We do. I was dead against 'having' to opt for an SUV or crossover type vehicle (personal hatred 😆) so was pleased to see the MG4 was a similar size to a Golf - perhaps marginally taller, but not drastically so.
@@OfficialMacMotors I moved from a Golf to an MG4 (SE) and it's very similar. It takes up the same space in my garage, and it has slightly more length in the back for my bike.
I've not driven an iD3, so cannot comment, but I struggle to see how anyone who's already got a small EV wouldn't like the MG4. It does everything you could possibly want, and then some! For a lot less money than its rivals too.
I've had my Trophy long range since November. I really like it. It does take a while to understand the software and how it "thinks". Really smooth drive and loads of power when needed. The 0-60 is around 7.5 seconds but it feels much faster than that off the lights. With Octopus (7.5p/kwh at night) I can put 100 miles of range into it for around 2 quid ! The best range I have seen so far in this cold weather is 215 miles. As soon as I put the heating on about 10 miles of range vanish (and return if switched off again) Tip: Do a bit of research on your Ohme home pro charger settings before you get it. There are a few videos on here that help.
It's a great car and I feel I'm really going to enjoy running it. The performance is really brisk. On paper it's the same speed as my old Octavia vRS TFSI, but this feels much quicker due to the instant torque. Maybe not as quick as the Mk2 Golf, but that's just daft. 😆 Thanks for the advice on the Ohme Pro Home charger. I'm waiting on a cheap tariff now, but it's taking a while, so charging is costing a fair bit right now... although still cheaper than diesel!
Nice to see a balanced review from a petrol head. I have the original MG5 which is basic compared to your car but it is a fantastic car to drive and I have had no issues in 3 years of ownership. I drove all types of ICE cars in 40+ years of driving but nothing compares to the smoothness of drive of the electric cars. The only downside for me is the fact that you have to plan for long journeys and when/where to charge, this is getting easier with the rapid expansion of the charging network. I hope you enjoy your MG4 as much as I enjoy my MG5. Keep us updated.
Thank you! I'm trying to be unbiased and have entered this stage of vehicle running with a completely open mind (unlike some of the knuckle draggers that have made comment during my time with the car!) I've yet to do a really long journey and I'm sure that'll be an experience, but the charging network seems good now, from what I've heard, so I'm not particularly worried. Plus, with the range I'd ordinarily be stopping midway through anyway for a toilet break and coffee - at which point I'll stick it on charge whilst doing so. Not really an inconvenience.
I’ve ordered a Skoda Enyaq 85x Sportline plus. I’ll pick it up around May time. I tested one and it’s a different driving experience to ice cars. I can’t wait til I get it. I did look at the MG HS, but in the end went for the Skoda. I hope you’re happy with it. I’m going to watch your good /bad video now. I’ll pop back and follow you. Good luck.
@@OfficialMacMotors generally for long distance I use eco mode, one pedal driving, have the cruise control at 70, but m25 is normally between 40/60 anyway due to traffic. And I use climate control and heated seats/steeringwheel when needed. Great to see you’re enjoying the experience of driving an EV and yes, it’s very different from an ICE but in good way. I took a test drive in a VW ID.3 and couldn’t stop smiling so I ended up buying one 2 weeks later, that was in July 2021. My wife was scared to drive it but finally got the courage and she absolutely loved it, so much so she asked me to get her one too! I would have bought the MG4 as it’s a cracking car to drive and probably the best value 300 mile + EV on the market but I got a massive discount on an ID.3 Tour back in October. Have had a SE LR with ohme and intelligent octopus for 9 months. In the summer, easily get 270 miles on a charge (under £5), in winter around 200. Really enjoying the car, no dealer contact needed, just a couple of small issues that I'll get resolved at the annual service.
Thanks very much. Really glad you enjoyed it. I have a bit of practice thanks to another channel I produce content for our Mk2 Golfs, but in quite a different style, so this vlogging thing is new to me!
Think if you have the regen set to Auto mode then it uses the radar, if it sees nothing ahead when you lift off it will essentially coast, if a cars in front it should regen.
Yeah I think so, I don't have an MG4 but remember seeing it on a review. Think you can map the regen mode button to the steering wheel button too, but probably adaptive is the way to go@@OfficialMacMotors

I have had my Trophy long range since September and i am still very happy with the car the economy of running this car is really good i have Octopus Intelligent Go with the Ohme pro charger i do about 200 miles a week as well as a 180 mile round trip once every fortnight the total cost each week is about £3.50 per week with an additional £3 for the fortnightly long trip. I used to spend £50 to £60 per week in petrol and the extra trip used to cost another £30. Like others have said, i would definitely not go back to an ICE car by choice. The car has a few small niggles with the software but they are only minor issues. I like the quiet smooth drive and the lack of smelly dirty fuel etc. also i am impressed by the instant power delivery especially when a boy racer sits next to you at traffic lights revving trying to show off. i love leaving them standing lol.
That's good to know an owner for a few months is still enjoying their ownership. I'm guessing the 180 mile round trip it can manage without a charge too? Even in these colder months? I look forward to being able to switch to Intelligent Octopus, as right now it's not as cheap to charge as it could be. And as for the performance, I was overtaken by a Merc A250D, with a bumper sticker "You've just been overtaken by a girl." I couldn't have that, so left her for dust. 😆
Aliexpress has so many accessories for the Mulan. 1st thing I purchased was a Android Auto wireless dongle, once set up gives me just enough time to turn on opd or off lka before it starts AA, and off I go. Here in NZ just got a software update that has a shortcut to turn off LKA.

It's dreadful how 'clean' it turned up! A couple of little scuffs on the front bumper too, thankfully notcied on delivery, which is frustrating, so I've let them know that they'll require repairing. Interesting about the granny charger as I'll be visiting my parents 150 miles away next weekend, so this is going to be a test for it and charging from their electricity (I've already sought permission 😆)
@OfficialMacMotors I wasn't impressed and it was an over cast morning so I've been noticing other things but I let Octopus know so they can sort it out! I've noticed the cold weather hammers the battery but if you heat the battery before you use it while it's charging as it takes 7kws to heat! I've been watching hundreds of UA-cam videos for tips 🤣
@mrb8438 that's a real shame. I had the guy who delivered it with me for about 20 minutes whilst I went round the car and ensured we both took photos of the affected areas! Fortunately they all seem to be located on the front bumper, so just one area to repaint. But... it's a brand new car and that shouldn't happen.
@valleysofneptune yep, pretty dreadful. I can tell you I took great pleasure in giving it a valet at my earliest opportunity! But the condition it was delivered in was really quite inexcusable.

Nice one, Dude! I'm sure you'll enjoy your new car a lot. It'll make you realise how noisy, smelly, vibrationy (?!) and laggy ICE cars are. And just how horrible going to the petrol station is. Best of luck!
Thank you. Yeah it was quite surprising jumping straight from the MG into my Skoda how antiquated the ICE tech feels, and I love engines and mechanics!
Hi, congrat's on your MG, I have the 64 Essence NZ and when you go over a speed bump or pothole the front suspension is smooth an make no noise but the rear make a thud bass kind of noise like if the car is bottoming out on the chassis, wondering if yours does this too if you go over a bump, there does seem to be a different in feel, otherwise the car goes fantastic
I've not noticed an clunking or banging from the suspension, even when inadvertently hitting a monster pothole. And as it's so quiet being an EV I'd expect to pick up on anything like that.
Hello there, I can see you're smitten with the car so far! But what is the story with servicing? Is it an annual thing or perhaps milage based? Do you know what a service will cost? And what indeed does the service of an electric car entail while it's in there? I think I'll find your videos very relevant, hopefully sooner rather than later. I'm very curious to hear how your actual commute goes. Great vid, keep up the good work.
Thank you. With regards to servicing it will be done through the leasing company and is once a year or 15k, whichever comes first. So for me that'll be after about 8 months! As for what the service entails, I really am unsure. I'd assume a battery health check, brake pad inspection and pollen filter change. There are also two coolant expansion tanks under the bonnet, so I'm thinking they're to do with the battery cooling/heating system, so imagine they'll need to be changed like regular antifreeze every so often.
I have had my MG4 Trophy for just over a year and love it. It had it's first service last week. Not sure what they did apart from giving it a wash and vacuum. They charged me £120 and it took about an hour and a half. It's a real pleasure to drive and have had no problems after several 200-300mile trips.
@johnrubber1144 that's reassuring to know that it's been trouble free. I'm still baffled by the servicing, as apart from brakes and suspension I wouldn't have thought there's much to check, but I'm not an expert by any means. Whereas on my ICE cars I've had the engines stripped down on them so know of all their workings.
@@OfficialMacMotorscurious as to why MG have fixed service intervals, when Tesla don't. I'm seriously considering an extended range, or an XPower. I just wish the latter had a longer range.
@djwarren5081 yeah it seems odd that the XPower has the same battery as the Long Range, whilst the ER you'd have thought would be the more appropriate power plant. But I'm sure there's a reason why, most likely packaging the dual motors with larger battery.
Not sure what you had the regen mode set to bur it looks like it was probably "adaptive" whuch is what i prefer if driving motorways or A roads. For town driving Iprefer the High setting. Also for the range as I am sure you know by far the biggest factor in range is temperature- as i said on your previous video my range has dropped massively in these cold months and my efficiency is generally less than 3 miles per kwh whereas in summer i was getting 4.5 on my commute and sometimes over 5 when poodling around town.
When I took it out on that first drive it would have been set to normal drive mode and medium regen. I tend to stick it on eco and adaptive now, and if driving in towns use 1 pedal mode if it allows me (depending on charge). But yeah, the cold weather really clobbered the range. Thankfully not by enough to affect my commute. 😁
It's worth spending some time reading the online manual, using what you learn in practice , and then read some more. Then find the settings that you like and use them.
@@OfficialMacMotors I have been driving LEAFs for over 10 years, Last year I brought one with the 62Kw battery, It was only after several months that I realised that it seemed to charge at a faster rate than earlier models. It was only then that I read the manual properly! And it does charge twice as fast!
I've heard good things about the BYD Seal, in fairness! And if the prices are comparable, then it would be daft to not at the very least consider the BYD.
Test drove one recently the Trophy version and was like wow. Its the dealers car he has had for 1 year with 11k miles & its for sale £19k. Used ev prices will drop in my opinion as loads where registered in Sept 24 to avoid the £15k UK govt fine so we should see some bargains in 2025. Net zero is somethign we shoudl aim for , but not at the price of destroying our economy in the process.
Got the trophy. Had about two months. Had a leaf before and this is a massive leap forward. However the software for the infotainment system is a joke. Slow clunky and frustrating. Hopefully sorted out with updates. Getting 200 miles winter range which is what I expected after already having an EV. All in all very happy though.
Which model Leaf did you have? The Mk1 or Mk2, as I've heard positive things about the Mk2, so if you feel the MG4 is an improvement even on that then that's good. The infotainment system I haven't had too many issues with personally. It's perhaps a little slow to respond and doesn't seem to like my fingers pressing it so I find myself being quite pronounced with how I touch it for it to engage. So wonder if mine has the latest software version? I'm not a great fan of touch screens in cars in general as I do find them distracting and a but frustrating having to cycle through menus, but I've not found it too bad so far. Better than a BMW iDrive, where everything is hidden away under sub-menus within sub-menus. The mileage in winter I'm finding around the same, which I'm very satisfied with.
Ev’s are mostly great to drive however the mg experience will ultimately frustrate as the cars are full of comment issues and the after sales experience, which unfortunately you will need to use and often is terrible. Every time is see a review of an mg , especially form someone who’s actually brought one I can’t help but feel sorry for what it likely to come.the mg4 is the best of a bad crop to be fair but you will also likely experience multiple issues.
Glad you're happy with your new car - long may that continue - but irrelevant to me - I can't afford one. Mind you, given that my wee 9 year old hatchback can do 500 miles - easily - and be refuelled in 5 minutes - easily - I'm not losing too much sleep - not yet anyway. ATB.
I wouldn't have been able to afford to buy one or finance one, so the salary sacrifice scheme through my work made it more than affordable for me. But everyone's circumstances are different and an EV certainly won't suit everyone. I wasn't even convinced it would suit me! But so far, so good.
Imagine not even having to wait 5 minutes at a grubby fuel station - especially for the diesel refuellers - by doing what I do? Charging overnight at home means no stops at all! Magic!
Charging at home is a little tricky in the middle of a 500 mile drive - and impossible if, like 50% of the population, you live in a flat@@brianharries
Yes ... the it's the AC compressor; the harder it works, the louder (faster) it is. Mine is the same. I've already reported it to the dealer so if it does ever fail I have it on record that there was an issue right at the start. So far so good. 👍
I can't say I've noticed any noises different to what I'd expect, other than the clicking and little whirring noises when it's on charge. But it's almost silent, even when on preheat and I approach the car when it's silent outside.

Glad you like 👍
It's great!
I'm so tempted
There's honestly very little to fault. What alternatives are you looking at?
"linear power curve" is a new one on me. Surely if it's a curve it's not linear?
Maybe, a dyno graph is normally referred to as a power curve, but technically you're right, it's a straight line.
It's worth spending some time reading the online manual, using what you learn in practice , and then read some more. Then find the settings that you like and use them.
Good tip. There's certainly some features I'm yet to learn. When I have a spare few mins I'll take a look at the manual.
@@OfficialMacMotors I have been driving LEAFs for over 10 years, Last year I brought one with the 62Kw battery, It was only after several months that I realised that it seemed to charge at a faster rate than earlier models. It was only then that I read the manual properly! And it does charge twice as fast!
Happy cold feet!
Unfortunately in Australia the price of the MG4 Long Range 77 is similar to the BYD Seal Premium which is a much better value car.
I've heard good things about the BYD Seal, in fairness! And if the prices are comparable, then it would be daft to not at the very least consider the BYD.
Coming from my nissan juke i feel like im sitting on the floor in my mg4
Test drove one recently the Trophy version and was like wow.
Its the dealers car he has had for 1 year with 11k miles & its for sale £19k.
Used ev prices will drop in my opinion as loads where registered in Sept 24 to avoid the £15k UK govt fine so we should see some bargains in 2025.
Net zero is somethign we shoudl aim for , but not at the price of destroying our economy in the process.
The higher seating position ia purely because you're sat on top of the batteries......
Put it in eco its still very fast
It really is! My friend with a Golf R won't accept that there's not much between the two, performance wise! It's quite amusing.
isn`t it NOISY !
We had a 2015 24kwh Tekna.Like the MG better but the infotainment I am still trying to like.
Just keep on top of your charging. She don’t like being low of eleccy
Is that the case? I thought it was just to try and avoid charging to 100% every day if you can.
You won’t go back to ICE
Oh and check your undertray
For my commuter car, I don't think I will, no.
When you turn on Air-condition MG4, you can hear very loud annoying noise anyone agree with me? (you have to hear it from outside of the car)
Yes ... the it's the AC compressor; the harder it works, the louder (faster) it is.
@@OfficialMacMotors not all cars do this, but if they do then it is very noticeable 🙂
I wonder how much money you will lose when you come to sell it and the degree of battery degradation with time and use cycles?
Not a lot, considering it's a lease car. 🙂
