What a wonderful video Troy ! I've heard so many good things about Mama Jean in so many of your videos, and it's an honor to finally "meet" her and learn about your family history. She's a real gem, and I think it's safe to say through your videos, there's a little bit of Mama Jean in thousands of kitchens all over the world. Thanks for sharing this Troy, and cheers and Happy Birthday to Mama Jean !
She is a beautiful woman and has such a beautiful spirit as well... Thank you T-Roy "Troy" and Thank you Very much Mama Jean for your recipe. Happy belated Birthday to you
I hope Mama Jean had a wonderful 93rd Birthday. What a special lady she is. Thank you Mama Jean for showing us young folks how to make a good southern dish. This will be breakfast in my house this morning. Loved hearing her stories at the end I could listen to her stories forever.. You are one lucky guy to be blessed with such a wonderful Grandma. Much love from South Carolina
You just can’t beat an elder family member for stories that will perk your curiosity and curl your toes to hear the way life use to be “back in the day”!! Thanks for sharing your family with us!!
I really loved Mama Jean, she reminds me of my Grandma but we lost her to a stroke when she was 50. It's been 50 years this year that she's been gone but I still miss her and think of her a lot, so many good memories and she was a amazing cook! God bless your Grandma and the best of health to her. I could listen to her for hours, I would love it if you could have her talk about her life and her stories some more. She seems like a amazing person! Thank you for sharing !
Thank you. Love your grandmother, she is an amazing woman. I loved hear her talking when she was welder, working on the planes in WW2, THANK YOU MOMMA Jean. God Bless, I used your reciepe this morning with some good old homemade biscuits. God Bless you so much
Thank you so very much Sherry. We lost Mama Jean just after her 94th birthday a couple of Novembers ago. She was a hoot to be around and always had lots of stories to tell. Much love to you and your family and I'm glad you enjoyed her recipe!!!!
Troy, what a wonderful video and a fine tribute to your grandmother Mama Jean! I hated to see the video end! Mama Jean is as sharp as a tack and what a special privilege to still have her around at 93 and to still be able to hear her sharing her experiences of the past. This video will make a great keepsake for you and the rest of the family for years to come when the ones we love are no longer physically here but remain only in our hearts and minds. The tomato gravy and biscuits remind me of my grandmother Thelma, born and raised in NC, who passed in 1983. I can still see her in the kitchen making homemade biscuits and Tomato or Red-eye gravy, and if I close my eyes and concentrate hard enough, I can smell that special smell of her kitchen. I made a video of her before she passed and am so glad I did:-) I could say more but I don't want my comment to be too lenghtly. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this special moment with us. It was a privilege and an honor to meet Mama Jean. Your style, openness, and willingness to invite us into your personal life as well as your cooking is what makes you so endearing to your supporters. God bless you and yours my friend!
Hey David, I'm sorry to hear about your loss brother. I will definitely cherish this video and I cherish every moment I get to spend with Mama Jean. She's a wealth of knowledge and tells it like it is. I am truly blessed to still have her in my life. Heck, I'm betting she'll make it to 100!!!! I'm happy that we could bring back some fond memories of your grandma Thelma. The older generation sure knew how to cook some fine meals. I think the secret is that they put a lot of love into their cooking and I try to do that as I learned from Mama Jean. Anyone can follow a recipe, but without you putting love into the cook, it just doesn't turn out the same. Much love to you brother!!! I appreciate you watching!
I typically don't leave comments, but I felt compelled to comment on this one. I was fighting back tears because I felt like I was getting to spend another day with my dear departed mother, Cynthia. The older folks in our lives are truly a treasure. Make another video for her big 100th celebration. Thank you for sharing and happy birthday, Mama Jean!
I'm so sorry your lost your mother Cynthia, but I know she's looking down taking care of you and your family. We do miss them here in this world, but they are always with us. Fortunately, my grandmother is still here in this world and of sound mind. Heck, she can even still drive!!! What a hoot!!! I'm so fortunate to have gotten Mama Jean on video cooking and telling stories. I was happy to share her with all of you and I truly appreciate the kind words and thanks for the support. I do hope to make another video with her soon. God bless you and your family Tim!!! Cheers brother!!
Mama Jean drops a "That's what I'm talking about!"... she is priceless. What an awesome video Troy. It's so inspiring that your Mom and Grandma are still in your life.
Mama Jean is so precious. What a women.!! I am watching this almost 2 years later and I am so touched by her view on life. T'Roy how blessed you and your family are to have this beautiful women in your lives and to be there to Celebrate her 93rd birthday. God bless you and your family. Thanks for sharing this heart felt time with your Grandma.😊❤✝️🙏
No words can describe how important family is! If a picture is worth a thousand words then think how many frames(pictures) are in this video and you are starting to edge up on enough words. My grandma is almost 90 and went through the Great Depression, etc, etc, I appreciate this video so much T-Roy, best you have ever made. God and Family is what makes America great!!!
Happy Birthday Dear Mama Jean! Oh TRoy... what a most wonderful and precious video. I sat here watching with tears in my eyes. I just wanted to give your grandma a big hug and listen to her more. To be able to film this.. the two of you cooking together and then to hear her stories... what a very special video TRoy. I love the Tomato Gravy. I have a cast iron skillet that was passed down from my great grandmother, so this brought back memories. Your Mama Jean looks so young... she does not look her age! Loved the stories... especially her hair salon! She gave someone a perm not too long ago? I love it and I love Mama Jean! Thank you for sharing this beautiful video and your dear grandma with us TRoy! God Bless you all!
Thank you very much for the kind words Amy. Mama Jean is still sharp and active. I am truly blessed to still have her in my life. I really enjoy cooking with her and hearing her tell her stories of growing up. And yes, she does still give perms to a select few of her friends. Mama Jean is so much fun to hang around and I have learned a lot about cooking and respecting others from her. I'm glad you enjoyed meeting Mama Jean. Maybe, one day, we can see your precious Mother on camera? I bet she has some great stories also!!! And take care of that iron skillet handed down to you! The newer skillets just aren't the same! God Bless you and your family Amy!!
Troy, I've watched this at least 10 times. I'm 48 and lost my Grammy 6 years ago at age 93, and she was the best cook ever too. I grew up in Washington state, and she lived in Oregon, but was originally from Kinder, LA. My husband and I were stationed at Barksdale, LA, our son is at Ft. Polk, LA and this brings me so much joy. I love you have this on video to cherish forever.
Hi Robin, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I am very blessed to still have Mama Jean in my life to learn from and hear how things were back in the old days. I will definitely cherish this video and Mama Jean. I'll try to get her on some future videos when I see her again. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate that Dan. Mama Jean is a hoot and a a half. I wish I lived closer to her so we could do videos more often. She's a natural on camera!!! Maybe that's where I get it from?
Troy I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this video and I just love Mama Jean! She is looking and doing really good. Hard to believe she is 93 years old. You come from good stock and great genetics brother. This really took me back to my own mother and grandmother. Man I was raised on tomato gravy and biscuits and that is exactly how we do it too. Good ole cast iron skillet is a must for sure. Thanks for posting this Troy. Cheers brother!
I am truly blessed Rus. Mama Jean is still very active and has a great mind. She's a wealth of knowledge and I always love getting to hang out with her. Thanks for watching and cheers to ya brother!
BBQ, Hairstyling and North Carolina are things I got in common with Mama Jean - loved this video as family stories are sacred and its awesome to preserve these stories for future generations.
What a sweet lady I'm so sorry for your lost brother I lost my grandmother a few years back I know they both in heaven cooking up a storm for Jesus christ 🙏🏽
Loved the video. I had a grandmother named Mama Jean. She cooked the old style. Wish she had taken time to show me how to cook like that. My mom a little. But they didn't have the patience. Dad was mechanically inclined but was same way. Envy folks like you Troy.
You are very lucky to still have your grandma brother. Cherish her and take all her secrets man. There are things my grandma made that no one can repeat and is now just a memory. She reminds me of my grandma. Making me tear up. Have a good one Troy.
Yes, I sure am lucky and truly blessed to still have my grandma. I always learn something new when I visit her. She's a wealth of knowledge! Thanks for watching brother! Cheers!
Thank you for watching Logan!!! I will cherish this footage forever! Please tell your family I said hello!!! I also still cherish that video you and your family made of me. All my best!!!
I was so excited to see that you did this video with Mama Jean............I have to be honest that I was skeptical of how a 93 year old would perform in front of the camera but WOW, is she ever a inspiration to all of us. Good for you T-Roy for taking the time to go visit her on her special day. Visit her often and get her to show you all she knows about cooking. Thanks for doing this one, very special indeed.
Mama Jean still has her mind and her body is in great shape for her age. She's a blast to hang out with! So glad you enjoyed the video and I appreciate you watching!
What a sweetheart !! She's really spry and full of wisdom. take all the videos you can. my grandma was cool too. She would be 125 this year....time flys
My grandparents were from Baton Rouge. My last grandmother died last year at Thanksgiving. She was from Mississippi and moved to BR with my grandad after WWII. All four of my grandparents are burried in BR just off Florida Blvd. That I-10 footage, I know all to well living in West LA now days. My wife makes fantastic tomato gravy, in similar fashion. My wife's tomato gravy is one of many great reasons I fell in love with her. Tomato gravy is a staple at our house. I really enjoyed this one Troy!
I'm sorry you no longer have your grandma Lew. I am very blessed to still have mine to learn from and cook with. I always learn something new each time I visit Mama Jean. I appreciate you watching brother!!!
I love Mama Jean. Thank you very much for sharing her with us. Cherish her every time you get a chance while you can. Please share more of her recipes.
I do cherish every moment with Mama Jean. She has handed down a lot of her recipes, but I will try to include more of them on my videos. Thanks for watching Tom!!!
You are absolutely correct. Our world today makes me ill when I think back even to my childhood in the 50's. We need to hit restart and learn what life is supposed to be like. God Bless.
TRoy, I absolutely loved this video. Best one yet. Thank you and your beautiful Grandma for letting me sit with you and listen to her wisdom and wit. My how many memories came flooding in of my own Granny and all the years of her influence. I'm sure you don't need reminded, but, cherish this. It's worth more than all the money in the world.
Thank you very much Scott. I'm so happy that we could bring back fond memories of you hanging out with your Granny. And yes, I will cherish this video and all of the footage I took at Mama Jean's forever. I'm so fortunate that she is still around and in great shape for her age. I can only hope I live to be as old and energetic. I appreciate you watching brother!
That was magic, pure magic. I can just imagine Mama Jean and her sister doing a duo on the local radio, i have visions of "O'brother where art thou" type songs. Really loved that mate, we appreciate heritage down here in Oz and always love to learn from our cousins over in North America. Cheers to ya. Moose
Glad you enjoyed the video brother Moose! I actually do have Mama Jean yodeling, but cut that part out of the video. And I always learn something new each time I get the chance to hang out with Mama Jean. She's a hoot!!!! Thanks for watching and cheers to ya brother!
T-roy, Thank you so much for this video! My dear late mother went to Hardiman Beauty Collage in Woodlawn near Birmingham in the late 60's. Probably the same school as Mama Jean! This video brought back her memories as well as my dear departed grandmother. Tears flowed. Great memories. Bless you!
I bet it is the same beauty school Marty!!! I'm happy we could bring back some fond memories for you. We have to cherish those special moments while we can and I am so thrilled that I have Mama Jean cooking and telling stories on video. I appreciate you watching!
Your grandma looks GREAT! So sharp and 93!!! WOW! A piece of the "Greatest Generation" for sure! Great video brother. Really makes me miss my grandma. Disgusting that someone would thumb this down. Cheers to both of you!
Top notch video, I miss my Grandma she was a great cook just like yours. I'm the first grand kid to and we are the favorites no doubt. I ended up with her number 8 cast iron pan and boy does it cook good. Nothing like an old pan like that. Thanks for sharing the 93 b-day. Keep up the great videos.
This video got me to subscribe! I learned to cook from my mother and grandmother. Seeing this made me cry like a big ole baby. My grandmother taught me to make mater gravy and I lost her a year ago. Family is everything!
Amen brother! Mama Jean was teaching me how to cook when I was able to sit on her kitchen counter. I have fond memories and I'm so glad she agreed to be on camera with me so all of you could meet her. She's a trip! LOL
MamaJean reminds me of my Granny Pat. Her name was Beatrice but we called her Pat. Her tomato gravy and biscuits was to die for. By far my favorite meal.
I'm so fortunate and blessed to have Mama Jean still with us so I could get her on camera. She is a natural on camera. Maybe that's where I get it from?
If anyone gives a thumbs down on this video here is something wrong with them. What a wonderful thing to share with us. A Great Big Thanks to Mama Jean and to you Troy!
What a great lady and great video. My grandfather on mama's side was a Simpson, and moved from Wilson, NC to Mayesville,SC . He was a 50 yr RR man. Amazing wit and sound mind and memory at 93. Hard work, spot welder during the war. Like Janet's late grandmother first thing she asked a man is what do you do. If you didn't work or have a job she didn't think much of you. Ha ! Thanks for the great video Troy. People like Mama Jean is what made America great. Cheers-Phil
Hey Phil, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Mama Jean actually told me the same thing about when she was young she would ask the man wanting to date her what type of work he did. The ladies worked as hard as the men back in the day! Thanks for watching brother! Cheers to ya!
Yep, she is still getting around great and enjoying life. I'm going to cherish her for as long as I can and I'm grateful that I was able to cook with her on camera. I appreciate you watching brother!
93?! Up on her feet, movin', sound mind and has VIGOR! My God my God, this video blessed me T-ROY. I've been mia because of long working hours, but I'm glad I came back just in time to catch this video. I love it! And that's a miiiighty fine gravy! Tell nana I said hey!
Yep, Mama Jean is full of vigor like a spring chicken!!! I hope to live as long as her and have her wits. She's always so much fun to be around!!! I will surely tell her hey for ya brother!!! Thanks for watching!
Troy, love this video. I've travelled that road so many times as I was in Baton Rouge for six years with family in San Antonio and friends in Houston (having lived there for many years). Love your Grandmother, you're so lucky to have her, and she's doing great! Some of the best food in the world comes out of Louisiana and I can only imagine the taste of her gravy, I'm sure it's amazing especially on homemade biscuits! Thanks for the video!
Was really hard to watch this one Troy I was tearing up through most of it so I have to rewatch it again..but let me tell ya...These are the memories you treasure right here..I just wish my 'memere' was alive for me to catch her on video cooking in the kitchen..Mama Jean with her original old Tupperware Salt and pepper shakers and her life experiences and stories...just beautiful. She ain't my 'memere' but I sure do love her as if she were mine. I Love you Mama Jean
I'll share Mama Jean with you my sweet Booger! Maybe you could teach her some stuff about the air fryer? I am truly blessed to have been able to get Mama Jean on video cooking and telling some stories. I actually cut quite a bit of her story telling out to keep the video shorter. She's still very sharp and witty. I'll give her a hug for ya!!!! Love you Booger!!!
My mother in law is from Alabama and she makes Great tomato Gravy. Mama Jean (Sorry if I misspelled) is an absolute treasure, I loved when my Grandparents spoke of how thing were back in the days. I watched every second.
Glad you enjoyed watching Mama Jean, yes you spelled it correctly. I really enjoy hearing those older stories also from the elders in our family. Good info!
My mother was from Alabama an often made a tomato gravy that was red colored an she put it over rice for breakfast for us. Does anyone have an Alabama recipe for tomato gravy. Mom has been gone 25 years an never made a written recipe.
TROY, out of all the video's you've done on BBQ, I think in my opinion that was the best with your Grandma, that I have ever seen.At times I had a hard time watching, because she remind's me of my grand mother a lot, when I was a kid my grand mother cooked all the time , and she all so was a awesome cook also. Troy for her age she looks amazing and what a great mind, she doesn't forget nothing. That probably was one of the saddest thing's I have ever watched, she is a outstanding women, and I feel like I have known her forever. what a super human being. And she doesn't look like she is 93 at all. Troy I don't know what else to say but you have a awesome grand mother, an you did a awesome job on that video. EXCELLENT JOB TROY. GOD BLESS YOU AND KAREN AND YOUR LOVELY GRAND MOTHER.!!!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video Joe. I'm very blessed to still have Mama Jean in my life to learn from. She still has a sharp mind and strong body, so I'm sure she'll be around for quite a while longer. I'll try to get her on future videos next time I visit her. Thank you very much for the kind words and for watching. God Bless you and your family also my friend!
I truly appreciate the kind words and I am very blessed to still have Mama Jean in my life. I'm not sure how many years she has left, but she's still as spry as a spring chicken!!! Thanks for watching and I really appreciate the comment. Much love to you and your family!!!
Thank you very much for watching! Yes, Mama Jean did have a wonderful birthday with most of the family getting together. At her age, she cherishes the family getting together more than presents.
What a wonderful video Troy ! I've heard so many good things about Mama Jean in so many of your videos, and it's an honor to finally "meet" her and learn about your family history. She is a beautiful woman and has such a beautiful spirit as well... Thank you T-Roy "Troy" and Thank you Very much Mama Jean for your recipe. Happy belated Birthday to you
The picture-postcard of a grandmother, how great is that....what a lovely, feisty lady... perfect...
Yeah she is Jay Bird. I keep telling her I'm going to get the US government to make her a historical marker!!! LOL
Mama Jean knows what she is doing. Nothing but love in that recipe.
I hope Mama Jean had a wonderful 93rd Birthday. What a special lady she is. Thank you Mama Jean for showing us young folks how to make a good southern dish. This wonderful lady is sharp as a razor and is going to live another 93 years no problem
Troy, what a wonderful video and a fine tribute to your grandmother Mama Jean!

I love mama Gene. At 93 years old this lady has such cognitive clarity and her 90 plus mobility is putting my 53 to shame.
Love that saying “ when your boots hit the floor in the morning- you are responsible for what they do”. Momma Jean is precious.
Yep, Mama Jean tells it like it is alright! She's been there and done that! LOL
I've lost 3 of my 4 grandparents. I Am Russian so Mam Jean is so different but the same! I wish you all the best!

My wife makes fantastic tomato gravy, in similar fashion. My wife's tomato gravy is one of many great reasons I fell in love with her. Tomato gravy is a staple at our house.

You are absolutely correct. Our world today makes me ill when I think back even to my childhood in the 50's. We

Priceless Brother! My Grandparents are long past, but this brought some good memories back!
Troy, the love, adoration and respect you have for your Mama Jean is very touching and refreshing!! Thank you so much for sharing!~~Zack

I am truly blessed to still have my Grandma around to hang out with and I’m still learning from her. She is a treasure. Thanks for watching Bob!!!
Good info!
T-ROY COOKS I love in tuscumbia and i so loved this video!!! Love your content!!!! I LOVE Mama Jean! You come from a lovely family!!!
All of your great BBQ videos aside, there is nothing greater than showing off your amazing Grandmother! This is your greatest upload!
I truly appreciate the kind words and I am very blessed to still have Mama Jean in my life. I'm not sure how many years she has left, but she's still as spry as a spring chicken!!! Thanks for watching and I really appreciate the comment. Much love to you and your family!!!
Made that run about 1000 times in my life time. What a lovely young lady, you should have her on more often. Great video.
