  • This is my Part 2 of 90's GRUNGE/ALTERNATIVE Riffs That Won Us METALHEADS Over. I stayed up till 6am to finish this one. Was well worth it since I dig these riffs so much. Thanks for watching. I apologized for Nirvana because it's so overplayed, in case you were wondering. :)

I think 90s alternative music was the perfect mix of punk and metal, that’s why it appealed in such a wide audience

Really? We (metalheads/punks) generally hated that stuff. I certainly never saw it as a mix of punk and metal.

Also....I feel like there MAY be a part 3, just an assumption at this point 😊 I want to wait (?) and let it all absorb again.....although not easy to hold back commenting on all the crazy awesome music coming back to life in my brain again after way too many years. Faith No More really was the complete package while Jim Martin was still in the band. Im aware how awesome Patton and co. are on their own merits, but even tho they don't want to admit it the tension created by Jim adding a metal touch to songs FNM intended to be poppy/jazzy was what was such a draw for them. Not the same since

Agree on both counts -- would add that 2019's "War Music" was also very good. Not up there with the other two (which is an unfair comparison), but still much better than what most other bands have done.

  • @cyborgroxx

First off, great videos (both of them). I'm not a grunge/alternative fan, but you have played a few songs that I really like. I'm not what a lot of people would classify as metalhead...at least not by today's standards. I like late 80's and early 90's "hair bands". Pop metal I guess you could call it. I'm a big fan of Guns N' Roses, Motley Crue, Poison, Skid Row, Warrant, Slaughter, Winger, Firehouse, Cinderella, Trixter, and yes, even Nelson (stop laughing, lol). I also love old Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne, bit melodic pop metal is my thing. I play a lot of covers, been in cover bands. So I always appreciate your videos because you have a lot of diversity in your playing. I hope you do more video's like this where you explore different kinds of rock from different era's. And while I'm not a huge fan of the 90's Seattle sound, I give you an A+ for everything.

So happy to see "Diet Pill" and "Grease Box" in this. L7 is super-underrated, and especially Bricks are Heavy, as is TAD, I really have trouble seeing TAD as anything but a metal band. I think one of the things that causes the whole grunge vs metal argument (besides a lot of pointless posturing) is the fact that 1) A lot of us found grunge/alternative at the same time as "any metal that wasn't hair metal/arena rock/glam metal etc" To a lot of us the grungers and punks were a lot angerier and more agressive to us, so antything that wasn't (rightly or wrongly) seen as the standard 80's metal singing about how rich, handsome and popular you were) seemed a lot mroe angry/aggressive/real to us. Personally, my own stuff, while I consider myself a metalhead is actually a mix alternative, grunge, punk, goth, and extreme metal. Basically Sonic Youth meets EYEHATEGOD or Jack off Jill meets Crowbar. Again, rightly or wrongly, the divide to me will always be between music that seems to be bragging and music that seems to be in pain. I will always prefer the latter.

EVERYBODY thought that "Sex Type Thing" was an AIC song unless they already knew otherwise. You can go through Core song-by-song and point out where Weiland's doing his Layne Staley impression, his Eddie Vedder impression, his Kurt Cobain impression, and his Chris Cornell impression -- sometimes in the same song. Personally, it got on my nerves. That, and the fact that "Plush" should end about six chorus repeats before it actually does.
As far as the riff that won my Metallikid self over to AIC goes, it was "Man in the Box." The second that track appeared on Headbanger's Ball, I was hooked. And Faith No More -- if you couldn't appreciate "Epic" as a metalhead, you damn sure got onboard once you heard "Surprise! You're Dead!" For Ministry, it was "Stigmata"; for NIN, it was "Head Like a Hole"; for L7, it was "Shitlist."
I remember Porno for Pyros being a tough sell for me after the magnificence of Jane's Addiction -- which was made even tougher when they released the limp "Pets" as the single. The track that won me over to that album was "Cursed Female."
A few others that stood out:
    Hole -- "Violet"
    Gruntruck -- "Crazy Love"
Mother Love Bone -- "Stardog Champion"
Temple of the Dog -- "Pushin' Forward Back"
    Morphine -- "Honey White"
