  • Why you still need to visit Arashiyama bamboo forest when you visit Kyoto! How crowded is it?
Arashiyama & Kyoto - bamboo forest, Pontocho & Kyoto's best kaiseki - Family Road Trip Across Japan, Episode 8
This is episode 8 of our epic road trip around Japan. In this video we visit Arashiyama bamboo forest where there are more people than trees - which would be easy because bamboo isn't a tree it is grass. There was almost as many people as grass though too. 😁 % Arabica have a branch in Arashiyama so our immediate coffee needs were suitably addressed.
Then we caught the Randen light rail back to Kyoto. A we were going into Omiya Station from the Randen line a family stopped us and asked if I was a "famous" UA-camr - because of the camera.😂 It isn't in the video but you can read about it in my blog (link below). After catching the train from Omiya to Kyoto we went for a walk under the stunning canopy of cherry blossoms on the Takase river before we wandered down the famous alleyway - Pontocho.
After more sakura we had our first kaiseki meal of the trip at Guilo Guilo (pronounced Giro Giro). Kaiseki is a wonderful multi-course dinner and Kyoto is one of the best places for eating Kaiseki style.
I hope you enjoy Part 3 of our visit to Kyoto.

Kyoto is definitely one of the most touristed places in Japan for sure. I think we've been there three times and I think this was the busiest but we still love the place. Second time to Arashiyama though. The first time back in about 2010 there was nobody there. Amazing the change.

That was cool. What was the instrument that guy was playing before the forest?? Loved the bamboo forest, so different to see. Those blossoms are just incredible! Loved the old streets too. Thanks for sharing Japan with us 🍻

That was a hand panaphone. I had to look it up. I tried searching kettle drum and steel drum and fluked upon the name. Then I was able to find some music. It has some amazing sounds. His fingers barely seemed to touch and some rich tones would come out. I whinged and moaned about how crowded Kyoto was but it has some truly beautiful sites and the cherry blossoms were just icing on the cake.🌺🌺🌸🌸
      Thanks for watching again!

We did like the bamboo forest. The size of those trees was amazing. We have several types of bamboo in our own garden. The narrow alleys of Kyoto looked interesting too. Your dinner did look interesting. Thanks again for a glimpse of real Japan.

Thanks Ivor! Arashiyama is lovely. The first time we went, pre kids, we visited more of the temples and shrines in the area. Some lovely gardens too. Kyoto is pretty special. Heavily touristed for sure but still a rewarding visit if you've never been there. There is so much to see and do. Because we've been 3 times we didn't visit a few of the other big ticket locations of which there are many. Plus for day trips it is only 30 minutes to Nara, which is also chock full of shrines and temples and deer. 😀 40 minutes in the other direction from Kyoto puts you in Osaka.

That Bamboo Forest looked amazing. But the crowds need to be avoided. Winter sounds like a plan. Love the public transport, followed by the beautiful blossom. Nice way to finish the day with good food. Look forward to the next instalment. 👍🏽🤗🙏🏽 Have a great Sunday.

Most definitely winter is best when it comes to crowds but for sakura season there's no avoiding it. Hopefully the bubble between Japan and Oz will be up next year and we can visit again with fewer crowds. Although we've never been there in the Autumn. Autumn colours are apparently quite spectacular too. Thanks Jojo!

Nice video mate! Kyoto is lovely but wow.... the amount of people is crazy during that season hahaha when I was there I thought that it was with a ton of people but this is next level hehehe That restaurant at the end looks awesome!

    • @ShaneNixonFamily

And it was April. I reckon it possibly gets busier in May / June. Hopefully Japan opens up soon. It would be nice to get back to Kyoto before all the tourists come back. That restaurant was expensive but half the price of a traditional kaiseki style dinner at some of the other places. I think it was one of the more expensive places we went to until we got back Tokyo and went to a sushi restaurant. Next up we're going to cross that big bridge. I have to make it look good without spectacular drone shots like someone else I know... 😂🤣😁

@@ShaneNixonFamily I reckon April is one of the busiest due to the cherry blossoms. I would be lovely to be back indeed. I'm hoping that next April will be open to head there as well 🤞 those restaurants can be expensive but I guess from time to time they are worth it 😅 I'm looking forward to the next video then! I'm sure you will make a great job with it 😎

@@JuanAndYuka I think you're right about Kyoto in cherry blossom season. I'd forgotten how hard it was to book. We booked a couple of months in advance and there was literally only two rooms with enough space for 4. I hope you have another video coming out soon?

Thank you so much for saying that 😀 Japan is an amazing place. We can't wait to go back. We were supposed to have gone in October but had to cancel. We were hoping it might open up again in the New Year but it doesn't seem likely at the moment. I hope you get to go too.
