I'll share my thoughts right here: I had never seen or even heard of him before, but he's an excellent interviewer, which is rare! Flows through the questions naturally and lets the interview subject guide the interview rather than the other way around. Very, very skillful! And of course Buster seems like such a cool guy. Very impressed with both men.
Anyone can knockout someone who is drugged! The fact that it took Buster all those rounds to knock out Mike is a testament to how strong Mike is, not how good a fighter Buster is.

My exact thoughts man, a true man can show emotion but not let it control him.
Mike Tyson was in there with a guy who had the natural talent, trained his ass and had nothing to lose. And he thought this was gonna be an easy fight. No wonder he got the complete ass whooping he got.

That night was the "Perfect Storm" for Douglass. Douglass, who was in the perfect fighting "Kilter" that evening, which I don't know whether or not he'd ever been there prior or not, but he never appeared to be again. No matter what Tyson won back after that, he's Never came back to even close to pre Douglass fighting "Kilter" since.

What a great interviewer. The best journalism isn't on network TV....this guy is as good as it gets !! I love how informed Pat is, there are no stupid questions. Man, this guy puts the lost art form of journalism back on the map. It is refreshing to see a journalist tell a story on the content of the story and get the absolute best out of the story by doing his homework and doing the work. Pat has mastered his craft. It's so nice to see the real story being told when an interviewer asks the right questions....too often you see the interviewer trying to tell the story by only asking questions they the feel the way the story should be told. Subtract all the producers and network agendas and journalism is dead on network TV.....This is the future of journalism !!

Relax guy, Buster wasn't even that good when he best Tyson. People who understand boxing and Tyson's career know that Tyson beat himself that night. He showed up not interested, unmotivated, and barely even threw punches.
I remember where I was at 13 years old, sitting on my living room floor with my father when Douglas beat Tyson. Tyson was my absolute favorite athlete and I was crushed at 13. Hats off to Buster, great fight...shocked the world almost as much as he shocked me

I absolutely loved this interview. I remember watching that fight. I was the only one openly cheering for him to win. Even after he won and I took an ass whoopin from a room full of my brothers and friends I still was the happiest kid there could be. Buster was,,,,,IS an inspiration and was to me when I was growing up. Especially after he won he taught me that ANYTHING is possible when you put your mind, body, and soul towards training. Thank you Mr Douglas. Losing my ma three years ago he had me in tears when he spoke of his loss.

The reason why I called u out on the interview part because I don't know if you noticed , but Tyson has been silent on this issue. This loss had a tremendous effect on him. He hardly talks about it.
The truth is, he trained for this fight like he did with his other fights. He underestimated Douglas. Buster kept coming to him and brought Tyson to deep waters, an environment he wasn't used to.

I have always liked Buster Douglas. This interview had made me like him so much more. And Valuetainment, you bring top-level content!
I grew up in Columbus-moved here from Oakland,Ca in 1966. I was always a Tyson fan until I heard Buster was fighting him. I had to go to a local pub to watch the fight as it was “blacked-out” on all the local networks, and when he laid that 3 punch combination on Mike I knew we had just witnessed history. I worked at the university so on the day they had Buster “dot the I” on the band’s famous “script Ohio,” I was at the game and it took me 3 try’s to bust through security on the sidelines, and run up and shake Buster’s hand. (I’m not a fighter but I was a United States Marine and wasn’t going to give up easily) and then, probably 20 years later, I saw Buster again and told him “I was the guy who had security all over me while I was shaking your hand before the game in 1990 (or 91-it was a while ago) and he remembered me. Signed an autograph that said “Peace and Love” (to me) Buster. I treasure that little piece of paper to this day. My son will get it when I shake free of this dimension and he knows this history and glory James Buster brought to this “cowtown.” He’s a fantastic person-still helping disadvantaged youth in our city-and he’s a great MAN. I’ve met Ali too and grew up watching him with my dad when I was a kid in the late 60s and 70s. Ali was great too but Buster will always be “The greatest” in my eyes, just for who he is and what he’s done, and continues to do. God Bless you Buster. If you ever need a platoon of Marines for anything-I will make sure we’re there for you. 👊🏽👍❤️✌️

This fight was the most important event i ever had with sports in my life having a deep effect on the way i saw things from there on out. I love this guy. I'm so happy to hear this from James. Its been a huge missing piece to this story overall in the media in terms of frequency.
James was a great boxer. People talk about him so negatively...it makes zero sense. You don't get a chance at the title if you can't throw. Most people would get absolutely destroyed by a featherweight that comment negatively about James. Nevermind a ranked heavyweight.
I respect Buster, but you got to tell Tysons side to get a real perspective on the overall fight. Lets be honest, Tyson had no interest in fighting that fight, he took it lightly and had a lot of problems outside the ring. But i respect the focus and the fact Buster was a decent fighter.
...and the lesson is...when you take another pro heavyweight lightly because you think you're the most dominant fighter in the world...expect a proper and systematic ass whoopin'. James respected the art, the history and the work for that fight and Tyson didn't. There's zero shortcuts in the pro's and Tyson learned that the hard way in Tokyo. You never surround yourself with "yes"men. They make you soft.

He didnt respect the art in his previous title shots, nor did he respect the art 6 months later against Holyfield when he came in like a fat bum and not a Champion. He was 23 years of age, his mum was dead, Cus D'amato was dead, his marriage was over, he was king of the world, however, can you imagine being 23 years old, a multi millionaire, global super star? Buster lost horrorbly to holyfield, he looked nothing like the Buster of Tokyo, and if you watch that fight he gave up. I didn't "try to portray" anything. I told the truth. Apparently you missed the whole part where Don King completely railroaded Douglas. You've got a whole different narrative going on in your head. I didn't say anything at all about Tyson the first time. Not one word. That was you. Then I told you why Tyson lost that fight. Nothing more, nothing less. Douglas mom died suddenly right before that fight. Immediately before that fight. You're arguing with ghosts, man. Douglas won. Tyson lost. The End. Forever.

I watched this fight live with a friend on HBO. Buster had a look in his eyes that was different than Tyson's previous opponents, whom always looked scared or beaten before the first bell had even rung. I said out loud, this guy came to fight! Then I predicted early in the fight that I thought Buster would catch Tyson. My friend said, No f'ing way. Well, we know how the rest went. Greatest fight I've ever seen to this day and I've watched maybe a thousand of them. I still get the HOLY SHIT!! goose bumps, just thinking about it!!
Tyson wasn't prepared at all for that fight.

I was one of the believers! I watched the fight alone at my Aunt's house so I could tune out the distractions and what I knew would happen, happened. I'm from Columbus and my father was friends with Buster's Dad. My dad was very respected and revered and he admired Buster's Dad. We met him at Beatty Recreation Center when we were kids and I can still remember the smell of the gym and how the big brown leather training gloves dwarfed my hands. Buster must've been around somewhere, but I only knew about his Dad "Dynamite" at the time because of he and my Dad's relationship. More than anything, i always admired Buster's intellect and reverence for his parents. The way he describes his parents and their relationship reminds me of how much I revere my Mom and Dad and how my Dad reared me and my brothers. Last week, my son started training with Buster Douglas and believe it or not, I see Buster every day. His body moves a little bit slower, but his mind is still all there - as witnessed in this video. I think he's one of the most fascinating people in the world - ever and I'm honored to have him share his legacy with my family through his work with my son. I don't have many heroes, but he's one of mine.

James, I am hoping you will read this. I watched that fight live on TV and made a record on VHS. I still have the tape. your performance on that day is my favorite heavyweight fight, the greatest performance ever in a heavyweight fight. it is unmatched. also from a spiritual point of view, it is a masterpiece! it is the greatest heavyweight fight ever. I think you did perfectly in Tokyo on that night. you have been prepared for Tyson perfectly, countered all the things that made him effective. you didn't wait and reacted, instead you have been the one who hit first. double jabbed. you didn't stop after you hit him, you kept on punching and then fixed him. you have been a split second faster than Tyson in every action. your mindset and spiritual strength on that night made the impossible happen. you did it for your mom. Everyone was scared of Mike Tyson, but I didn't see any fear on your side. not a glimpse of fear. I am convinced, *you would have beaten Mike Tyson on any day in his career* with that performance. you won because you were better than Tyson has ever been. you won because you fought a perfect fight. that lucky uppercut from Tyson was part of it. you took it as a reminder of who is standing on the other side, who ate countless punches from you, and it told you, to finish him now. therefore you did it 1 round later. You created a miracle. due to incredible spiritual strength and perfect physical control.

As was the premise of "Rocky" , if "good" works really hard, it can hang with greatness. Especially if greatness is off. And that was the case here. But beyond that, props to Douglas because he really did fight Tyson perfectly. He broke the code. After that, it was easy for others top follow suit.

This fight inspired me. Saw it live on tv at 16. 3 years later I had my first golden gloves match.
I'm gonna love this! At the time I became at instant a Douglas fan! It's a pity that his career turned out to have just one really exceptional fight. But that was an all time great beauty! Thirty years later people still speak about it!

The Champ! I had the pleasure of serving the Champ lunch on a regular basis over an 8 yr period (2004-2012). At first The Champ was vastly overweight and eating meatball subs and drinking diet coke. By the end of my days at the restaurant The Champ had slimmed down eating healthy and drinking water. The Champ was always with Jon Johnson and they were always gentlemen and treated the staff and guest excellent. Johnson's son is a lawyer and was a regualr at the restaurant . Jon Jr told the owner that he, The Champ, Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley (Ralphie from A Christmas Story) had been dicussing a Buster Douglas movie and had shot test test footage. I kind of regret never asking for a photo or autograph from the crew but they knew they could eat in peace and not be bothered. Buster boxed at a nightclub called Screamin Willie's in the early 80's.
The Champ was and is very Humble and he has always given back to the community and city of Columbus.

I remember the look Douglas had when he entered the ring at that fight and I knew he could win. What a fight.

Yep Tyson had no idea what was waiting for him . I dont think anyone did . Thats what happens when you take everything for granted .
Before the fight nobody gave Buster a chance to win. After the fight everyone saw he had "the eye of the tiger' when he entered the ring. GTFOH.
@@ORIGINOLINDIVIDUAL well some boxing experts actually forsaw it. There were many thing missing in mikes corner. 1. Kevin rooney. 2. A crew who actually comes with tools and equipement to the fight.
@@waillm416 I don't even think Mike trained properly for this fight,..he was talking about not training for most of his fights because he thought he was just unbeatable and the best and didn't need training, basically at gods level. But obviously, that is easily going to destroy his chances of winning, even though he still some hell managed to destroy all his opponents...
The one thing I do know is that on February 11th, 1990...Buster Douglas delivered an a**whoopin. It was awesome. I love Buster.
I love underdogs. The Buster Douglas story is special. A great story, a great man. Someone needs to make a movie.

infact the luck of Douglas was that Tyson spent the night before that fight, with alcohol, women and no sleep. And Douglas was full of rage about his mom's lost.

I was 16 when this fight happened. I was a boxing fan, and had grown up watching Mike Tyson obliterate everything in his path. I didn't know Douglas at all, but I watched this fight on TV anyway, because I watched all of Tyson's fights that I could. I (and everyone I knew) gave Douglas no chance. It was as close to a sure thing I've ever seen. Then the fight started.
Douglas made it out of Round 1 which was the usually the end of the line for many of Tyson's outmatched opponents. Then a few more, and a growing sense of 'wtf is happening? What's wrong with Mike?' Douglas was holding his own, which, in itself, was more than anyone expected. Then Douglas got stronger and Tyson faded, and I thought, 'I think Douglas is actually winning this thing!' Then, the world order was restored when Tyson finally connected with one of his lethal uppercuts and Douglas went down. I was impressed when Douglas got up, but figured that it was only a matter of time before Tyson took him out.
But, a funny thing happened. Against all odds, Douglas did more then just win the next rounds, he was beating the crap out of Tyson. It was like watching Superman get beat up. Finally Tyson fell and was counted out. I wanted so badly to dislike Buster Douglas for destroying a superhero, but, as the world got to know him, it was impossible to hate him. My hate turned to respect for the feat Douglas had achieved. After watching this, it's clear that Douglas is still one of the 'good guys.'
