No, now YOU’RE paying for their loans. My family are not immigrants. But I had no extras when I was in school, either. No parties, no trips, no nice things, scared to drive because the car would break down. To this day I can’t stop worrying about money.
That means you are probably not paying taxes right if u mention they are now paying for their loans? If u did taxes right or at all u r now paying for your lazy idiot friends.
Yes we would. I knew this is what would happen. It’s okay when all our taxes go to bail out billionaires and fund the bloated military but not when we use it to help people (it’s okay to help people who made bad decisions sometimes friends)
We should be mad about it all. People have every right to be upset by this just like all the money we waste on foreign aid and all the horrible ideas coming out of Washington.
I have been working on Dave's baby steps for a few years I only have my student loans left. I owe 15k right now. This would drop me to 5k. With the extension of forbearance I can save up quickly without making payments with high interest and pay it off before the end of the year. It's bitter sweet. I'll have to help pay the taxes, but I'll be debt free.
Glad for you and everyone else that are receiving help with this predatory lending system. I paid my $100k student loan balance off in 2018 but I'm so glad others that need help are able to get the necessary assistance to get out of debt and live a life of freedom. I am not bothered by others receiving financial help. If Dave claims to be such a Christian, he needs to seek to understand God's way of compassion because Dave's way of thinking is not compassionate in the least. The Bible mentions the year of Jubilee (debt cancelation).
I worked nights through college and got out debt-free. My husband did the same. When we graduated and my husband got his job, we had a full tank of gas, a paid security deposit on a new place, paid rent, and $20 leftover between us. But we did it. It was terrifying, but we did it.
And? Sure your parents said the same thing when you got free universal busing… “Some people used to walk miles to go to school, why do I have to pay for universal buses?!” God you people are stupid!
It's sad, because in a way, dangling loan forgiveness over people's heads like a carrot on a stick, actively encourages people to stay in debt. This doesn't fix anything, all it does is move the problem somewhere else, at best.
The other day while at the gas pump it was like $3.80 somethin and I thought “man this is cheap” Then I realized I am brainwashed… I’m now programmed to think gas under $4 a gallon is cheap.
"If they're so bad you have to cancel them [loans], then why are you still making them?" Yep, the financially literate are all asking ourselves that same question.
In terms of fairness, there is no doubt this seems to be unfair for a huge number of Americans, however it seems a bit hypocritical coming from people who supported forgiving $750 billion PPP loans
Nobody supported forgiving those loans either, people seem to forget, that student debt money was owed to the American Taxpayer, now we will only get more into debt and there will be less money for social programs, social security, building roads and it in the end this will really fix nothing, people will just get into more debt
You probably budgeted, scraped by, and ate beans and rice like I did on an average salary to get out of debt like a responsible and motivated person. Shame on you.
I paid cash for my MBA and although it stings a bit, the habit and character of taking ownership is there. People who don’t understand how great a gift this can be won’t change and keep making stupid decisions. Best wishes!
Lol, I took 10k in loans and have it sitting in a bank. Was waiting for this to happen. Now I have a 10k head start in getting a house and will be able to reach my goal to give generously faster. I will agree tho most people have no idea that they were basically handed 10k and they will continue to make poor finacial decisions.
You were fortunate to be in a position to do that. Not everyone can. My daughter came out of her BS program with zero debt, paid for her first year of Masters with savings , now she has federal loans. No fault of her own. Rent needs to be paid, food, utilities. She is one step away from total brokeness.
Well I only have $2k left on my loans and $9k of my husbands left so this is coming right on time for us.. at the end of the day we are all paying taxes for things we don’t necessarily want to. Those who were able to pay y’all’s off Amen and y’all are blessed. Some of us were actually trying to pay it off and becoming debt free with the baby stuff so it’s a blessing for us. Don’t try to make us feel bad about this please. Now we (my husband and I) can start focusing on having funds for our children’s future so they don’t even have to go into debt !
I hope you don’t feel bad. No one who ever received a tax break ever feels bad or guilty. Sort of the same thing. Some have missed out others will take advantage of the opportunity.

I don't care about politics, but my prediction is that we're all gonna be paying for this "forgiveness" x10 when it's time to pay taxes next quarter. Remember how high the taxes were after the "stimulus checks"?
Yeah but we also increase the military budget. This is actually a good thing you're complaining that taxes might go up for actually benefiting people, please complain when they do it for things that do not benefit you and know the military budget does not benefit you they're buying things that they're not using cause it's bloated
Paying off debt teaches you to be a master of your own money. You become mindful of what you spend and where. I'm surprised it still happened. I benefit from the 10k. All this does is make my debt free date be earlier than expected because I already was responsible and paid off over half off during the forbearance.
I totally agree. I have a strict budget that includes my daughters loans. It helps to keep me on track and I actually get excited as I see the amount go down. It is a bit disheartening to think that someone else can make a decision on your behalf in regards to your loans. There is always a hidden agenda when someone else pays for something on your behalf.

But do billionaires need tax credits and PPP loans forgiven? Tax “policy” is consistently inconsistent. There’s always flaws in the logic/application. On the whole, I’m happy for those who got some genuine relief, even if that includes some who don’t need it.

Not everyone who has student debt is irresponsible. I owe nothing, and have no degrees (nore regrets), but many folks work very hard and can't pay off their loans due to cost of living increases not matching wages, way before inflation started.
I was a college financial advisor for years, what pisses me off is most students take out more loans than necessary. They check that it's for "living expenses" but I remember many using it for weddings, vacations, etc. That's what pisses me off about forgiving these loans. I've even heard people saying they're never going to pay back their student loans - well then you should have never borrowed it. Borrowing something with no intend on returning is called stealing.
We are having a major worker shortage I believe because college aged kids are not working any like they did 20 years ago to pay for part or even all of the bills as they went. Now they just CHARGE IT and expect us that did not waste our time going into debt or to college to pay for they bad mistakes!!!! My wife and I are homeschooling our kids, putting our oldest through college, and paying our OWN BILLS, without either one of us having a "college degree"!!!
Ooof, I feel this! I remember struggling financially in community college and using up every penny of financial aid I was given for books and fees while classmates were buying Playstations and expensive shoes with theirs. It's disgusting but it's also a mixed bag. For every person being slimy with financial aid you have genuine people using it for school.
This is absolutely true. I remembering borrowing more than needed but I actually used it for “living expenses” as did my brother. The bucket i used to commute back and forth to class needed engine work, or I needed a root canal and cap on this or that tooth, and etc. try to go easy on Students making poor life decisions….remember they’re students, 18-21yo
I'm not a democrat or republican. Frankly speaking, both parties are dysfunctional and are self-serving. $10K student loan forgiveness or up to $20K for a pell grant recipient is a sucker punch in the gut to folks who made sacrifices and worked hard to pay off the loan. This is going to encourage more bad behavior and irresponsibility.
I borrowed $22K for my Bachelor's degree. I have made regular payments over the past 25 years but sometimes life was hard and I had to do a deferment and forbearance. I signed up for an IBR over 10 years ago and my balance in 2020 was $50K. People think you want a handout, no I just want the student loan servicers to not get away with their predatory practices. They have made billions on interest.
🤨🤣 Are you new here? Look up Dave's rant on bailing out the banks. It's all stupid. It all causes inflation and we are all going to pay through more inflation in funding foreign governments, bank bailouts, and now student loan forgiveness.

I genuinely believe reducing or even removing student loan interest rates is good enough so interest rates won't gouge students for trying to get an education.
Not everyone wants to be in debt. Millions decide not to go to college yet they and their grandchildren and their grandchildren forever will have to pay for those who choose to get into debt and then end up working at mc Donald's? Oh but they had a blast in college right... Everyone should be responsible for their own decisions.
In PR most of us go to college using the Pell grant and I was fortunate enough to be able to pay the difference with another grant for having good grades, thus graduating debt free. The thought of 100k dollars student loans absolutely terrifies me and even more so how normal it seems to students in the mainland US, like it is simply a fact of life.
I’m annoyed. I just got down to 2200 left on my federal loans. I figured the loan freeze was a great time to pay off my federal loans with no interest. Now I feel like I wasted 8000 this year. At least I have the internal moral win of doing it basically entirely in my own
There's a provision in the Cares Act that says you can request back any money you paid toward the loan if it was during the pause. So you can technically request it (call your provider) and then apply that money toward the forgiveness and pay the rest of the loan in full when the pause officially ends.
Just because we’re getting help doesn’t mean we aren’t sacrificing and trying to pay it. Idk why the narrative always goes to the far side of the people who are getting help are useless/lazy/irresponsible etc. I have made so many sacrifices I have paid my loans and been without food in my house I have been at risk of losing my apt just to stay on track with my loans working 2-3 jobs just because im getting a LITTLE relief doesn’t mean I haven’t sacrificed and been paying and in the end it will affect my taxes too so I will be paying that portion back just from another avenue. What do people think? Those who get help also never have to pay tax either? Clearly we’re in income brackets that will also be impacted by any tax increases….

This is where Dave & Company can capitalize. Continue to target the psychological aspect of spending and borrowing. Target and open more doors to those who just got the debts wiped clean because they still won't "get it".
My kid started college on Monday. They really are good at hiding, or pushing back the whole funding discussion, until the 11th hour, so that kid has already committed and is emotionally invested in going there. Then they want the parents to sign for loans, or whatever. Kid has scholarship for tuition, fortunately, but still has to borrow for dorms/food plan, etc. She did OK, but I am sure a lot of kids just go along with it anyway.
I hear what you are saying but it is still no reason to go into debt, if it's too much, it's too much. They did similar things 30 years ago, I applied to a private school that was 10k per year, a lot back then. They sent me letters accepting me, it was all ready to go and I was excited, but my dad was like, um, no. That was it, end of story.

What people don’t understand is that you still end up paying for those student loans - in the form of low wages, higher inflation, etc. just like Dave Ramsey was saying. You can’t just cancel debt and think it has no effect. It has to be paid for in some way or another. It just comes out of your pocket in a different way.

I normally agree with Dave, but not this time. His whole argument is literally saying "We had to pay, so you should pay" insisting that the very people he's trying to help achieve financial goals to pay unnecessary student loan debts that's been forgiven simply because he and others had to. But isn't investing about taking risks? Well they took the risk Dave and it paid off for them. I paid off all my student loan debts as well, but at least I was prepared to be debt free in case the student loans weren't forgiven, that's enough for me. Get over it!
Dave shoud've told us put to put the money in a seperate savings accounts for your student loans and wait to see if anything is announced. Instead many people listened to Dave's terrible advice and just wasted paying off 10k in debt. You are also screwing me personally. I was planning to be a first time home buyer and that got put off due to high prices thanks to inflation. I am saving and plan to try again next year. Now I have to compete with you on rent and housing which means I lose more money again. Rents and home prices will go up even more. I also paid my student loans off and lost my wife in divorce over money fights with our 100K of student loan debts. I agree with what Dave says is the best solution for everyone is to cap what student loans pay. 25K max for a bachelors and you watch college tuition rates drop like a rock. Now no inflation and you pay less and be less burdened.
He should talk more about how he told people to pay their loans back instead of putting money into an account and at least waiting to see what happens.
