chlorine nor fluoride) the "filters" bring the "potable water" down to +/- 50 parts per million contaminants ...(basically dipping your hand in a 100 liter bucket of PURE H2O is all the nasty your going to get)
If you fuel capacity is 36k litres, does that mean you’re fitted with extended range tanks? Can most yachts have this option?

Grear vidéo Tristan but steering gear equipements are missing :(

Why does it look like the water sensors for the engine Raycor filters are disconnected?
AWOL's in drydock, on stands for maintenance.
Anyone know how many raffle tickets have been sold to date. I don't FB, so don't have the app installed....? Cheers.
Jason McColl about 1400 so far. I think it needs more publicity on other sites. To speed things up a bit.

Ditch the paddles and get some seakeepers
Does slav need an assistant engineer?
If you had one thing to change in the engine room, what would you do?
Hi Tristan, is the Giffinator still with you? Didn't see her for a while now. …
Tristan gives us an engine room tour in a white sweater...that's a yacht captain. A work boat: no white sweaters allowed...

How do you produce hot water for showers, how hot ? and how much?
A lot of pipe and plumbling...also electrical.....a lot...of work to inspected!....
