ASU visiting professor gives a large Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion lecture on the Book of Mormon declaring that, "iniquity is inequity." Positions Nephite Dissenters as the victims, and leans on Critical Theory and Liberation Theology to infuse meaning in the sacred text.
Says Gadianton Robbers are just a group with grievances who are "dispossessed" from their land.
Mormon Studies Scholar learns Critical Theory and tweets, "Nephi is not a good guy."
"This will get much worse." Mormon Studies is "bathed" in Critical Theory.

Greg, I am a future history teacher in training at UVU and I can attest that I'm getting training in Critical Theory in almost every class. It has been difficult, but I'm managing to sift through the language of academia that I'm being baptized in and grasp onto little gems and nuggets of truth. I have no intention of teaching neo-Marxist ideology in my future history classroom and in fact, I intend to counter it with love, facts, and logic. Anyway, great work as always, and thank you for taking the time to inform us of what is happening in our own backyard.

Read The Federalist Papers, any thing by Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. These will help strengthen your mind, and also, help the most, reading The Bible and the Book of Mormon will strengthen your mind the most. And your spirit! Answer the tests the way the teacher wants you to, so that you get your grades, and also your certification. But, be prepared to be a rebel-you are part of freeing our country, by way of educating our youth, in principles of self-control, common sense, and righteousness and freedom. These are things the kids need to learn. I think their parents know these principles, but cannot articulate them or teach them very well, sometimes. You will be helping these parents!

I just read Alma 28:13,14. Alma points out plainly that the "inequality of Man is because of sin and transgression, and the power of the devil..." When we attempt to teach what "WE" think we start to muddy the waters of plain, precious and simple truths.

Inequity activism has to do with institutionalized disadvantaging, which makes Elder Bednar's book One By One very pertinent. The right way you overcome institutional problems is to start focusing on optimal outcomes for each person. The One By One nature of the Lord's relationship to us, the invitations from President Nelson to meet Him in the temple one on one, the Gift of the Holy Ghost, and also the Church's ministering assignments and Come Follow Me personal study directive is evidence that we are operating on a more optimal level than institutions accused of inequity. Take a person where they are at, and help them optimize their upward slope despite their y intercept (The Parable of the Slope - Clark Gilbert gen conf). This can apply to all institutions, and does to ours -- one by one God raises us up.

The verse you quoted just says precisely what this speaker is suggesting. Where there is "inequality", it's because of sin. How much more plain does it need to be.
Now, I guess the nuance is how you define "equality", but if I use the BOM itself and point to 4 Nephi as the model for Zion, then I don't know how we Latter day saints shouldn't be concerned that we are supporting an unequal system. I'm not talking about top-down redistribution (equity).

I'm not pleased with the content, I am offended that this is being taught here and I am intent on speaking up boldly against it, even if it negatively affects my grades. The last sentence states, "...If there is anything virtuous, lovely or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things." What if this is them slowly raising the temperature of the water. Slow enough that most people don’t notice and as fast as they can without getting pushback. What if this is the change that Nelson was talking about? Reminds me of the 11 essays. They wanted to write them because a lot of people were finding out information that turned out to be true. After figuring out, they had not been told the truth about the history. A lot of them were leaving the church. So the church wanted a place where members could go that was a controlled place to learn about what the real history was. Stephen E Snow gives a good talk about inoculating the youth. I was shocked when I started reading history about how unpopular Ezra Benson was among other members of the 12. Interesting times are coming.

That's true. I've witnessed it firsthand in my own life. You can have a very strong background of faith in Jesus Christ, and you can have a plethora of spiritual experiences, but falling away is an inevitability once you begin to consume things that are contrary to the gospel, even if it isn't necessarily on purpose. When you associate one word meaning "injurious actions toward God" and another word that means "injurious actions toward. . . another" it is a sure sign that you are attempting to take GOD out of the equation. when you take God out of the Gospel, you begin to rely on the "precepts of men. . . mingled with scripture." This is how Satan attempts to get a hold of the hearts of the youth, the bright lights that will lead the church into the Mellennium. the attempt is then to get them to question the Holy Ghost promptings and lure us just far enough from the light to be apathetic fence sitters. We know that if we are sitting on the fence, God will spew us out of his mouth.

We are all dead spiritually (all separated from the presence of God), and will all die physically, and only through repentance and the gift of Christ's atonement and resurrection are we redeemed, resurrected, and restored to the presence of God. He knows our hearts though, and that restoration (which we will all experience at the judgement) is a time that also follows the resurrection and the spirit world.
Becoming more alive (less dead) spiritually and connected to Christ in this life, though, is availlable through the gift of the Spirit, and those can be experienced in or out of the church, but the Lord invites us to come closer to him, so that He can draw closer to us. Maybe I speak too much...

We have to be careful how we look up definitions. Online a simple google search of "iniquity" will define it as "un equal" However, the new testament that we have was originally written in Greek. The Greek term for Iniquity is "Anomia" which means "without law or lawlessness." The LDS scriptures would define iniquity as: Sin, Injustice, Evil, Transgression, Trespass & Wickedness.

Ok. This was an amazing video! An underlying concept I kept seeing while listening to you on this: This is a self-sustaining ideology that, once set, will be almost impossible to irradicate. With any concept that removes the responsibility of sin, and changes it into an oppression, ie iniquity versus inequity: a major *hurdle* is raised high up of self responsibility, that to overcome it and get back to a repentant state will require a new higher degree of humility for the individual. This is such a new and intense rebranding of justification that is unreal! As a result without only a change of heart, but also a change in their concept of reality, will either equate to true repentance not taking place if attempted or not at all! This is such a damning view on pure doctrine that will literally starve all Eternal progression of the individual who embraces it! In every way, this teaches the individual to rid themselves of sin not through the atonement of Christ, but because of the sins and oppressions of others, ridding themselves of responsibility of their own choices. And if repentance is attempted in this state, I imagine their thought process will be something like this, "I'm sorry I feel bad that I did it but it wasn't really my fault. It's because of so-and-so" to any who are unaware, this is polar opposite of how correspondence and relationships exist in the Celestial Kingdom, people do not arrive there by pointing fingers at others. A somewhat unknown attribute of an eternal soul in the celestial kingdom, is theyre capable of enduring public scrutiny, and do not shrink by seeking to cover up their sins or seek justification by blaming others.
As you put it, this is sincerely in direct opposition of the true doctrine and of Christ.

We must hold strong in the doctrine of Christ, that He came to die for us who are unprofitable servants, to give us a chance to repent, take the spirit and be reborn a new creature in Christ, that it is spiritual deliverance that brings the new creature out and not some Marxian world view with superfluous virtues that obliterate agency. It was always my impression that the dissenting groups within the Nephites were NEVER led by the oppressed. I'm sure some of their ranks were filled by such people, but they were never in charge. Every major single figure had to have had a gathering or following to gain as much ground as they did (Nehor, Korihor, etc...) and the dissenting groups were almost always started by what passed for the 'Nobility' within Nephite society.
In the City of Ammonihah Alma and Amulek contended with the judges, lawyers, and political leaders. The kingmen that Pahoran and Moroni fought were 'Those of high birth whgo sought to be kings' (Alma 51:8). The Zoramites were angry with Alma and the missionaries because they taught the humble poor and it 'destroyed their craft'. In all three of these instances the leadership sought to overthrow the freedom of the people (Alma 8:17) and take charge as the nobility.
The gospel of Christ (and a free society) holds that all men are equal under the law, but there will NEVER cease to be a group of people who believe that they are 'better' than the layman and deserve to be above the law; to get away with things that the normal man cannot get away with. These men constantly seek the destruction of a free society because it would allow THEM 'greater freedom' to do as they please and treat their fellow men as naught before them. Obviously they cannot do this alone because the 'elite few' tend to be, well... 'few'. But they are masters at the craft of convincing a general populace- especially those who feel displaced- to go along with their plans with promises of 'equity' and 'social justice'. Of course, they never intend to keep these promises. They never do.
This is why Alma and Amulek STARTED with the teachings of judgment and condemnation. The wicked noble man believes that he should be allowed to get away with whatever he desires, regardless as to the reactions or consequences it may have towards those of 'lesser birth'. The righteous man understands that in ALL things that he does, he will be held accountable towards his actions by a higher being who cannot be bribed, manipulated, deceived, mislead, or bought. He will thus temper his actions accordingly. There are no small number of people who find this concept abhorrent.
There is so much parallel with what's going on in Western society (and others) today that it's disheartening.

The Nephites never at any time took anything from the Lamanites, they never ruled over them or oppressed them. The Lamanites were a free people who ruled themselves and possessed the original land of their inheritance. Their hatred of the Nephites was based upon lies promoted by the adversary. It's important to also point out that much of this is based on poor or outright false research. What Pagan claims is demonstrably untrue. He claims "iniquity" appears about 111 times (by his count), "far more than" abomination or wickedness. In fact, wickedness appears more frequently at a count of 160.
    Here are the actual statistics:
    iniquity: 135
    abomination: 11
    wickedness: 160
Now of course, there are other forms, such as "iniquities." Fair enough; let's expand to all forms:
    iniquity: 135
    iniquities: 91
    iniquitous: 1
    -------------------------
    227
    wicked: 103
    wickedly: 7
    wickedness: 160
    -------------------------
    270
    sin: 65
    sins: 162
    sinful: 3
    -------------------------
    230
    abomination: 11
    abominations: 76
    abominable: 28
    -------------------------
    115
other similar (adultery, lasciviousness, etc.): 55
Combining abomination with it similar words, we have the following ranking, in order of decreasing frequency:
    Wickedness: 270
    Sin: 230
    Iniquity: 227
    Abomination + similar: 170

Thanks Greg! This reminds me of 3Nephi 6 of how the church is being broken up within itself because of various ideologies and people turning away from Christ.
    Then comes 3Nephi 7:2-7
2 And the people were divided one against another; and they did separate one from another into tribes, every man according to his family and his kindred and friends; and thus they did destroy the government of the land.
3 And every tribe did appoint a chief or a leader over them; and thus they became tribes and leaders of tribes.
4 Now behold, there was no man among them save he had much family and many kindreds and friends; therefore their tribes became exceedingly great.
5 and all this iniquity had come upon the people because they did yield themselves unto the power of Satan.
6 And the regulations of the government were destroyed, because of the secret combination of the friends and kindreds of those who murdered the prophets.
7 And they did cause a great contention in the land, insomuch that the more righteous part of the people had nearly all become wicked; yea, there were but few righteous men among them.
The power of Satan is deception.

Thanks, Greg. I was considering BYU as an option for my college-aged kids, but...... with what I'm seeing these days - I've reconsidered. I graduated from the University of Utah but knew going in that it was an extremely liberal school, so with my eyes wide open, I enrolled. That was in the early 90's. I fought against the liberal slant at every angle. I made it out with my testimony intact and possibly even stronger. Now.....from what I've seen in the past 10 years, I'm more confident that my kids' guard would be down when attending church school and would be easily manipulated by the clever sophists of the day like this Pagan from ASU in your podcast. I am preparing my kids AT HOME, before university, with the knowledge that they will encounter the barbs of the adversary, such as CRT and the Liberal mindset. Also, this way of thinking is counter to God's Plan of Salvation and teaches "victimology" and self-deprecating thought processes. It doesn't take but 3 brain cells to know that God never intended for us to cower to oppressive thought or lifestyle ideologies. ----- Keep up the good fight. Stay strong and keep vigilant.

Yesterday in my personal studies I was confronting the blood thirsty nature of the Amalekites and the zoramites and eventually the disobedient Nephites and thinking how closely related to the polarization of the two sides in the Middle East.
How those who torture and rape, maim and murder are being painted with a white brush and on this canvas become the oppressed! Unimaginable! The Book of Mormon makes it very clear that any people can fall into transgression and become a depraved lot of disaffected believers who choose pride and sin over charity and obedience to our fathers commandments!
Also very obvious and Moroni makes this very clear that Ammoron knows that he is wrong and yet chooses to hold fast to his belief system! (Alma 55:1)
“ …because he knew that Ammoron had a perfect knowledge of his fraud; yea he knew that Ammoron knew that it was not a just cause that had caused him to wage a war
    against the people of Nephi.”
Why does he pursue this then ? Because he wants to oppress the nephites for power and remove their freedom of religion so he can rule over them and place them in bondage which is the ultimate end of all those who choose this philosophy!
Why is this so hard to see ?
“…blinded by the craftiness of men!” We are here again! Please stay well and keep speaking out against this pernicious evil Greg!

As a whole, I am generally with you on being against indoctrination towards DEI and CRT. I already said this on Jacob Hansen's video where he interviewed two students who attended this presentation, but I'd like to say it here as well: the best thing to do here is for each person to learn by the Spirit to discern between truth and error. I wholeheartedly reject any attempt to use government to force equity in the way things are currently trending politically, but I also wholeheartedly disagree with those who try to say the whole emphasis should be on preaching Christ to the exclusion of helping the poor and needy. Yes, Love God is the 1st Commandment and Love thy Neighbor comes 2nd, but it's still a commandment to be followed, otherwise we become no better than the Pharisees who focused solely on their own exact obedience to the neglect of the people around them, causing Christ to say "These things ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone." I'm not trying to say you of yourself don't care about the needs of the poor, just that sometimes you come off so strongly against the political agenda I fear people may start to think that way. As you said, disparity cannot exist without charity, that to me is the most important part of the message here (coming, of course, second to the recognition of Christ as our savior from sin). If anyone feels otherwise I'd be happy to engage in a conversation, but I would suggest first reading Jacob 2:12-21, Mosiah 4:16-23, and Moses 7:18.
As a side, I do want to clarify a point, since you mentioned his name here. I work with Fernando Gomez personally (the man who this yearly presentation is in honor of), and I was invited to attend with him as well as to sit at lunch with Professor Pagan and a handful of others. I can tell you that Mr. Gomez was not particularly enthused by the message BYU chose to have shared. His whole focus has been on making the modern history of the Church in other countries more widely accessible, particularly Mexico as that is where he is from. It has nothing to do with any political agenda or an attempt to twist scripture to benefit one particular group of people over another. He simply wants people to know that Church History didn't end once the saints moved to Utah and there are interesting, spiritual events and faith-promoting stories that can be learned about throughout the world. So if you disagree with the message Professor Pagan shared and are upset with BYU for allowing it, know that Mr. Gomez was not involved in the decisions made, and myself knowing his political stance feel quite safe in saying he would have asked for a different topic given the chance.

Mahalo, for sharing this knowledge about CRT because we are in serious trouble‼️
We need a new way of fighting this evil. Christians who are living a Christlike path are going to be the minority.
CRT influencers are world-wide but, when it’s being taught within the walls of our Universities (LDS) , the future will take on a new direction [if] we don’t SMACK it out of our communication.s.
Similarly, a smoker who is attempting to quit a bad habit needs two things to fight the temptation to smoke.
    1) Sound mentors that will provide encouraging communications to help you stay on the path of an addiction free environment.
    2) A new perspective of what the world looks, feels, sounds and tastes like without being constantly controlled by a bad habit.
Just a few thoughts of my observations when my mom made the decision to quit smoking a return back to church when I was a teenager.
She was my hero because she made the choice to quit and she Did It‼️ It wasn’t easy for her to quit Cold Turkey, but she knew it would be worth it.
SMACK CRT OUT of our edification so we can focus on the GoodNews of Christianity.

The gospel has nothing to do with equality as we use the word today . Its all built on a hierarchy which is what the Book of Mosiah outlines where in one part it sounds like equality might be synonymous with evil socialism/communism and a collapse of all hierarchies BUT then later in Mosiah it clarifies what equality looks like....equal opportunity/treatment and not equal outcomes as Elder Oaks has also pointed out . The whole order of the Celestial kingdom (perfect order vs worldly chaos) is rooted in Hierachies which is exactly why the adversary is crushing all hierarchies with Socialism, and the greatest allyship to destroy the nuclear family and its roles with BLM, LGBTQ and Feminism (too often ignored but was all their mission statements)
Avraham Gileadi also spends most of his exegesis on the Book of Isaiah , showing that there is a hierarchy / ladder of Israel vs Servant vs Seraph. None of those outcomes are based on equality except that each rung on the ladder is trying to help those on the lower rungs to come up / ascend of their own free will.
And it's interesting how these frauds draw the line on colonialism at a convenient point in time to make their argument to fuel a victim class while ignoring the whole picture. As you said...theres always going to be disparity
Just wait for the Book of Mormon being attacked as racist. Its coming to a SS class near you soon

@@sandrahurst4123 Yes. Even Christ talked about how God the father is greater than him.
Thats a divine status in heaven. Status is a hierarchy and that’s why Joseph Smith spoke about one eternal round. We are constantly progressing. Even perfected beings are on different hierarchies, but advancing. Even in the perfect counsel of gods, there is different status, or hierarchies as far as glory.

I've felt for a long time, as you articulated here, that when the Lord comes a second time like a thief in the night he will not be recognized by many for the same reasons that the Jews didn't recognize him the first time around--they could only see the world through political/physical eyes and not spiritual eyes. The same political and spiritual warfare that prefaced the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC and its second destruction 70 AD is permeating throughout our society now. Namely, the rejection of that our nature is sinful an that what we need is a spiritual messiah--Jesus Christ.

Correct me if I am wrong, Greg, but to me, critical theory main objective is to completely erase personal responsibility and personal accountability from the equation and put the blame on someone or something else. My study of the Book of mormon has taught me that one of its main messages is that of personal responsibility. Ex: " but this much I can tell you, that if ye do not watch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds, and observe the commandments of god, and continue in the faith until the end of your lives...ye must perish. And now, O man, remember, and perish not." Mosiah 4:30
Personal responsibility is taught throughout the book of mormon. We are personally responsible for our actions and will be held accountable. Critical theory despises personal responsibility and accountability. The Book of mormon teaches over and over we will be ACCOUNTABLE!!!
Those two concepts are being attacked in the world and now within the church. Instead of looking inward, they teach us to look outward and point the blame.

I can easily see if this was taught in gospel doctrine it would be well received because we like looking at things in a “new” way. I’ve seen this happen many times. I believe most of these are done with good intentions but feel they look beyond the mark of the intent of the writer.

I think most have the same intentions as those in the BofMthat want to be popular and have money given to them. We live in a time, more than any other time in the history of the world, where everyone's voice can be heard and ppl can feel like gods from their followers. Ppl also want to be liked, (not respected), they want to feel smart and wise. That is what social media followers or FANS will make someone feel like. A god. This is all about pride.

What would happen if every one listening to this channel inundated, BYU, Deseret Book, or CES with not only phone calls but also letters expressing our concerns and calls for accountability and change?

You’re exactly right. But it is not in the nature of conservative people to advocate for change. It IS in the nature of Leftists to do so, however, which is why the Right and correct side will continue to lose ground and influence in the world while the Left gains in strides.

My oldest has encountered it little by little in seminary. It's little things, like mentioning the Family Proclamation and then giving the students the bulk of the time to speak out against (and how it's mean/hurtful/wrong) because of abortion and gender and so on. It didn't happen all the time, but it was definitely an issue. We're debating sending our other children in person. 😏

Since the early 2000s, I have been using a list when assessing "fascism". When I run into people who throw around fascism to blanket describe certain bevahiours, I share. Suddenly, I am told that "You do not understand historical fascism." However, when I ask how the modern groups connect to historical fascism (1930s-1940s), they can only say, "it feels like it". Yet, when I show how both historical groups and modern groups connect to my list, they respond, "I can't even talk to someone like you." The list is simple, and you can see how it connects to the Book of Mormon and the video.
1} You adhere to a certain philosophy and believe it in it completely. You hold it to you core and may change small pieces, but not the majority.
2} You justify your beliefs through the community you have built of people that adhere to the same philosophy. You say that it can not be wrong if so many people believe it.
3} You require that others /must/ follow your beliefs and want it enforced.
4} You believe so much in your beliefs, that you feel that you will do anything for your beliefs, anything.
1 is a moral human, although different people can assign a different morality level, it is still a type of moral human.
2&4 are common in nationalists and religious communities. 3 is often seen with activists. In combination, these can be a good thing. Community leaders, political activists, etc. Law Enforcement usually show 2&3.
The problem is when all four come together. /This/ is Fascism. This is wrong in all forms. People now justify their beliefs not out of facts, but "feelings" (1&2). People now justify harming others for their beliefs, not defensively, but pro-actively. (3&4). This is what was happening. Inequality was and/or is an excuse. Instead, I guarantee that the aggressors were exposed to discussions much like Critical Race Theory. The name has changed, but the structure and goal have not. It radicalizes people into malleable Fascists who are then used by the elite. Same here, same in the BoM. It is a sad part of a late stage of the Pride Cycle. Worse yet, once people learn to "justify" historical bad behaviour, they start using the same justifications on current affairs. This leads them to justify a lot of very bad things and are then shocked when it happens to them.

    • @rawbfish9355
      @rawbfish9355 9 місяців тому

The inventor of Fascism was Giovanni Gentile with help from Mussolini. He said that Fascism is a form of socialism in fact it is its most viable form.

    • @kevinmorbidthelostcronin1984
      @kevinmorbidthelostcronin1984 9 місяців тому

@@rawbfish9355 And we have a winner. If you try to delineate Fascism by the textbook definition, then you end up with "Historical Fascism". The problem is, by the definition outlined through Gentile and Mussolini, nothing that has been accused of Fascism (right, left, crazy) in the last several decades counts. Nor does any of what occurred during that historical time actually match with the academic outline. Academics have to stretch it to fit. The reason is that fascism is a mindset. A mindset that is usually found in socialistic circles (#2 with #3 creeping in). The revolution and early years of the USSR were fascist, but then mostly just tyrannical authoritarian.
Not trying to use this for authority, but as a warning, I spent over 20 years working in academia, mostly at the collegiate level. I was raised by a professional historian who wanted a historian son (he settled for someone who at least read his recommendations) and a collegiate PoliSci teacher. Even they had to admit that this described the behaviour more than the academic wording. Mussolini did not invent fascism, he just branded a version.

A good counterpoint to this guys critical theory view of the Book Of Mormon is that the BOM is warning of the dangers of focusing on how you have been wronged. No matter how wrong or injust you have been treated, no matter how justified you feel in your anger; you have to find within yourself to forgive and move on or be damned and bitter.
Indignation is all consuming and can never be quenched.
This is an aspect of the BOM being written for our day that I had not realized how on the nose it really was until I watched this video.
