Special Effects is really the thing that makes or breaks the movie, directing too.

I agree directing very much affects how a movie turns out but I'd argue digital effects are not as important, if you have bad effects people will still watch more, for example Aquaman had in most people's opinion bad underwater effects and yet the second film is still expected to be huely popular, where as bad directing, cinematogrpahy or audio composition can turn an entire section of the audience away for life.
I think the excecution/acting of the actors also plays a Big Part but I'd guess the 2 Things you named are more important

I love how everyone says the same thing everytime "How do they not laugh". As someone who is obsessed with films and has acted, you do tend to get so immersed into the character and the world you are acting in, that you geniunely begin to see the characters as they WILL be, the scenery as it WILL be. You lose all sense of acting, and you feel like you're IN that world. But also, because you get paid a lot of money not to laugh on every take

as a compositor myself in CGI and 3D lemme just say large teams work on individual shots here frame by frame painting things out compositing thing in and its quite rewarding when you see the end product! these breakdowns really help show the process but yea its more cgi and special effects than you realise

These guys need to watch a video about special effects in Christopher Nolan films. The guy isn't a fan of green screen stuff so he does a lot of it in real places with practical effects. For example for Inception they actually created a spinning hallway that rotates and in Batman TDK, they actually blew up the hospital. Insane stuff!

To answer Harry of why these movies don’t film at the actual set, it’s because a lot of those places don’t even exist. They’re made up cities or places so they literally can’t film on set
